Serena Vale couldn't sleep. Tonight was her twenty-first birthday, and more importantly, the night of her first shift. She paced back and forth in her bedroom, counting down the minutes until midnight.
"Calm down," she whispered to herself, running her fingers through her long dark hair. "Every Vale has been a perfect shifter for generations."
Her heart raced as she glanced out the window at the full moon rising over Silver Ridge territory. The moon seemed different tonight-tinged with red at the edges. A crimson moon. She shivered despite the warm summer air.
A knock at her door made her jump.
"Serena? Are you ready?" Her father's deep voice came through the door. Alpha Caius Vale, leader of the Silver Ridge Clan, sounded unusually nervous.
"Yes, Father. I'm coming." Serena smoothed down the white ceremonial dress that all wolves wore for their first shift. The soft fabric fell to her knees, simple yet elegant.
She opened the door to find her father waiting, his gray eyes-the same shade as hers-filled with pride.
"Tonight, you become who you were always meant to be," he said, placing his hands on her shoulders. "The future Luna of our pack."
Serena nodded, her stomach fluttering with both excitement and fear. Being chosen as the mate of Elias Storm, the young Alpha who would one day replace her father, was the greatest honor. She had known Elias since childhood, and the thought of standing beside him made her heart skip.
"Is Elias here?" she asked, following her father down the hallway.
"Of course. Everyone is waiting in the Sacred Circle."
The Sacred Circle was a clearing in the heart of the forest, surrounded by ancient oak trees that seemed to touch the stars. As Serena and her father approached, she saw hundreds of wolves gathered in concentric rings around a stone altar in the center. Torches burned brightly, casting dancing shadows across eager faces.
And there, standing at the altar, was Elias Storm. Tall and powerful, with golden hair that caught the firelight. When he saw Serena, his blue eyes lit up, and he smiled-a smile that normally made her feel warm inside. Tonight, however, something felt off. The smile didn't quite reach his eyes.
Whispers rippled through the crowd as Serena walked to the center of the circle. She held her head high, trying to appear confident despite the strange tension in the air.
"Tonight, we witness the first shift of Serena Vale," her father announced, his voice carrying across the hushed crowd. "Future Luna of the Silver Ridge Clan and mate to our next Alpha, Elias Storm."
Elias stepped forward and took Serena's hand in his. His touch was colder than she remembered.
"I have waited for this night," he said, but his voice sounded strained. "We all have."
The pack members began to chant, their voices rising and falling like waves. Serena closed her eyes, feeling the energy building inside her. This was the moment she had dreamed of her entire life.
"It's time," her father whispered.
Serena stepped onto the stone altar, her bare feet cold against the ancient rock. The crimson moon now hung directly overhead, bathing the clearing in eerie red light.
"Embrace your wolf," Elias called to her. "Let her free."
Serena took a deep breath and reached deep inside herself, searching for the wolf she knew was there. She had felt her presence for years-a shadow beneath her skin, waiting to be released.
At first, nothing happened. Then pain shot through her body like lightning. She gasped, doubling over as her bones began to crack and reshape. This wasn't right. First shifts were supposed to be painful, yes, but this-this was agony.
"Father?" she cried out, her voice distorting as her jaw began to elongate.
The crowd's chanting faltered. Someone gasped. Then another.
"What's happening to her?" a voice called out.
Through tears of pain, Serena saw her hands transform not into the silver-white paws of her family line, but into massive black claws, her skin darkening to midnight fur that seemed to swallow the torchlight.
"No," her father whispered, horror etching his face. "It can't be."
The transformation accelerated, bones snapping and muscles tearing as Serena's human form gave way to the wolf within. But as the change completed, an unnatural silence fell over the Sacred Circle.
Where a silver wolf should have stood, a massive black wolf crouched on the altar. Serena's fur was darker than midnight, seeming to absorb the light around her. And her eyes-her eyes glowed a vivid, unnatural purple.
"Onyx wolf," someone whispered, and the words spread like wildfire through the crowd.
"The curse has returned!"
"She's a monster!"
"Run! Protect the pups!"
Serena whimpered, confused by the reaction. She looked to Elias, expecting him to defend her, to calm the pack. Instead, she saw naked fear in his eyes as he backed away from the altar.
"Elias?" she tried to say, but it came out as a low growl.
"Stay back," he said, his voice shaking. "You're not what we thought. You're not who I thought."
Pain lanced through Serena's heart, worse than the physical agony of her transformation. She turned to her father, hoping for support, for an explanation.
But Caius Vale's face had hardened into a mask of disgust and betrayal. "How could this happen?" he hissed. "An Onyx wolf in my bloodline?"
"The prophecy," an elder whispered nearby. "Born under the crimson moon..."
Serena tried to step toward her father, confused and frightened, but as she moved, a surge of strange power rushed through her body. The torches around the clearing suddenly flared higher, then went out completely, plunging the Sacred Circle into darkness lit only by the red moon and her glowing purple eyes.
Screams erupted as wolves scrambled to get away from her. Even in the darkness, Serena could see clearly-see the fear and hatred on faces that had smiled at her just minutes before.
"Seize her!" someone shouted. "Before she brings destruction upon us all!"
"No, kill her now!" another voice called.
Serena backed away, her new wolf instincts screaming at her to run. This couldn't be happening. This was supposed to be her night of triumph, not of terror.
Elias stepped forward, his face grim in the moonlight. "Serena Vale," he announced, his voice now cold and formal, "by the power vested in me as future Alpha of the Silver Ridge Clan, I reject you as Luna and cast you out from our pack."
The words struck her like physical blows. Rejected. Cast out. By the man who was supposed to be her mate, her future.
"You have until dawn to leave our territory," Elias continued. "After that, you will be hunted as the abomination you are."
Serena's new wolf body trembled with shock and grief. But beneath those emotions, something else stirred-something dark and powerful that whispered of vengeance.
A growl built in her throat, and she saw Elias flinch. Good. Let him be afraid.
Before anyone could move to capture her, Serena leapt from the altar and crashed through the circle of terrified wolves. Her powerful legs carried her into the forest, away from everything she had ever known and loved.
Behind her, she heard her father's voice, cracked with emotion: "Find her! The Onyx wolf must not escape!"
As Serena ran deeper into the unfamiliar forest, her heart pounded with one terrible truth: she was cursed, hunted, and completely alone. But something told her this was just the beginning of a much darker story-one written in the crimson light of the moon that had sealed her fate.
Serena's paws pounded against the earth as she raced through the dark forest. Her new wolf body was strange but powerful, carrying her faster than she'd ever gone before. She had never ventured this far from pack lands before. Each snap of a twig made her flinch, each shadow seemed to hide an enemy.
After running for what felt like hours, Serena collapsed beside a small stream. Her midnight fur was tangled with leaves and twigs, her purple eyes glowing in the reflection of the water. What was she now? The words echoed in her mind: Onyx wolf. Cursed. Monster.
A twig snapped nearby. Serena's head jerked up, her ears swiveling toward the sound. A familiar scent drifted on the night breeze.
Elias.
He stepped from the shadows alone, still in human form. His golden hair shone in the moonlight, but his blue eyes were cold and distant.
"I told you to leave our territory by dawn," he said, his voice flat. "Why are you still here?"
Serena tried to respond, but only a growl came out. Frustrated, she focused on shifting back to human form. The pain was searing but quicker this time. Within moments, she stood before him, wrapped only in the tattered remains of her white ceremonial dress.
"Elias, please," she begged, her voice hoarse. "I don't understand what's happening. This isn't my fault!"
"Isn't it?" He stepped closer, but kept a safe distance. "The Onyx wolf appears only when darkness taints the bloodline. What darkness have you hidden from us, Serena?"
"None! I've hidden nothing!" Tears streamed down her face. "We were supposed to be mates. You promised to stand by me always."
Something flickered in his eyes-doubt, perhaps even regret-but it vanished quickly.
"That was before I knew what you truly are." He shook his head. "The elders have searched the ancient texts. The Onyx wolf brings only death and destruction. Your presence threatens everyone."
"I would never hurt anyone," Serena whispered. "You know me, Elias."
"I thought I did." His jaw tightened. "The pack has made its decision. Your father agreed."
The mention of her father sent a fresh wave of pain through Serena's heart. "My own father wants me gone?"
"Alpha Caius called for the emergency council himself." Elias's voice softened slightly. "He said no daughter of his would bear the mark of the curse."
Serena felt something crack inside her. Not just her heart, but something deeper-like the foundation of her very self was splitting apart. The dark power she had felt during her transformation stirred again, responding to her pain.
"Elder Thorne found a prophecy," Elias continued, oblivious to the change happening within her. "Born beneath a crimson eclipse, the Onyx wolf will either save our kind or destroy it. No one wants to risk finding out which it will be."
"So you came to kill me?" Serena asked quietly.
Elias hesitated. "I came to warn you. The hunting party is coming-your father leads them. They won't show mercy, not even to you."
In the distance, multiple howls rose into the night sky, closer now.
"Why warn me at all if I'm such a monster?" Serena demanded.
Elias looked away. "Because I promised once to protect you. This warning is the last protection I can offer."
Before Serena could respond, a massive silver wolf burst from the trees-her father. His teeth were bared, his eyes wild with fury and something else-fear.
Behind him came more wolves: her uncles, cousins, pack members who had celebrated her birthdays and taught her to hunt.
Her father shifted to human form with lightning speed, his naked body gleaming with sweat in the moonlight.
"You!" he snarled at Serena. "My own blood, tainted with the curse!"
"Father, please-"
"I have no daughter!" he roared. "My daughter would have been a silver wolf, proud and pure. You are an abomination!"
Each word cut deeper than claws ever could. Serena stumbled back, feeling the strange power inside her surge in response to her pain.
"The council has spoken," her father continued. "Elder Thorne consulted the ancient scrolls. The Onyx wolf must be destroyed before the darkness spreads."
Elder Thorne stepped forward from among the gathered wolves, already in human form. The old man's face was grim beneath his white beard.
"The prophecy is clear," he announced. "An Onyx wolf born under a crimson moon brings the End of Days. The curse must be purged from our lands."
"I haven't done anything wrong!" Serena cried out.
"Your existence is wrong," Elder Thorne replied coldly. "Your mother hid this taint well, but blood will tell. Now we know why Isolde Vale disappeared all those years ago-she knew what darkness she carried."
"My mother died when I was a baby," Serena protested.
"Did she?" Elder Thorne's eyes narrowed. "Or did she run to hide her shame? Perhaps she knew what you would become."
Whispers rippled through the gathered wolves. Serena's head spun with confusion and hurt.
"Enough talk," her father growled. "The abomination dies tonight."
He began to shift back to wolf form, bones cracking as his body changed. The other pack members followed suit, their human forms melting away to reveal snarling wolves.
Elias still stood apart, his face troubled. "Caius, perhaps there's another way-"
"Stand aside or stand with her," Serena's father snapped before his words dissolved into a growl as his transformation completed.
Elias looked at Serena one last time, conflict clear in his eyes.
"Run," he whispered.
Then he too began to change, his body contorting as he shifted into his wolf form-not silver like her father, but a rich golden color that matched his human hair.
Serena didn't wait to see if he would join the hunt. She reached for her wolf, embracing the pain of transformation. This time, it happened faster, her body remembering the change. Within seconds, her black fur rippled in the moonlight, her purple eyes glowing with an inner fire.
The power that had been building inside her suddenly burst outward. Trees around her bent as if in a hurricane wind. The hunting wolves were thrown back, yelping in surprise.
Serena didn't understand what was happening, but she knew this was her only chance. She sprang away, her powerful legs carrying her deeper into unknown territory.
Behind her, the howls resumed-angrier now, with an edge of fear. Her display of power had frightened them, but also confirmed their worst suspicions. Now they would never stop hunting her.
As she ran, tears streamed from her wolf eyes. Everything she had ever known was gone. Her home. Her family. Her future with Elias. All vanished in a single night, replaced by fear and hatred.
The forest grew denser, the trees more ancient. Serena realized she was crossing into the forbidden lands-territory claimed by the feared Nightfang Pack. Any other time, she would have turned back rather than risk encountering these dangerous wolves.
Now she had no choice. Death chased her from behind, and unknown dangers waited ahead.
The howls of her former pack grew distant. Either they had fallen back or were being more cautious as they approached Nightfang territory. Either way, Serena had gained a small advantage.
Dawn was approaching. The crimson moon that had sealed her fate was sinking toward the horizon. Soon the sun would rise on her first day as an outcast.
Exhausted, Serena slowed her pace. She needed to rest, to hide, to figure out what to do next. The stories about Onyx wolves-were they true? Was she really cursed? And what was this strange power that had erupted from her?
A new scent hit her nose-unfamiliar wolves. Many of them. Nightfang.
Serena froze, caught between her pursuers and this new threat.
Too late, she realized she had run straight into a trap. Shadowy forms emerged from the trees around her, encircling her completely. Not silver wolves like her former pack, but darker ones-gray and brown and black, though none as purely black as she was.
A massive wolf stepped forward. Unlike the others, he showed no fear of her. His fur was dark gray, almost black, with a striking white mark across his chest. His amber eyes studied her with calculating interest rather than fear.
Serena backed away, a growl rising in her throat. But there was nowhere to run.
The large wolf shifted, his form changing to that of a man. Tall and imposing, with the same dark hair as his wolf and cold amber eyes. A jagged scar ran from his left temple to his jaw, giving his handsome face a dangerous edge.
"Well," he said, his voice deep and smooth as velvet, "what have we here? A lone Onyx wolf running from the Silver Ridge Clan." His smile was sharp as a blade. "How very interesting."
Serena snarled, trying to appear dangerous rather than terrified.
"My name is Lucian Draven, Alpha of the Nightfang Pack," he continued, seemingly unconcerned by her display. "And you, little cursed wolf, might be exactly what I've been waiting for."
Serena backed away from Lucian Draven, her black fur bristling. The Alpha of the Nightfang Pack watched her with those calculating amber eyes, not afraid like the others."I have no quarrel with you," Lucian said, stepping closer. "An Onyx wolf could be... valuable to my pack."A howl pierced the air-Silver Ridge wolves, getting closer. Serena's former family hadn't given up the hunt.Lucian's head snapped toward the sound. "It seems Caius Vale wants his daughter back." His smile was cold. "Though I doubt it's for a family reunion."Panic surged through Serena.
Trapped between two enemies, with nowhere to run."Come with me," Lucian extended his hand. "I can protect you."Something in his eyes made Serena hesitate. This wasn't kindness-it was hunger. He wanted something from her.The howls grew louder. Serena made her choice. She lunged past Lucian, darting between two surprised Nightfang wolves and sprinting deeper into the forbidden forest. Behind her, chaos erupted as the Silver Ridge hunting party clashed with the Nightfang wolves."Find her!" Lucian's voice boomed over the snarls and growls. "Bring the Onyx wolf to me-alive!"Now two packs hunted her. Serena pushed her tired legs harder, racing through unfamiliar territory. The trees here were ancient and twisted, nothing like the friendly forest of Silver Ridge. Strange smells filled her sensitive nose, confusing her.Dark clouds gathered overhead, hiding the fading crimson moon. The air grew heavy with the scent of rain.Serena had never ventured this far from home. As a human, she would have been hopelessly lost, but her wolf senses gave her some guidance. Still, this new body felt strange. Her legs were longer, her muscles stronger, but controlling them was difficult. She stumbled often, unused to her own power. The first drops of rain hit her black fur as thunder rumbled overhead. Within minutes, the sprinkle became a downpour. The storm was a blessing and a curse-it would wash away her scent, confusing her hunters, but it also made the forest floor slippery and treacherous.Lightning flashed, illuminating the path ahead for a brief moment. Serena saw she was approaching a ridge. If she could get to higher ground, maybe she could spot somewhere safe to hide. The rain came down harder. Her purple eyes, so sharp in darkness, struggled to see through the sheet of water. Her paws slipped on mud and wet leaves.Another flash of lightning revealed shapes moving through the trees behind her-wolves, though she couldn't tell which pack they belonged to. It didn't matter. None of them were friends.Serena pushed herself up the steep hill, her claws digging into the muddy earth for purchase. The ridge was higher than she'd thought, its side growing steeper as she climbed.A howl cut through the storm's noise-much closer than she'd expected. They were gaining on her.Panic made her scramble faster. Her paws clawed desperately at the hillside. Almost at the top-The ground beneath her front paw suddenly gave way. Mud and rocks crumbled, leaving her scrambling for a hold that wasn't there.Serena slipped, her body sliding back down the hill. She tried to dig her claws in, but the rain had turned everything to slick mud. Her back legs went over the edge of what she now realized was a cliff, not just a hill. For one horrible moment, she hung suspended, front paws still gripping the edge. Then those, too, slipped.Serena fell, tumbling through darkness. Her body slammed against rocks and tree roots jutting from the cliff face. Pain exploded everywhere. She couldn't even howl-the breath was knocked from her lungs. After what seemed like forever, she crashed to the ground far below. The impact sent fresh waves of agony through her body. Something in her left front leg snapped. Her vision blurred as pain threatened to pull her into darkness.Get up! she commanded herself. They're still coming! But her body wouldn't obey. The wolf form that had felt so powerful now lay broken and useless. Serena focused on shifting back to human, hoping her injuries might be less severe in that form. The transformation was agony. Broken bones and torn muscles protested as they reshuffled. When it finished, Serena lay naked and shivering in the mud, rain pelting her human skin. Her left arm was definitely broken, twisted at an unnatural angle. Cuts and bruises covered her body.Lightning flashed again, revealing a small opening in the cliff face nearby-a cave, partially hidden by bushes. Shelter.Serena dragged herself toward it, biting her lip to keep from screaming as pain shot through her broken arm. Each movement was torture, but the howls above drove her forward. If they found her like this, helpless and injured, she wouldn't stand a chance. After what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, Serena reached the cave entrance and pulled herself inside. The space was small but dry, extending back into darkness. Using her good arm, she pulled some of the bushes across the opening, hiding her shelter from view.Only then did she allow herself to collapse, shaking with pain, fear, and exhaustion."What am I going to do?" she whispered to the darkness.Twenty-four hours ago, she had been Serena Vale, beloved daughter of the Alpha, future Luna of the Silver Ridge Clan. Now she was nothing-a cursed outcast, hunted like prey, broken and alone in a storm.Tears mixed with the rainwater on her face. Everything was gone. Her home. Her future. Even Elias had turned against her.Elias. The memory of his face twisted in fear and disgust made her chest ache worse than her physical injuries. How could he reject her so completely? They had grown up together, trained together, promised to rule the pack side by side. One night had erased all of that.Above the cave, howls echoed. The hunters were searching the ridge, but the storm worked in her favor, washing away her scent. As long as she stayed hidden, they might pass by without finding her.Serena huddled deeper into the cave, trying to warm her shivering body. The adrenaline that had kept her going was fading, making every injury throb with renewed intensity. She needed to set her broken arm, find food and water, treat her wounds-but she had no idea how to do any of that. She'd always had the pack to rely on."I can't do this," she whispered, despair washing over her. "I can't survive out here alone."Something stirred in response-that strange power she had felt when confronting her father. It pulsed within her, almost like a second heartbeat. Warm energy spread through her limbs, focusing on her injuries. The pain in her broken arm lessened slightly.Serena gasped, looking down at her arm in the darkness. Was she imagining it, or had the bone shifted straighter? The energy faded as quickly as it had come, leaving her exhausted but slightly less pained. What was happening to her? Was this part of being an Onyx wolf? The curse must be purged, Elder Thorne had said. But was it really a curse? This power-it had helped her, not hurt her.Outside, the storm raged on. Inside the cave, Serena's mind raced with questions no one had answers for. What was an Onyx wolf, really? Why had her transformation triggered such fear? And what had Elder Thorne meant about her mother? Isolde Vale had died when Serena was just a baby-at least, that's what she'd always been told.A flash of lightning illuminated the cave entrance, revealing something Serena hadn't noticed before: scratches on the cave wall. Not random marks, but symbols-crude drawings of wolves and moons, and something that looked like writing in an alphabet she didn't recognize. She wasn't the first to shelter here.Reaching out with her good arm, Serena traced the markings with her fingers. They seemed old, the edges worn smooth by time. One symbol caught her attention-a drawing of a wolf with glowing eyes, standing beneath what looked like an eclipse. An Onyx wolf, like her.Her heart beat faster. Was this a message? A sign?Another howl, closer now. Serena froze, holding her breath. Heavy paws padded past the cave entrance, so close she could hear the wolf's breathing over the storm. The bushes concealing the entrance rustled. Serena pressed herself against the back wall of the cave, praying the darkness would hide her.A massive shadow blocked what little light filtered through the entrance. A wolf stood there, water streaming from its fur, its shape blackened by the night behind it. Serena couldn't tell if it was Silver Ridge or Nightfang-only that it had found her.The wolf's head lowered, sniffing the ground where Serena had dragged herself inside. Then, slowly, it raised its muzzle and looked directly to where she huddled in the darkness.Glowing amber eyes met hers.Lucian Draven had found her.
