Too Late For His Savior Complex

Author: : Charlene
Genre: Romance
My boyfriend Ben and I had been together for seven years. He was the golden boy of our CS department, always helping everyone. But then Jessica, a new junior, entered the picture. His "mentorship" quickly escalated, from late-night, winky-face DMs to public declarations of needing his "heroic" help. When I expressed discomfort, Ben dismissed me, accusing me of being "sensitive" or "dramatic." He even publicly sided with Jessica during her fake apologies. He cancelled our anniversary trip to "save" her hackathon project. Jessica brazenly flaunted their cozy "study session" on social media, on my birthday. Campus rumors soon turned into a full-blown smear campaign, discrediting my academic achievements. The ultimate betrayal came when Ben weaponized my deepest trauma against me, calling me "paranoid." Then he actively sabotaged my career and punished my best friend for defending me. My heart shattered. How could the man I loved for seven years become this cold, cruel stranger, so blind to manipulation? I was heartbroken, but a cold anger ignited. I wouldn't just sit there and watch my life crumble. I quietly gathered every piece of evidence against Jessica's malicious scheme. I poured all my shattered energy into securing the most coveted internship in tech-the very one Ben had always dreamed of. The truth, and my triumph, were about to be revealed.

Chapter 1

Sarah traced the lines of code on her screen, her brow furrowed in concentration. Northwood University' s CS lab was quiet, the late hour keeping most students away. Ben, her boyfriend of seven years, was supposed to be here, helping her debug. He was a senior, a star, always a TA for some class or leading a big project.

Her phone buzzed. A message from Ben.

"Hey, running late. Helping a junior, Jessica. She' s totally lost on the Henderson project."

Sarah sighed. Another junior needing Ben's heroic assistance. She typed back, "Okay. No worries."

But a knot formed in her stomach. It had been happening more often lately.

An hour later, Ben finally walked in, looking pleased with himself.

"Sorry about that. Jessica really needed a hand."

"It's fine," Sarah said, trying to keep her voice light. "How's she doing?"

"She's smart, just a bit... scattered. Easily overwhelmed, you know?"

Later that night, curled up in her dorm bed, Sarah' s phone lit up again. It was a DM, but not for her. Ben had left his laptop open, logged into his social media, and his screen mirrored to the shared monitor they sometimes used for movies.

A new message popped up on his account. From Jessica.

It was a photo, a selfie of Jessica in what looked like her pajamas, a soft smile on her face. The caption read: "Thanks again for tonight, Ben! You're a lifesaver ;) Sweet dreams!"

The winky face felt like a deliberate jab.

Sarah' s breath caught. This wasn't an "accidental" misclick. It was late, and the photo was suggestive, too familiar.

Ben walked out of the bathroom, toweling his hair. He glanced at the screen.

"Oh, that's just Jessica," he said, his tone casual, too casual. He quickly closed the message window.

"Ben, that looked... a little much for a junior you're just helping," Sarah said, her voice carefully neutral.

He frowned, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes. "What are you implying? It was just a thank you. She' s not as calculating as you think, Sarah. She' s just friendly."

"Friendly? Ben, it' s almost 2 AM, and she sent you a pajama selfie with a winky face."

"You' re reading too much into it. She' s just naive, probably doesn't realize how it looks. Don't be dramatic."

Sarah felt a chill. Naive? Ben hated naivety. He always said it was an excuse for stupidity or manipulation. This was the first time he' d ever defended someone so quickly, especially against her.

"I'm not being dramatic, Ben. It's inappropriate."

"Look, she probably sent it without thinking. It's not a big deal." He turned away, dismissing her.

Sarah stared at his back. This wasn't just a crack; it felt like a tremor. Her seven-year relationship, built on what she thought was solid ground, suddenly felt unsteady.

The next day, Sarah decided to talk to Ben again, calmly.

"Ben, about Jessica' s message last night..."

Before she could finish, Jessica herself appeared at their usual table in the campus cafe. She had a bright, innocent smile plastered on her face.

"Oh, hi Sarah! Hi Ben!" she chirped. "I hope I' m not interrupting anything."

She looked directly at Sarah. "I just wanted to apologize if my message last night was weird. I was just so grateful for Ben' s help, and sometimes I get a little too enthusiastic, you know? I didn' t mean anything by it."

Her eyes were wide, her voice saccharine.

Ben immediately softened. "See, Sarah? She didn't mean anything. It's fine, Jessica, don't worry about it."

Sarah looked from Jessica' s perfectly feigned innocence to Ben' s placated expression.

"It still felt inappropriate, Jessica," Sarah said, keeping her voice firm.

Jessica' s eyes welled up instantly. "Oh, I' m so sorry, Sarah! I really didn't want to cause any trouble between you two. I feel terrible."

Ben put a comforting hand on Jessica' s arm. "It' s okay, Jessica. Sarah' s just... a bit sensitive about these things." He looked at Sarah, his expression now one of disapproval. "You' re overreacting, Sarah. She apologized."

Invalidated. Dismissed. Sarah felt a surge of frustration. He was taking Jessica's side, making her out to be the problem.

"My feelings are valid, Ben," Sarah said, her voice tight.

"You' re making a scene," Ben hissed, his eyes darting around the cafe.

Jessica sniffled, dabbing at her eyes. "I should go. I don't want to cause any more problems." She hurried away, looking like a kicked puppy.

Ben watched her go, then turned back to Sarah, his face hard. "Are you happy now? You upset her."

Sarah stared at him, speechless. This wasn't the Ben she knew. Or maybe, it was a Ben she was just starting to see.

Chapter 2

A few days later, Ben tried to smooth things over. He brought Sarah her favorite coffee and a pastry from the good bakery downtown.

"Hey," he said softly, sitting beside her in their shared study spot. "I' m sorry if I was harsh the other day. I just don' t like drama, you know?"

Sarah sipped the coffee. It was a peace offering, but it felt hollow.

"It wasn' t about drama, Ben. It was about respect for our relationship."

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know, I know. But you have to admit, you' ve been a bit... intense lately. More direct, maybe? It' s not like you."

Sarah frowned. "Intense? Because I expect my boyfriend not to entertain late-night suggestive DMs from other girls?"

"No, not just that. Just... generally. You used to be more laid-back."

He was subtly blaming her. Making it seem like her reaction was the problem, not the situation itself. She remembered a time when Ben would have been outraged on her behalf. He would have shut down any girl who crossed a boundary. Now, he was defending the boundary-crosser and criticizing her. The shift was undeniable.

"Maybe I' m more direct because I' m seeing things I don' t like," Sarah said quietly.

Ben pulled her closer, kissing her forehead. "Let' s just forget about it, okay? It' s nothing. Jessica is just a kid."

Sarah didn' t feel reassured. She felt a growing disillusionment. His words felt like platitudes, empty compared to the growing unease in her heart.

The real test came a month later. It was Sarah' s birthday, and also their seven-and-a-half-year anniversary. They had planned a weekend trip to a cabin upstate, something they' d been looking forward to for months.

The day before they were supposed to leave, Ben looked sheepish.

"Hey, um, about this weekend..."

Sarah' s stomach dropped. "What about it?"

"Jessica' s having a major meltdown. Her big 'CodeGenesis' hackathon project is falling apart, and she' s freaking out. She asked if I could help her. It' s really urgent, apparently."

"Ben, it' s my birthday. Our anniversary trip."

"I know, I know, and I feel terrible. But she' s really desperate. She said I' m the only one who can help her save it. It' s a huge part of her grade."

Sarah stared at him. "You' re canceling our trip... for Jessica?"

"It' s not canceling, just... postponing. We can go next weekend. I promise. But she really needs me right now."

His desire to be the savior, the indispensable hero, was overriding everything else.

"No, Ben. This is important to me. To us."

"And her project isn't important to her? Sarah, try to be understanding. I' ll make it up to you."

He didn' t even seem to register the depth of her hurt. He packed a small bag, not for their trip, but for a long coding session with Jessica.

That Saturday, Sarah' s birthday, was miserable. Olivia, her best friend and roommate, tried to cheer her up. They ordered takeout and watched bad movies.

Then Olivia' s phone buzzed. She glanced at it, her expression darkening.

"You need to see this," Olivia said, handing Sarah her phone.

It was Jessica' s Instagram story. A series of photos. Jessica and Ben, huddled close together in front of a laptop, empty coffee cups and snack wrappers scattered around. One photo showed Ben smiling, pointing at something on Jessica' s screen, his arm casually draped over the back of her chair. Another was a selfie of them, both grinning, with the caption: "Coding marathon with the best mentor ever! #CodeGenesis #SaviorBen #StudySession."

The "study session" looked far too cozy. The way Jessica leaned into him, the proprietary smile on her face. It was a deliberate, public flaunting of their closeness. On Sarah's birthday.

Sarah felt a cold wave of betrayal wash over her. He wasn't just helping; he was enjoying this. And Jessica was making sure the world, and Sarah, knew it.

The "CodeGenesis" hackathon results came out a week later. Sarah' s team, which she led, had won second place, a significant achievement. They' d worked tirelessly, and their project was genuinely innovative.

Jessica' s team, despite Ben' s intensive "help," had underperformed. They barely scraped a passing mention.

Soon after, posts started appearing on "Northwood Confidential," the campus gossip blog.

"Sources say Sarah M. was furious her bf Ben P. spent her bday helping junior Jessica L. with CodeGenesis. Jealous much?"

"Heard Sarah M. gave Jessica L. the cold shoulder at the CS social. Guess someone can' t handle a little competition."

Sarah felt sick. Jessica wasn' t just content with Ben' s attention; she was actively trying to ruin Sarah' s reputation, painting her as the jealous, difficult girlfriend. Ben, the perfectionist who valued competence, was somehow blind to Jessica' s manipulative underperformance and blatant social scheming. He was too caught up in being her knight in shining armor. The public humiliation, coupled with Ben's blatant favoritism, was a bitter pill to swallow.
