Prologue: When Modern Sleeping Beauty Finally Awakens
"Head Nurse!" A clumsy, young woman with blonde hair and cerulean eyes squeaked out, annoying the much older and experienced nurse in the hospital. The Head Nurse turned her attention to the young woman and rolled her eyes, bored despite the fact that it was barely the start of the day. "Yes, Ms. Rilianne White?"
"Why doesn't anyone monitor room 360?" Rilianne White innocently asked, pointing to an abandoned room at the end of hall. The Head Nurse sighed as she stared at the twenty-one-year-old intern. Apparently the foreign beauty didn't know what and who resided in that room.
"Ms. White, " The Head Nurse began, "I must inform you that room 360 is a hopeless case. Nobody, even the doctors, have any hope left for the patient inside of it. The only people that see her are the two old janitors that switch shifts every two weeks. Otherwise, no one knows how the girl is or how she looks like... despite being a hopeless case, her poor parents still insist for her to stay at the hospital to receive nutrients to keep her alive."
Rilanne White's blue eyes flashed with anger and disbelief, "That's illegal! How could nobody keep an eye on the patient!?"
The Head Nurse shook her head at the na?vety of the young woman in front of her, "She's been in a coma for approximately four years. One of our longest cases and definitely the case that doesn't exhibit any symptoms of recovery."
Rilianne White closed her eyes in defeat. Despite what the Head Nurse said, she had a feeling they were making a huge mistake. After all, shouldn't doctors and nurses do their very best for a patient's health? By the looks of it, they were tired of the person inside room 360 and wanted her out. Unfortunately for them, she, Rilianne White, was not going to permit them the chance.
"Head Nurse!" The Head Nurse raised her head from her magazine and immediately noticed the determination in the foreign woman's orbs. She crossed her arms and muttered, "Let me guess: you want to be in charge of room 360, right?"
Rilianne White nodded eagerly and the Head Nurse sarcastically mumbled, "Don't come crying to me when you lose your internship..."
And thus began Rilianne White taking care of the patient in room 360. The blonde woman first began by cleaning up the dust that the janitors hadn't bothered with and she then proceeded to give the patient a bath. Though it was a bit difficult as the patient-a woman that looked to be near her age except with a malnourished body-she, Rilianne White, had done it.
And now that she could get a clear look at the patient's face, she was mesmerized. Although the patient's cheeks were hollow and dark circles occupied around her eyes, the patient was easily the most stunning Chinese woman Rilianne White had seen while staying in China. Even the models she had seen on TV didn't compare as the woman had long, glossy black hair that paired with thick, yet unkempt eyebrows. Although the woman was really slim because of the minimum food she was getting in her system, Rilianne White knew that the woman had a body that beat plastic surgery any day. It was a gut feeling, and Rilianne White wanted to verify with the patient awake with her.
Unfortunately, she remembered the Head Nurse's words: the patient had not woken up for a few years now, so why would she wake up now?
Deep in her heart, Rilianne White made a promise-she would befriend the girl if she ever woke up.
Rilianne White took care of the patient-which she found out was named Zheng Mimi from her files-for approximately three months. Each day, she would take care of the patient in terms of appearance and hygiene and made sure to monitor her heartbeat and other vitals. She also began massaging her muscles so that the woman wouldn't spend as much time in physical therapy due to inactivity for a few years. Even with Rilianne White's help, Zheng Mimi's muscles were extremely stiff, so the young intern knew it would take minimally one year for her to walk... if she ever woke up.
Rilianne White sighed as she stared at the modern day Sleeping Beauty. She began to understand why everyone had assumed the girl was a hopeless case-she never stirred or showed any signs of waking up. It was like she was an empty body! Nonetheless, Rilianne White was careful with the patient, believing that the girl would wake up one day.
To her amazement and astonishment, the girl's fingers twitched. Rilianne White's eyes widened in shock as the comatose Sleeping Beauty's eyes fluttered. She found herself staring at a pair of doe-like, dark eyes that contrasted with her seductive face. Fortunately, they suited her appearance and gave the feeling of a small bunny wanting to be protected.
"W-W-Where..." Her hoarse voice snapped Rilianne White out of her trance as the young intern quickly and urgently yelled for the doctor. She turned to Zheng Mimi and assured, "Don't worry! You're in the hospital..."
"H-Hospital?" Zheng Mimi's head throbbed when she remembered the last thing that happened: her death as Yu Zhenzhen. After Qing Xiaolin stabbed her, Nangong Longwei had frantically entered the tent only to find he was too late. He saw her close her tearful eyes for an eternal slumber... Zheng Mimi's heart throbbed when she remembered his dead eyes. No longer did they hold coldness, but desperation as he stared at her dying form.
She bit her cracked lip to prevent a sob. She was officially in the modern world and there was no way back. Everything was over. Their love was over.
And judging by how her parents weren't even there, Zheng Mimi had the feeling she was in a coma for a long time. Zheng Mimi swallowed her saliva to help her dry throat and reminded herself-a new life without you...
Rilianne White noticed Zheng Mimi's pretty eyes alternate between sadness and regret until they finally turned cold. She felt her heart full with pity for the former comatose girl... she promised herself that she would take care of the woman out of pity. Who knew her decision had allowed her to meet the greatest friend she ever had? Or more commonly known as a best friend...
1. Rotten Eggs are the New Cupid
In a palace decorated with gold and jade, a man in his late thirties sat on his dragon throne with apathetic eyes, staring at the minister kowtowing before him. His expressionless features were cold enough to freeze the Underworld, his ruthlessness causing many to shiver. The minister that was kowtowing felt the temperature in the court room continuing to drop at an alarming rate and lowered his head more pitifully.
"Your Majesty, for the sake of the people, an heir is needed!" The minister's bravely could only be seen as foolishness among the other ministers. The man that was bowing knew that he'd risk his life with what he was asking, but he bravely continued to push the emperor's nerves with the unavoidable question: will His Majesty take concubines... or even an empress?
The emperor pursed his lips and narrowed his cold eyes, causing everyone to shudder and pray for the idiotic man for bringing up the emperor's unpleasant memories.
"So, " the emperor's booming voice faltered, "We need heirs to make the people happy?"
The minister trembled but squeaked a quiet yes.
The emperor chuckled bitterly and slammed his fist on the throne violently, "We have made the empire prosper for many years without complaint, but We have asked our marriage to be left alone. Have We not done enough!?"
The minster paled and shook his head fervidly, "Your Highness is magnanimous! Your Highness is merciful..."
"But?" The emperor roared in anger, awaiting the minister's excuse for his atrocity.
The minister gulped and mumbled, "But a crown prince should be stated properly for stability..."
The emperor laughed sarcastically, "And tell me, Minister Yue, " he then proceeded to point at the bowing man with his index finger, "Do you think your daughter should be the mother of Our nation?"
Minister Yue quivered but kept his head bowed. The emperor closed his eyes at his forming headache and ordered, "Take him away."
Minster Yue widened his wrinkled eyes in fear and began begging the emperor for forgiveness as the emperor's guards dragged him away. Unfortunately for him, he had his fate sealed the moment he brought up the topic with the emperor.
The emperor glanced at the shivering court and murmured, "Anyone else caring to share their opinion about Our heirs and marriage? Anyone else willing to showcase their daughter to interest Us?"
The remaining court members fell to their knees as the emperor waved them off, dismissing his morning court. Once the last member left, he left his throne room and began wandering his garden, sighing and looking at the sky, wishing it would swallow him like it swallowed her.
It had been a decade since that incident and he had been haunted by his remorse every moment of it. He kept thinking: what if he never left the tent? What if he protected her in time? The what ifs swirled around his mind; suffocating his heart.
Suddenly, a beautiful, ghastly woman appeared with a frown. She noticed the aura of melancholy surrounding him and sighed, "Nangong Longwei, how long are you going to grieve for a girl that doesn't and will never belong to you?"
The emperor, named Nangong Longwei, glared at the woman with disgust, "How long are you going to be pestering me, Yu Zhenzhen?"
The spirit, named Yu Zhenzhen, heart ripped to pieces at his gaze. All these years, all these lifetimes... why did he never give her the look that he gave two other women? Albeit the first one he was forced, but how could he fall in love with the second one while she borrowed Yu Zhenzhen's body?
The same woman who caused him to want death to lull him to be together, with her.
"Let me ask you, " Yu Zhenzhen's voice rung out, ignoring Nangong Longwei's question. "How long are you going to be wasting on a woman not from our world?"
That's right. After the incident, Nangong Longwei had gone berserk until Yu Zhenzhen appeared before him and explained the whole conspiracy, calming his physical state, but unfortunately, not his mental state.
"Eternity and beyond."
Three words caused Yu Zhenzhen to smile sadly since deep in her heart, she knew he would answer like that.
"Then would you like to go to where she is?"
Nangong Longwei froze and turned to Yu Zhenzhen, his dead eyes glimmering with a tint of hope. Yu Zhenzhen sighed and pulled out the food she had hidden-a rotten egg.
Nangong Longwei's frowned in disgust and disbelief, giving Yu Zhenzhen a gaze of wonder. She ignored his dark, phoenix eyes and explained, "You wanted to go to her world, did you not? This is your chance, you fool!"
"Yu Zhenzhen... if this is another one of your antics, I swear-"
"Listen!" Yu Zhenzhen pleaded with unshed tears, "I know it may seem strange, but for once, please believe me. I know I omit an aura of negativity, " she mockingly pointed at herself, "but I cannot withstand you ruining your life! I will allow myself to suffer in exchange of your happiness! Please listen..."
Nangong Longwei's eyes continued to hold hostility until Yu Zhenzhen snapped her fingers, freezing him. His eyes flashed with anger and he tried to struggle, but it felt like he was being held back by an invisible rope. Yu Zhenzhen took a deep breath and placed a rotten egg in his mouth, despite his struggling. She forced him to swallow and whispered, "Live happy and goodbye. I will get over you." She had repeated this sentence multiple times before, but this time, she meant it. She didn't want to waste anymore time on him...
Nangong Longwei widened his eyes in shock as a sensation began overwhelming his soul, completely ignoring the terrible taste of the egg. He finally understood that Yu Zhenzhen had been telling the truth-she was sending him where his lover lived.
She snapped her fingers again and he was released. He turned to her and asked, "What's her name?"
Yu Zhenzhen averted her gaze from his intense one and remained silent. He repeated the question, but she continued to ignore him. Finally, he feel on the ground with an audible thud when his soul disappeared completely. Yu Zhenzhen sighed in relief and shame. Despite beginning her journey of getting over Nangong Longwei, she didn't have the guts to tell him Zheng Mimi's name. She wanted to see if it truly was true love-would they meet in the new world, completely unaware of each other's identity?
If yes, good for them.
Otherwise, Yu Zhenzhen didn't care. From this moment on, nothing mattered to her. She had lost all association to the duo. The ghost stared at the cracking sky. It seemed like what she had feared was becoming reality-the world was falling apart without a male or female lead. Soon, everyone who existed here would ceased exist...
A tear escaped Yu Zhenzhen's eye. She pursed her lips and mumbled, "Zheng Mimi... as my apology to you, I'll do one last thing..." the ghost snapped her fingers and rotten eggs appeared in the food of each person she knew cared for Zheng Mimi. From her maid, Er Xi, that Yu Zhenzhen herself never treated with respect to Yu Lijie, the brother she had taken for granted. Even her parents that had suffered because of her selfishness, she allowed a reincarnation. Practically everyone that Zheng Mimi had associated with reincarnated in the real world. She would make sure everyone transmigrated the moment the girl woke up to allow things to progress more smoothly.
Finally, feeling as though she had repented enough for her sins, Yu Zhenzhen smiled nostalgically and closed her eyes, a peaceful aura surrounding her. No longer was she vengeful, now, she was ready to spend her eternity in the Underworld...
With that, Yu Zhenzhen's ghost slowly faded away, destroying the world along with her.
2. The Rebirth of the Cowardly Young Master
"Jinfeng! Jinfeng wake up!" Nangong Longwei heard frantic voices echoing around him, suddenly forcing his eyes wide open. His gaze was met with an abundance of people all sharing one similarity-worry for him.
Jinfeng? Who's that?
"Oppa!" A foreign, yet beautiful girl cried, "We were all so worried!"
Nangong Longwei furrowed his brows, "Who are you people?"
All the people visibly gasped in horror. It seemed like the famous Wang Jinfeng had lost his memories due to the car wreck accident! "My son, " a glamorous woman in her forties sobbed, "my son can't remember his mother!"
A stern-looking man comforted the woman while directing a glare in his direction, like it was his fault for not knowing who the heck these people were. Nangong Longwei, having been an emperor for the past decade, had accumulated quite a bit of pride, so he coldly glared at the man like he was inferior.
The man's eyes widened in shock, like he couldn't believe Nangong Longwei, no, cowardly Jinfeng was capable of such actions. He murmured something to a man in a white lab coat, forcing the man to nervously walk forward and ask, "Young master, are you sure you don't remember anyone?"
Nangong Longwei shook his head and the man sighed. "It seems like the young master has amnesia due to the accident. I'm only making an assumption, but we'll run a few tests to confirm."
The dramatic woman from earlier frowned, "What can we do, doctor?"
The doctor sighed as he stared at the Madame of the Wang family. He knew one wrong word could cost him his job, "For now, please try to remind him as much as you can without making him feel pressured. For now, let's start with names, especially young master's name."
The young woman opened her mouth to speak to Nangong Longwei but the young girl from earlier interrupted her. This surprisingly didn't irritate the woman, but she only smiled sweetly at the girl in return.
"Oppa, " the girl started, "my name is Kim Moonhae, or Moonhae for short. Or if oppa wants to call me like you always do, I'm your Little Moon." Nangong Longwei noticed her adoring eyes and cringed. Deep in his heart, he knew she was not the girl in front of him.
He stiffly shook his head, "Miss Kim, it's best if we stay on unfamiliar terms as I don't remember who you are." I don't even know what the word oppa means... and her dialect is a bit different from mine.
Kim Moonhae eyes shined with tears but she nodded pitifully. Nangong Longwei glanced around and noticed the clothes they wore were completely different than what he was used to. Even the room was decorated with unfamiliar furniture and things he didn't recognize. Was this the world she is in? It's so foreign, so different! How am I going to get used to it?
He sighed thinking of the difficulty of finding her without knowing her name. Luckily, Nangong Longwei had always been sensitive so he'll definitely and hopefully recognize her.
Kim Moonhae noticed him sigh and thought it was because he had lost his memories. Her heart ached as she stared at her oppa.
Despite being the adoptive daughter of the famous Valmonte family, Wang Jinfeng never discriminated against her like her own older brother, Helios Valmonte. Every time Kim Moonhae appeared in front of her older brother, he would give her a look of disgust. His blonde hair and blue eyes deeply contrasted against her black hair and brown-black eyes. He despised her so much that he didn't allow the family name of Valmonte to be given to her, forcing Kim Moonhae to keep her actual surname of Kim. His prejudice was confusing since he was a friend of Wang Jinfeng, who had the same black hair and black eyes combination. Although Kim Moonhae didn't bother with her older brother like she did when she was younger because he was rude to all Asian women that shared similar features.
If one day he fell for a woman that had black hair and black eyes, Kim Moonhae wouldn't know how to react. Jealousy started to fill her heart for the imaginary woman before she shook off her stupidity. Helios Valmonte was a prince-like figure who would marry a beautiful, European princess-like figure. There was no way he'd want to taint himself with Asian women. With that thought, Kim Moonhae took a deep breath of relief.
"What is my name?" Nangong Longwei suddenly asked, snapping her out of her thoughts. She smiled and said, "Oppa's name is Wang Jinfeng, " when he heard his body's name, he felt like someone had punched him in the guts as foreign memories spilled inside his head. Memories of the young master named Wang Jinfeng poured inside and slowly replaced his previous memories. Nangong Longwei widened his eyes in horror as his precious memories were quickly being replaced by unknown memories...
How will I find her!?
That was his last thought before he passed out.
