Chapter 1 The Discovery

Chapter One: The Discovery

The sound of the door shutting behind me was muffled by the racing of my heart. My chest felt constricted, my breathing still uneven from the conversation with Vanessa just a few minutes earlier. We had been talking about my future plans-Valentine's Day, the getaway to the Maldives, the perfect proposal Alex had promised me. The perfect life we were supposed to have.

But when I walked through the door of our shared apartment, all of it came crashing down in an instant.

The apartment was so quiet it was nearly unnervingly still, normally filled with the hum of life. My heels clicked softly against the hardwood floor as I stepped further inside. It was too quiet-something wasn't right. I expected to hear the faint sound of Alex's voice from the kitchen or see him at the counter with his usual cup of coffee. But as I walked into the living room, my stomach dropped.

There, on the couch, was Alex-my boyfriend of three years-wrapped around his assistant, Elena. Their lips were locked in an intimate kiss, their bodies pressed so tightly together it was impossible to deny the depth of their connection. My world stopped, and everything around me seemed to blur as I stood frozen in the doorway, unable to move, unable to breathe.

First, the shock hit me like a cold, numbing wave that stole the air from my lungs. It was so unreal, like some kind of nightmare I couldn't wake up from. My mind refused to wrap itself around the reality of what I was seeing. My gaze flickered between them, the raw intimacy in their embrace shredding everything I thought I knew about my relationship with Alex.

How long? How long had it been? The question bounced inside my mind, though the answer was right in front of me. My heart twisted, painfully, at a sharp, raw ache that burned inside; beneath my feet, the floor spun away.

Alex stepped back from Elena, his eyes wide with surprise and something akin to guilt-but there was no escaping the truth now. He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came. He looked like a man caught, like someone who knew he had no defense.

How long?" I managed to ask, my voice thick with emotion, but even as the question left my lips, I could already feel the answer in every inch of my being. I knew. The doubt, the gut-wrenching certainty that had been gnawing at me for weeks-it was all coming together in this single moment.

His face fell, his lips parted; there was nothing left to say that would make a difference. It was the truth, and nothing would alter the fact that I just caught him red-handed in the act of betraying me.

Elizabeth, I... I didn't mean for this to happen," Alex stuttered, his voice shaking as he reached for me. His hand hovered in the air, as if he was uncertain whether I'd even let him touch me again. The pity in his voice made it all so much worse-it was a thin, empty excuse that only deepened the sense of betrayal.

I shook my head violently, my heart breaking at every passing second. "You didn't mean for this to happen?" I mocked, my voice trembling with disbelief and anger. "How long has this been going on, Alex? How long have you been lying to me?"

I couldn't look at him anymore. He had been the man I had placed all my trust in, the man I had shared my life with, and now he was no better than a stranger. The sight of him was unbearable to me, the sight of him with her. Without another word, I turned away, my chest aching with every step as I rushed out the door. It was like the cold outside had given a slap on my face, yet that was no comparison to the chill which had gone inside, sitting in my heart.

It was as if the night swallowed me in. My steps were unsteady, my legs hardly able to carry me through the weight of the pain that consumed me. I didn't know where I was going, but I couldn't stay there, couldn't stay where I had once felt safe.

I needed space. I needed air. I needed to breathe.

But no matter how much I walked, the images of Alex and Elena pressed against each other, their kisses imprinting on my brain. The world was out of control, my senses working hard to process what just happened.

"Are you alright?

The voice cut through the fog in my brain, deep and even, and I looked up. A man stood across the street, watching me. Tall, with severe features, his eyes were studious, their intensity muted, but studying nonetheless. He was a stranger, somebody that I had never met, but there was something. The way he stared into my face-a jolting ache gripped my chest for the very first time.

His eyes relaxed, and he looked at me as if something had dawned on him about me that no one else saw. He crossed the street to me with measured, deliberate steps.

"I... I'm fine," I lied in a whisper. Even to my ears, the words sounded weak and hollow.

He didn't buy it. His gaze finally latched onto mine, unreadable, but there was a concern there I could see-the weight of it bearing down on me.

He finally looked down at my hand to where the engagement ring was now an albatross around my neck. The cold metal reminded me of everything that I'd lost-everything I thought I had.

I couldn't take it anymore. The hurt, the anger, the confusion-it all built up inside me until I couldn't contain it.

Without thinking, without considering the consequences, the words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them.

"Marry me"

Simeon's eyes went wide with surprise, but there was no judgment in his gaze-just something like amusement, tempered with a hint of curiosity. He didn't pull away, though. He just stood there, studying me as if weighing his options.

"Are you sure?" he asked, his voice low and steady.

I was too exhausted to care about anything else anymore. "I need to forget," I whispered, my voice cracking as the tears that had been held back earlier in the day began to spill over.

Simeon didn't bat an eyelid. His fingers wrapped around mine; his brushed mine for a brief moment, sending a surge of warmth through me. Then, without a second thought, he pushed my engagement ring onto his finger, his touch long enough to leave its smudge on my soul.

And that one moment, so stupidly careless, I did make a choice. The choice to run away from it, the choice to prove to myself that all was over.

And, just like that, life had changed. Again.

Chapter 2 Proposal

Chapter Two: The Proposal

Simeon leaned back in his chair, tapping a pen idly on his desk, a small, amused smile playing on his lips as he replayed the events of earlier that day. It was hard to believe it had actually happened. He had been the recipient of a proposal-but not just any proposal. A proposal from a complete stranger.

He couldn't help but have a chuckle to himself as he picked up the card Elizabeth had handed him. It had been ages since he'd had one of these days.

Karin, his longtime secretary, tapped lightly upon his office door and made her way inside, a fresh cup of coffee balanced upon the tray in her hands. Her eyes always seemed to be on alert for when her boss required a break, and this was beginning to seem just about one of those days.

Coffee, sir?" Karin asked, setting the mug on his desk as her warm smile fell on the glint of amusement dancing in his eyes. Long enough had she been around Simeon that it needed no spelling when something struck a particular note with him.

Simeon looked toward her, still with an amused look on his face. He reached for his coffee, playing with the liquid in his cup while leaning back in his chair with an air of relishing something in his mind. "You won't believe what happened today," he said, leaning forward, his voice so full of intrigue.

Karin raised an eyebrow, setting her purse down on the side table. "Oh? Do I need to brace myself for something strange?" She had seen her fair share of odd happenings around Simeon's life.

Simeon let out a small laugh, shaking his head in disbelief. "I didn't expect it myself. A woman-an unknown woman-proposed to me today."

Karin's eyes went wide. "What? You? Married? To a stranger? Simeon, are you serious?"

Simeon leaned back into the backrest of his chair, still amused. "Dead serious. I was just about my own business down on the street when, out of a corner somewhere, this woman came up and asked me, looking at me in that face, to marry.

Karin couldn't help but burst out laughing. "She proposed to you? Just like that?"

"Just like that," Simeon confirmed, his lips curling into a wry smile. "Of course, I tried to back away, but she wouldn't hear of it. She was in a. state, let's say. In fact, she practically shoved her engagement ring onto my finger.

Karin laughed loudly as she shook her head. "That's insane! I mean, who does that? You must've thought it was some kind of joke.

"I thought so, at first," Simeon replied, still smiling. "But there was just something about her. She wasn't laughing. She wasn't joking. Desperate, but in the way that you would think: This woman is either out of her mind, or there is more to this than meets the eye of a spur-of-the-moment type of decision.

"Alright," Karin said, wiping tears of laughter from her eyes. "So, what happened next? You didn't just go along with it, did you?"

"No, of course not," Simeon said, shaking his head. "I told her it was crazy, that I wasn't some kind of rebound. But... she was insistent. In fact, she was downright convincing. I couldn't help but admire her courage, even if it was totally misplaced." He paused, his fingers absently tracing the edge of the desk. "I don't know, Karin... there was something about her. Something I couldn't quite put my finger on."

Karin raised an eyebrow. "Hmm. Sounds like you're kind of intrigued. You going to track her down? Make sure this isn't some kind of elaborate prank?

Simeon looked up at her, his expression abruptly serious. "I don't know if it's some kind of prank, but I want to hear more about her. She had guts, Karin. And something more-something below the surface. There's just no way in hell someone does something like this for nothing. I need to know why she did this and who she is, really.

Karin's teasing smile faltered a little at the change in Simeon's demeanor. "You're really serious about this, aren't you?"

"I don't waste my time on things that don't interest me," Simeon said, matter-of-fact. "This woman-she's different. I want to understand what's behind that impulsive decision. I'm not going to let this go.

Karin nodded, suddenly feeling this wasn't a whim with Simeon on its way out. "Okay, then. What would you have me do?

Simeon reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the business card Elizabeth had given him. "I want you to get me everything you can about her. Use this." He handed her the card, which read Elizabeth Hastings, Marketing Director, Hastings and Co. "Find out where she works, her family background-anything you can dig up. And make sure it's thorough. I need to know everything."

Karin took the card, examining it closely before slipping it into her bag. "I'll get right on it. You're right, there's something strange about this. But you're really going to contact her, right? This isn't just... curiosity?"

Simeon's eyes locked with hers. "I told you. I want to know her. Not just because of this insane proposal, but because there's something about her-something I haven't figured out yet. I want to know what drives her, what makes her tick. I want to know if there's more to her than just this spontaneous act.

Karin smiled knowingly. "Alright, I'll track her down. And don't worry, I won't let you down. You're going to get more than you bargained for, Simeon."

"Good," Simeon said, his voice steady, his gaze unwavering. "I'll be waiting for your report."

Later That Day

Karin's phone rang just as she was leaving the office. It was a call she had been waiting for-the results of her search.

She answered on the first ring, her voice ringing with anticipation. "Karin speaking."

"Simeon," the voice at the other end said, deadpan. "I've got all that you wanted on Elizabeth Hastings."

"That quickly?" Karin asked, raising an eyebrow. "You don't waste any time, do you?"

"Well, when you know where to look, really, it doesn't take very long," the voice at the other end said. "An impressive résumé she has-head of marketing for a well-known company, good education, well-placed. But that is not all there is to her. She's had a pretty bad time lately-her relationship ended on a pretty bad note, and it seems like she's been trying to get back on her feet. There's this feeling of, I don't know, emotional chaos around her. It's not like a random proposal, I think; there's more at play here.

Karin listened, nodding. "I see. Well, I've got enough now. Time to put things into motion. I'll contact her soon, just as you asked."

"Good. Keep me posted," Simeon said, hanging up.

Chapter 3 Unexpected Encounter

Chapter Three: The Unexpected Encounter

Elizabeth sat on the edge of her bed, the events of the day replaying in her mind. The audacity of her actions-the proposal to a complete stranger-seemed surreal. She had acted on impulse, driven by a mix of desperation and a desire to escape the suffocating grip of her past. Now, as she sat alone in her room, the weight of her decision began to settle in.

Her phone buzzed, breaking the silence. She glanced at the screen: an unknown number. Hesitant, she answered.

"Hello?" she said, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

"Good evening, is this Miss Elizabeth Hastings?" a woman's voice inquired.

"Yes, speaking," Elizabeth replied, her curiosity piqued.

"This is Karin, Mr. Simeon Blackwood's personal assistant. He would like to meet with you at your earliest convenience," the voice continued.

Elizabeth's heart skipped a beat. Simeon Blackwood? The name was unfamiliar, and she couldn't recall any prior interactions. "I'm sorry, but I don't believe we've met," she said, confusion evident in her tone.

Karin chuckled softly. "Ah, I see. Mr. Blackwood is the gentleman you proposed to earlier today. He was quite taken aback by your boldness and would like to discuss the matter further."

Elizabeth's mind raced. The man she had impulsively proposed to was someone of significance? She had no idea. "I... I didn't realize," she stammered. "When would he like to meet?"

"He's available tomorrow at 10 AM. Will that work for you?" Karin asked.

"Yes, that should be fine," Elizabeth agreed, still processing the revelation.

"Excellent. I'll send you the details shortly. We look forward to your visit," Karin concluded before hanging up.

Elizabeth sat back, her thoughts swirling. She had no idea who this man was, but the fact that he was interested in meeting her piqued her curiosity. She glanced at the clock-it was already late. She needed rest. Tomorrow promised to be an eventful day.

The next morning, Elizabeth stood before the towering glass building, its sleek design reflecting the morning sun. The address on the invitation matched the one on the building's plaque: Blackwood Enterprises. She had heard of the company but knew little about it. Taking a deep breath, she entered the lobby.

A receptionist greeted her with a warm smile. "Good morning. How may I assist you?"

"I'm here to see Mr. Simeon Blackwood," Elizabeth replied, handing over the invitation.

The receptionist's eyes widened slightly, but she quickly masked her surprise. "Of course, Miss Hastings. Please have a seat. Mr. Blackwood is expecting you."

Elizabeth sat in the plush waiting area, her nerves on edge. She had no idea what to expect. After what felt like an eternity, a door opened, and a tall, impeccably dressed man stepped out. His presence was commanding, and his sharp features exuded confidence. He approached Elizabeth with a measured pace.

"Miss Hastings?" he inquired, his voice smooth and authoritative.

"Yes," Elizabeth replied, standing to greet him.

"I'm Simeon Blackwood," he introduced himself, extending a hand.

Elizabeth shook his hand, noting the firmness of his grip. "It's a pleasure to meet you," she said, though she felt anything but at ease.

"Shall we?" Simeon gestured toward the door he had just exited.

They entered a spacious office adorned with modern art and floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the city. Elizabeth took a seat across from his sleek, minimalist desk.

Simeon sat down, his gaze fixed on her. "I must admit, your proposal was unexpected," he began, his tone both amused and intrigued. "Most people don't approach me with such... directness."

Elizabeth felt a flush creep up her neck. "I apologize if I overstepped," she said, her voice tinged with embarrassment. "It was a spur-of-the-moment decision."

Simeon leaned back in his chair, studying her intently. "I find that intriguing," he remarked. "Not many have the courage to act on impulse, especially in such a manner."

Before Elizabeth could respond, the door opened, and a man entered, holding a stack of papers. He paused upon seeing Elizabeth and then turned to Simeon.

"Boss, these are the reports you requested," the man said, his tone respectful.

Elizabeth's breath caught in her throat. Boss? The word echoed in her mind, sending a jolt of recognition through her. She knew that voice. She knew that man.

Alex.

Her ex-boyfriend.

The man who had once been her confidant, her lover, the one she had trusted with her heart. The man who had shattered her trust and left her broken. Seeing him here, in this context, was like a slap to the face. He was working for Simeon. He was addressing him as "Boss." The betrayal stung anew, and a wave of nausea washed over her.

Alex's eyes met hers, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. His face paled, and his hand trembled slightly as he placed the reports on Simeon's desk. He opened his mouth as if to speak but closed it again, unable to find the words.

Simeon's demeanor shifted slightly. "Thank you, Alex," he replied, his voice cool. "Please leave them on my desk."

Alex nodded and placed the papers down before exiting the room.

Elizabeth's mind raced. Alex working for Simeon? The implications were staggering. She had no idea what to make of it.

Simeon noticed her reaction. "Is something wrong?" he asked, his brow furrowing slightly.

Elizabeth hesitated, then decided to be honest. "I know Alex," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We... we used to be involved."

Simeon's expression remained neutral. "I see," he said simply.

The room fell into an awkward silence. Elizabeth's thoughts were a whirlwind. Alex working for Simeon? The man she had once loved, now serving as an underling to the very person she had proposed to. The irony was almost too much to bear.

Simeon broke the silence. "Perhaps we should focus on the matter at hand," he suggested. "Your proposal. What prompted such an action?"

Elizabeth took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. "It was a moment of desperation," she confessed. "I was hurt, and I acted without thinking."

Simeon nodded thoughtfully. "I understand," he said. "But I must ask, what do you hope to achieve with this proposal?"

Elizabeth met his gaze, her resolve strengthening. "I don't know," she admitted. "Maybe a fresh start. Maybe a way to move on from the past."

Simeon studied her for a moment, then leaned forward slightly. "I appreciate your honesty," he said. "And I believe we can help each other. But first, I need to understand you better. Your motivations, your goals. Only then can we determine if this... arrangement is feasible."

Elizabeth nodded, feeling a mix of apprehension and hope. This was unexpected, but perhaps it was the opportunity she needed to rebuild her life.

As the meeting continued, Elizabeth found herself opening up more than she had anticipated. Simeon's demeanor was professional yet empathetic,
