Vicente has watched his life being shaken more times than he can count, not only at that moment when they were breaking his heart once again, but also since he was a child. He was only five years old when his mother, tired of the drunken outbursts of her husband, Vicente's father, fled the city, heading for a new country and a new life, leaving him behind. A son would be of no use to a woman desperate to escape the life she leaving behind.
Her second nightmare happened 10 years after losing her mother. The father, who had never stopped drinking, only directing his attacks at the other, the more fragile in the house, had decided that 15 years old are enough to fend for himself. Thrown out of the house, Vincent found himself lost, and had it not been for the parents of his best friend, James, he might not have lasted long enough for another event and all the others that came after because of this one.
At 16, his explosive temper seemed more dangerous than usual. The fights were more constant, and an urge to explode was present. That was when he met Samuel, who explained to him what they were and what he could do. Everyone from that region was known to transform into a specific animal, and when he learned which one, Vincent see himself agree, despite the fear of what this would bring to his life.
So Vincent became the gray wolf that walked beside a black one, that only his own could see. It was a dangerous secret, Vicente needed more than a few months to control his impulses, but when he saw his best friend become one of them, he knew he needed to be strong. He didn't want to expose any of them. The shapeshifters had long worked on going unnoticed, especially to the other creatures, so that young Vincent would ruin everything.
But, when Samuel showed up with Viviane at home during a breakfast just for the boys in the group, Vicente found out about a characteristic of shifters that he wished didn't exist. His life was bad enough without a possible soul mate. As lucky as he was - and there he remembered the death of his father, who had finally died, which gave him his old home back - Vicente knew very well that he would probably be rejected. He could not imagine anyone who would want to be part of his life forever, or rather, until they both died.
And unfortunately Vicente was right. Fate didn't like him, and at that moment the shapeshifter who turned into a wolf found himself wanting to shrink and disappear while being rejected, in a much worse way than he had imagined.
- I can't carry this burden with me, not forever. - the young woman said ahead front of Vincent, breaking something inside him that he didn't even know existed.
- I didn't ask you to carry anything. You have a choice, you can turn your back and leave. I can't, so excuse me if I'm spoiling your act, but I'm the one carrying the burden one way or the other, regardless of what I'm going to do. - Vincent said, ready to close the small door he had opened just for her, the girl who was rejecting him and ignoring what it could do to him by denying him even a simple friendship.
- I could never bear to live near to yoou, Vicente. I never liked to you. I would never feel comfortable living next to a delinquent. That's the truth, and I couldn't live with myself if I stayed here and pretended to feel something I don't.
Vincent felt as if there were daggers entering his heart, at the same time he saw himself beginning to tremble, with the beast inside him desperate to come out and attack, anything he saw in front of him, to vent the anger and hatred that took over the man's still human body. At times like this he regretted having chosen the wolf, for he was about to hurt the human that his shapeshifter heart had chosen.
- Get out of here! Now! He doesn't have to carry the burden of hurting you! - said Samuel, somewhere near Vincent, who closed his eyes, trying to control the uncontrollable.
He searched desperately, for anything that would make him calm down, but when he managed to catch an image of his friendship with James, Samuel and Viviane, the only good thing in his existence, Rachel's voice came back, ruining any progress he had made. Vincent was doomed, there was no longer any doubt.
- He is a monster! - shouted the voice that had brought her comfort, for a few minutes before the truth was exposed, before she opened her mouth and reveal what was bad, inside her very human body.
- Get out now! - shouted James, joining the two, ready to throw out the woman the gods had chosen to be his best friend's companion, when obviously it wouldn't make any sense, at least he saw it that way.
Unlike Samuel, James could only feel disgust for that woman. She had been a part of their school days and he never realized how poisonous she could be.
Seeming to finally see what she was dealing with, Raquel turned and ran home. She left town before Vincent could even get his control back.
And Vicente, who knew he was the most unstable one there and that he wouldn't last long, regretted being that way when he heard those last words, which still disturbed him in his already destroyed heart and would probably continue to do so for a long time.
- It's all right now Vincent. - James said, walking away with Samuel, after they saw Rachel leave, running, afraid of Vincent and that life he never wanted for himself, even with all the stories he had seen told and romanticized.
Vincent growled, leaning over and finally assuming his wolf form. After he ran into the forest, away from everyone, his pack mates knew that he would be even more broken when he returned than he normally was.
None of them could imagine how Vincent would ever be able to overcome another disappointment. Maybe he never would.
Sophia was tired of the pain, the despair, the loneliness that seemed to have no end. Ever since she had been abandoned by her boyfriend Rafael, in a humiliating way, without the chance to even fully absorb those words, which left her feeling like a crap, like nothing, Sophia couldn't be herself anymore, even though she knew things need a change, as soon as possible, before she went crazy for good.
She was just a young human girl in an insane world full of dangerous creatures capable of destroying her, not just with her teeth as she eventually discovered, but it was time to move on.
Sophia had just graduated from high school, was 18 years old, and had dated a vampire for two long years. Or rather, had been a toy for two long years, which only ended because he had had enough. It was time to seek other amusements, he had said as he said goodbye, leaving her a souvenir bite. Sophia almost wished she hadn't gone to visit him as he had asked - something he never did - but whether it was that day or not, at some point that goodbye would come.
Sometimes she wondered why they had to reveal themselves to the world just when it was her turn to be an adult, but she couldn't find an answer, and maybe there wasn't one. The fact was that she had been naive enough to fall into the clutches of one of them.
Lucky for her, or not, she decided to go to the neighboring town, the one place where there was nothing to remind her of those who had hurt her and allowed her her moments of tranquility, with the sea in front of her.
She walked for a while along the beach, before sitting down on the sand and staying there, breathing and feeling calmer with each second, accompanied only by the sound of the sea.
- Hey, you're not supposed to be here. - said a male voice, bringing her out of her own mind.
Sophia turned around in surprise, seeing one of the native men of the place. He looked huge even from a distance, with beautiful muscles and tanned skin.
- And why is that? - she asked, standing up as he approached her, looking even bigger next to her 1.59 height.
- Because people like you are not welcome here.
- Because I'm from the town next door?
he laughed, debauched.
- Because you hang out with the night creatures. Your followers are not welcome in our land.
- Ah!
Sophia stared at him in shock, remembering her conversation with her old friend Lucas from months ago.
- And you know exactly who I am talking about. - he continued, not wiping the debauched smile from his face, not even for the brief moment that he let his sadness show.
Sophia shook her head, pushing away bad thoughts that would only serve to sink her again. It was time for a change, and she would start with the handsome boy in front of her.
- I am Sophia Flores. - she said, holding out her hand and smiling at the surprise in the gray eyes of the huge wolf man in front of her. I didn't know I was capable of surprising any of them, even if they weren't vampires. All the supernatural beings he had met had given him the impression of being tough, indestructible, including the mesmerizing fairies.
- Um... Vicente Ramos. - he said, looking suddenly suspicious, but accepting her hand.
Sophia felt the comfort of squeezing Vicente's warm hand, but after all she had been through it was best to ignore any reaction from her body to find a handsome, tall, and sexy man as effortless as the one standing in front of her at that very moment.
- It's a pleasure to meet you, Vicente. Now, how would you like to show me around? It's been a while since I've been here, since I usually just hang out at the beach.
- You have got to be kidding me!
- Well, I lost the few friends I had, so I thought I might find some new ones. That's not a bad thing, is it?
Sophia didn't realize it, but what she said seemed to awaken something in Vincent, who sighed, giving up, and, taking advantage of the fact that he hadn't let go of her hand, pulled her back the way he had come. He could make an exception, especially for such a young woman who was already showing as much pain as he was. Human, he emphasized in his mind, trying to remember to be careful, for her sake and for his own.
- Okay, but we need to establish some rules Flores.
- Like what?
- Like don't talk to anyone you don't know around here. Not everyone is as amazing as me.
Sophia surprised herself by laughing, while Vincent stared at her, surprised that she looked so beautiful at that moment. She should laugh more, he had no doubt. She was small, next to him of course, with long straight black hair and green eyes that fascinated him at that moment. He felt as if he could get lost there, for as long as Sophia would let him.
- If I see any of my friends along the way, we pretend we don't know each other or like each other. Understood? - she continued, trying to ignore those unfamiliar feelings that were not to be welcomed. He had already been hurt enough for one lifetime, he didn't need to risk it all again, for one more human.
- I understood, and I say the same.
- I thought you didn't know anyone here," he said, trying to look suspicious, although he was struggling to take his eyes off the perfect ass in those tight jeans, which she showed him as she turned around, seeming to look for something, although Vincent suspected she was just thinking.
- Just some of my father's friends and the Bissoli's.
- Ahh, of course. I should have known you were close to the cub.
- Puppy? Lucas too... Sophia stopped before she could say too much. She doubted Vincent would be so friendly if she told him she knew what he was, from a sufficiently reliable source. After all, unlike vampires and werewolves, shapeshifters didn't usually go around showing off. He had only failed to drag her back to her city when he saw her on the beach. Sophia wondered if even they, the vampires and werewolves, were aware of the existence of these beings, who were stronger than they looked -she watched him one more time, trying not to draw attention , seeing the muscles up close, and everything that was tight in those jeans.
She didn't know she liked defined bodies until she met Vicente.
When Vicente stopped, Sophia imitated him and waited, patient, trying to appear calm.
- What do you know about this? - he asked, staring at Sophia with those gray eyes. For a second she had thought they were blue, but they were so light that they really looked gray.
- Enough, but I won't tell anyone. It's not like anyone is going to believe it anyway. Crazy Flores, who after getting involved with a real vampire, is seeing more than she should about shapeshifters too. You are discreet so that your existence is practically ignored and I don't intend to change that, it's none of my business.
She then smiled gracelessly, while Vincent could not find it amusing at all.
- I think I can make an exception. - Vincent said, more to himself than to the small woman in front of him.
- What are you talking about?
- Come on Flores, we have a lot to talk about.
He pulled her to walk beside him and, to the human's surprise, they did talk.
For two weeks Sophia and Vincent met on the beach, avoiding acquaintances and having fun together, with teasing and random conversations, just getting to know each other, without supernatural details, to avoid entering forbidden territory, not only for Vincent, but for his friends as well. His loyalty was to them, and Sophia understood this quickly when she saw him leading the conversations to quieter topics.
Vincent would never admit it, but he was enjoying the time he spent with Sophia, especially when they were alone in his house, just talking and laughing. It was almost like being someone normal again, even if he had never really been. He had no conflicts, no ideas to deviate from the werewolf path, there was nothing that really destabilized him.
And he had been able to make her laugh again. The dead look he had learned to recognize was no longer there. A glow, which showed that Sophia was alive and doing more than just existing, was in place, and he found her too irresistible for his own good in that form, especially as he realized that she had no idea about that.
Sophia really believed that because she was a small woman she should go unnoticed by everyone, but it was just the opposite. Vincent had seen male glances following her around until she had been out of sight long enough in those weeks.
- I'm glad that the vampires' departure was at least of some use. - Sophia said, after Vincent had told her how the new changes had taken place in the little gang.
He had felt the need to tell at least that detail. It was good to be able to be honest with someone who would not interpret it as just anger at them for being what they were.
Vincent held the human's hand, smiling as he saw her shivering skin.
- It was good to you finally be free again too. Sophia, you can do whatever you want now, without fear of having the blood-drinkers' eyes on you the whole time... or rather, the time they can be out on the street.
Vincent laughed, debauched as he always was when talking about the problems the vamps had surviving, causing her to sigh, hiding the smile that liked the teasing.
- Not everything. I still feel lonely. - she said, feeling comfortable enough next to the wolf to tell him that detail.
- I'm here.
Sophia stared at him, seeming to see him for the first time.
- You are, aren't you?
He smiled, squeezing her hand.
- Yes, and... if you like, I can offer you a few extra benefits.
They laughed, although Vincent knew this was not a joke or a lame proposal.
- Thank you Vincent. - Sophia said, still smiling, until she really looked into his eyes and saw only truth.
And at that moment the air seemed to change between them. Seeing her like that, so calm, beautiful and yet irresistible, Vincent let himself be carried away by the moment. Sophia saw the kiss coming, but after those good moments and the desire she felt whenever they were very close to each other, she didn't try to avoid it. It was very tempting and she wanted to know what it would be like.
It was warm, as everything with Vincent seemed to be. She felt the large hand tangle in her hair, which pulled her to him. Sighing, Sophia let herself go too, and soon she was on the wolf's lap, returning the kiss as she had never done before, their tongues entwining and their hands exploring, getting to know each other.
As they pulled away they were both panting.
- Not bad, wolf boy. - she teased, smiling as she found his beautiful gray eyes staring back at her, looking surprised, before grinning back at her.
- I say the same to you, wolf girl. - whispered Vincent, before Sophia broke the small distance between them and kissed him quickly.
...
- I have to go home - Sophia said, while Vincent kissed her neck, looking amused and fascinated at the same time.
She let out small sighs whenever he nibbled her neck, making him excited and eager to see her screaming his name as he made her cum.
- Just a minute more - Vincent said, still feeling her delivered in his lap.
At the same time that he had that intense desire to do everything with Sophia, he was also in no hurry, as if they both had all the time in the world. What mattered most was to have her there, in his arms that held her, not with strength, but with protection.
- No... Vincent!
Sophia, mustering her courage, got off his lap, grinning at his sulky face.
- It's alright! I'll go with you to the car. - Vincent said, smiling again to show that he was just teasing, although they both knew that if Sophia wanted to, he would not complain about having her there with him, for as long as possible.
They followed in silence, remembering the kisses they had exchanged.
- You...
- Same time tomorrow?
They both spoke together and smiled shyly.
- See you tomorrow. - Vincent said, giving her one last kiss before Sophia went home.
She wasn't as happy as she had been, being away from Vincent, but she couldn't help smiling. She was really moving on, with a guy who, despite being a shapeshifter, was her age and handsome enough, in a way that didn't make her feel inferior.
Vincent, on the other hand, was smiling alone as he tidied up the small mess they had made in his modest living room, feeling warm inside as he remembered their moments together. He only wished that everything would go on well, after Lucas controlled himself enough to stay close to his best friend.
The two had already talked it over and intended to reveal that Sophia knew what they were about. Vincent would have to share her with the others and feared what might happen, especially with Lucas around, who was more familiar to her than he could ever be unless the human let him.
The insecurity that arose after Rachel's abandonment then came back with everything, and although they didn't know it, Vincent and Sophia acted in sync.
They both ate dinner in silence - even Sophia, who had the company of her parents at the table -, took a shower while letting stubborn tears escape, and as they lay in bed, lamented everything bad that had happened in their lives that made them have that anguish that prevented them from moving forward without fear.
They both wished to be happy at last, with a certain human and a certain shapeshifter. Maybe fate would take care of them this time.
