The Unlucky Twin's Unseen Path

Author: : Dolorita Drinker
Genre: Romance
From the moment I was born, a tiny, almost invisible birthmark behind my left ear sealed my fate. My mother, living by old superstitions, saw it as a bad omen, setting me apart from my identical twin, Sophia. She became the family favorite, showered with love and opportunity, while I became the "unlucky" one, living in her shadow with a nanny on a forgotten corner of our estate. Then, the unimaginable happened: Liam Davis, the adopted son of a powerful political figure, was at our family dinner, when he was never supposed to be there. And Sophia, my identical twin, who was supposed to marry the tech CEO Ethan Vance, shocked everyone by declaring her choice: she would marry Liam Davis. Sophia, with a smug, triumphant smile, later cornered me, "I told you I wanted your life. This time, I'm taking the right path from the beginning. Liam's power, his influence... it will all be mine. You can have the bankrupt tech genius." Her words chillingly confirmed it: she remembered everything from our first life, just like me. In that past life, I was married off to Liam Davis, a cold, distant man whose political ambition was built on secrets and ruthless tactics. His rise to power was bloody, leaving me a shield against his enemies and enduring constant humiliation in the shadows. Sophia had seen only the glamorous result, not the treacherous path, blindly envying my hard-won position. She thought marrying Liam was her shortcut to the life she deserved. Now, she believed she was seizing a better future, unaware that she was stepping into the very hell I had endured. She had chosen Liam, but she hadn't chosen the man he became with me. And I, the "unlucky" twin, was left with Ethan Vance, the supposed "bankrupt tech genius" destined for ruin. But I refused to be a passive victim again. This time, I knew the game, and I understood Sophia' s blindness. She wanted my old life? She could have it. Because this time, I would choose my own path. And maybe, just maybe, this "failed" marriage might hold a secret I never anticipated.

Chapter 1

Olivia and Sophia Reynolds were identical twins, but their lives were anything but the same. From the moment they were born, a tiny, almost invisible birthmark behind Olivia' s left ear sealed her fate. Their mother, a woman who lived by old superstitions, saw it as a bad omen.

Sophia became the star of the family, showered with love and every possible advantage. Olivia was the unlucky one, a shadow her parents preferred to ignore. She was sent to live with a nanny in a small, forgotten corner of the family estate, growing up in the shadow of the sister who had her face.

Years passed. Sophia was the darling of high society, known for her charm and beauty. Olivia was quiet, resilient, and mostly invisible.

Then, a major opportunity came to the Reynolds family. Ethan Vance, the celebrated CEO of a booming tech company, wanted to marry a Reynolds daughter. The proposal was meant for Olivia, a fact that was quickly and conveniently overlooked.

Sophia wanted the prestige, the wealth, the power that came with being Mrs. Ethan Vance. She saw it as her right. With their mother's help, she easily stepped into Olivia' s place. No one questioned it. The twins looked exactly alike, and no one cared enough about Olivia to notice the switch.

So Sophia married the tech CEO, her future glittering before her.

Olivia was pushed into a different marriage, a consolation prize. She was married off to Liam Davis, the adopted son of a powerful but shadowy political figure. His family had influence, but it was the kind that operated in the dark, without the glamour and public praise that Sophia craved.

Their paths diverged completely.

For a time, it seemed Sophia had won. She lived a life of luxury. But Ethan's company, built on a shaky foundation and poor management, eventually collapsed. A scandal erupted, and he was left bankrupt and disgraced. Bored and trapped in a failing marriage, Sophia had a reckless affair with one of their household employees. The story became a public sensation, and she was humiliated, her social standing destroyed. She lost everything.

Meanwhile, Olivia' s life took an unexpected turn. Liam Davis, the man she was forced to marry, proved to be brilliant, ambitious, and fiercely loyal to her. He rose through the political ranks, becoming one of the most influential lobbyists in the country. With his success, Olivia gained a level of respect and social power she had never imagined. She was no longer the unlucky twin but a woman of significant standing, admired for her grace and strength.

In the end, as Olivia stood by her husband's side at a major political gala, she heard the news of Sophia's final ruin. Later, in the haze of a fatal illness that came for her too soon, she saw her twin one last time.

Sophia stood over her, her face a mask of bitter envy. Her own life was in ashes, while Olivia, the "unlucky" one, had everything she had ever wanted.

"In a next life," Sophia whispered, her voice filled with a desperate hunger, "I want your life, Olivia. I want everything you have."

Olivia, feeling her last breath leave her body, managed a faint, tired smile.

"Go right ahead," she thought. "Take it."

And then, darkness.

Until she opened her eyes again, not to the sterile white of a hospital room, but to the familiar floral wallpaper of her childhood bedroom. The air was thick with the scent of her mother's expensive perfume.

She was young again. The calendar on her wall confirmed it. It was the week before Ethan Vance' s proposal.

A cold dread washed over her. It wasn't a dream. This was a second chance.

And across the hall, she could hear her sister, Sophia, humming a cheerful tune. It was a chilling sound. Sophia was here too. And Olivia knew with absolute certainty that her sister remembered everything.

The first confrontation of their new life was about to begin. Sophia had declared she wanted Olivia' s life, and now she had the chance to take it. But Olivia had a choice this time. She wouldn't be a passive victim again.

Chapter 2

The Reynolds family mansion felt like a stage set for a play Olivia had already seen. The air was thick with anticipation. Her mother, Mrs. Reynolds, fluttered around the house, her voice sharp and excited as she directed the staff. Every cushion was fluffed, every surface polished to a high shine.

"Sophia, darling, come here! Let me see that dress one more time," her mother called out.

Sophia emerged from her room, looking radiant in a pale blue dress that highlighted her eyes. She smiled, a perfect, practiced smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.

Olivia watched from the top of the stairs, a silent observer in her own home. She knew what this was all about. This was the day the Vance family was coming to formally discuss a marriage proposal. In her first life, they had come for her, but Sophia had intercepted the opportunity.

"Isn't she lovely?" Mrs. Reynolds said to her husband, who was reading the newspaper in the living room, barely looking up. "Ethan Vance won't be able to take his eyes off her."

The doorbell rang, and the performance began.

Mrs. Reynolds rushed to the door, her face arranged in a welcoming smile. Mr. Vance and his wife entered, followed by their son, Ethan. Ethan was just as Olivia remembered him: handsome, confident, with the easy arrogance of a man who was used to getting what he wanted.

But they weren't alone.

Walking slightly behind them was another young man. He was tall and lean, dressed in a simple, dark suit that seemed to absorb the light around him. His features were sharp, his expression unreadable.

It was Liam Davis.

Olivia' s heart stopped for a second. She hadn't expected him to be here. In her first life, he hadn' t been part of this initial meeting. His family and the Vances moved in different circles.

Her mother' s smile faltered for a moment as she saw Liam. "And you are?" she asked, her tone a little cooler.

"Liam Davis," he said, his voice low and steady. "My father has business with Mr. Vance."

It was a plausible explanation, but Olivia felt a sense of unease. Something was different this time.

They all sat in the formal living room. The conversation was light, focused on Ethan' s recent successes and Sophia' s beauty. Olivia was brought out and introduced briefly, a mere formality, before being expected to fade into the background.

"Our families have known each other for years," Mr. Vance said, getting to the point. "And we would be honored to join them through the marriage of our son, Ethan, and your daughter." He looked pointedly at Sophia.

Mrs. Reynolds beamed. "We would be delighted. Sophia has always admired Ethan."

Sophia smiled sweetly. "I'm very flattered, Mr. Vance."

Everything was proceeding just as it had before, except for Liam' s silent presence. He sat in his chair, watching the scene unfold with an unnerving stillness. His eyes met Olivia' s for a brief moment, and she felt a strange jolt, a flicker of something she couldn't name.

Then, Sophia did something that shattered the script.

She stood up. "Mr. Vance, I am truly honored by your offer," she said, her voice clear and strong. "But I'm afraid I must decline."

The room fell silent. Mrs. Reynolds' s face went pale with shock.

"What are you talking about, Sophia?" her mother hissed.

Sophia ignored her. She turned her gaze from a stunned Ethan Vance and looked directly at Liam Davis.

"I have already made my choice," Sophia announced, a triumphant glint in her eyes. "I wish to marry Mr. Liam Davis."

The shock in the room was absolute. Mr. and Mrs. Vance looked offended. Ethan looked utterly bewildered. But no one was more shocked than Mrs. Reynolds.

"Are you insane?" she screeched, forgetting all pretense of politeness. "The Davis family? He's just an adopted son! What could he possibly offer you?"

"He can offer me what I want," Sophia said, her voice filled with a certainty that chilled Olivia to the bone. She was looking at Liam, but Olivia knew her words were a message. Sophia knew Liam' s future. She knew he would become more powerful than Ethan could ever dream of. She was choosing the winning ticket from the start this time.

Liam himself looked surprised, but he recovered quickly. A slow, calculating smile spread across his face. He stood up and nodded slightly. "I accept."

"This is madness! I forbid it!" Mrs. Reynolds shouted.

But Sophia was relentless. "Mother, this is my decision. I am choosing Mr. Davis." She held her ground, her ambition a tangible force in the room. Her parents, who had always indulged her every whim, were powerless against this new, determined version of their favorite daughter.

Eventually, faced with Sophia' s unyielding stance and the awkwardness of the Vances' presence, her father sighed and gave in. "Fine. If this is what you want."

Later, after the Vances and Liam had left, the house was in turmoil. But Sophia was calm. She found Olivia alone in the hallway.

She walked up to her, a smug, victorious smile on her face.

"Surprised, sister?" Sophia sneered. "I told you I wanted your life. This time, I'm taking the right path from the beginning. Liam's power, his influence... it will all be mine."

She leaned in closer, her voice a low whisper. "You can have the bankrupt tech genius. Have fun with that."

And in that moment, looking into her sister's gloating eyes, Olivia understood completely.

It wasn't just a premonition. It wasn't a coincidence.

Sophia remembered everything. She was reborn, just like her.
