Introduction

Tonight was supposed to be our third anniversary, a celebration of three blissful years with Gabrielle, the woman who saved me after my first wife, Molly, destroyed my family.

I was heading to the master bedroom for her gift when I overheard voices: Gabrielle and Molly.

"You actually pulled it off, Gabi. You married him," Molly said, dripping envy.

Gabrielle laughed, a sound that now sent a chill down my spine. "Of course I did. It was the only way. I had to make him pay for what he did to Ryan, for what he did to our family."

The online scandal, my parents' accident-all of it, her idea.

The woman I loved, the one I thought was my angel, was the architect of my destruction, plotting revenge for a past I didn' t even understand.

My parents? I was the one who anonymously paid off their debts, saving them from ruin. Ryan? He was the bully who tormented me through high school.

My savior was my tormentor, and I had unknowingly invited her into my life for three years of calculated torture.

I forced a brittle smile, pretending not to have heard the sickening truth.

I would make them pay.

Chapter 1

My first wife, Molly Chavez, ruined my life to impress a guy.

She took a recording of my parents, both retired and beloved teachers, spliced it with fabricated audio, and leaked it online. The clip made them sound like they were admitting to a decades-old cheating scandal at their school. It went viral. The online mob descended.

My parents, driving to my house in a panic, were sideswiped by a reckless driver. The car flipped. The stress of the scandal, the crash-it was too much. They both suffered severe internal injuries.

On the day of their emergency surgery, Molly, egged on by her childhood friend Ryan Morris, did the unthinkable. Ryan, a self-proclaimed spiritualist, claimed the surgery's date was cosmically unlucky for him. He said it would curse his financial future. To please him, Molly convinced our families to delay the operation.

That delay nearly killed my parents.

Amidst the chaos, while my parents lay in critical condition, Molly served me with divorce papers. I saw pictures of her and Ryan celebrating online just hours later.

Then Gabrielle, Molly' s younger sister, appeared. She was my angel. She handled the press, found a top-tier private clinic for my parents, and held me together when I was falling apart. She condemned her sister' s cruelty, swore she was nothing like her.

I fell in love with her. I believed her. For three years, I thought I' d finally found my safe harbor.

Tonight is our third anniversary. And tonight, I found out it was all a lie.

I was heading to the master bedroom to get the gift I' d bought her, a simple gold locket she' d once admired. I heard voices from inside. Gabrielle and Molly.

"I can't believe it's been three years," Molly said, her voice dripping with a strange mix of envy and admiration. "You actually pulled it off, Gabi. You married him."

Gabrielle laughed, a sound that used to warm my heart but now sent a chill down my spine. "Of course I did. It was the only way. I had to make him pay for what he did to Ryan, for what he did to our family."

My hand froze on the doorknob.

"The online scandal, leaking that fake audio of his parents... that was genius," Molly continued.

"It was my idea," Gabrielle said, her voice laced with pride. "All of it. I knew a simple public shaming wasn't enough. He needed to suffer. He needed to lose everything, just like we did after Dad' s business went under because of him. Just like Ryan suffered in high school because of him."

I felt the air leave my lungs. My legs went weak. I leaned against the wall, my mind reeling.

It was all her. The savior was the architect.

The most twisted part? I was the one Ryan relentlessly bullied in high school. And Gabrielle' s parents... I was the one who saved them. When my first security protocol sold, I used a significant chunk of the money to anonymously pay off their debts and set them up with a new, quiet life in Oregon. They thought it was a lottery win. They had no idea the "monster" who supposedly ruined them was their secret benefactor.

The door opened. Gabrielle saw me standing there, my face ashen.

"Nate? Honey, what's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."

She reached for me, her face a perfect mask of concern.

I forced a smile, a brittle thing that felt like it would shatter my face. "Nothing. Just... feeling a little overwhelmed with happiness. Happy anniversary, Gabi."

She smiled back, relieved. "Happy anniversary, my love."

The lie tasted like poison in my mouth.

Chapter 2

Gabrielle, nudged by Ryan who had just arrived, came to me in the kitchen. "Honey, Ryan was just saying how much he loves shellfish. Why don't you make that special paella for dinner? As a little anniversary surprise for me."

Ryan stood behind her, a smug look on his face. He knew he had a deadly allergy to shellfish. This wasn't a request; it was a test. A trap.

"I don't think that's a good idea, Gabi," I said, keeping my voice steady. "You know Ryan's allergy. We can't risk it."

Gabrielle's smile tightened. "Oh, don't be such a worrywart. He'll be careful. It's for our anniversary."

"No," I said firmly. I made a simple pasta instead.

Later, as I was carrying the pot of boiling water to drain the pasta, Ryan "accidentally" stumbled into me. The pot flew from my hands, and scalding water cascaded down my legs and feet. I cried out, collapsing to the floor as a searing pain shot through me.

"Oh my God, Ryan, are you okay?" Gabrielle shrieked, rushing past me.

She completely ignored me, kneeling beside Ryan, who had a few drops of water on his expensive shoes. "Did it burn you? Let me see!"

He was clutching his hand, wincing dramatically from a tiny red splotch where a splash had landed. I was on the floor, my skin blistering, and she didn't even glance my way.

The anniversary dinner was a nightmare. It wasn't for us. It was for them. They toasted to "the day it all began," laughing at inside jokes I wasn't part of.

Then came the gift. Gabrielle produced a small, elegant box.

"For us," she said, her eyes sparkling.

Inside were two identical, modern silver rings. "To symbolize our union."

I forced myself to put one on. Later that night, scrolling through my phone while pretending to sleep, I saw a new photo on Ryan's private social media, posted by Gabrielle. It was a picture of her hand and Ryan's, intertwined. They were both wearing the matching rings. The caption read: "Three years down, a lifetime to go. #soulmates"

The final blow came the next morning. Gabrielle sat me down at the dining table, a stack of papers and a pen in front of me. Ryan was there, leaning against the counter like a king in his court.

"Nate," she said, her voice all business. "I need you to sign these."

I looked down. They were patent transfer documents. For all my security protocols. My life's work.

"You're giving my patents to him?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"Ryan needs a solid foundation to start his new venture," she said, as if it were the most reasonable thing in the world. "This is the best way."

I stared at her, my mind numb. "No."

Her face went cold. "You don't seem to understand, Nate. Your parents' care at that clinic... it's expensive. I control the payments. One phone call, and their life support is cut. It's that simple."

She let the threat hang in the air.

"So, you have a choice," she continued, a cruel smile playing on her lips. "Sign the papers and you can be our little stay-at-home assistant. Cook, clean, be useful. Or, I can make a call to your old company. I hear they have a janitorial position open. It would be so poetic, don't you think?"
