What should Anthony do?

Chapter 1 Adopted

A luxury BMW was parked at the end of an old street in a small town.

A girl in shabby jeans stood in front of the car door expressionlessly, clutching an equally shabby suitcase.

A middle-aged man was sitting in the driver's seat. He looked at the girl standing outside from the corner of his eyes and frowned, seeming dissatisfied with her shabby ensemble.

"Get in the car," he barked.

The girl didn't flinch despite the harshness in the man's voice.

She calmly opened the door and got in the back seat.

"I'm Bill Jenkins. From now on, you're going to be my daughter. Although we're not biologically related, I'll arrange for someone to train you. You'll become a decent Jenkins lady in no time."

As the man spoke, he started the car and zoomed out of the small town.

In the river-view villa, as soon as Maria Jenkins got out of the car, she saw a middle-aged woman standing at the gate.

Judging from the woman's uniform and demeanor, Maria guessed that she was a servant.

"Mr. Jenkins, Miss Jenkins, welcome back. Lunch is ready."

Bill turned to Maria and said, "Since you're new here, Lily will show you around. You have to behave once you step inside this house. Don't even think about bringing your old bad habits to the Jenkins family. Do you hear me?"

Maria nodded indifferently, still as expressionless as a porcelain doll.

"Come with me," Lily said flatly, turning around and entering the house.

Maria didn't say anything. She quietly picked up her old suitcase and followed Lily into the house.

Lily then showed Maria around as she was told to. As soon as they climbed the stairs to the third floor, Maria caught a glimpse of an expensive-looking piano through the crack of a half-open door.

Maria couldn't help but stop in her tracks to take a closer look.

Lily noticed her reaction. She rolled her eyes, thinking that Maria was nothing but a country bumpkin. "That's Miss Vivian's piano room. She's the apple of Mr. Jenkins' eye. She's talented, beautiful, and famous! In fact, she's a celebrity! Do you know what a celebrity is? Do you have TV in your village?"

As she talked about Vivian, Lily looked proud. She thought she could spike envy in Maria.

To her surprise, Maria didn't bat an eyelash. In fact, she looked a little impatient.

"Where is my room?" she asked indifferently.

Lily pulled a long face and begrudgingly led Maria to the guest room on the first floor. The room was quite small, with only a single bed in the corner, a simple wardrobe, and a desk with a chair. There was no room for anything else.

"You'll be staying here," Lily said briskly.

Then she opened the door to the bathroom next to Maria's bedroom and asked, "Do you know how to use the shower?"

Maria didn't want to waste her breath with the arrogant servant, so she just nodded wordlessly.

Seeing that Maria didn't say a word, Lily sneered in exasperation. "Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins live on the second floor while Miss Vivian lives on the third floor. You'll stay here on the first floor. Don't go wandering around, or else you might get lost."

Her tone was harsh. Obviously, she was prejudiced against "country bumpkins" like Maria.

"Okay," Maria replied in her usual indifferent tone.

"Anyway, just stay in your room. I'll call you at meal times. And try not to make any noise. I live next to you and I haven't slept well recently. I'd hate to be woken up in the middle of the night!"

After saying that, Lily turned around and stormed off arrogantly.

Finally left to her own devices, Maria locked the door and proceeded to unpack her things.

She pulled out an old laptop and set it on the desk.

As soon as she turned it on, a chat box popped up.

"Master M, still open for business?"

Chapter 2 Narcolepsy

Maria took a quick glance at the order request. It read, "The website of an international children's charity foundation was hacked. They're requesting that their website security be reinforced."

Then, she scrolled up further and saw that the offered payment for the job was only three hundred thousand dollars.

Maria's network ID in her line of work was M, but the staff addressed her as "Master M" to show their respect for her. She was a member of a well-known hacker organization called Heaven. The staff members would receive orders or jobs from various companies and groups, which they would then forward to the hackers of Heaven, hackers like Maria.

Since the offered payment for this particular job order was only three hundred thousand dollars, it was nearly impossible to convince a divine-level hacker in Heaven to take it. In fact, this amount barely met the standard fees of the lower-level hackers.

However, this charity organization was in a pickle. Their website was supposed to be secure, yet it was still infiltrated by hackers, which put their charity funds at risk. If they wanted to upgrade their system's defense, they would need a specialist-one with higher technical capabilities. Average-level hackers weren't suited for the job.

Fortunately, all staff members knew that among the few top-notch hackers, only Master M would take orders based on her mood and not the reward.

If the client was lucky enough to catch Master M in the right mood, they could pay as low as thirty thousand for a job as tedious as this.

Bearing this in mind, the staff member decided to bite the bullet and went straight to Maria. While waiting for her reply, he couldn't help but hold his breath in anxious anticipation.

"Fine. Ask the client to forward their IP address and all relevant data. I'll get it done soon."

Seeing this, the staff member heaved a sigh of relief and then quickly relayed the information to the client.

Mere minutes later, Maria received everything she asked for.

She began to tap away at the keyboard, her fingers lithe and accurate. She was like a pianist whose fingers danced across the keys harmoniously. Her clear eyes were fixed on the computer screen the whole time, as though some indescribable force drew her towards it.

Fortunately, her laptop was equipped with a silent keyboard. That way, no matter how fast she typed, she didn't make a sound.

It only took a short while for Maria to write a complex series of codes. Even for experts in this field, her codes seemed as obscure as a mystic foreign language.

"Done."

Maria messaged the staff as soon as she finished the task.

Normally, upon the completion of an order, the client would check the work first before proceeding with the payment.

However, as soon as the client found out that it was Master M who had taken the job, they transferred the money to her account even before she was done with her work.

It only took Maria a total of five minutes to finish the tedious task, gaining three hundred thousand dollars in the process.

"Excellent! Thank you so much, Master M! You managed to protect their charity funds! The kids who receive financial help from the client definitely owe you!"

"No need to thank me. It's my job, and I got paid for it."

As soon as Maria sent her reply, she exited the chat box and shut the laptop briskly.

Then, she sank into the bed behind her and fell asleep instantly.

Unbeknownst to everyone, Maria suffered from a rare disease called narcolepsy.

She didn't even bother telling her new family about her condition.

Because of this disease, she tended to sleep longer than normal people. Sometimes, she could even sleep for up to twenty-four hours.

Whenever the narcolepsy struck, Maria would have no choice but to fall asleep on the spot. This meant that she was prone to accidents or even suffocation.

While her condition wasn't fatal, the potential consequences were.

Chapter 3 A Simple Noodle Dish

She was only supposed to take a nap, but by the time she woke up, it was already past eight in the evening.

No one had even bothered to try to wake her up for dinner.

Maria wandered around the house and found Lily in the living room.

"Lily, is there anything I can eat? I overslept, and now I'm hungry."

"Oh, you're finally up. I thought you'd never wake up!"

Lily snorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"The family went out for a concert, so they won't be home until later tonight. Besides cooking, I also have other household chores. You missed dinner and it wasn't my fault. I'm not going to cook for you now. You're from the countryside. You should be able to cook at least noodles, right? There are ingredients in the fridge."

As someone who had also come from a poor family, Lily figured that a bumpkin like Maria should at least know how to cook something basic.

After all, they had no one else to rely on but themselves in the countryside.

Maria stared at Lily, who claimed that she was busy with chores.

The servant was just sitting on the sofa, watching a drama on TV with a huge bowl of popcorn.

Seeing this, Maria couldn't help but roll her eyes. Only a fool would believe Lily's lies.

"Fine. I'll make something for myself."

Left with no choice, Maria went straight to the kitchen.

Lily watched her walk away and smiled complacently.

"Did this bitch really think that I'd drop everything just to cook for her? I don't think so!" Lily scoffed coldly, muttering to herself under her breath.

In her eyes, only the actual members of the Jenkins family were qualified to treat her as a servant. After all, she and Maria both came from poor families. Who was she to boss her around?

After a while, Lily started to hear the sounds of a bustling kitchen.

The sound of vegetables being chopped quickly and skillfully echoed from the kitchen. Lily couldn't help but furrow her brows, wondering if Maria was actually a better cook than her.

"Bah! Impossible!" she muttered, shaking her head. Lily took pride in her cooking. After all, it was the main reason why she still worked in this household.

However, a few minutes later, a mouth-watering aroma wafted over to her nose.

The moment Lily got a whiff of it, she couldn't stop herself from swallowing hard.

What on earth was Maria cooking?

And how the hell could a simple noodle dish smell this enticing?

Lily narrowed her eyes, thinking that Maria might have a unique recipe up her sleeve. Otherwise, how else could a dish so simple smell so good? "If I can learn her recipe, the Jenkins family will be more satisfied with my cooking. Maybe they'll even give me a raise!"

Lily's eyes lit up at the thought. She couldn't wait to make her vision a reality.

She quickly turned off the TV and headed to the dining room to wait for Maria to come out. When she heard footsteps coming from the kitchen, she put on her brightest smile.

"What did you cook? Can I see-"

It was the first time Lily had ever treated Maria with any semblance of respect, but her bright smile instantly disappeared when she saw Maria empty-handed.

"Noodles," Maria answered flatly, her eyes as dull as a lifeless doll.

"I know, I know. But where is it? Where's the food?" Lily asked, her tone taking on a hint of impatience.

"I ate it. I told you I was hungry." Lily's smile froze upon hearing this. Maria, on the other hand, walked past her and headed to the front door. "I'm going out for a walk," she announced.

Lily was too dazed to answer. By the time she regained her senses, Maria had already shut the door behind her.

She badly wanted to know Maria's secret noodle recipe, but she was too proud to ask her directly. So she went to the kitchen to see if Maria had left any clues.

Unfortunately, Maria had already washed the dishes she used. The kitchen was as spotless as before. Everything was in order, save for the lingering, appetizing smell of the noodle dish.

Lily pursed her lips unhappily.

Even later that night, the aroma still wafted around the villa.

The front door was opened again, and Vivian Jenkins stepped inside. She and her parents had just returned from the concert.

"Wow! What is that amazing smell?"

Vivian's eyes widened in delight as she looked at Lily excitedly.

"Lily, what on earth did you cook? Go and cook some more for me!" Vivian ordered at once.

Hearing this, Lily bit her lip.

Of course, she could cook Vivian a simple noodle dish, but it wouldn't be nearly as appetizing as whatever Maria had cooked!
