Her eyes snap open all of a sudden. She's breathing heavily and already covered in perspiration.

'Are you alright? 'some men move closer to her

She look at them much longer, they don't look familiar. Infact none of her surrounding does.

How did she get there? She search her brain but realize bitterly that it's all blank.

What had happened to her

'Who are you? 'she asked

'Sssh.... 'someone behind her sush her up. She look behind her at the strange faces there. Counting by her eyes, they were ten.

What the...

'What am I doing here? 'she intended to raise her voice but it came out so low and painful. What had actually happened to her.

'You don't remember anything?'a guy at the window side says but didn't turn to look at her, 'You knocked on our door for help'

Then it came at her suddenly, swifly. She found herself in the bush, running but something was chasing her. No, they were human being except the fact that they were so fast and so violent.

She tried to outrun them but unfortunately she fell and they all came rushing down on her. The pains she had when their mouths collided with her body was unbearable.

She eventually ripped herself away and ran toward the first building she saw on sight. Thank goodness, there was someone in. She fainted immediately she entered.

'who are those people?? '

The guy whirl around to look at her, 'Not people but demons eating human'

What the.....

'We need to leave this building, 'one choruse from behind her

'And go where? 'another raise up

'I heard SHALERA is safe and protected. We would be safe when we get there, 'the guy by the window side says.

The lady stand and walk to the window side . Outside are lots of strange looking people walking to and fro. There were blood everywhere.

'For how long have I been out? '

'30 minutes, 'another guy answered.

The guy by the window side stole a glance at her, 'Mane company announced the outbreak of a virus this morning but I didn't know it was this huge. We will leave but I want us all to beware. This virus can only be spread by contact with the blood. So, be careful so they don't bite you'

The lady heart hammer wildly in her chest as she listen

'When you get biten, you have only an hour to be human. After an hour, you become one of them. '

What the fuck!!!

She has been bitten. She was bitten in the forest.

Does that mean she have less than thirty minutes to live as human?

Jessica turn to look at Max, 'How sure are you about this information? '

Max gave her a Stern look, '100% sure miss, 'he then look away, 'there are guns in the store. We need to arm ourselves to protect ourselves. And we need to stick together if we wish to survive',he finish and the guys stood up and went to the store for the guns.

Everyone got busy.

Jessica stood still dumbfounded at the spot. She still couldn't believe she would be one of those bloodsucking animals.

'I know you have been bitten, 'Max words startled her and she found herself looking up at him and unable to even say another word

When she eventually forced out a word, it felt unlike hers, 'How... '

'The marks, I've seen them severally so I know it when I see one. Infact you were bitten by five of them, 'Jessica heart skip a beat and started beating harder as if it would burst out. She watch him look at his wristwatch, 'Let say, you have less than 30minutes to live as human.'

Jessica nod once as if it was no big deal. In all her life, she has been battling with death anyways. It was no big deal if she dies now. She has no family, no one to cry for her when she's gone.

Max walk more closer and look down at her, 'But I promise to shoot the gun through your head immediately you try to harm others, 'then he walk away.

Jessica collapse on the hard floor. She felt numb and tired. Maybe it was the effect of the virus, who knows?

She just found it strange and unbelievable she would be dying this way despite the troubles her father went through when she fell so sick to the point of death.

Should she just continue the journey with them or not?

It won't do a thing since she would be them soon

Maybe she should kill herself

Wouldn't that be better??

She rush up and walk toward the store. Everyone was already holding a gun or two.

She move closer to the man distributing the gun, 'Hey, give me a short one'

The man smile at her and brought out her choice. She collect it and walk out of the store. She needed to go somewhere private to kill herself.

The place seems like an abandoned duplex so it has lots of rooms.

She walks to the far end. There's an empty room there. Noone would hear her and noone would even discover she's dead. Yes, nice place

She smile and place the tip of the gun at her temple.

The memories of her father filled her head. She still couldn't believe she would be gone this way.

Suddenly,Someone sniff, then sobs.

Jessica stopped her act and trace the path of the voice.

There at the corner was an old woman crying and sobbing.

Jessica hide her gun and move closer to the woman in an instant need to comfort.she wonder why the woman was doing there and why she was crying. She bend before her, 'is something wrong ma? '

The woman look up, face reddish and swollen from crying too much.

'My son. He's the only one I've got, 'she sobs again.

Jessica doesn't seem to understand what she meant, 'Is he dead? '

She shakes her head negatively, 'Hes at the hall close to here. I left him there to go buy bread. He's not dead. I know it! Please save my son,please,'the woman beseech softly as she sobs the more

She remember walking past the hall when she was been chased. She didn't stop by that place because her gaze was focused at the duplex from afar. She only saw the hall when she turn back to look at her opponentBut she doubt someone could be there alife. Well,he could be hiding

Then an idea penetrated her mind.

She's going to die anyways. Why don't she die rescuing someone??

Nice idea right?

Jessica walks back inside the main room where people are gathered with the old woman.

Others were ready to move out.

Jessica walk to Max who was talking with another guy about their plans

'Hey, what's the plan? '

'Theres a bus outside this duplex, 'Max says and Jessica could remember running past the bus as well, 'Our first plan is to get inside the bus'

'How long do you think it will take you to reach the bus? '

Max look at Jessica for a while as if to read what she was thinking of, 'We will move in less than 15minutes'

Jessica nod once and thought about it, then look up at Max, 'That means I have 20minutes to get the boy'

Max drew a confused brow, 'What boy? '

Jessica ignore the question and instead move toward the store. Max follows behind quickly.

The stores is nearly emptied but there are still tons of guns she could use.

She looks around and found some rags. She splited them and made some pockets on her ankles and laps. Then she pocketed the guns separately

'What the heck are you doing?? 'Max scream at her when he realizes she had no intention of answering him

Jessica turn to look to him, 'Theres a boy I want to rescue'

Max laugh briefly, 'And what are you? The rescue team? '

'My father used to be a soldier, he taught me how to use the guns. '

Max sigh and hold her firm by her shoulders, 'If you go, you will die'

Jessica blink once then twice, 'Say that again. I'm going to die soon anyways, 'she start to walk away but stops again, 'if you don't see me in the next 20minutes,you can leave without me, 'then she walks away.

Max sigh and rushes to gather more gun. If they are really going to make it to SHALERA, then they need more guns. Who knows, they may not be able to get the chance to see another gun store.

Maxwell Linus is a doctor as well as a soldier. His dad wanted him to be a doctor so he trained to be one.

But his heart desire was to be a soldier so he became one.

He has a daughter, someone he cherished so much after losing her mother to a ghast accident.

And his daughter have just been lost to this epidermic.

So, somehow he realizes how much you want to protect someone you know still lives. If his daughter was still alife, he would have given his life freely to save her.

Somehow, he admire the lady courage but he doesn't believe she would survive it

Jessica Walton was born 29years ago with a special illness. She was the only one the Walton could give birth to before the complications that caused her mom her womb.

Her father tried all he could to make sure they don't lose the only child they can ever have.

Mrs Elizabeth Walton died 12years later, and it was due to her high blood pressure apparently from thinking too much about losing Jessica.

Mr Walton made sure the doctors tried all they could on Jessica case. She survived but lost her father to an accident on the day she responded well to treatment. And that was five years ago

Jessica move to the entrance with an Al also coded gun on her hand.

She thought about her parents and what they went through just to get her well. She knew her parents would make the same decision if they were in her shoe.

She opens the door quietly and walk out, there was no one on sight at the balcony. She bend slightly and start walking quietly.

She was about to step out when she sense someone behind her. She whirl around quickly just enough to dodge the attack. She remove the pistol by her lap and shot the dangerous looking human being

'What the hell are they,'Jessica cuss as she look at the carcass before her. She put back the pistol at her lap pocket and stand up unconsciously

She heard a noise behind her suddenly. She look up and realize she has been spotted.

She start shooting at them at the spot but it seems the noise was calling them over. They got so much and were running toward her

She kick one that has got hold of her leg already and rush away, running back from where she was coming from. Though this time around,she's not going back into the house but going through the back door.

The sour looking people hurries to get to her but this time she was faster. She got to the door,opens it and close it before they got to the door.

She sigh and drop the Al also gun with her. She brings out a bazooka and walk out.

No matter what,she would save the woman's son.

She feels pain suddenly at her leg,then she realize she has been bleeding.

Another mark!

That shouldn't bother her. She would be dead soon anyways

She walk out into the street, alerted.

Someone scream behind her. She whirl around and shot the person.

She start running toward the hall. Another sour looking man came out and she shot her down..

She stops before the hall and opens the door but lots of sour looking humans rushes out

Shit! 'jessica cuss again and took a turn to the backyard. The demons follows.

She got to the door of the back entrance and stops to look back at the demons running to meet her.

She start shooting at them. When the balzooka have been exhausted, she opens the door and walks in. Luckily for her, this side was free

The next thing is how to locate the child within ten minutes. Is that even possible? The hall is so wide. He could be anywhere

She picks a revolver and start walking through the passage way

Jessica wanted to be a soldier but she couldn't because of her health issue. And when she got well eventually, it was too late for her.

She stops suddenly and look afar at a guy with his back facing her.

If she shoot him, it would attract the others. So, she walks very quietly to the next door behind him, while holding her breath

She enters. Everywhere seems so quiet around here.

She goes to the podium and look around... Nothing~~

She walks down and decides to check the decorated tables one after the others... Perhaps hes hiding under one of them.

She stops Midway and sigh. For how long is she going to continue looking at the tables?? Even if she was able to save him , she still wouldn't be able to get him to Max if they miss the time allocated to them.

'Help us! 'a voice scream suddenly, it seems so distant yet close but soft, 'Please help us, 'the voice sobs again, the one typical of a girl.

A girl???

Jessica remove the pistol at her lap and walk through the hall. There's a single room closer to her and she sense it's the only room around

'Please! 'the voice sobs again. She walks with fast strides toward the room and opens the door

She sees a young girl bending over someone and sobbing. She made to walk in but look up slightly at the glass door probably leading outside. The demons were all over the door, hitting everywhere in an attempt to come in. And there's no enough time cos the door was getting weak with the marks already appearing over.

She walks to the girl. The girl scream unconsciously and back out

'Im human, I've come to save you, 'Jessica says and the girl look at her briefly before rushing into her arms..

She pull back after a while, 'My friend. He fainted while we were running, 'she says with so much anguish

Jessica look over at the boy sleeping on the floor. She listen to his heartbeat and discover he's beating well. He might just have collapse due to the stress

She smile mentally, atleast she has found the boy and he is well and alife. She looks at the girl, 'what your name'

'Im MaryAnn Linus, 'the girl says with smiles

Jessica smile too, 'Nice name MaryAnn. But we've got to move now. Do you know if there's another passage way asides from the back door? And the front door '

'No. That's the only way out, 'Mary says and points at the gloom looking human being at the glass door,'Weve tried the front door but they are so much over there as well'

How is she going to do it

Jessica look down at the boy as he regain consciousness

'Are you ok? 'Mary ask happily

'Yes, are we dead? '

Jessica smile at the remark, 'Whats your name? '

'Im John and who are you? '

'Someone who is here to help us, 'Mary interceded

'Ok John and Mary. I'm going to get you through. You just have to follow my instructions, ok? '

'But how are we going to do it? We are going to get killed, 'mary says sadly

'No, I promise to protect you with my life, 'Jessica sworn and look at John, 'i met your grandmother. She's waiting for you already. All you have to do is act like a man and get through this to your grandma ok? '

John nod slowly, 'Yes ma. Let do this'

Jessica smile and stand, 'Now go and hide. I'm going to shoot through the door to attract them. I'm going to walk them out of this place. Take the opportunity to run back toward the duplex. There's a huge bus there waiting, you will see people that will help you there, ok? '

'Yes ma, 'they both chorus

Jessica sigh. She pray she rescue this kids, eventhough it will cause her life. She just doesn't want these kids to die.

She watch the kids run behind a table before walking toward the door.

She shoot at the door twice with the remaining bullet in the bazooka.

The glass shattered and the demons came hurling in.

Jessica took to her heel, looking back to shoot one or two of them so it would attract them over to her..

She runs back to the far end of the hall. She stops and start shooting at them. She remove another pistol but one demon jumps over her and it gave way for another to pull her.

Several teeth collides with her body and she scream!!!

She's finally going, right???

Atleast she has saved the kids.

Her eyes were closed but she could feel the hold on her get lose.

The pains coursing through her was preventing her from concentrating, from seeing that someone was there shooting the demons. Within minutes, they all lay down dead.

'Are you alright? 'the man stood beside her but she still couldn't place the voice. She close back her eyes and opens them again. She could see Max,'Can you walk?'

'My time is almost up. I have just four minutes to live as human. You have to leave me and go'

Max suck in breathe,'No,I can't do that!'

Jessica raise a brow, surprised. Or maybe her ears were playing tricks on her,'How are the kids?'

Max smile,'Saved. You saved them!'the smile made him look more handsome and cuter.

Jessica smile too, feeling fulfilled,'You have to leave now before I turn'

The smile transform to a black frown,'i don't want to leave you.....'the words came out so slow as if he couldn't quite believe what he was saying

'You don't have a fucking choice!'Jessica scream, suddenly alerting his nerves,'im going to kill you if you don't go'

Max sigh once and got up. He turn to leave but looks back at her again,'Thank you so much'

Jessica raise another confused brow,'What for?'

'For rescuing the kids. You saved my daughter too'

A beautiful smile form at the tip of Jessica's mouth,'Maryann is your daughter? No wonder she looks as cute as you'

'Her cuteness is from her mother,'Max smile

'But she wouldn't have been that beautiful if she doesn't look like you'

Max smile again,'i will never forget you Jessica,'then he walks away.

Max still couldn't believe he just saw his lost daughter. He thought she had been bitten by the demons but this Jessica saved her life.

He would never forget her no matter what.

He walks out toward the bus.

Well,after getting the people safely to the bus,he decided to follow Jessica with two other guys. The gunshot they heard led them to where the kids were but the demons were running after them. Thank God,they were right on time cos one of them fell and so the demons was able to get so close to them.

He opens the bus door and climb in before closing and locking the door.

'Dad!'Mary scream and rushes until she ended up in his embrace

'Wheres Jessica?'one of the guy he went out with asked. When they saw the kids,he told them to safeguard the kids to the bus while he go look for Jessica

Max took a deep sigh,'She couldn't make it. She was such a brave woman. I have never seen someone of such'

'She did what we couldn't,we will never forget her,'another man chorus

The old woman whose son she saved burst out crying real hard while her son console her,'She died saving my son. I will never forget her'

No one will,not even Max

Now,the next thing is how to get to SHALERA

And thats a long journey ahead. They really need God to make it.

The drive was in silent. Everyone had something on mind. Who wouldn't?

Everyone in the bus isnt related but they are in the bus together for one thing-"safety"

'We need fuel and food if we wish to survive this journey, 'max voice out suddenly and everything look toward him

'Are you saying we will need to leave this bus to search for food and fuel, 'a lady asked with fear

Max shrug slightly, 'we will be dead anyways if we don't do anything.'

'Hes right. My son is starving already, 'the old woman supported and look at John

'How do we do it then? 'the one driving says

'Theres a nearby filling station. We will get fuel and food there. If you all follow my plans, everyone will be survive', Max assure and when noone talked, he continues, 'I need two men and two ladies to follow me to the shop mart to get the food. Two men will be in charge of filling the bus with fuel. There are some kegs in the bus. It will be to our advantage if we have lots of petrol in the bus incase of emergency, 'he finish and look up

'ive seen the filling station, 'the driver voice out and everyone looks ahead at the deserted filling station. Fear gripped everyone at the sight. It has never happened before that the filling station will be this deserted

'i will join Max to pack the food. We will die anyways if we dont, 'a lady voice out and soon, everyone starts giving themselves roles. Max smile and brought out some guns, then hand it over to each one of them.

'Two people should be on watch outside the bus. Whenever you sight these demons, help others enter, we at the supermart will find a way to come to you'

'i will keep watch..., 'John says and everyone laugh even despite the situation ahead

Max move closer to him and bend slightly, 'Now young boy, you have a role already'

John raise a brow in an amusing way. So cute to be a boy, 'Whats that? '

'Mary told me you saved her life. How about you save it again? Then you have your grandma to protect'

John smile wildly now, 'i will protect them till I die'

Max smile and look up at the old woman smiling down at her grandson. You can vividly behold the pride in her eyes. He look over at Mary and nod once to her.

'Let go,'he informed just as the driver pack the car just close enough to fill it with fuel. He opens the door,there was no demons on sight. He got down and make haste toward the super mart. Behind him,the others also got down to fill the bus with fuel.

'i will go in first,'Max inform and push open the door. It seems so quiet that he bet there are no demons here,'start packing,'he says and the two ladies with them got to work.

Max also brought a bag pack. He walks around and start to put in thing he knows Mary and John would like.

Someone scream suddenly. Everyone rush to the place of incident and caught one of their men struggling with a demon. Max shot his head with the pistol he was holding

'Are you alright?'a woman asked and help the man up

'Were you biten?'another woman asked but he nodded negatively,still breathing heavily

'Better,let hurry up,'Max says and turn to leave but something caught his eyes outside the super mart. He moves closer to the door and look out at the bus. Everyone was inside the bus already as the demons tries to force themselves against the bus as if to break in.

'Max,you need to see this,'another man called in frighten voice, jerking Max out of his thought(not the man that was attacked) Max hurries over to the other side of the super mart and behold hundreds of demons were running over to their side as if they were on a race to win a trophy

'What should we do Max! 'cindy, one of the lady scream with huge fear

Max regain his composure immediately. Lots of people are counting on him, he can't be acting weak already

'we will leave for the bus immediately! Move it! 'he scream and the men move out after giving the ladies what they've taken. When the demons sighted them, they move away from the bus toward them, 'Shoot them! 'Max scream from the shop and quickly take some milk before rushing out of the mart.

They all start getting in but the demons were getting closer. To whirl away time, Max threw the milk and his bagpack at the man beside him and started to shoot at the demons that were getting too close.

When they've all entered, Max turn to enter the bus but a demon held unto his arm and his head move forward to his shoulder but a gunshot saved him. Without waste of time, he hurries in and shut the door.

Everyone was breathing heavily.

Max look around at the person that fired the last shot but he grew more confused. He then decided to ask, 'Who shot the gun? '

'i did, 'a tiny but thick voice said. John walk out from behind the bus. Seems he opened the window at the backseat to shoot the demon.

Max couldn't contain his joy. He move nearer to him and smile, 'Thank you so much'

John smile, 'ive just repaid my debt. You saved my life remember? '

Max smile wildly, 'Then that means am owning you one',he doesn't believe the kid he rescued earlier would now be the person to save him. All thanks goes to Jessica. It's just painful she's no more

'What do we do, they are going to pull us over if they all get here! 'a man scream as he look at the thousand of demons running toward them

Max stand, 'Drive! '

The driver look back urgently, 'But we couldn't get much fuel the other time! 'he protested

'We are all going to die if we don't move now. Drive! 'Max scream and the driver took on the ignition immediately

The demons runs behind them for a while before stopping.

Everyone heave a relief sigh at the same time.

'Theres a thick bush closer. We should be able to park there and sleep for the night, 'Max says and sit.

Then they start distributing the food. Everyone ate in silent except for Mary and John whose gist lasted for hours till they park the bus

Some people needed to ease themselves. Max decided to be among the men to safeguard them.

Everyone that has a business to do was made to get down. Mary and John also got down.

Max move closer to John as they were about leaving, 'Who taught you how to shoot? '

'I play video games alot, 'he smile, 'but that was the first time of holding a real gun'

Max smile and patted his hair slightly, then he brings out a revolver and stretch it out, 'Protect your grandma and your friend for me'

'Gladly sir, 'he smile and saluted playfully.

Mary move nearer, 'Dad, I want a gun too'

'You don't know how to use a gun, 'Max corrected playfully

'But John doesn't know how too'

'But he saved me'

'And dad, I could learn it'

Max laugh, 'And Mary, there's no time'

John laugh and follow the group of people down the bush area with his grandma.

There were only four people in the bus, two women and two men. The two women were talking about the incident while a man was eating, and the other man was just looking through the window at the thick bushes. Suddenly,he felt a sharp pain. To prevent himself from screaming,he grit his teeth and close his eyes

For a moment, he looks around him and realized noone was watching him. Then he pull up the collar of his shirt to view the teeth mark there.

The pains was increasing every moment and it was getting unbearable for him but he was not ready to tell Max he actually got bitten in the mart. If he did, he would have been ostracized. But what would he do if he become one of them and kill innocent people. One part of his mind wants him to kill himself but dying isn't as easy as one thought. The only thing he can only think of is to leave the bus whenever he thinks it's time to turn

But as time flies by,it became as hard as breaking coconut with ones head,his cells are declining faster and soon enough,he could no longer move his legs. Even with this, the pains increases. He now now feel pains at his legs and feets, the pain he can never describe,pains he feels is much than what he could say.

'Hey, are you alright? 'the other man asked, he was already standing so close to him and have been watching him for a while. The man turn to look at him suddenly jerking the life out of the other man. Fear was written all over his face as he speaks, 'What happened to your face? '

The other ladies got alerted at and the question look and up but it was too late. The man got up quickly and bit the other man by the neck. He scream and struggles to let go.

The women scream too just as the demon let go of the man and turn toward the direction of the women.

It was so quick... They couldn't react or do anything

'Are they all done? ',Max ask Peter and he nodded, 'Then let head back to the bus quickly. We don't know if there's any demons around here'

A gunshot!

'Whats that? 'everyone rushes together

Another gunshot!

What the....

'Max! 'steven rush toward him, 'i think something is happening in the bus.

'We need to go and check, 'peter interceded

Max look over at the people all gathered together, 'You need to stay together, we will need to check on somethings and we will be back, 'Max says

'Dad, am scared, 'Mary move nearer and shiver

John move her closer, 'Dont worry, I will protect you and grandma'

Max smile and look up at steven, 'Stay with them with the other men while I and Peter go check what's happening in the bus'

'Alright, 'He nod and Make the people sit down together while he and three more men stood up around them carrying a gun.

Max and Peter rush toward the bus

What's really happening

Everywhere was quiet when they got to the bus. Max move nearer and open the door slightly, the first thing he sees was blood.

'Dont come in, it's a mess, 'a deep voice warned. Max open the door wildly and look up at the guy in the bus. He looks ok

'What happened here? '

'One of your men got bitten, I think it was when we parked at the mart'

What! Max climb in and look over at the man, there was some teeth mark at his collarbone. So, he got bitten and didn't talk. He must have turn to one of the monster. Max look up at the man hopefully, 'Are you hurt? '

'He was so fast, I couldn't stop him. I got bitten before I could shoot him. He also bit those women there. I had to kill them so they wouldn't cause another harm in the future. And am going to kill myself now.'

Max arm fell in total defeat. How could he not have noticed him. Now he has lost three lives due to his carelessness.

Some noises...

'Whats that? 'peter look around him

'Gosh, the gunshot!'Max realizes with bitterness,' They must have heard! 'Max voice out in a desperate voice just as the demons walk out from behind the bush.

OMG!!!! The man inside the bus jump outside with two guns and started to shoot at them.

'What do we do now?? '

Max close his eyes mentally, thinking of something,anything. It feels like a huge load was tied to his head

A soft scream..... Another one.... Max would recognize it anywhere, it belongs to his daughter.

Peter and Max both look at themselves and say at the same time, 'The others! '

The man look back briefly, 'You go save others, I will distract them here, 'he says and continue to shoot the demons.

Max and Peter takes to their heel, running as if their very life depended on it. It does actually, it really does

Max heart was racing as he was racing,he could not think of anything at that moment. It was like his head suddenly went blank. How could he fail in such a way. How could he not know the guy got bitten at the Mart. He just hopes he doesn't lose his daughter
