The Watch That Broke Us

Author: : Qiang Weiwei
Genre: Modern
My 31st birthday should have been a joyful celebration, a moment of genuine warmth with my younger brother, Mike. He gifted me a luxury smartwatch, a gesture that, after years of my financial and emotional support for him, felt like a true acknowledgment of our bond. But the warmth turned to ice moments later when Mike's new girlfriend, Brittany, barraged my phone with aggressive direct messages. "Jealous old maid," she called me, accusing me of trying to "leech" off Mike and demanding *her* watch back. Mike, bafflingly, defended Brittany's behavior, calling it "loyalty" and allowing her to launch a vicious online smear campaign against me. He prioritized her whims over my needs, even lending out my professional camera equipment, only to publicly humiliate me at my office when I requested it back. How could the brother I'd practically raised, the one I'd sacrificed so much for, turn so cruelly against me? Every past act of love and support was now twisted into a cynical attempt to "control" him, dictated by a manipulative stranger. The ultimate betrayal came when he shoved me, leaving me bleeding on my floor, snatching the watch, and walking out, incited by Brittany's taunting text. That moment transformed my pain into cold resolve: this wasn't just about a watch anymore; it was time to fight back.

Introduction

Chapter 1

Sarah turned thirty-one.

Her brother, Mike, gave her a gift, a small, heavy box.

Inside, a luxury smartwatch glittered, a Garmin Hermès, easily fifteen hundred dollars.

"Mike, this is... too much," she said, genuinely surprised.

He grinned, "Happy birthday, sis, it's from my first real bonus."

Sarah felt a warmth spread through her chest, Mike had never been this thoughtful, this generous.

She remembered paying his college tuition, co-signing for his first car, funding that backpacking trip through South America after he graduated.

He was her little brother, she'd practically raised him while their parents built their bakery empire.

This watch, it felt like a small acknowledgment, a step towards his own maturity.

She hugged him, "Thank you, Mike, it's beautiful."

That evening, her phone buzzed, not with birthday wishes.

Instagram direct messages, a flood of them, from an account she vaguely recognized: Brittany, Mike's new girlfriend.

"You jealous old maid," the first message read.

Sarah frowned, scrolling.

"Trying to leech off your boyfriend? He bought that watch for me."

"Give it back. Now."

Sarah's stomach tightened, the warmth from Mike's gift turned cold.

Brittany. She'd met her once, a whirlwind of cheap perfume and an unnerving stare.

Sarah had instantly disliked her, sensed the calculation behind her wide eyes.

Leech? Sarah, a Senior Marketing Manager at a top tech firm, financially independent since her college app made a modest fortune?

The accusation was absurd, insulting.

This was Brittany, staking her claim, not just on Mike, but on what she perceived as his access to money.

Sarah's money, Sarah's generosity, now twisted into something ugly.

The smartwatch on her wrist suddenly felt heavy, tainted.

Chapter 2

Sarah called Mike the next morning.

"Mike, we need to talk about Brittany."

"What about her?" he asked, his voice already defensive.

Sarah took a breath, kept her tone even.

"She sent me some really aggressive messages last night, demanding I return the watch you gave me."

A pause.

"Oh, that," Mike said, "She's just fiercely loyal, Sarah, a bit insecure sometimes."

"Fiercely loyal? She called me a jealous old maid trying to leech off you."

"She didn't mean it like that," Mike mumbled, "She just really likes the watch, and, you know, thought I bought it for her."

"You told her you bought it for me, right?"

"Yeah, of course, but she gets protective, cut her some slack, she's had a tough life."

Sarah felt a familiar frustration rise, Mike always made excuses for people who treated him, or her, badly.

"Mike, her behavior was unacceptable, she needs to apologize."

"Apologize? Come on, Sarah, don't make a big deal out of it, she's just passionate."

Passionate, Sarah thought, or manipulative and greedy.

"It is a big deal, Mike."

He sighed, "Look, I'll talk to her, okay? Just try to get along."

He hung up before she could say more.

Get along. With someone who insulted her and tried to take her birthday gift.

The conversation left a bitter taste.

Later that week, the attacks started.

Anonymous comments on her public Instagram posts.

"Gold digger."

"Washed up."

"Trying to control her brother's money."

Then texts from burner app numbers, crude and harassing.

Sarah blocked the accounts, blocked the numbers.

It was clearly Brittany, escalating, hiding behind anonymity.

Sarah thought about her past, the years she'd put into Mike.

Covering his rent for six months after graduation so he could "find himself."

Giving him her old sedan, perfectly maintained, when she bought a new car.

The coding bootcamp she paid for, hoping it would give him a skill, a direction.

The countless meals, the advice, the emotional support.

He had always taken it, sometimes with thanks, often as if it were his due.

This current ingratitude, this defense of a girl who was so obviously toxic, it cut deeper than the anonymous insults.

Sarah decided she wouldn't let this slide, she wouldn't let Brittany steamroll her or corrupt Mike completely.

Her resolve hardened. This wasn't just about a watch anymore.
