The Woman I Loved, My Ruin

Author: : Dolores
Genre: Sci-fi
The static hiss was the sound of silence, of 108 voices gone. My men, Seal Team Seven, gone. It was supposed to be a routine urban mission, but then a dazzling drone light show filled the sky, communications died, and a single, gasping voice whispered: "...they' re all gone..." The gut-wrenching truth unfolded: a tech mogul' s "future city" launch, Liam Vance, had inadvertently jammed our encrypted channels. But the deepest cut? This mogul was Liam Vance, my wife Dr. Seraphina Vance' s brother. And the technology powering his show, the very tech that sealed my men' s fate, was experimental military gear from my unit's field hospital, requisitioned by Sera herself. When I confronted her, still reeling from the horrific casualty report, she coolly declared them "collateral damage," a necessary sacrifice for "a much greater good." My wife, the woman I loved, stood there with champagne in hand, defending the man who murdered my men. How could she betray not just me, but the very lives I swore to protect, for some twisted vision of progress? The love I felt curdled into a cold, hard resolve. She wanted a future built on the graves of my soldiers? Fine. I would dismantle their empire brick by bloody brick, starting now.

Chapter 1

The static hiss from the speakers was the only sound in the command center.

It was a sound I knew too well, the sound of silence where there should be voices.

My second-in-command, Chloe Hayes, stood beside me, her expression as tight as my own.

"Anything, Viper?" I asked, my voice low.

She shook her head, her eyes fixed on the blank tactical map.

"Nothing, Maverick. Total communications blackout across all three teams in the sector. It' s like they just vanished."

For three hours, we had been blind and deaf. My men, Seal Team Seven, were deep in the city' s most volatile district on an urban pacification mission. It was supposed to be routine. Secure the asset, neutralize the hostiles, extract.

Then, the comms just died.

At the same time, the sky outside the forward operating base lit up with a dazzling, impossibly complex drone light show. The entire cityscape became a canvas for shifting, pulsing patterns of light. I' d heard about it. Some tech mogul' s big launch party for a "future city" project. An annoyance, nothing more. Or so I thought.

A technician in the corner suddenly slammed his fist on his console.

"Sir, I' ve got a signal. A single emergency beacon just broke through. It' s from Sergeant Ramirez' s transponder."

Relief washed over me for a fraction of a second before dread replaced it. A single beacon meant only one thing.

"Patch it through," I commanded.

The static returned, but this time it was broken by a weak, gasping voice.

"...Maverick... this is... Ghost-Three... they' re... they' re all gone..."

The voice cut out.

The silence that followed was heavier than any sound.

Chloe' s breath hitched. "Sir, what are our orders?"

I didn' t look at her. I looked at the drone show still painting the night sky.

"Get me a full casualty report. Now."

The next hour was a blur of fragmented reports and grim confirmations. The final tally was a number that didn' t feel real. One hundred and eight. One hundred and eight of my men, caught in a coordinated ambush, unable to call for support, unable to warn each other. Slaughtered.

The preliminary report from the signals intelligence team came in just as the sun was rising. The communications blackout wasn' t an enemy attack. It was a side effect. The massive, city-wide drone network, operating on a proprietary signal frequency, had inadvertently jammed our encrypted military channels.

The name of the company behind the drones was Vance Innovations.

The name of its founder was Liam Vance.

My wife' s brother.

I left the command center without a word and drove to the penthouse apartment I shared with my wife, Dr. Seraphina Vance. The drone show had ended, the sky now a dull, unforgiving gray.

I found her on the balcony, a glass of champagne in her hand, watching the city below. She was beautiful, brilliant, and the woman I loved.

She turned to me, a radiant smile on her face.

"Alex, did you see it? Wasn' t it magnificent? Liam pulled it off. He actually did it."

I walked past her into our sterile, minimalist living room. My uniform felt heavy, coated with the dust of the base and the weight of my failure.

"Where did he get the tech, Sera?" My voice was flat, devoid of emotion.

She followed me inside, her smile faltering slightly.

"What are you talking about? He developed it. He' s a genius."

"The drone guidance systems. The bio-monitors for the pilots. The high-capacity power cells. That' s experimental military tech, Sera. It' s from my unit' s field hospital. I signed the requisition forms for it myself, for medical applications."

Her face hardened. The brilliant scientist replaced the loving wife.

"I repurposed it. It was being wasted on patching up soldiers when it could be used to build the future."

I stared at her, the pieces clicking into place with sickening finality. The diverted medical supplies. The experimental tech that had gone "missing" from her lab at the base. It was all for him. For Liam.

"One hundred and eight of my men are dead, Sera," I said, the words feeling like stones in my mouth. "They were ambushed tonight. Your brother' s little light show jammed our communications. They couldn' t call for help. They died in silence because Liam needed to throw a party."

I expected shock. Horror. Remorse.

I got none of it.

She took a sip of her champagne, her eyes cold.

"That' s unfortunate, of course. A tragedy. But you have to look at the bigger picture, Alex. Liam' s project will revolutionize urban living. It will save millions of lives in the long run. Those losses... they' re regrettable, but they are collateral damage for a much greater good."

"Collateral damage?" I repeated the words, my own voice sounding foreign to me. The love I felt for her moments ago curdled into something black and corrosive. The trust, shattered into a million pieces.

"You' re a soldier, Alex. You should understand acceptable losses."

"They were not acceptable losses!" I roared, the sound echoing in the vast, empty apartment. "They were my men! They had families! They trusted me!"

I stepped closer, my whole body shaking with a rage so pure it felt like ice.

"You will return every last piece of stolen technology. You will have Liam shut down his entire project. Now. Or I will personally burn his entire empire to the ground. I will make sure he has nothing left but the clothes on his back."

Sera scoffed, a look of pity on her face.

"You' re being emotional, Alex. You can' t touch him. He' s protected. His investors, the city officials... they' re all on his side. You have no power here."

She turned her back on me, dismissing me. Dismissing the 108 lives.

"You' re just a soldier, stuck in your old ways. You don' t understand progress."

I didn' t say another word. I turned and walked out of the apartment. I pulled out my phone and made a single call.

"Viper. It' s me. I have a target list. I want Vance Innovations shut down. I want all assets frozen, all contracts voided, all personnel detained. Use my authority. I want it done in one hour."

"Consider it done, Maverick," Chloe' s voice was grim, but steady.

I went back to the base. I didn' t sleep. I just watched the tactical screens, my mind replaying the last transmission from Sergeant Ramirez.

Two hours later, my personal phone rang. It was Sera. Her voice was no longer calm and dismissive. It was a frantic, panicked shriek.

"Alex! What did you do? What did you do! The federal marshals are here! They' re raiding the expo! They' re seizing everything! Liam is being arrested!"

I listened to her hysteria, my own heart a cold, dead weight in my chest.

"I told you what I would do, Sera."

"Please, Alex, you have to stop this! You' re ruining him! He' s my brother!"

"He is the reason my men are dead."

"I' ll do anything! I' ll get the tech back! Just call them off! Please!"

I hung up the phone.

She called again. And again. For the next three days, she pleaded, she begged, she screamed. I never answered. I let her witness the consequences. I let her watch as the world she had built for her brother, built on the blood of my men, came crashing down around them. I would make her face what she had done.

Chapter 2

The air in the hangar was thick with the smell of ozone and grief.

Rows of flag-draped caskets lined the floor, a silent, terrible testament to the cost of Sera' s betrayal. I stood before them, addressing the surviving members of my unit. Their faces were hollowed out, their eyes burning with a mixture of sorrow and rage.

I didn' t offer them platitudes or empty comfort. I gave them a target.

"Liam Vance," I said, my voice cutting through the silence. "He' s currently out on bail, hiding in his corporate headquarters. He thinks he' s safe. He thinks his lawyers and his money will protect him. He' s wrong."

I turned and walked toward the hangar door, my team falling into step behind me. We moved as one, a single instrument of retribution.

We found Liam in the sleek, glass-walled lobby of Vance Innovations tower, surrounded by a team of expensive-looking lawyers. He was on his phone, yelling at someone, his face flushed and arrogant. When he saw me and my men, all in full combat gear, he actually laughed.

"Well, well, look what the cat dragged in," he sneered, ending his call. "Come to apologize for wrecking my expo, Commander? My lawyers are going to have a field day with you. Illegal seizure, abuse of power..."

He took a step forward, puffing out his chest.

"You' re just a dumb grunt, Chen. You' re out of your league. You think you can come into my world and push me around?" he jabbed a finger at my chest. "You' re nothing. You' re a relic."

Before I could react, Chloe stepped forward.

Her movement was a blur. She grabbed Liam' s wrist, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him face-first against the polished marble wall. The sound echoed through the lobby. Liam cried out, a squeal of shock and pain.

"He is your commanding officer," Chloe' s voice was low and dangerous, right next to his ear. "You will address him as 'Sir' or 'Commander.' And you will show him the respect he is owed, or I will personally break every bone in your pointing finger."

Liam' s lawyers sputtered, shouting about assault and lawsuits. My men formed a silent, immovable wall, blocking them.

"Get her off me!" Liam gasped, his face pressed against the cold stone.

"Chloe, that' s enough," I said calmly.

She released him with a shove. Liam stumbled away, clutching his wrist, his arrogance replaced by a flicker of fear.

Just then, the glass doors of the lobby slid open with a dramatic hiss.

Sera strode in, flanked by two large, private security guards in black suits. Her face was a mask of cold fury. She looked at Liam, then at me, her eyes blazing.

"Alex, what the hell do you think you' re doing?" she demanded, her voice sharp and loud, for all to hear. "Terrorizing my brother? Assaulting him in his own building?"

She rushed to Liam' s side, fussing over him, shielding him with her body as if I were a wild animal.

"Are you okay, Liam? Did he hurt you?"

"He' s a monster, Sera!" Liam whined, playing the part of the victim perfectly. "He and his attack dog here just assaulted me!"

Sera' s head snapped toward me.

"This is what you do, isn' t it? Solve everything with brute force. You can' t stand that Liam is building a better world, so you have to tear him down. You' re pathetic."

She stood between me and her brother, a defiant protector.

"You will not touch him again," she declared. "This ends now. You will call off your witch hunt, and you will leave us alone."

I looked past her, at Liam, who was smirking behind her shoulder. I looked at her, the woman I had once promised to love and protect, now defending the man responsible for the caskets lining my hangar floor. The last ember of warmth in my heart for her died.

I met her fiery gaze with one of ice.

"This is your last chance, Sera," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "Walk away from him. Right now. Acknowledge what he did. Acknowledge what you did. Help me make this right."

Her lips curled into a sneer. "Make what right? Your petty little grudge? Liam has done nothing wrong."

"Then you' ve made your choice," I said. I turned to Chloe. "Viper, proceed with phase two."

Chloe nodded, a grim satisfaction in her eyes.

I turned and walked away, leaving Sera standing there, her arm around her brother, a look of defiant rage on her face. She had no idea what was coming. She thought this was a personal dispute. She didn' t understand that this was no longer about my anger.

This was about justice for 108 dead men. And I was just getting started.
