Katherine looks at the letter in her hand, her personal copy of the settlement. Her heart aches on nights like these, laying alone in bed is something she had grown used to these past five years but the pain was still there.
She hates cold nights, the thought of waking up in the morning to nothing but an empty home and bed unnerved her.
She sighs deeply, she used to dream about him, coming back for her but it never happened sometimes she still does. Now it's started to dawn on her that he never would. After all she has nothing a billionaire could ever want. There are plenty of other women who would be more than happy to fill her shoes. That was always the problem though.
She sets the papers down on the bedside locker thinking about how the cheap bugger photocopied them in black and white rather than in colour. It makes her roll her eyes a little, the tight arse, its not like the coloured ink used would cost a lot to replace and even if it did, to him he wouldn't have seen a difference in bank balance, the amount he rakes in every hour.
She tosses in bed trying to shake the thoughts of her old life. Her marriage. Her ex husband, the billionaire and the image of him cheating on her with her best friend.
Such a typical cliché. Man with too much money has a wife, he isn't happy so he finds someone better, gets caught and he is divorced and free to mingle with whomever he pleases. wife is devastated and somehow manages to build her life up but still feels something is missing.
No, she stops herself. This happens all too often, one minute she's happy living life and then he comes along and infiltrates her life, well mentally that is.
She thought she had moved on she even had a date last night, he was tall, lean, had blonde hair with those bright baby blue eyes that pierce into your soul. He was funny and made her laugh. His name was Dylan he works in the office with her too it was where they met, she could tell the way he looked at her he was interested but was she? She didn't know.
The clock on her bedside locker read 3.45 am and as usual she had spent hours thinking about a man no longer in her life. She told herself off for being so silly he won't ever come back he didn't need some average woman he could have anyone. He definitely didn't stay up for hours at night thinking about her. She rolled on her back closing her eyes to get 40 winks before work in the morning.
Katherine woke up to find the light streaming through the window the next morning. Her blinds left unpulled and yesterdays clothes still on. She looks in the mirror on her bedside locker and shakes her head God she is a mess.
Getting up of the bed she stretches her aching muscles and trudges slowly to her bathroom.
The hot water of the shower pours over her body and she lets herself be enveloped in the warmth, her muscles relaxing as the water massages her aches and pains. After her shower she steps into her usual outfit for work a blouse and fitted skirt alongside a pair of heels. She puts her usual light makeup on and her naturally curly hair is put up in a high ponytail.
The thought of going to work today makes her queasy. She hasn't seen Dylan since their romantic date. And somehow telling him she isn't interested in further contact doesn't seem that appealing.
She walks out of her apartment locking the door behind her and takes the elevator down to the car park.
The drive to Hudson's law firm is a short one about fifteen minutes but today it seems to drag and she can't help but feel something strange is going to happen.
Finding a space in the office car park has always been a nightmare and although she is early as usual its still a struggle. After spending fifteen minutes waiting for someone to leave she finally finds a space and sighs in relief looking at her watch. Still early.
The office is buzzing and smells like morning coffee. Every desk Katherine walks past holds a coffee cup from the ba0rista across the road. But she always found coffee too bitter she prefers something a little sweeter like a smoothie or orange juice.
As Katherine approaches her desk she drops into the chair and inhales a large breath. Being up all night doesn't help anything. She feels absolutely exhausted and she looked it too.
Mickey the boss walks over to her desk and she turns her head up to look at him. He was wearing a navy suit with a stripped tie.
"Katherine I have good news for you" his smile never reaches his eyes but she smiles back anyway.
"Oh really sir please enlighten me" waiting for his response makes her nervous. No talking to mickey always makes her nervous. He has the ability to give her the sack with a click of his strangely manicured fingers and she has never forgotten it.
"I have a new case and you're the lawyer on it" he smiles again. "After the good job you did with the last case I'm sure you can handle it. Here is the folder and the clients appointment is in five you should get to the meeting room now" with that mickey turns on his heels and stalks off leaving Katherine staring at him mouth hanging.
He's lucky she's always in.
She huffs and gets out of her rather comfy chair gathers up her bag and leaves in the direction of the meeting room.
Standard meeting rooms at the Hudson are quite nice actually. They have a long table in the middle with chairs at either side a coffee and tea table and a digital screen is in each corner. They have one glass wall so everyone can see who's having a meeting but the glass is fogged a little so it still gives the privacy each client needs to feel comfortable during meetings. It still lacks any personality but then again its a law firm it certainly shouldn't be painted pink with rainbows.
There are 4 main meeting rooms and the one she carries out her meetings in is still dark so she has beat the mysterious client to it.
She unlocks the door letting herself in and starts preparing for the meeting. The door of the room swings open and Katherine raises her head smiling in the direction of the door.
But her eyes widen and her smile drops as she looks at the person standing in the doorway.
"Hello Katherine" his deep voice is still as sexy as she remembers sending a chill down her spine. She tries to find words to reply but her mouth is dry and coincidentally her throat seems to capsize and she finds herself unable to speak.
"Shall we get down to buisness then" the man standing beside him speaks up clear confusion is written all over his face while he stands there looking even sexier than the last time they saw each other.
His muscular figure is hugged perfectly by his Armani suit. It fits in just the right places and as hard as she tries it would be impossible not to drool at the sight of him. His hair tousled to give the impression that he doesn't need to put effort into looking good. Which is true he doesn't. He's sexy in the shower, after waking up and even after sex.
Katherine shakes her head out of it. She has to focus she has a job to do but that's impossible when your staring at a Greek god who just happens to be your ex husband the man who cheated on you. The man you caught cheating on you. The man you caught cheating on You with your best friend.
No that's the past Katherine act civil act like that doesn't mater after all. The past is in the past.
James would be lying if he said he knew Katherine would be his lawyer. His version of acting cool seemed to be working though. If the supprised look on Katherines face was any indication, she hadn't known either. After all if she had she probably wouldn't have taken his case on.
The tension in the room made him angry. He remembered what happened vividly, he fact that he thought she had cheated on him and she caught him doing very un Christian things with that girl, made his blood boil. A huge fucking mess.
She looked good. Her skirt was a little too short and her blouse a little too fitted. He could tell she was giving the men in her office a show. That thought didn't help James's mood one bit.
He let his eyes scan her body. Her legs long and slender a creamy colour. Her waist small and her dark hair pulled up in a ponytail. She turned around to pick a folder of the floor and the view wasn't bad. In all Katherine looked sexy and beautiful, but she always had
No he can't think like this and thankfully henry his legal assistant speaks up. "Shall we get down to business then?" He asks.
James takes a deep breath trying to clear thoughts of Katherine from his head and nods.
Katherine points at two chairs on the opposite side of the table and clears her throat "of course please take a seat Mr Saunders"
He looks at her blankly and sits down holding her eyes captive as he did so.
"Ok so lets go over your case" she speaks her voice is still sexy hearing it again lights up the fire that he used to have every time he was with her. What he wouldn't do to have his arms wrapped around her tiny frame.
James smiles to himself at the thought of it.
"Sir?" James snaps out of his thoughts when he hears katherine addressing him
"What" his tone is icy and she flinches a little at it. He can't loose his focus and he knows it.
"I see you are going up against corporation reddings. That's a big technology corporation. Why?" Her professionalism whilst talking made James think about the divorce he knew he had hurt her and the pain was still evident in her eyes. What was she thinking now?
He hated himself for it and he couldn't control his rising anger. Not at her but himself. But like most when he found himself angry he lashed out he didn't want that to be the case today.
"They borrowed money from us and haven't payed it back" his cool tone made Katherine wonder if she even had an effect on him. He's being so sharp. He had no reason to be hostile towards her he cheated on her. The thought brings tears to her eyes, and with her best friend. Lets just say Katherine cut all contact with that friend a long time ago.
"Right well I will have a look through the case and arrange another meeting with you soon" Katherine tells him shutting the folder and stands up holding her hand out to him. He stands up to and waits for henry to leave first.
He ignores Katherines hand and glares at her. "I'm not touching a whore" he speaks with so much certainty Katherine holds back the tears that threaten to spill out. His anger got the better of him what he said was wrong but why would she torture men wearing that. He knew she wasn't a whore that she didn't cheat. But when she stood and her outstretched arms moulded her breasts together making her blouse stretch that little tighter across her chest he realised what he was missing.
"I don't understand" she sobs trying to hold back all the tears.
"You cheated on me spreading your legs to all the men in the freaking state you slut" his voice is deep and radiates the hate. He's jealous of all them other men but he would never admit it. She never did cheat he knows that but he cant help the rage that's burning in him. He wants her back.
She nods her head and walks quickly past him and to the washrooms.
The bathroom is empty and Katherine locks a stall door. She inhales deeply and slides down the side of the stall. Why her? Why now?
She lets herself cry.
James stands in the meeting room feeling guilty but pushes it to the back of his head. Its her own doing wearing outfits like that in a professional environment. He signals to henry to grab the car and they leave the Hudson law firm.
Katherine had always dreamed of being a big shot lawyer and now she seems well on her way. Its a shame he had to ruin their relationship on her way.
When he found the pictures lying in the white envelope on his desk addressed to him sent from an anonymous source the pain shot through him. To the world he has always been cold, Katherine was the one and only person who got to see his true colours and then she cheated on him with that guy from her office. He felt used and broken, his world falling apart He didn't even think to check if the image was Photoshoped. The anger boiled and he felt he needed to get revenge so he slept with her best friend at the time. She had been trying to seduce him for a while and she walked into his office finding them mid thrust.
The memory makes him cringe at the thought. her face wore a pained expression which he thought was obviously fake at the time. she never cared and he had to pretend neither did he.
It wasn't until after he threw the divorce papers in her face and kicked her out of the house did he find out the truth...
5 years ago... the day of the divorce
Katherine had just taken the test and passed she was glowing with happiness as she walked up to james office to tell him the news. she walked towards James office door when penny his assistant stopped her.
"oh, hi Katherine I didn't know you would be coming in today" she fidgets as she stands blocking Katherines way to James
"It was an unplanned visit, now would you excuse me" penny steps to the side but before Katherine enters she grabs her arm and Katherine turns to look at her
"I'm sorry" penny apologises Katherine stares at her confused but shakes it of before entering the office.
"hi baby I have so-" she stops dead in her tracks as her eyes zero in at the sight in front of her "what the hell?"
James is standing mid thrust inside her naked best friend shelly
Shelly looks up at Katherine and smirks "hi wanna join us" Katherine nearly vomits at the thought but stares right at James.
Who has frozen. " I want a divorce you piece of shit" he spits out coldly with such and icy tone Katherine has to fight back the tears.
"I-I don't u-under-r stand" she stumbles over her words in an effort to make herself seem calm.
"your a slut I never loved you, I was only with you for sex, you mean noting to me our marriage is one big lie the divorce papers are on the desk. I want you out of my house the lawyer will be in touch" he growls at her.
She walks over to the desk picks up the folder. walks back over to James and he looks at her expectantly.
Her hand reaches up and softly caresses his face before coming down hard on it. he groans in pain and when he is busy nursing his sore cheek she takes the opportunity to kick him where the sun doesn't shine. Which hurt because he was naked. with that she flipped her hair and stormed off not before turning and giving shelly the middle finger. no words spoken just a few unfriendly gestures.
Katherine looks at the clock mounted on the wall. Today had been busy three clients in total had requested her as their lawyer. That on top of her already heavy work load had increased the pressure to get cases sorted quicker.
So instead of sitting at home drinking the bottle of sauvignon blanc that has been cooling in the fridge and has her name written on it. She is sitting in the office at ten thirty in a soft office chair bent over a huge leaver arch folder full of notes. Her eyes start to feel heavy after a while and she has trouble keeping them open, so she gives up and decides to call it a day.
Logging of the computer she shuts it down and gathers up four ring binders worth of information, she has on one of her cases. Shrugging her bag on her shoulder gently so she doesn't drop all the folders she's nursing in her left arm. After a little struggle she leaves the office waving goodbye to the security guards Ella and Sam.
Her Mercedes-Benz is waiting for her in the car park.
By the time she gets home it's dark, its a miracle she even got home she could barley keep her eyes open.
She walks straight to her room and collapses on to her soft haven of a bed. She lets out a groan at the thought of having to get up again to take her medication. But hauls herself out of bed to the medicine cabinet in the bathroom.
When she finishes taking the extensive amounts of medication her doctor so kindly prescribed to her. she hobbles over to the safety of her bed.
Sleep came easy to Katherine, her last thought before she drifted into slumber was about what will happen now he's back...
James paced his office, should he appologise? he was rude, Too harsh, Of course he was. He was still thinking of Katherine face when he told her she was a whore. He knew she wasn't, he was lashing out angry at himself.
He went over to the liquor cabinet and poured himself a strong drink. He heard the door creak and looked up to see Elena standing looking at him her eyes where sad and a worried expression on her face. He ignored her, fuck he needed this drink.
He knew in his heart he had been too quick to open his mouth he was always prone to blurt things out in the heat of the moment but he really had let loose on Katherine.
The fact she didn't cheat on him still haunted him but he can't change what had happened all those years ago. He wasn't good enough for her, she was gentle and caring he was a brute. He should just leave her be, hold back the returning feelings he was experiencing and continue this strictly professional communication with her.
Maybe just maybe things will turn out alright. With that final thought James falls asleep in his office chair for the fourth night in a row.
The streets are full of important people on a Thursday morning. People decked out in their business suits. Katherine knew she belonged in the busy scene of new York. she had worked for in it for years. Her marriage had ended and her intentions where to pursue her dreams and wishes of becoming a big shot lawyer in the big apple but every morning when she walks to work she can't help feel a little ache in her heart.
The firm Katherine works in is always busy people constantly moving around but today is unusual the main entrance is dead silent the only sound to be heard is the echo of her stilettos on the marble floor but the hallways are still buzzing with important clients.
Thursdays are always the busiest she never did understand why. For most places it would be a Friday because it was the day before the weekend but people tried to avoid the Friday rush coming on Thursday instead but they all fell into the same trap. Trying to miss the busy day they hit it bang smack in the ass.
Katherine often laughed at it how people walk in smiling like a Cheshire cat at how smart they think they are and When they see the foyer empty like a wasteland on a Thursday they smile all the more but the instant drop of the smile when the elevator doors open to reveal a rather crowded 3rd floor is just comic.
Her cubicles phone rings and she reached to answer it
"Hello this is Katherine gray speaking" her usual office introduction rolls off the tip of her tongue as soon as she put the phone to her mouth.
"Oh i thought you might have kept my name still hanging on to the hope that we still have a future." A smooth husky voice answers
Her eyes automatically roll themselves at the reply she received
"Hello Mr Saunders how may i help you?" her tone comes of rather guarded and she crosses her fingers hoping he hadn't noticed
"I was just wondering if you have decided on a course of action with our case yet" his sexy gruff voice makes Katherine clench her legs together as a familiar sensation runs through her.
"I'm sorry Mr Saunders but i have more than one client at the moment so considering our first meeting was yesterday i haven't had the chance to look at your case thoroughly" she knew he wouldn't be pleased but it was the truth she had eighteen cases on her shoulders two due in court this week and four the next week so she really hasn't had the opportunity to look through it
She hears him sigh deeply and braces herself for the reply she was cautiously awaiting "Katherine, I told you i want this a priority case
What could be more important than me after all i'm probably paying you more than double the other clients." His voice is sharp but his reaction not as harsh as she expected.
She nodded though she knew he couldn't see her "Sir I will look at it this evening after my court case but i'm afraid thats the best I can do" she smiles at her answer standing up for herself was important where James was concerned.
"I am giving you two more days. If you have nothing then I will change over firms " He shouts loudly.
Katherine looks at him dead in the eye, shook by his sudden outburst but manages to reply shakily to his threat.
"I-i haven't done anything wrong Mr Saunders" she smiles at the level of calmness she portrays compared to the butterflies and little bees flying in her stomach.
"You really think that matters Katherine" his voice is lowered now and the level of intensity grows by the minute
"I'm James Saunders i have money and fame he will listen to me i could destroy you and you fucking family and their families so you better watch and make sure your brain is fucking working today or else" with that he hangs up and Katherine feels the hairs on her neck rise as the fear sets in.
Another sleepless night for her then...
