Seraphina POV:
The Finch family cast me into the royal catacombs to be entombed alive beside a fallen Alpha warlord-all because they believed I was a motherless half-wit, incapable of feeling or fighting back. They had no idea that the instant the heavy granite slab slid shut, my dormant soul tore through the veil of worlds and reclaimed this broken body.
When my eyes cracked open in the suffocating blackness, coarse hemp rope was already biting into the raw flesh of my wrists. I didn't scream. I didn't flinch.
A low, dry laugh scraped past my parched throat.
"Locked in freezing kennels, whipped with silver crops for sport, and fed to a tomb just to keep Corda's hands clean?" I whispered, tasting the dry salt of old blood on my lips. "Enjoy your master suite while you can, little sister. Every drop of blood you bled out of this body... I am coming to collect it in bone and ash."
Ten years ago, my soul had fragmented after diving into a frozen lake to drag a dying boy to safety. In that brush with death, my mother's heirloom had awakened, flinging my conscious mind across the dimensional divide into a modern dynasty of trauma surgeons and neurotoxicologists. I lived an entire lifetime there-mastering surgical blades, bio-alchemy, and lethal close-quarters combat-before passing away peacefully in old age.
The very second my modern heart stopped, my soul snapped back to its native vessel.
Right on cue, a faint pulse of silver fire flared against the skin of my right hand. From deep within my flesh, a slender band of liquid starmetal condensed upon my ring finger, glowing with an ethereal luminescence.
I touched the cool metal with my thumb. Tethered directly to my spiritual core was an entire acre of sacred domain-the Lunar Space. Inside lay the bubbling White Jade Spring, sterile surgical bays, rows of diagnostic monitors, and an endless cache of refined modern pharmaceuticals.
"You came with me," I murmured, my pulse steadying.
Looking up at the vaulted granite above, my expression turned to ice. "Less than two hours before dawn. The moment sunlight hits the peaks, the pack elders will ignite the subterranean pyres and roast this tomb into an oven. I didn't survive a lifetime of medicine just to turn to cinder at eighteen."
I dragged my left wrist against the sharp granite edge, aligned my thumb joint with the stone, and shoved with one fluid, ruthless pop.
The joint displaced cleanly. I slipped my limp hand through the hemp binding, caught the bone, and snapped it back into the socket with a quiet hiss.
I dropped onto the freezing flagstones, sprinted up the steps, and gripped the heavy iron grate. I threw my weight against it.
The bars didn't budge. An exterior deadbolt held fast.
"Reinforced iron," I muttered, touching the cold metal. "No breaching this without siege gear."
My gaze shifted back toward the raised basalt bier in the center of the chamber.
"Looks like my only way out is you, dead warlord."
I crossed the floor and stepped up to the stone platform. Kerr Montgomery lay encased in blackened steel armor-a dormant mountain of lethal, predatory power. I pressed two fingers firmly against his carotid artery.
A faint, erratic flutter thrummed against my fingertips.
He was barely hanging on. An ancient northern battle curse had flared in his chest, locking his diaphragm into violent spasms and collapsing his airway.
I grabbed the neckline of his heavy tunic, braced my foot against the bier, and yanked.
The thick linen tore straight down the middle, baring his broad chest to the frigid air.
He was carved from brutal, predatory perfection. Broad shoulders tapered into dense slabs of scarred muscle; his chest was a map of old silver war-wounds, dropping down into tight valleys of iron-hard abs that disappeared beneath heavy leather trousers. Even in a comatose state, a wave of heat rolled off his skin-the rich, dark scent of charred cedarwood, ozone, and dominant Alpha musk.
Across his left breast, directly over his heart, an ink-black curse rune writhed beneath his skin like an angry viper.
I twisted the silver band on my finger. A micro-fine needle and an ampoule of concentrated neuro-antispasmodic materialized in my palm.
Without hesitation, I drove the needle straight into the intercostal space beside the writhing rune, flooding his neural junctions with the compound.
The rune recoiled with a violent sizzle. The rigid paralysis in his chest snapped, but his starved lungs remained locked.
I mounted the stone bier, straddling his waist.
Leaning down until my chest pressed flat against the burning, scarred terrain of his torso, I pinched his nose, sealed my mouth over his cold lips, and forced air straight down his airway.
Once. Twice.
On the third breath, his massive frame bucked upward.
His heart slammed back to life with a deafening thump. Air ripped into his lungs in a ragged, animalistic gasp.
Before I could pull away, an iron hand shot up, wrapping around the back of my neck with bone-crushing force.
He yanked me down. Long, lethal fangs tore through the curve of my shoulder, sinking mercilessly into the sensitive meat of my neck.
A raw, electric shockwave detonated straight through my spinal cord. Primal mate-heat flooded my bloodstream, roaring through our newly tethered souls like wildfire.
Ker's golden eyes widened in shock as he sensed the white wolf bloodline awakening within me.
Seraphina POV:
The moment Kerr tore his fangs from my neck, he surged forward, slamming me down against the freezing granite bier.
The physical escalation was terrifyingly fast. His large, imposing frame pinned me firmly against the cold stone wall, cutting off any path of escape; his rough fingers traced over my face and tilted up my chin, forcing me to lift my head and fully expose my throat to his gaze-a gaze fraught with danger.
We froze, chests colliding in heavy, synchronized friction. The dark scent of charred cedarwood, ozone, and dominant Alpha musk crashed against the fragrance of frost and white lilies bleeding from my fresh bite.
Kerr's golden eyes burned down into mine, ablaze with deep confusion and razor-sharp suspicion.
"Seraphina...?" His voice was a low, velvet rasp vibrating against my collarbone. "The Finch family's mute, brain-damaged foster girl?"
His thumb pressed slightly into the side of my trachea, forcing my head back. "You carry the undiluted blood of the legendary White Wolf in your veins. A bloodline of that magnitude does not breed drooling invalids. Were you playing the fool in the Finch kennels for ten years, or did you steal someone else's face to slip into my tomb?"
I held his golden stare, completely unfazed by his threatening grip.
I wasn't about to tell him that my soul had spent a lifetime on Earth mastering modern surgery and tactical combat.
A cold, mocking smile touched my lips. I raised my hand, resting two fingers lightly against his wrist.
"Playing the fool?" I whispered, leaning slightly into his grip so my lips brushed his knuckles. "If I were acting, Alpha, would I have let the Finch family starve me in the winter kennels and beat me with riding crops for ten years?"
Kerr's jaw tightened, his fingers loosening a fraction of a millimeter.
"Then why did you suddenly wake up?"
"My White Wolf bloodline lay completely dormant until my eighteenth year," I replied smoothly, delivering the clinical lie with absolute composure. "My wolf core was slowly maturing beneath the surface. And two minutes ago, when your fangs tore into my neck, the violent spiritual shockwave of our mate-bond ripped through my body and shattered the final biological seal. Your bite is what woke my blood, Alpha."
Kerr went entirely rigid.
In werewolf lore, the primal spiritual resonance of an Alpha King's True Mate bond was one of the few forces capable of jumpstarting a dormant ancient bloodline. My explanation gave him the exact biological justification he needed, aligning perfectly with his own instincts.
The confusion in his golden eyes shifted into a dark, possessive fascination.
His thumb traced the bleeding puncture marks on my neck, sending an electric shiver straight down my spine.
"So my bride was never an idiot," Kerr murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips. "Only a sleeping White Wolf waiting for her mate's fire."
"I just restarted your stopped heart, Alpha," I said, tapping my fingers against his bare, scarred chest. "Now take your heavy knee off my thigh before you exhaust what little stamina you have left."
His eyes darkened. Instead of pulling back, his hand slid slowly down to the curve of my waist, his grip tightening until the heat of his palm seared through my torn shroud.
"And if I prefer you right here?" he rumbled, his lips hovering a breath from mine.
Before I could push him off, the heavy iron hinges at the top of the stairwell shrieked in the dark.
Boots slammed against stone. The sharp clatter of drawn broadswords echoed down into the vault.
In a heartbeat, the heated tension vanished. Kerr stepped off the bier with silent, lethal grace, his towering frame dissolving seamlessly into the pitch-black shadows beside the stone pillars.
The crypt door was kicked open with a thunderous crash.
Seraphina POV:
Torchlight flooded the crypt as Martha bustled through the heavy doorway, flanked by three heavily armored Ironfang sentries.
The moment the orange light hit her wrinkled, spiteful face, a wave of sickening memories surged from the depths of this body. Martha-Corda Finch's most loyal attack dog. In my ten years as an empty shell, this wretched old woman had taken sadistic pleasure in tormenting me: gleefully handing Corda the silver-tipped riding crops, dumping buckets of freezing wash water over my head in the dead of winter, and kicking the kennel doors shut while I shivered among the hounds.
Instead, the torch slipped from Martha's trembling fingers, clattering onto the wet flagstones.
Standing tall in the shadows beside the slab was Kerr Montgomery.
The three guards collapsed to their knees with a chorus of ragged gasps, slamming their foreheads against the stone. "Alpha King! The gods have returned our sovereign!"
I watched Martha's wrinkled face drain of every single drop of blood. She had come down here expecting to see a dead body; seeing Kerr upright and breathing meant Finch Manor's cowardly scheme-shoving a defenseless 'fool' into the royal grave to spare their precious daughter-was about to blow up in their faces.
I could see the frantic, cornered terror in Martha's watery eyes as her brain scrambled to invent an excuse. Her gaze darted from Kerr to me-standing poised, clean-limbed, and very much alive beside the bier.
"My Lord Alpha, please!" Martha shrieked, dropping to her knees and pointing a bony, trembling finger at my face. "The Finch family had nothing to do with this! We did not send this wretch! She swapped herself!"
I blinked, crossing my arms over my chest.
"The idiot has harbored a sick, twisted obsession with you for years, my Lord!" Martha cried, tears of pure panic spilling down her powdered cheeks. "She attacked Lady Corda in the middle of the night, stole the sacred burial shroud, and snuck into your tomb just to desecrate your resting place! She wanted to throw herself upon your corpse! Guards, execute the treacherous pervert before she taints the King!"
I stared at her, completely and utterly speechless.
The sheer, Olympic-level mental gymnastics this old crone was pulling off in real-time was almost breathtaking.
Did she genuinely think the supreme Warlord of Ironfang was as intellectually bankrupt as Finch Manor's public relations department?
I let out a slow, thoroughly unimpressed breath and raised a single eyebrow.
"A sick obsession?" I murmured under my breath. "Martha, darling, if I were that desperate for a man, do you really think I'd pick one who was already dead and buried under six feet of granite?"
The lead guard, terrified of failing to show vigilance before his resurrected Alpha, panicked and lunged forward with an iron gauntlet to pin me against the slab.
"Nice try, buddy," I muttered.
Thanks to the brutal, muscle-memory conditioning of the tactical hand-to-hand combat and close-quarters disarm drills I had mastered during my previous lifetime on Earth-combined with the explosive kinetic power of my newly awakened White Wolf biology-my body moved before he could even blink.
As his armored fingers closed in, I didn't take a single step back. I ducked smoothly beneath his reach, seized his wrist with both hands, and pivoted hard on my heel. Using his own two-hundred-pound momentum against him, I drove my elbow into his armpit while executing a clean, clinical shoulder throw.
The massive warrior crashed onto the stone floor with a bone-jarring slam, his iron broadsword skittering across the flagstones. Before he could even draw breath, I stepped firmly on his wrist, kicked the hilt upward, and caught the blade in midair with a fluid flick of my wrist.
I leveled the razor-sharp tip exactly half an inch from Martha's crooked nose.
Martha scrambled backward against the damp wall, clutching her throat in absolute horror. "Witchcraft! Treason! The brain-dead foster wretch can wield a blade?!"
"I told you, your story has plot holes," I said, my gaze dropping to sub-zero. "For ten years, you and Corda treated me like vermin in the kennels while Corda built her fraudulent reputation on my late mother's medical manuscripts. And when the Alpha was reported dead, you threw me in here to suffocate in Corda's place. Now that my wolf has awakened, are you terrified of what this 'idiot' is going to tell the High Council?"
Martha began to shake violently, looking past the steel toward the darkness. "My Lord Alpha... do not listen to this demon's lies-"
A wave of crushing Alpha command rolled through the chamber.
Kerr stepped out from the shadows. The sheer psychic weight of his presence forced Martha flat onto the stone, sobbing in terror. He walked past the kneeling guards as if they were dirt, stopping only when his heavy boots stood inches from my bare feet.
Reaching out, he wrapped his calloused bare fingers around the flat of my blade and gently guided the steel down between us.
His golden eyes held mine, dark with unspoken appraisal and a spark of suppressed amusement.
"A substituted bride, an awakened White Wolf, and operative blade work," he murmured, his voice sending a low vibration through the quiet tomb. "You tell a very compelling story, Seraphina."
"Every word is verifiable by medicine and blood, Alpha," I replied smoothly, refusing to back down an inch from the heat radiating off his chest.
Kerr's lips curved into a faint, dangerous smile. "Take her to the scullery cellar," he commanded the kneeling guards, his tone turning into smooth, unyielding iron. "Lock the iron grate."
Martha let out a ragged breath of relief, foolishly assuming I was being condemned.
I met Kerr's gaze and instantly grasped his intent. If the Finch family discovered I wasn't an idiot, the fact that they had used me to replace Korda would likely be exposed. Given the Finch family's considerable influence, they would almost certainly silence me permanently. Kerr kept me under strict surveillance partly to protect me, while simultaneously consolidating his own power within the court.
Looking at his smiling lips, I felt that he didn't dislike this unexpected outcome.
As the guards escorted me past the threshold, the torn collar of my burial shroud caught against a sentry's pauldron.
The fabric ripped cleanly.
A silver teardrop pendant, carved with the roaring crest of a White Wolf, slipped from my inner lining and clattered loudly against Kerr's heavy boots.
