Chapter 1 Prologue

An elegant young lady exited the hospital and quickly got into a high-end black car.

"You seem very happy, Mrs. Huxley," the driver commented with a smile.

Happy? She was joyful! After three years of marriage with the love of her life, she finally got pregnant. And this news came just at the right time!

Ivy had been in love with Gerard since high school. Gerard Huxley was her senior and the dream boy of every girl. He was handsome, intelligent, with an impressive background. His parents were the presidents of the Huxley group, the most powerful group in Artea, and it was no news that he would be the successor. Not that Ivy cared for the last part.

Looking at the report in her hand, the word 'PREGNANT' couldn't help but make her feel happy, and her smile grew even wider.

Ivy has always been a beautiful girl - big doe-eyes, small plump lips, and a cute button nose, even when she was just a child. Coupled with her sunny and friendly characteristics, it was impossible for one to hate her.

She remembered the first time she met Gerard. At that time, she was only fifteen years old. She was walking along the road when suddenly, some lewd boys dragged her into a deserted alleyway, where they bullied her. Her clothes were torn badly, and just when she thought she would be defiled, Gerard came and rescued her. He even removed his shirt and covered her with it before taking her in his arms and bringing her to the hospital. Since then, she fell madly in love with him.

She braved herself to confess her love for him but was rejected. She was brokenhearted, yet a miracle happened. A few days after her eighteen birthday, Gerard came to her house with his grandfather and proposed to her. How could she say no to the man of her dream?

Even though their marriage reception was low-key, the three years of her marriage were the best time of her life. Gerard spoiled her so much that she didn't need to do anything, nor was she short of money. Gerard lavished her like a madman, especially after becoming the Huxley Group CEO a year ago. She couldn't ask for a more perfect man.

Suddenly a ping sounded from her phone. She quickly checked it to see a message from her husband.

[Come to the Starlight Hotel. You can get the key from the receptionist.]

[Okay.] She quickly replied.

The Starlight Hotel was owned by the Huxley Group. Even though it was located two hours away from the city center, it was still popular with tourists due to the fact that a beautiful bamboo forest and river surrounding it.

"North, please drive to the Starlight Hotel," Ivy told her personal bodyguard cum driver.

"Alright, Mrs. Huxley," North replied and set course toward the suburb.

Gerard always spoiled Ivy during their wedding anniversaries.

During their honeymoon, he bought her to Modestria simply because she loved the roses from there.

On their first wedding anniversary, he bought her a custom grand piano from a piano master because she loved to play the piano.

On their second wedding anniversary, he bought her a horse because she said she wanted to learn how to ride one.

Gerard was always thoughtful when giving her gifts. He always gave her the things she loved.

She couldn't contain her excitement as she thought of Gerard's surprise for her this year. What would he give her?

"North, what do you think Gerard will do this year?" Her excitement was contagious and made North chuckle.

He really liked this Lady of the Huxley family and saw her as his own little sister. She had a sunny disposition yet, at the same time, was gentle, kind, polite, and very down-to-earth. She never put on air, although she was married to the wealthiest family in Artea.

"I'm sure it'll be something that will make you happy, Mrs. Huxley," North answered with a smile.

"You are right, North. No matter what Gerard will give me or do to surprise me, it'll always make me happy," Ivy giggled.

The car drove toward the hotel, and two hours passed, just in time for dinner. The moment the car stopped in front of Starlight Hotel, Ivy jumped down and walked toward the receptionist to get her key.

She went inside the elevator and pressed the number of the highest floor. As expected, Gerard had booked the presidential suit.

Once she was in front of the suite, she quickly swiped the key card and pushed the door open. But the view that greeted her made her freeze in her track.

Her bare-chested husband was leaning against the headboard with a quilt covering the lower part of his body, and one of his arms circled the shoulders of the woman next to him. The woman was his childhood friend, Mia, whom Ivy used to regard as her best friend too.

Mia had the quilt covering her body. Only her head, neck, shoulders, and hands holding the quilt tightly were visible.

When she saw Ivy, she moved closer to Gerard and buried her face in his chest as if seeking protection from Gerard.

"Gerard... Mia... What's... What's the meaning of this?" Ivy's voice trembled as she asked them that question.

"Can't you see? Do you still need to ask?" Gerard snorted. The hard look in his eyes was vastly different from the loving look he usually had for her.

"Gerard, don't be rude to her," Mia's soft voice sounded.

Gerard turned toward Mia, and Ivy gasped as she saw the loving look in Gerard's eyes that was usually reserved only for her was now fixed on Mia.

"You know I only love you, Mia," Gerard said in a loving tone.

He turned to see Ivy and the loving gaze became cold again.

"Sign the divorce paper on the desk," Gerard said coldly.

Ivy gasped again, and her body swayed. "D-Divorce?" she asked in disbelief as she tried to keep her body from falling.

"Sign it!" Gerard roared.

In all the time she had known Gerard, Ivy had never heard him speak to her that way, and her tears flowed down her eyes.

"Sign it. I want to make Mia my legal wife soon," he said coldly before turning to Mia and pulling the quilt over both of them.

"Stop it. Ivy is still here," Ivy heard Mia's shy voice.

"I don't care about her. It's you whom I love, and I can do anything to the woman I love. If she wants to watch, then just let her watch." Ivy heard Gerard's loving voice, saw the figures under the quilt moving, and heard Mia's soft moans.

She didn't need to see what was going on under the quilt to know what they were doing, and her heart shattered into pieces.

Not wanting to stay in the room any longer, she staggered to the desk and signed the divorce paper before running away from the hotel.

She ran and ran and ran, not knowing or caring where she was going. All she knew was that she needed to get as far away as she could from the hotel.

What went wrong? When did Gerard and Mia become a couple? Was she blind all these years? Or were they just too good at keeping their relationship a secret from her? To think of it, was her marriage a sham?

Why did Gerard suddenly propose to her after he rejected her and when they had nothing to do with each other? He had never talked to her before suddenly coming to her house to propose.

Did his grandpa ask him to marry, and he simply chose her because she was the only girl brave enough to tell him of her feelings? No wonder he seldom said to her that he loved her.

Today was supposed to be a happy day. It was their third wedding anniversary, and they should be celebrating it lovingly like the past two years, especially with the news of her pregnancy, but her cheating husband and best friend ruined everything!

Her feet subconsciously brought her to a bridge near the hotel where Gerard used to bring her to watch the sunset and sunrise.

She walked closer to the bridge, but suddenly she heard the screech of a car before she heard a loud bang and felt a force hitting her. Her body flew and hit the railing of the bridge before collapsing to the ground.

All she could feel was pain all over her body, and her eyesight was blocked by sticky liquid. She knew she had hit her head, and her blood was flowing down to her eyes.

"Quick, throw her over the bridge, or Mr. Huxley will fire us," a man's impatient voice sounded.

She recognized that voice. He was one of Gerard's most trusted bodyguards.

Mr. Huxley? Gerard? He wanted to kill her so he could marry Mia? But why? She had signed the divorce paper! Was it not enough? Did he hate her that much?

She would have laughed bitterly if she could, but at this point, she could not move even an inch of her body. Every movement would cause her agony, especially her tummy. She knew she had lost the baby she had waited so long to conceive.

She felt her body being lifted and knew she would die soon. The bridge was high, and underneath was a deep river. There would be no way for her to survive if she was thrown over, especially with the wounds all over her body.

For once in her life, she felt scared of her husband. She never knew him to be cold-blooded and ruthless.

The men lifting her threw her over the bridge, and she knew this was the end of her life.

"Gerard, I regret falling in love with you," she thought before she felt herself being submerged in the icy cold river.

Chapter 2 Regret

Three years later...

A man was seen sitting in his study. The lights were off; the only light filling the room came from the moonlight outside in the sky.

The moonlight illuminated the man's exquisite facial features - thick eyebrows, piercing black eyes as dark as the ink, sharp nose, thin sensual lips, and chiseled jawline. To say that he was handsome was an understatement. He was drop-dead gorgeous and clearly was a man favored by God. Every man envied him, and every lady wanted him.

The man had his eyes down, staring absentmindedly at a paper and a photograph in his hand. There was also a white bunny plushie sitting on his desk.

Soon, his usually hawk-like eyes were filled with sorrow, despair, and heartbreak.

"Ivy..." his soft, hoarse voice sounded from his throat.

Yes, that man was Gerard Huxley.

He caressed the face in the photograph. The woman in it was beautiful. She was smiling brightly, and her eyes were twinkling with playfulness.

"Ivy..." he called out her name again before turning his attention to the paper underneath the photograph.

The paper was the pregnancy report his ex-wife, Ivy, had accidentally dropped during their last encounter. The date was the exact date as this day three years ago. 'Two months pregnant'. Those words were jarring to his eyes.

Suddenly he felt suffocated. What had he done? He had divorced and driven away the only woman he had ever loved, and that event led her to her death.

Why didn't she tell him she was pregnant? Why didn't she insist on staying with him? He knew the answers to those questions but didn't want to acknowledge them.

"Ivy... Come back to me. I didn't mean to divorce you. I never meant to divorce you. You are the love of my life. There was nothing between me and Mia. It was all just an act. I'd torn the divorce paper. We are still married. I love you. So, come back to me, okay?" Gerard whispered as he caressed Ivy's photograph again.

He knew no one would answer him. He knew he would never hear her soft melodious voice again, yet he still waited in the dark. He took the bunny in his arms and hugged it tightly as though the bunny was Ivy.

Finally, a single lone tear escaped from the corner of his eyes, and before long, he broke down and wept like a child. The sound of his sobs was heartbreaking. The butler and servants were even in tears listening to their Master's sorrowful cry.

He could still remember every detail of his first encounter with Ivy. At that time, he was only nineteen and had just lost his parents in a plane crash. He had become a rogue who loved to fight and didn't care about anything else.

His grandfather, elder brother, and even Mia, their childhood friend, couldn't do anything about it. There was too much bitterness in his heart from losing the parents whom he loved so much.

One day, he saw a young girl holding a bunny plushie, talking happily with her parents at the school compound, and he couldn't help the anger that rose in his heart. He hated how everyone's parents were still alive while his had passed away.

When the girl's parents left, he went to the girl and released his anger toward the girl. He knew that girl. She was from a middle-class family way below his level, and she was adopted.

"What's so good about having adopted parents? You know your biological parents must have hated you so much that they abandoned you, right?" he snorted and said those harsh words to the fourteen-year-old girl.

Thinking she was going to cry, a smirk formed on his handsome face.

But the little girl's reaction was way beyond his expectation. Instead of getting angry or crying, she smiled and said, "Maybe my parents had some difficulties and had no choice but to abandon me. But it allows me to have two wonderful new parents who love me so much."

Gerard was stunned hearing her positive words and looking at her radiant smile.

"My mom and dad always told me to see the bright side of life," she said as she looked him up and down.

Gerard had just finished fighting with some punks, and he had scapes, his face was swollen after being beaten up, and his clothes were messy.

"Big brother, you have just gotten into a fight, haven't you? You must have some difficulties in life, but you shouldn't fight with others. You look sad, but you have to see the bright side. My mom said all the sadness we experienced would be replaced by happiness, but if we are willing to work for it," the little girl lectured Gerard.

"So, Big Brother, don't fight or be sad anymore, okay? If you fight or be sad, people will be sad too. Here's my favorite bunny. You can take it. I hope it can bring you happiness as it did for me," the little girl offered her bunny plushie to Gerard.

Gerard didn't know why, but his hand moved, taking the bunny plushie from her.

"Don't be sad anymore, Big Brother. Now you have Bunny to accompany you," the little girl kept smiling radiantly at him.

Suddenly a bell was heard, and the little girl looked at one of the school buildings. "I have to go and attend class now, Big Brother. Don't forget to go to the hospital. Bye, bye," she said and ran toward her class before Gerard could say anything.

Gerard stood frozen for some time while looking at the white Bunny in his hand.

He didn't know why, but the girl's words touched him so much. He still had a grandfather and an older brother who loved him. They would be sad every time he got into a fight. The girl's words were valid.

Since then, he began cleaning up his act. He never fought anymore and began taking his life seriously. At the same time, he kept watch on the little girl, who he later found out was named Ivy. And her bunny had become his most treasured possession.

They were studying in the same exclusive school compound where all levels of education were available - from kindergarten up to University. He was in college while she was still in high school.

He loved looking at her. She was warm and always happy. He would smile every time he saw her laughing. She was like the light in his darkness, lighting everything around her and guiding him toward the world's goodness.

A year later, he rescued her when she was bullied, but she didn't remember him. She thought it was their first meeting. Maybe because he looked different, he looked like the second young master of the wealthiest family in Artea compared to the rogue boy when they first met.

When Ivy confessed her feelings later on, Gerard was over the moon, but he had to reject her as she was still underage. Even though he rejected her, he couldn't help but feel nervous. There were so many boys who liked Ivy; what if she was snatched away?

But his worry was unfounded. No matter how many confessions Ivy received, she always turned them down.

During her eighteen birthday, three years after he rejected her, he was desperate to make her his and begged his grandfather to go to Ivy's house and propose to her.

His grandfather naturally was against it as Ivy's family was too far below their level. But Gerard kept begging him, and after he told his grandfather that Ivy was the one who changed him, his grandfather went to Ivy's parents to propose despite his reluctance. His only condition was to keep the wedding reception as low-key as possible, with only their core family present.

Gerard felt guilty when he told Ivy about his grandfather's demand, but Ivy being Ivy, didn't mind it. She said the rest wasn't necessary as long as she married Gerard.

And so they had a minimal and simple wedding reception with only Ivy's adopted parents, Gerard's grandfather and his butler, his older brother, Louis, and Mia, his brother's girlfriend, and their childhood friend. His grandfather even asked them to keep their marriage a secret from everyone else.

Ivy and his parents didn't object, knowing how society worked.

Even though their marriage was low-key, Gerard always lavished Ivy with everything he had. He wanted her to be happy while being married to him.

As for his grandfather, Gerard was optimistic Ivy would be able to melt the heart of the stubborn old man. And as he had expected, his grandfather began loving Ivy and even treated her as his own granddaughter.

Thinking of the past, Gerard's heart was pierced with regret. Regret... That one word had never appeared in Gerard's dictionary, not even when he was being a punk, but now he was feeling it.

He regretted it. He regretted everything that happened three years ago. He regretted following his grandfather's order to divorce his beloved. He regretted putting an act with his childhood friend, Mia so that Ivy would agree to divorce him.

But what was the point of regretting everything that had happened? It couldn't change the fact that he divorced her while she was pregnant with his child. It couldn't bring his beloved wife back from the dead. But oh, how he wished it could.

Gerard looked at three bottles of wine on the table he had specially prepared for today. He knew the only way to forget everything was to just drown his sorrow with alcohol.

And so, he uncorked the first bottle and began chugging down the wine straight from the bottle, like he was drinking water.

Soon, the three bottles of wine were emptied, and he became drunk.

In his drunken state, he heard the study door being opened, and a soft female voice sounded in his ears.

Chapter 3 You Are Not Ivy

The female voice called him, "Gerard.."

Gerard looked toward the source of the voice, and he could see a blurry female figure.

"Gerard.." the female voice said again.

He could see the female figure coming closer and closer.

As the figure was within arm's length, he reached out his hand and pulled her toward him.

"Ivy, I miss you," he mumbled.

How Gerard missed his wife. He wished for her to appear, and here she was in front of him.

"Let's go back to bed, Gerard," the soft female voice said.

Gerard pulled her closer to him, wanting to feel her warmth and smell her scent.

The moment the female sat down on his lap, he realized it wasn't his wife. They smelled different. Ivy had a distinct soft smell of roses, but this female's rose scent was strong. It made him want to puke.

He pushed her away abruptly. "You are not Ivy," he slurred.

"Gerard.." the female reached out her hand, but Gerard slapped her hand away.

"You are not Ivy!" he shouted with a clear voice despite being drunk.

"Gerard, it's me, Mia," the female finally said her name.

"Mia?" Gerard was confused about why she was in his house at this time of night.

Everyone knew he was not to be disturbed every year on this date. What was Mia doing here?

"I'm here because Grandpa was worried about you," Mia explained. "Let's get you to bed, okay?"

Mia reached out again to support him, but Gerard slapped her hand away again and stood up.

He staggered toward the master bedroom where he and Ivy used to sleep, with Mia following closely behind.

Once in front of the room, Gerard struggled to open the door. When he finally succeeded, Mia stepped forward.

"Gerard, let me help you clean up," Mia said, wanting to enter the room.

Gerard stopped in his track and said coldly, "No woman is allowed to enter the master bedroom except Ivy."

With that, he closed the door with a bang before locking it and collapsing onto the bed. Finally, he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Mia, who was standing outside and nearly hit by the door, had a bitter expression on her face.

She knew she wasn't allowed to be here. She had tried to come every year to see what Gerard was doing on this exact date but was always turned away by the butler.

This year, she lied and said Grandpa Huxley sent her to check on Gerard. No one dared to disobey the Old Master of the Huxley family, and thus the butler let her in reluctantly.

When she heard Gerard's heartbreaking sobs, she was shocked. She had never seen Gerard crying like a baby. Even during his parents' accident, Gerard only cried silently.

Mia had purposely worn a rose-scented perfume similar to Ivy's this night, hoping Gerard would mistake her for Ivy and bring her to bed.

But who would have thought Gerard could distinguish between her and Ivy, even in his drunken state? She felt humiliated by Gerard's rejection! Good thing he was drunk and might not remember what happened tonight.

Ivy, Ivy, Ivy! Mia stomped her foot in frustration and anger.

She hated Ivy with all her heart. She had known Gerard from childhood and was the one who always stayed by his side, even after Ivy died tragically.

But why couldn't Gerard fall in love with her? Why did he choose someone as lowly as Ivy? And why couldn't he forget Ivy?

"Ivy, even in death, you still haunted Gerard, huh?!" Mia snorted with her fists clenched tightly

"I won't give up. Sooner or later, Gerard will be mine," Mia said with determination before she turned around and left Gerard's villa.

The next morning, Gerard woke up with a headache. He automatically reached the bedside table to take a glass of honey water, but his hand only touched the air.

There was no glass of honey water.

He laughed with a sad feeling. Only Ivy would make him honey water every time he got drunk from socializing, but now Ivy was no more.

Dragging himself to the bathroom, he took a shower. When he came out of his bedroom, gone was the heartbroken man. It was replaced by a cold, indifferent handsome man.

Gerard wore a slim-fit three-piece tailored black suit that cocooned his perfect Greek-God-like body. His hair was combed back, making him look mature.

He went downstairs and saw a simple Western breakfast on the table, with two paracetamol on the side.

His servants were all highly trained and knew what to do without him needing to tell them anything. They knew their master had drunk last night, thus the two paracetamol on the table.

His most trusted aid, North, and his secretary, William, were ready on standby.

Gerard sat down and began eating his breakfast. His every move was elegant, and he always gave out a noble aura in whatever he was doing.

After eating, he wiped his mouth with a napkin and took the two paracetamol before standing up and going to the front door.

North and William followed him silently.

They knew their boss had changed since the death of his wife. He used to be chatty and smiled a lot, just like his wife. But now, he was cold and indifferent to everything around him.

Even William and North, and all the servants and butler, were sad and couldn't help but cry during Ivy's funeral. Ivy was always good to them. She didn't treat them as some lowly subordinates.

They reached the Huxley Tower in no time, and Gerard went straight to his private elevator, looking as cold and indifferent as ever, not even bothering to look at his employees.

"What's the schedule for today?" he asked in his deep voice as he leaned back on his swivel chair.

"No meetings, just need you to check and sign some documents," William began saying and paused.

He was hesitant to say the rest of his words as he knew it would affect his boss' mood.

"What? If you have something to say, just say it. Don't waste my time," Gerard said coldly.

William gulped before braving himself to say, "The Old Master asked you to go back to the Huxley Mansion for dinner tonight."

Just as expected, the temperature in the room dropped. Gerard's expression became colder, and his aura became icier. It made whoever was around him feel like they were at the North Pole.

"Documents," Gerard tapped his desk without acknowledging William's previous words.

William quickly placed the stack of documents on Gerard's desk and waited patiently while his boss checked and signed them.

With his boss' current mood, William didn't even dare to breathe loudly in case it would irk the boss.

Once the boss got angry, no one would be at his mercy.

Gerard kept flipping the documents in front of him, signing where he needed to sign, and correcting mistakes on those plans that could have been better executed.

"Rubbish!" he threw nearly half of the documents William had handed him to the floor.

"Get them to redo the whole plans and give them back to me by tomorrow, or they will all be fired," Gerard said harshly.

William knew there was nothing wrong with those documents; they were all done by the qualified staff of Huxley Group.

But with his boss' current mood, he would become stricter and always find faults in everyone. This had been the case since his wife died.

William kept quiet, collected the documents scattered all over the floor, and was ready to flee when they heard a knock on the CEO's office door.

Gerard looked at William and gestured for him to open the door.

Before William could open it, the door opened by itself, and a lady appeared in the doorway.

The lady wasn't beautiful or ugly - she looked average. She was different from Ivy, who was 1.7m tall. This lady was only 1.55m tall, and her facial features were nowhere as beautiful as Ivy's.

Today, she wore a knee-length white summer dress, making her look youthful. With her height, the way she dressed, and her soft temperament, some men would have no choice but to want to protect her.

"Miss Gant," William greeted her.

"Oh, just call me Mia, William. We've known each other for so long. There's no need to be that courteous," Mia laughed.

"Alright, Miss Gant," William smiled politely, but he still didn't change how he addressed Mia.

Some people didn't like Mia, including William and North. They felt she was too scheming and shameless. Even though she was Gerard's brother, Louis's girlfriend, she kept latching herself to Gerard.

People knew she wanted to be Gerard's wife, especially after Louis died, but Ivy got in her way. Even though she never did anything terrible to Ivy, the fact that she always shamelessly wanted to be the third wheel on their dates was evidence enough for everyone to see.

Only Gerard and Ivy didn't see it. Gerard only saw her as his childhood friend, and Ivy, in turn, treated her as her best friend.

Gerard's expression softened when he saw Mia.

"What are you doing here, Mia?" he asked. Even his tone of voice softened too.

No matter what, he couldn't bring himself to be cold toward Mia. Besides being childhood friends and Louis's girlfriend, Mia had once taken a bullet for Gerard's brother. There was no way Gerard could act coldly toward Mia.

"I'm here to bring you lunch," Mia said as she went to Gerard's desk and put the lunch box she had brought in front of him.

She opened the lunch box and showed Gerard the lunch she had prepared.

"Mia, I've told you so many times not to do this. William will always buy me lunch," Gerard said without looking at the food.
