The heavy satin of my wedding dress felt like a shroud. Today was supposed to be the most joyous day, marrying Ethan Davenport, cementing a powerful alliance. Instead, I was trapped in darkness, my screams muffled by the thick, soundproof walls of a panic room. Jessica Miller, my childhood companion, had drugged me. Whispers of "unstable" and "breakdown" filled the air as security, loyal to her family, dragged me away. Ethan looked at me, his face unreadable, before turning back to Jessica. Introduction

I clawed my way out, nails broken and bleeding, only to stumble into my own reception.

And there she was, radiant in my gown, standing beside my groom.

"Jessica? Ethan, what is happening?" I croaked, my voice raw.

Jessica's face was a mask of feigned concern, her lies echoing through the ballroom.

"Oh, Sarah, why are you doing this? You know Ethan and I are in love."

Whispers of "unstable" and "breakdown" filled the air as security, loyal to her family, dragged me away.

Ethan looked at me, his face unreadable, before turning back to Jessica.

My heart shattered into a million pieces.

They threw me into the cold New England night.

A blinding flash of headlights.

A screech of tires.

Then, nothing.

I gasped, shooting upright in my own bed, sunlight streaming through the window.

My heart hammered against my ribs, echoing the terror of what had just been.

The date on my phone brought a chilling realization: it was the day before the wedding.

I was alive.

A new message popped up from Jessica Miller in the family chat: "So excited to marry my love, Ethan, tomorrow!"

My blood ran cold.

Her audacity was shocking, but this time, I knew.

This time, she wouldn't win.

Chapter 1

The heavy satin of the wedding dress felt like a shroud.

I was supposed to be marrying Ethan Davenport today, a grand alliance of fortunes.

Instead, darkness.

The panic room door was thick, soundproof. My screams were useless.

Jessica Miller, my childhood companion, the housekeeper's daughter, had drugged me.

Hours later, a sliver of light. I' d managed to pry the lock with a hairpin, my nails broken and bleeding.

I stumbled out, my wedding dress torn, my hair wild.

The reception was in full swing in the Sterling mansion's grand ballroom.

And there she was.

Jessica, wearing a pristine, identical wedding gown, standing beside Ethan, smiling at the guests.

"Jessica? Ethan, what is happening?" My voice was a raw croak.

Heads turned. Whispers started.

Jessica rushed to me, her face a mask of concern. "Sarah, dear, you're not well. Come, let's get you upstairs."

"Get away from me!" I shoved her. "She's an imposter! That's my dress! I'm Sarah Sterling!"

Jessica' s eyes welled with tears. "Oh, Sarah, why are you doing this? You know Ethan and I are in love. You were so supportive."

She had spent months, years, poisoning minds against me, painting me as unstable, her as the capable one.

"She's clearly having a breakdown," someone murmured.

"Poor girl, the pressure must have been too much."

Security guards, loyal to the Millers, grabbed my arms.

"No! Ethan, tell them!"

Ethan looked at me, his face unreadable, then turned back to Jessica. My heart shattered.

They dragged me out, into the cold New England night.

A car' s headlights blinded me. A screech of tires.

Then, nothing.

I gasped, bolting upright in my own bed, sunlight streaming through the window.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

The same room. The same antique dresser. The same view of the sprawling Sterling gardens.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. I picked it up, hands trembling.

The date: the day before the wedding.

I was alive. I remembered everything.

A notification popped up: a new message in the "Sterling Estate & Family" group chat.

It was from Jessica Miller.

"Big day tomorrow, everyone! So excited to marry my love, Ethan! Can' t wait to celebrate with you all! It' s a dream come true, a true love match, not just some Sterling-Davenport arrangement. See you there! ❤️"

My blood ran cold. The audacity.

She was already laying the groundwork, framing it as her love story.

Not this time, Jessica.

This time, I knew.

Chapter 2

A light knock on my door.

Jessica peeked in, her smile sickeningly sweet. "Sarah? You awake?"

She glided in, already dressed impeccably, the picture of innocence.

"I just wanted to talk about tomorrow," she began, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "It's my big day too, you know. I'm marrying my childhood sweetheart."

She paused, looking at me with wide, hopeful eyes.

"Since I don't really have another home, and the Millers' staff quarters are so small... I was wondering if I could use the main wing of the mansion for my departure tomorrow? Just for the photos, and to leave from. It would mean so much."

In my past life, I' d said yes. I' d even given her a diamond necklace, a Sterling family heirloom, as a wedding gift.

My naive, trusting self.

This time, I looked her straight in the eye.

"No."

The word hung in the air, sharp and cold.

Jessica' s smile faltered. "Oh. But... why not? It's just for a few hours."

"Because this is my home, Jessica. And tomorrow is my wedding day. To Ethan Davenport."

Her eyes narrowed, just for a second, before the mask of sweetness slipped back on.

"Sarah, are you feeling alright? You seem... stressed."

Before I could answer, her mother, Mrs. Miller, our head housekeeper, bustled in.

"Sarah, dear, Jessica just told me. Surely you can accommodate her small request? She' s like a sister to you."

Other staff members, the cook, a few maids, hovered by the door, their expressions disapproving.

"It' s not like you' ll even be here when she leaves," Mrs. Miller pressed, her tone turning sharp. "Don't be so selfish, Sarah. Jessica deserves a little happiness."

"Selfish?" I repeated, my voice dangerously low. "You call me selfish for wanting my own home on my own wedding day?"

"She's just jealous," one of the maids muttered, loud enough for me to hear. "Jealous that Jessica found true love."

Gaslighting. They were already at it.

I stood up, slowly.

"Mrs. Miller," I said, my voice like ice. "You are the head housekeeper. Your daughter is a guest in this house, by my family's charity. Neither of you will dictate terms to me."

I walked towards them. They instinctively took a step back.

"Jessica will not use the main wing. She will not disrupt my wedding preparations. And all of you," I looked at each staff member, "will remember who signs your paychecks. It is Sarah Sterling. Not Jessica Miller."

I paused at the door.

"If anyone has a problem with that, they are free to leave the Sterling employment. Permanently."
