Thompson Family Fraud

Author: : Waterfront View
Genre: Modern
I was finally moving to Austin, landing my dream software job. The apartment search was the last hurdle before my new life truly began. Then the leasing office called. My credit was flagged, not for me, but for 'Thompson Family Ventures LLC' – a company I' d never heard of, with massive unpaid taxes and delinquent loans, all tied to my name. My Uncle Rick was behind it. Turns out my dad knew about it, dismissing it as 'just a formality' even as my apartment application hung in limbo. At our family BBQ, I confronted Rick, but my dad, and even my grandmother, ordered me to 'let it go for family peace,' calling me disrespectful for demanding accountability. The betrayal cut deep; they chose him over me, again. How could they? My future, my credit, my very identity were on the line because of my uncle' s schemes, and my own family was telling me to sacrifice everything to protect him. Was I just expected to bear this burden for 'family peace'? But when Dad collapsed with a heart attack, and Uncle Rick had the audacity to try to strong-arm me into signing away my legal rights under the guise of 'helping' with medical bills, Dad' s denial finally shattered. His tearful apology, and my mom's fierce, unwavering support, finally gave me the clarity – and the blessing – I needed. This wasn't just about me anymore. It was time to fight back. And expose everything.

Introduction

Chapter 1

The woman from the leasing office in Austin sounded hesitant on the phone.

"Mr. Thompson, there's a small issue with your credit check."

My stomach dropped. I needed this apartment for the new software job.

"An issue? What kind of issue?"

"It shows an unpaid state franchise tax bill," she said. "And a delinquent small business loan. Both are linked to a 'Thompson Family Ventures LLC'."

Thompson Family Ventures LLC? I'd never heard of it.

"And it lists you, Michael Thompson, as the Registered Agent and Treasurer."

My mind went blank. Registered Agent? Treasurer?

"That can't be right," I said. "I don't own a business."

"The paperwork is pretty clear, sir. It's affecting your application."

I thanked her, my voice hollow, and hung up.

The excitement about my new job, my new life in Austin, drained away.

A sick feeling started to grow.

This had my family written all over it, specifically, Uncle Rick.

I needed to call my dad.

Chapter 2

I dialed Dad' s number, my hand shaking a little.

He picked up on the third ring, his voice sounding tired, like always.

"Mike? Everything okay, son?"

"Dad, do you know anything about a 'Thompson Family Ventures LLC'?"

Silence on the other end. A long, telling silence.

"Dad?"

"Oh, that," he finally said, his voice too casual. "That's just a little something Rick set up."

"Rick? Uncle Rick?" My voice was rising. "And why am I listed as an officer?"

"Well, you know Rick," Dad mumbled. "He needed a name for some paperwork. For a small side business. He said it was no big deal, just a formality."

A formality. My credit was flagged, my apartment application was on hold, and it was a formality.

"Dad, it is a big deal! There's an unpaid tax bill and a delinquent loan in my name!"

"Now, Mike, don't get worked up," he said, his tone shifting to placating. "I'm sure Rick can explain it. It's probably just a misunderstanding."

A misunderstanding I was now legally tied to.

"He used my name, my information, without my permission, Dad. That's not a misunderstanding."

"He said he talked to you about needing some help," Dad said, his voice weak.

"He never talked to me about any LLC, or making me an officer of anything."

I knew Uncle Rick. He twisted words, omitted details. He probably told Dad some half-truth, and Dad, wanting to believe the best or just avoid conflict, went along.

"I need this fixed, Dad. My new job, my apartment, it all depends on this."

"Alright, alright, son. The Labor Day BBQ is next week. Rick will be there. We can talk to him then. Smooth it all out."

Smooth it out. Like always.

I had a bad feeling this wouldn't be smooth at all.
