A valedictorian is the student with the highest rank of the entire graduating class.

The honor is traditionally based on grade point average and credits taken.

A person with the highest grades in all the subjects is considered as a Valedictorian.

It was the day of graduation and am just excited as everyone here. After years of schooling, am finally completing.

Rhoda and I said silent prayers and smiled hopefully at each other.

I and my friend, Rhoda, has always wished for that title and we've always worked hard for it.

Though am glad to be a First Class student, my family will be much happier if my name should be mentioned.

Am Leona Grande, the second child and the only daughter my mom gave birth to before passing on. My dad got remarried to Tasha and they had three children, all girls.

So in all, we are a family of seven. Four girls and one boy.

I'm from a lower class family, not rich at all.

My dad is a fashion designer but his business was not doing all too well since all the money was invested into my education.

Having a jobless step mum made it worse because the burden was on dad alone.

The other three girls dropped out of elementary school while my eldest brother, Raymond, only completed highschool.

So you can imagine, I was an investment to my family since all the earnings went into my education. My family is being forced to live a moderate and simple lifestyle all because of my education.

For that, I'll always be indebted to all members.

I'm not the normal teenage girl who chats and gossips about boys all the time.

My life was totally different: that is, mentally, psychologically, physically and emotionally.

My red platinum hair was overgrown because I had no time to trim it at the salon and it was almost below my butt anytime I lose it. Other than that, it was always wrapped on my head.

I was under the "no boyfriend" policy and my dad always make sure that I wasn't seen around any of them, even though I was 19 years.

I had no time to apply makeups or wear beautiful clothes. I was always cladded in faded denim trousers with faded hoodies.

Well, let's say all the few clothes I had were all faded because of excessive use.

Being a future breadwinner or should I say, caretaker or heir, which ever way, it wasn't an easy task.

I was always the serious type, always locked up indoors with my books. All I do is read, read and read.

I was a First Class nerd, only that I don't make use of those ugly spectacles.

I only come out to eat and go back.

Throughout my highschool I had no friend.

I always walk alone despite that, my grades kept me popular since I was always awarded the best student.

It was in college that I met Rhoda. She was from an extremely wealthy family and I don't know why she would befriend a church mouse like me.

Anyways, I'm still glad she's my friend and I like her a lot.

After graduation, I have to look for a good work with a handsome pay so that I can take over responsibility and repay my dad, send my half sisters back to school and also help my brother to college.

It wouldn't have been me if my brother had done well in highschool. Am glad that he always supports me in anyway he could.

My step mom, Tasha, was quite a headache and her three girls are also something else, especially the eldest who's called Elsie.

I don't blame either of them.

All the same, I'm glad my half sisters made it to my graduation.

My dad and Tasha couldn't come because they prefer watching it on the TV.

I looked around and admired the beautiful academic gowns we were wearing.

I can't wait to throw my cap out into the air...

"And the Valedictorian goes to none other than our very own, Miss Leona Grande."

The MC's voice brought me back from the thinking I was doing.

The whole graduands cheered and chanted my name wildly.

I couldn't believe it. I looked over at Rhoda and she smiled and nodded.

My eyes darted to the gold medal and I just teared up.

Oh Lord! I made it!

The cheering was so loud that I can imagine my father doing a victory dance back home.

With this award, I don't need to go searching for work because the government is gonna employ me instantly.

I jumped up happily and muttered a 'YES'!

"Kindly come forward Miss Grande" the MC said.

I began walking to the stage but as I walked, I suddenly felt dizzy.

I tried to keep my eyes open to walk but it was difficult but I somehow managed to the stage.

Upon getting there, I didn't know what happened and everything suddenly went blank.

The gasps of my lectures and my colleagues were the last thing I heard.

RHODA

Once Leona fell unexpectedly on the stage, the MC called for the first aid team and she was rushed to the school's hospital.

"I guess our new Valedictorian is too happy and must've passed out due to the excess happiness. Until she's awake, the ceremony will not continue" the proprietor announced.

That's how important Leona is. She's just too brilliant and everything about her is so so perfect. She's calm, respectful and humble. She doesn't talk much like I always do but only talks when it's necessary. When I befriended her at first I thought she was boring because she always decline my invitation to parties, shoppings and sleep overs.

I didn't like how she looked and I always want to make her look nice as me but she always decline my gifts.

Even without being in beautiful clothes, I know that she was a beauty.

Once her hoodie slipped off by mistake and I awed at the amount of hair on her head. My eyes darted to her skin and I saw how hairy they were.

I wondered how she'll get a boyfriend with those shabby clothes and I was propelled to ask if she had a boyfriend and she only smiled.

That was the first time she smiled to me and it was the best smile I've ever seen in ages. I began to like her more and always try to make some jokes up so she could smile so that I could see her beautiful dimples and white tooth.

Having her as my friend changed me a lot. I was the party girl type with dull brain but once I met her, she advised me to stop partying and focus on my books.

It wasn't easy but she helped me overcome it. Then she began teaching me some of the courses I was failing at. With time, I began to master all the difficulties I once find in Economics. My grades improved drastically.

We became so close that, in terms of academics, I always come second and she always take the first position. My past friends who mocked me when I befriended her at first started feeling jealous and wished they were in my position.

I walked from where I stood and got in to my Audi, I drove to the hospital. I walked in to the ward and saw her sisters beside her but she was still not awake.

The eldest who was between 16 and seventeen had an angry look on while the 13 and the 10 years were both crying.

I was confused. I wonder what was wrong.

I thought they were just worried so I went to the canteen to get them some water to calm them down. While returning, I saw the proprietor with Leona's parents.

What could be the problem?

I walked back to the ward and gave them the bottled water.

"What's wrong? Is anything the matter?" I asked no one in particular.

"She's pregnant!" The eldest muttered.

"Are you kidding me? How can she be pregnant? You must be joking right?" I asked.

"We can't believe it either, but you can check the results since I don't understand what's in there but that was what the doctor told the proprietor."

I chuckled and took the results. There's no way Leona will be pregnant. That girl hardly talk to boys.

I opened the test results and went through.

I dropped it suddenly as if it was something contagious.

This can't be! It's a lie. Leo can't be pregnant. She's so busy working towards her goals to be pregnant.

I ran out and called one of the nurses. I made her take her blood again which was sent to the lab.

After some minutes, she arrived with the result. I took it hastily and went through.

My shoulders slackened in disappointment as the paper flew from my hands.

That explains it. So this is the reason why her parents were summoned?

I went back to her ward but her siblings were gone.

I sat beside her not knowing what to do next as tears spilled on my cheeks.

"Why are you crying Rhoda?"

I heard her calm voice and raised my head.

"Are you alright?" I asked.

"Yes I am. Why do you ask? "

"Am glad you're okay. I was just worried."

"Was that why you were crying?"

"I guess."

She smiled. "Why am I here Rhoda? I was supposed to be giving my speech right?"

"Yeah but you suddenly passed out because..."

"Because you got pregnant."

Someone said from the door.

I looked at the door and saw her stepmom walk in and without hesitating, or giving her time to process what she just said, she slapped her on both cheeks so hard that her hand marked on her cheeks.

"How dare you do this to us, you disgraceful and unfaithful daughter of a bitch! " She shouted.

Leona looked at me then to her stepmom with a confused and clueless face.

She got up from the bed and straightened her dress.

"What's wrong mum..."

"Don't ever call me mum because you were never my daughter and you'll never be. I'll be considered a bad luck if I were to give birth to you."

That was harsh.

"What's wrong Rhoda?" She turned to me with quivering lips.

I could see how she was breathing so fast which means that her heart was pounding.

"I..I .." I tried to say but the proprietor entered.

"The two of you are needed outside." He said and went back. Her stepmom also followed after giving out a loud hiss and looking at her in contempt.

"Tell me something Rhoda. Is what she said true? Am I really pregnant?"

"Have you had any sex?"

"What! No! "

"Then why are you pregnant? The test is showing that you're two weeks gone."

"What?" She exclaimed again.

"Tell me the truth Leo. What really happened? Did you get a boyfriend and forgot to tell me?"

"Stop this Rhoda! I never had a boyfriend and I never had sex. Infact am a VIRGIN!" She screamed and her eyes began to water.

~RHODA~

"Stop this Rhoda! I never had a boyfriend and I never had sex. Infact am a VIRGIN!" She screamed and her eyes began to water.

"Then how's this possible! I wouldn't have believed if I hadn't done the test myself."

"Trust me Rhoda, I never had sex! I didn't do anything."

"I trust you completely Leo. Infact, more than my own self but you know that one can never get pregnant without having sex. I mean is not like Jesus is visiting the world again through you! That thing happened long ago, besides the saviour is not coming to this earth..."

"Shut up already! You're only making this worse. I'm sure there's a mix up somewhere other than that, how can I be pregnant?."

"Alright but I think we should do a virginity test to prove that you still are."

"Does that mean you don't believe what am saying?"

"Not that, but it will be something that's gonna prove that you are indeed telling the truth."

"That is ridiculous Rhoda! Do you know how that thing is done?" She asked.

I've only heard that virginity test is usually done but I don't really have an Idea how it is conducted.

"How's it done?"

She sighed and bit into her lower lip. "The doctor have to insert his finger in my vagina to check its laxity and am not ready for that. I believe myself and i know who I am. I no that I've done no such thing and that is why am not going to take any test. Let them believe whatever they want but I know that am not pregnant."

She walked out and I just follow her.

"Fine! When was the last time you had your period or when is it due.?"

She stopped. "It will be due tomorrow. Am expecting it tomorrow."

"Okay, let's wait and see then."

"Yeah."

We got back to the gathering and the program continued.

She was called for the medal 🏅 but she wasn't as happy as it would've been.

"This year is a wonderful one because both our Valedictorian and Salutatorian are girls. Today, a fifty years record was broken! It has always been boys but it has changed, Ladies and gentlemen, the Salutatorian also goes to Miss Rhoda Grant!"

Goodness gracious Lord! This is a dream come true!

"It has been proven yet again that indeed birds of the same feathers do flock together. They were best friends who couldn't stop making this institution proud."

My parents rushed to hug me before I got to the stage for my medal which was silver.

After the speeches and others, the the day came to an end with all the graduates throwing their caps in the air.

It was such a sight!

"Congratulations Rhoda!" Leona bubbled.

"Congratulations to you too." I hugged her.

"Shall we go home?" I asked.

"Sure, I can't wait to tell Dad about the good news."

"Alright let's go then." I said and took her hand.

We were about to walk when my mum's car suddenly drove in front of us.

He stopped and got out.

"Hi mum, meet my friend Leo..."

"I already know her dear. Is she not the one who fainted and was later discovered to be pregnant?"

"How did you know that mum?"

"How I got to know is not important. What is important is that, I don't want you around her anymore. She's a bad influence." She snatched my hand from Leona's.

"Let me explain mum..."

"No you won't. She's immoral and shameless."

"How can you say such things mum." I looked at Leona and her face was down.

"Is not what you think ma'am but if you still think am a bad influence then I'll stay away from Rhoda."

"That will be better. Now get into the car Rhoda."

"No I won't." I refused with eyes on Leona. She was almost crying before she turned her back to us and began walking away.

I started walking towards her when mum pulled me back and ordered one of our body guards to carry me.

"What are you doing mum? Let him get me down." I hit the back of the man.

I looked back and I saw Leona with the proprietor.

~LEONA~

When I turned to leave, the proprietor suddenly met me and handed a letter to me before leaving.

I looked back but Rhoda was already gone.

I looked at the envelope that was given to me and wondered what could be in there.

I took a taxi back home, decided to open the envelope once I arrive.

After some few minutes, I arrived home and walked to our door. I was about to open when my foot hit something on the doorway.

I looked down and there was my small luggage. What will my luggage be doing here and who placed it here?

I took it and opened the door about to get in when I was stopped by Elsie.

"Hi Elsie." I greeted.

"Don't hi me!" She said and folded her hands on her chest.

"What's wrong? Is everything okay?"

"How can everything be okay when you had gone and ruined this family."

"What do you mean?"

"Stop pretending to know nothing about what is happening Leona." Valerie said and came to stand beside Elsie with hands crossed on her chest.

"She acts as if she was innocent and the holiest of holiest but it was all a sham. Your game is over Leona and now mum and dad wants you outta this house." Elsie said angrily.

"Hey, what's wrong with both of you? And who said am pregnant? Where's dad? I'll like to talk to him." I demanded.

"You can't talk to him." Vera, the last born said quietly.

I went to her and tried to touch her but she moved back. "Why can't I talk to him, Vee?"

"He's been hospitalized all because you sister Leona."

"What? What happened to him?"

"You're the one who happened to him. The worst mistake he ever made so far."

"Listen to me all of you. I don't know what you must've heard but I know that whatever you heard about me is a lie and am sure dad will understand and make you guys understand as well. Now tell me where he has been admitted."

"Kings Hospital." Vee said and shrugged.

"How will we get back to school now that there's a baby in your tummy? Mummy said we can't go to school anymore sister Leo." Vee asked when I was about to go and began to tear up.

"You'll all got to school, I promise." My voice came out as a whisper but sure they heard it.

I dropped my luggage and took a taxi to the supposed hospital.

When I got to the hospital, I was directed to his ward by one of the nurses after making enquiries.

I got to it about to knock and enter when someone pulled me roughly by the wrist out of the hospital to outside.

"What are you doing, mum?"

"Can't you see? Am shushing the source of our bad luck out of our lives."

"Let me go mum. I want to see my dad."

"You can't see him because he doesn't want you to. You ceased to be his daughter the day you went and had sex with a man and that's why he wants you outta his life for good. You've been nothing but a big disgrace, she said

"You're making all this up because I know dad will never say such things. He trust me completely"

"Not after you let him down and ruined all his plans and got him confined permanently in wheelchair by the shocking news he received. That man had so much faith in you but you overlooked it."

"What! My dad is paralyzed? But why?"

"Stop asking foolish questions and get out of our lives and never return."

"What of the promise I made to him to take care of this family? Look mum, I've completed and the government has made arrangements for me to be employed in one of the big companies and after that, we wouldn't have to worry about money because I be paid and that money will be used to take care of my siblings' education..."

"Who's going to take care of that bastard you're busy carrying until he's born and after? Which company is going employ a pregnant woman?"

"But mum..." I paused because I didn't know what to say. What if I am indeed pregnant? Whose going to take care of my family? They spent so much on me so that I can help reduce our financial problems.

"I've always known that this will happen and it has happened. You were never someone to be trusted and now it has cost us all dearly, especially the lives of my dear children. I hate you Leona and I always have. I only tolerated you because of your dad but not anymore. I want you out of this hospital, out of my husband's house and our lives, else you'll have me to deal with and I promise to make this miserable life of yours a leaving hell!"

My mouth hanged in the air loosely. Why would mum say all this to me?

I watched her leave but before turning to leave, I bumped into someone.

I looked up and saw Raymond. I hugged him tightly as if my life depended on it.

He hugged me back and rubbed his hands on my back.

I pulled back and raised my gaze. "I didn't do anything bro."

"I know Leo, you don't have to say anything."

"But why can't everyone understand me as well?"

Hmmmmmmm, perhaps the second miracle of a child without coagulation is about to be recorded in human history again. Who could be responsible for Leona's pregnancy?
