It was snowing heavily that day. There were hardly any people on the street, and a figure in red was moving slowly in the snow. As she looked up at the snowflakes falling on her long eyelashes, which instantly turned into crystal water drops, Laura Yan couldn't help smiling, and two pretty dimples were visible on her cheeks.
This woman seemed to be quiet and rather composed. She didn't seem belong to this city adorned with skyscrapers, but the sight of her made people who saw her feel at ease.
All of a sudden, her phone rang. With an anxious look on her face, Laura Yan quickly took out her phone. It was a number unfamiliar to her. It wasn't her father calling. That was good!
"Hell-"
"You finally answered my call! Where the hell are you right now?" A man's cold and overbearing voice came from the phone, interrupting her greeting.
Laura Yan was taken aback. She didn't recognize the voice on the phone. "Sir, you are..."
"Sir?" The man asked in response to what she said, clearly quite angry, "Where the hell are you?"
This violent roar brought a frown on Laura Yan's face. She worriedly looked around. Since she wasn't familiar with this place, she was a bit uncertain, "I..."
But, before she could even say another word, the man roared out in anger again, which made her eardrum buzz. "I'm warning you. Don't test my patience. I'm only going to ask you one last time. Where are you right now?"
Trembling in fear, Laura Yan looked up at a sign and blurted out, "The Shadow Lake!"
"Wait for me there. Don't go anywhere!" An unquestionable order had been given to her.
Before Laura Yan could say anything, the man hung up the phone. With a deep frown, she wondered who it was. Why was he so angry and looking for her in such a hurry? Was it someone sent by her father? Laura Yan stared blankly into her phone for a while. When she was about to continue wandering, the screeching sound from brakes startled her and almost made her drop her phone to the ground.
A black Ferrari pulled over right next to her. A tall man rushed out of the car and slammed the door behind him. Then, he began to look around.
There was no one else on the street at this point. She couldn't take her eyes off of this handsome gentleman. His physique along with his tailored clothes displayed his unique taste and personality. His attractive face and slightly furrowed eyebrows made him seem a little angry, but it didn't do anything to lessen his charm at all.
Seeing him take out his phone and dial a number anxiously, Laura Yan faltered a bit. A moment later, her phone rang and startled her, so much so that the phone in her hand almost fell to the ground.
The man's eyes were like an eagle's, turning into cold arrows and piercing right through Laura Yan.
She quickly looked away and answered the phone in a low voice, "Hello?"
Before she could say anything else, the silhouette of the man appeared in front of her. She heard no sound on the phone, and his shadow surrounded her petite body, which immediately made her feel so distressed.
"Did you answer your phone just now?" His icy voice was even more frightening than the whistling cold wind.
Hearing this, Laura Yan reflexively nodded her head. She could tell right away that the man standing in front of her was indeed the intimidating man on the phone earlier.
"Sir... You must have mistaken me for someone else," she said, carefully raising her head. The man's towering height felt so intimidating that it made her want to get as far away from him as she could, as soon as possible.
The man's eyes glistened under the sharp light as he looked Laura Yan up and down. Her petite figure and eyes, which seemed to be on the verge of tears, made her look so frightened. Her nose was a little red due to the cold, and her tiny lips had gotten pale as well. She was beautiful, but she wasn't the person he was looking for!
The man's eyes grew colder and colder by the second, and he almost turned a little violent. The corners of his thin lips moved ever so slightly, and he asked, "Who are you?"
"Me? Why should I tell you?" Laura Yan answered sourly, embarrassed by the man's intense stare and his question. She turned around and was about to walk away, but she suddenly felt a tight grip on her wrist.
"What do you think you're doing? Let go of me..." Laura Yan tried to break free, but he was too strong for her.
The man's sharp gaze were glued to her. "Tell me, where is Olivia Jiang?"
Laura Yan tried to shake him off, but he just tightened his grip even more. Writhing in pain, she frowned and yelled out, "Let go of me! I don't know the person you're looking for. Let go of me..."
The anger in the man's eyes made him look crazy. He snatched the phone from her hand and said, "Don't you know that name? How can you possibly use this phone number if you don't know her?"
Her phone had been taken away, and Laura Yan was sent into a panic. "Give me back my phone!"
To which the man sneered, "Are you worried about this phone? Then, tell me who you are and where Olivia Jiang is!"
"My name is Laura Yan. I've been using this phone number since I arrived in this city a few days ago! I really have no idea who the person you're looking for is, let alone where she is! Please, give me back my phone..." Laura explained eagerly.
"Laura Yan?" The scary man looked at her and smiled all of a sudden. "A member of the Yan family?"
Seeing the smile on the man's face, Laura was actually a bit scared, but she stubbornly asked, "What's wrong with the Yan family? Do you hold a grudge against my family?"
Completely ignoring her question, the man let go of her and quickly took out the SIM card, and handed the mobile phone back to her.
"Give me back the SIM card!" Laura glared at the unreasonable man and protested, without accepting the phone.
The man looked at her, held the tiny SIM card in his hand and said word by word slowly, "I'm warning you, you can't use this SIM card!"
Biting her lower lip, she stared at him without saying a word or taking back the phone.
"Okay!" As soon as he was done speaking, the phone drew a beautiful arc from the man's hand and was thrown away.
"Why? Why did you do that?" Laura asked in astonishment.
She watched as her phone flipped in the air. With the sound of the ice breaking, it fell into the Shadow Lake not far away. Left utterly dumbfounded, she shot the man an intense glare and ran into the thick pile of snow. There was a hole in the thin ice's surface, and ripples were still spreading. The thin ice on the entire lake trembled slightly.
Gritting her teeth, Laura jumped into the lake, creating even more ripples. The biting cold water cut her face like a knife as well as her hand. It quickly made its way into her clothes and to every inch of her skin. Her heart skipped a beat. It was the first time that she had seen snow since she grew up in the south. Simply put, she hadn't fully grasped how cold the snow was in the north.
The man frowned as he watched her walk toward the edge of the lake. She paused for a while and unexpectedly jumped into the water. The man was completely taken aback. It was winter right now, and the temperature was well below zero. The snow was still pouring down.
"Silly woman, you can go to hell for all I care!" The man cursed and turned around to leave. Since she was not Olivia Jiang, this matter had nothing to do with him! However, when he had already walked away, the man suddenly turned back. This woman was such an idiot! He could've easily paid her back for the phone. Did she really have to jump into the lake? No, she was a member of the Yan family! She shouldn't have jumped into the lake for just a stupid phone!
At the thought of that, the man slowly walked toward the bank of the lake. A big hole was visible on the surface of the frozen lake, and Laura was nowhere to be seen. With his eyebrows deeply knit, the man took off his coat, glared at the big hole, and then jumped into it.
When he finally came out of the water, he looked so angry as he held the unconscious woman in his arms. The man carried Laura and went straight to the Ferrari, throwing her on the back seat.
He started the car and turned on the heater, but the anger on his face hadn't gone yet. The cold water on his hair was drying up in the warm air, and he seriously felt as though there was smoke above his head.
The man glanced at her from the rear-view mirror. Earlier, she said that she just arrived in this city.
With a solemn expression on his face, the man dialed a number and ordered, "Mandy, go to the villa right now!"
Without giving the person on the other end of the line a chance to speak, he quickly hung up the phone.
The captivating woman stopped in front of a villa, looked up and smiled triumphantly. Harrison Li, this man let her come here at last!
"Are you Miss Mandy? Come in, please!" The servant, Betty, opened the door and invited her in.
"Mr. Harrison!" Mandy Tang's voice was so alluring, and she had such a sweet smile. His eyes and eyebrows were full of amorous feelings, but she still didn't dare to approach the owner of the villa, who was lazily lounging on the sofa. He was none other than Harrison Li.
"Come here!"
With his permission, Mandy immediately held Harrison's arm.
Completely ignoring Mandy's attempt to be intimate with him, he asked, "Do you know who you are?"
"I'm your special assistant on call, Sir!" Mandy whispered into Harrison's ear.
"Do you have any idea why I asked you to come here?" Harrison sounded rather calm and didn't seem to be attracted to her at all.
Mandy's voice became even softer as she gently drew circles on his big hand and said, "How should I know..."
"You don't know..." Harrison turned his head and grabbed a hold of Mandy's jaw. The poor woman couldn't help trembling in fear.
His lips were cold, and the kiss felt like it could crush her to pieces. When the kiss was finally over, he tightened his grip.
"Mr. Harrison, you're hurting me..."
"Don't you know that I enjoy pushing people from the peak of happiness to the depths of hell?" Harrison didn't loosen his grip at all, which made it so painful that Mandy was on the verge of tears.
"Mr. Harrison, I... Did I do anything wrong?"
With a sneer, Harrison threw Mandy off of the sofa with great force that she hit the table hard. Blood began to trickle from the corner of Mandy's lips and her long hair was now in such a mess.
Click!
A SIM card was tossed over to Mandy's hand. Her face shifted in an instant. Crawling over in horror, she tightly grabbed onto Harrison's trouser leg. "Mr. Harrison, they forced me to do it. If I hadn't told them, I would have ended up dead..."
"Is that so?" Harrison looked Mandy straight in the eye and said, "Haven't you realized that I will make your life a living hell if you did?"
Her hand stop moving. The smile on his face was reflected in her frightened eyes.
"Get out of my face!" Harrison kicked Mandy.
This sent her flying and caused her to bump into the door. She didn't dare to stay there for even a second longer, so she struggled to open the door and crawled out at once. She had to get out of this place as soon as possible. Otherwise, there was no telling what might happen to her next!
Harrison made a phone call and gave an order. "Follow her!"
All things considered, the man seemed to be in quite a good mood right now, wearing a beautiful smile at the corners of his mouth. What should he do with that woman lying in the bathroom?
As he walked over to the luxurious bathroom, the hot air coming from the bathtub heated up the coldness.
With her long eyelashes fluttering, Laura finally regained consciousness.
Where was she right now? It felt so nice and warm!
When she tried to move around a little, she found herself soaked in warm water. She really felt so refreshed as though she had a good sleep! However, the corners of her mouth froze. When she lowered her head, she realized that she was actually naked. 'Oh, God! What happened?'
"Uncle Kevin?" She heard a man's voice. It was that damn guy who threw her phone into the lake. Uncle Kevin? Could it be her father? How could he possibly know her father?
"Miss Laura is here!" The man didn't sound as cold and intimidating as he was earlier. His captivating voice was rather refined and gentle. Then, he politely asked, "Is Miss Laura going with you to the banquet tonight?"
'The banquet?'
Laura felt so bitter in her heart! Her father had asked her to attend the banquet in the evening and to set aside some time to prepare for it. How could she forget? What was she supposed to do now?
"I'll just take her with me to the party tonight! Don't worry, Uncle Kevin!" After hanging up the phone, Harrison seemed to walk closer to the bathroom.
Laura nervously clenched her fists, but she didn't dare to move. For some reason, she only felt safe while being surrounded by water.
She heard a knock upon the door. Biting her lip, she didn't dare to bring herself to respond.
The door was pushed open all of a sudden. Out of reflex, she put her arms against her chests to cover herself up. It was so nerve-wracking that her nails dug into her flesh. She watched in horror as Harrison walked toward her step by step.
"Stop!" Laura yelled out, trying to stop the man from approaching her. "Who are you?"
Harrison listened to her. However, when she saw the facetious smile at the corners of his mouth, she wanted to just shrink and disappear!
"Miss Laura, right? Since you used that number, you have to face the consequences!" The grin on his face grew even wider. He inched closer toward the bathtub again. Harrison was by no means a saint. He would never turn down anything that had been served to him!
Laura didn't know what to do. Tears were about to roll down her cheeks, and her whole body was exposed to the man in front of her.
Suddenly, Harrison's phone rang! He frowned in utter annoyance and picked it up.
"What?" Furrowing his eyebrows even further, Harrison turned around.
Despite that, Laura couldn't calm herself down and helplessly stared at his back.
After hanging up the phone Harrison turned around and gave her a cold glance. "Go get changed and come out!"
With that, the bathroom door was finally closed shut. It was only then that she breathed a sigh of relief.
She put on a soft bathrobe, her face pinkish-white because of the warmth. Her long eyelashes were drooping, and her small mouth was tightly closed. Drops of water dripped from her long hair. She appeared in front of Harrison looking like this.
Harrison glanced at her and introduced himself, "I'm Harrison Li! Come with me!"
"Hi..."
Before Laura could finish her words, Harrison leaned over and cut her off. His face was so close that it almost pressed against hers. With his eyes turning dark in an instant, he warned her in a cold tone, "My name is Harrison Li, not 'Hi'!"
The warm breath that came out of his mouth blew on her face. The warmth assaulted her nerves. All of a sudden, her face became red-flushed. Hesitating for a bit, she asked in a low voice, "What are you going to do?"
"If you don't want to go to the party looking like that, then come with me!" Harrison pursed his lips, as if he didn't see the need to explain these things to her at all.
It wasn't until then that Laura came to realize that she really had no other choice but to follow him. "Do you know my father?"
"You mean Uncle Kevin?" Exuding such arrogance, Harrison leaned against the door and looked at her as a strange smile appeared on his face. "It seems that Uncle Kevin hasn't trained you well yet!"
His intense gaze made her feel a little embarrassed. So, she turned her head to avert his gaze and looked around the room in front of her.
"Go ahead and pick something to wear!"
"Me?" There were a wide variety of clothes in the wardrobe, which overwhelmed her and left her at such a loss.
Harrison acted so indifferent as he looked at the helpless expression on her face. She wasn't anything like that woman at all. Olivia was so elegant. In contrast to that, Laura was just a little girl!
"We don't have time to waste!" Harrison urged her coldly.
"This one!" she blurted out, pointing at a white evening gown, but Harrison didn't give her a response.
When Laura turned around, she saw the sullen look in Harrison's eyes. She couldn't help feeling nervous. "If you don't want me to wear this one, I'll choose something else!"
Ignoring his gaze, she went ahead and tried to pick another dress.
"No. It's fine. You can take this one." After that, Harrison strode out and said, "Zara, help her put on some makeup!"
"I don't want..." Before Laura could finish her sentence, Harrison's cold gaze made her swallow back the words she was going to say. In the end, she was forced to sit down and obediently wait for someone to put makeup on her.
As she sat on the sofa, she was still a bit reluctant. If her father hadn't told her to attend the party, she wouldn't have agreed to put on any makeup at all!
"Miss, you're going to get wrinkles if you frown!" the woman named Zara smiled and said.
Smiling back at her, she asked, "Is your name Zara?"
"Yes!"
"Zara, can you not put too much makeup on my face? Please..." Laura pleaded in a low voice.
Zara simply nodded with a smile. She hadn't been invited to Harrison's place for quite some time. This woman picked this evening gown and asked for less makeup, which seemed to mean that she was replacing Olivia...
"Is that all right, Miss Laura?"
Looking at herself in the mirror, who seemed much prettier with just a little makeup on, Laura blinked her eyes and said, "Yes. Thank you, Zara!"
"You're welcome, Miss Laura. Go to Mr. Harrison right away. You shouldn't make him wait for too long!"
"Who is he? Are you afraid of him?" Laura anxiously asked. Truth be told, she couldn't help feeling scared at the thought of Harrison's cold gaze.
Zara didn't answer Laura's question; she simply smiled and accompanied her as she went to Harrison, who was resting with his eyes closed. Then, she politely said, "Mr. Harrison, Miss Laura is ready."
Harrison opened his eyes and gently nodded his head. Without a look at Laura, he got up and said, "Let's go!"
As soon as Zara and Laura walked out the door, a black Ferrari showed up and pulled over in front of them. After opening the door, Zara said, "Please get in, Miss Laura!"
"Thank you, Zara!" Laura obliged with gratitude and got on the car.
Zara politely smiled back at her and closed the door. At that moment, she thought, 'Mr. Harrison drove the car himself. This woman is not just some random girl...'
Laura instantly felt uncomfortable the moment she sat in the car. After all, it was Harrison who was driving the car!
Harrison didn't say a word, which made the air inside the car feel so suffocating. When the car finally stopped, she reached out to open the door, trying to get away from the tense atmosphere as soon as possible.
"Stay where you are!" Harrison said in a cold tone, stopping Laura in her tracks.
Although her hand was already on the door's handle, she watched in confusion as Harrison got off the car. After a few seconds, the door beside her suddenly opened.
Harrison reached out his hand with a gentle smile on his face and didn't seem to be as overbearing and aggressive as he was earlier.
Left utterly dumbfounded, she didn't know how she was supposed to respond.
"Laura, we're here!" Harrison's voice sounded kind of warm. As she looked at him, she couldn't help putting her hand in his palm. It felt so warm!
As soon as she got out of the car, a gust of cold wind blew, which made her shiver and calm down a lot. She was just about to retract her hand. Harrison let go of her hand but he bent his arm.
She glanced at his arm but didn't hold it. How could they possibly walk together like this?
While Laura was still hesitating, Harrison grabbed her arm and linked it with his.
Caught off guard, Laura raised her head and looked at him. There was so much tenderness in his eyes that she had trouble looking straight at him. So, she lowered her gaze and her long eyelashes helped to hide her embarrassment.
"Mr. Harrison!" On the long hallway, people started greeting Harrison one after another. Laura really wanted to pull her arm out, but Harrison wouldn't her do so. In fact, he actually held onto her hand tightly.
The moment the two of them entered the hall, someone greeted them. "Harrison!" A sweet voice came through. And a woman who was wearing a sexy strapless long dress with long wavy hair and such enchanting eyes came over. When she saw the woman next to Harrison, her gaze suddenly became sharp. Nevertheless, Laura still held onto Harrison's arm intimately. "Harrison, who is this?"
"Amanda... This is..." Before Harrison could introduce her, a majestic voice interrupted him, "Laura!"
All of them turned their heads toward the direction where the voice came from. It was Kevin Yan, Laura's father. He quickly strode over and scolded her, "What happened to you?"
"Dad!" Seizing the opportunity to get away from Harrison, she walked toward Kevin Yan and said, "I..."
"Right. What happened to you? It's a good thing that you came across Mr. Harrison. Otherwise, you would have made us so worry about you," Mary Gong, who stood beside Kevin Yan, grumbled.
Although she felt so uncomfortable, Laura still nodded her head politely and said, "Thank you for your concern!"
Kevin Yan patted his daughter's hand to comfort her and then said to Harrison in a humble manner, "Laura just arrived in this city. She's not yet familiar with the place. Fortunately, she met Mr. Harrison. It's quite a stroke of luck. Thank you for taking care of her!"
With a smile on his face, Harrison replied, "You're welcome, Uncle Kevin!"
"So, you're the daughter of the Yan Family!" The woman holding Harrison's the other arm chuckled, "I'm Amanda Lian!"
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Amanda!"
Harrison seemed to have cast Amanda Lian aside so easily before he wrapped his muscular arm around Laura's waist. "Uncle Kevin, you can go ahead and talk to my father if you want. I'll take care of Laura!"
"Oh, all right then!" Smiling from ear to ear, Kevin Yan walked away with Mary Gong. He didn't expect that Laura would actually meet Harrison so soon and even show up with him. In fact, he couldn't believe it when he received the phone call from Harrison earlier. Moreover, he never thought that Harrison would be so close to his daughter!
Seeing at the vibrant smile on Kevin Yan's face, Harrison pursed his lips in disgust.
Gritting her teeth in anger, Amanda Lian glared at Laura after getting treated coldly by Harrison. She was burning with jealousy. It seemed that she had met a rival!
At this time, someone came over and respectfully informed Harrison, "Mr. Harrison, your father wants to see you!"
Nodding his head, Harrison let go of Laura. "You'll have to excuse me. I'll be gone for a while."
With such disdain, Amanda Lian looked Laura up and down, the seemingly ordinary woman who "happened" to come across Harrison. She was just about to tease Laura a little, but the hall suddenly turned silent.
A dignified middle-aged man stood under the spotlight, and Harrison was right next to him. Nodding his head to the crowd, he said, "Everyone, thank you for coming. This old man is quite grateful! Today, I invited you here to make an announcement. I'm going to step down from my position and retire, so Harrison will be taking over the Li Group. I hope all of you can treat him the same way you treated me!"
As it turned out, that man was none other than Colin Li, the head of the Li Group. Now, he had retired and asked his son to take over. Under the warm applause of the crowd, Harrison became the one in the spotlight.
Laura had no idea how big of a deal it was to take over the Li Group. Standing in the corner, she could only see the side of Harrison's face. He curled his firm lips upward and smiled. It was cold and apathetic, but it was nonetheless a perfect side profile. She couldn't deny that!
"Everyone, since I'm going to take over the Li Group, there's going to be some changes in the company. Please look forward to it!"
Needless to say, everyone was startled after hearing that. The Li Group was going to experience a drastic shift!
"Thank you all for coming. Enjoy yourselves!" Harrison politely said.
After the crowd dispersed, Laura sat down among them. She felt a little lightheaded and had no strength to move around at all. The air felt so heavy, so she looked around and tried to find a place where she could get some fresh air.
"Miss Laura!" someone called out to her. Hearing the voice, she knew right away that it was Harrison! As soon as she turned around, she saw him looking at her. With a cold smile on his face, he asked her, "Can I have this dance?"
Laura pulled a long face before giving him her hand, albeit reluctantly.
Harrison then wrapped his arm around her slender waist. As soon as they stepped into the dance floor, everyone was left stunned. Harrison caught a glimpse of Kevin Yan and Mary Gong, who had a peculiar and meaningful smile on their faces, as though they had already won. This infuriated Harrison so much!
Even Amanda Lian was biting her red lips as she watched the two of them. There should only be one person in Harrison's arms, and that was her, Amanda Lian. Who the hell was this Laura anyway? How dare she compete with her? Now, not only was Amanda Lian burning with jealousy, but she also began to despise this woman. At that moment, she was convinced that Laura was showing off to her!
"Miss Laura, what do you think about the Li Group?" Harrison asked her, with a contemptuous smile on his face.
Caught in a daze, Laura ended up dancing more and more out of tune as she tried to give him a response. "Hmm..."
As the smile on Harrison's face grew even wider, he interrupted her and asked, "What's wrong?"
"I..." She struggled to keep herself upright, but she felt so dizzy, as if her whole body had caught on fire. A chill came over her, and she said, "I... I want to go outside..."
When Harrison tried to get close to her, she wanted to push him away, but her arms had no strength in them at all. In the end, she collapsed in Harrison's arms. He sneered in disgust, "All right, let's go outside!"
With his arm wrapped around her waist, Harrison led her to the balcony beside the hall and let her sit down. He leaned against the sofa, waiting for what she was going to do next.
However, much to his surprise, Laura simply sat there in silence and really took a deep breath of fresh air. Her small face became flushed for some reason, and then she held her shoulders and said, "It's cold..."
With a devilish grin on his face, Harrison got close to her and said, "It seems that Uncle Kevin has trained you after all..."
The corners of her mouth twitched slightly and her eyebrows became deeply furrowed. She seemed to be feeling so uncomfortable. At that moment, she looked so weak and helpless. But, as far as Harrison was concerned, it all seemed so despicable! She curled up her body, trying to avoid him. However, Harrison still touched her smooth skin. His hand froze for a second. It felt like her whole body was burning up!
Instantly, he sat up straight and put his hand over her forehead to check her temperature. It was so hot!
"Is this your trick to get close to me?" Harrison looked at Laura, who was looking back at him with blurred vision and red-flushed. The wretched grin at the corners of his mouth deepened. Then, he lifted her up and said, "As you wish!"
Watching as Harrison left in such a hurry with Laura in his arms, the other guests glanced at each other in astonishment. However, they didn't say anything.
"Harrison!" Amanda Lian called out his name and was just about to chase after him, but someone forcefully pulled her away.
