The Unwanted Husband's Unexpected Power

Author: : Tabbie Platt
Genre: Billionaires
I had long embraced my role as the quiet, unremarkable husband, often ridiculed for supposedly failing at business and living off my wife, Brittany. My marriage was a pact, a secret agreement with her father to save his struggling retail empire. For years, I patiently endured Brittany's public mockery, casual disrespect, and blatant infidelity with her personal trainer, Chad. I let the stinging whispers of "kept man" wash over me, maintaining my carefully crafted facade. But at tonight's glittering charity ball, her cruelty escalated. She shamelessly paraded Chad, then, scoffing at my "lack of ambition," she dramatically produced divorce papers. In front of high society, she thrust them into my hands, sneering that I was a burden and she never wanted me. The room erupted in snickers, the crowd visibly reveling in my supposed humiliation, assuming I would beg. They believed I was truly a nobody, a pathetic freeloader, easily discarded. Years of my patience, enduring this charade for a sacred promise, vanished in that moment. Their smug faces, her utter betrayal-did she truly believe I was the penniless man she so gleefully cast aside? I calmly accepted the divorce, a decision that visibly stunned everyone in the ballroom. Then, during the ongoing charity auction, as she brazenly flaunted her wealth, I began to subtly bid against her, defying her by one dollar at a time. I had given her countless chances, but tonight, something truly had to break. My carefully constructed facade finally shattered, and it was time for them all to witness the true identity of the man they had been so arrogantly mocking.

Introduction

Chapter 1

The Starlight Charity Ball glittered.

Chandeliers dripped crystals, casting light on expensive gowns and tailored tuxedos.

Alex Hawthorne stood beside his wife, Brittany Miller.

He wore a simple, dark suit. It was well-made but unremarkable.

Brittany, however, blazed in red sequins, a diamond necklace heavy on her throat.

Her family, the Millers, were "new money," rich from Miller Retail Corp.

Alex was, to everyone here, the quiet husband living off that fortune.

His own business ventures had supposedly failed.

He heard the whispers often. "Kept man." "Brittany's little freeloader."

Tonight, the whispers felt louder.

Brittany didn't try to silence them. She seemed to enjoy them.

Her arm was linked not with Alex, but with Chad Peterson.

Chad was young, handsome, muscles bulging under his tight suit. Her personal trainer, her current infatuation.

"Alex, try not to embarrass me tonight," Brittany said, her voice sharp enough to cut glass.

She didn't look at him. Her eyes were on Chad.

Alex nodded, his face unreadable. "Of course, Brittany."

The auction began. The main item: naming rights for a new children's hospital wing.

A wave of polite interest went through the crowd.

Chad leaned close to Brittany, his voice a stage whisper. "Imagine, 'The Chad Peterson Wing.' Has a nice ring, doesn't it, B?"

Brittany giggled, a high, tinkling sound. "It does, darling! We should get it for you."

The auctioneer started the bidding.

"Fifty thousand to start!"

Hands went up. The price climbed.

Chad, prompted by a nudge from Brittany, raised his paddle. "One hundred thousand!"

Brittany beamed at him, then shot a contemptuous glance at Alex.

Alex watched, his expression mild.

The bidding stalled at one hundred fifty thousand.

"One hundred fifty thousand, going once..."

Chad looked smug. Brittany squeezed his arm.

Then, a quiet voice. "One hundred sixty thousand."

It was Alex.

The auctioneer paused, surprised. "A bid from Mr. Alex Hawthorne!"

Brittany whirled on Alex, her face flushed with anger.

"Alex! What do you think you're doing?" she hissed.

Chad snorted. "Using your money, B, that's what."

The nearby guests tittered.

Alex met Brittany's glare. "I'm bidding on the hospital wing."

"With what?" Brittany scoffed. "The allowance I give you?"

More laughter. Alex felt the eyes on him, mocking, dismissive.

He had married Brittany as part of a deal with her father, Robert Miller.

A deal to save Miller Retail Corp from ruin, using Alex's silent, vast resources.

Robert knew the truth. Brittany did not.

She thought the money that saved her family was just a clever loan her father secured.

Alex had promised Robert he would try to make the marriage work, to protect Brittany.

His patience, however, was not infinite.

Chapter 2

"You have no money of your own, Alex," Brittany declared loudly, ensuring everyone heard.

"You're a nobody. A freeloader. How dare you bid against Chad, against me?"

Her voice dripped with disdain.

Chad smirked, puffing his chest out. "Yeah, Hawthorne. Know your place."

The crowd murmured in agreement, their faces alight with amusement.

Alex felt a familiar coldness settle in his chest.

He had endured this for years. For Robert. For a promise.

But the constant, public humiliation, the open disrespect, it wore him down.

He looked at Brittany, her face twisted in a sneer.

He looked at Chad, preening by her side.

"Whatever Ms. Miller bids for Mr. Peterson," Alex said, his voice calm and clear, cutting through the noise. "I'll bid one dollar more."

A stunned silence fell for a moment.

Then, the room erupted in laughter. Louder this time, more derisive.

"One dollar more?" Chad howled, clutching his stomach. "Is that all your pride is worth, pretty boy?"

Brittany's eyes narrowed. "Are you trying to make a fool of me, Alex?"

"I am your husband, Brittany," Alex stated, his voice still even. "I expect a certain level of respect."

"Respect?" she shrieked. "You earn respect! You don't do anything. You don't have anything!"

"I have never touched your family's money," Alex said quietly.

It was the truth. His own fortune was so immense, the Miller wealth was pocket change.

He had come into this marriage hoping to find something real, away from the pressures of his true life.

He had wanted to test Brittany's character.

She had failed, spectacularly, every single day.

"Liar!" Brittany snapped. "Everyone knows you're broke!"

The auctioneer, flustered, tried to regain control. "The bid is one hundred sixty thousand from Mr. Hawthorne. Do I hear one seventy?"

Brittany, incensed, grabbed her own paddle.

"Two hundred thousand!" she yelled, glaring at Alex. "For Chad!"

The crowd cheered.

Alex raised his hand slightly. "Two hundred thousand and one dollar."

His quiet words were like a thunderclap in the ensuing silence.

Brittany's face went from red to purple.

"He's mocking me!" she cried to the guests. "He's deliberately trying to humiliate me!"

Chad put a comforting arm around her. "Don't worry, B. He can't keep this up. He's got nothing."

Alex's internal resolve hardened. He had given her chances. So many chances.

Tonight, something had to break.
