Benedict Muller was born in the modern time when the evolution of technology and science made waves in human genetics and the universe. Everyone has special powers. Only rich families will always excel as they influence to be in control. Poor people like Benedict Muller could only accept the conditions. When Benedict was 18 years old, he decided to join a military group to fight and earn a decent living. With last hope and strong determination, Benedict took the test. But before he knew it, the greatest evolution of science happened. The system synchronised with Benedict. It was time for Benedict Muller to rise.

Chapter 1 System Emergence

Benedict Muller felt his heart pounding. Today was the day that would decide his fate. Today was Benedict's first day at The Veil military academy in Galdorien School's Babylon sector. He had to take a test to determine his level of power in The Veil, a dimension of another realm that transformed the world into one filled with power.

The Veil has seven levels: Essence, Vitality, Meridian, Nodes, Pranic, Vortex, and Divine. The higher a person's level, the greater their potential and abilities. There are only nine people in the world who have reached the Divine level, and they are called Markopoulos, the nine revered ones. They are the supreme rulers of the world, who divide the world into seven sectors or kingdoms.

Benedict lives in the Babylon sector, which includes the European region. This sector was known for being peaceful and harmonious despite having many Aetherians, people who possessed powers from The Veil. The Aetherians in this sector are mostly at levels five and six, namely Pranic and Vortex.

Benedict was not an Aetherian. The man did not even know whether he had the power of The Veil or not. Benedict knew for a fact that his parents died in an accident when he was six years old. His father was Mikkel Muller, a German-Irish descendant, and his mother was Jameela Hathor, an Egyptian of mixed Asian descent.

Benedict inherited sorrel hair from his father and dark brown eyes from his mother. Benedict had a handsome face and an athletic body, but that didn't help him in life. Benedict was always considered as trash by the people around him.

But today, Benedict hopes to change his life. He hopes to find his power in The Veil and become an Aetherian. Benedict hopes to have a better future.

Benedict now stood among thousands of other students gathered in the courtyard of the military academy. They were all high school graduates from all over Dublin, the city where Benedict lived. They all had to take a one-year conscription test to determine their level in The Veil. It is an absolute rule imposed by the Markopoulos government.

The first test is a levelling test by entering a special box machine to determine the level of The Veil. Students must hold the handle inside the machine with both hands and let their energy flow into it. The machine would light up with colours according to the student's level.

Benedict felt nervous and panicked when the test supervisor, Fred, first called his name.

"Benedict Muller! Please come forward!" Fred shouted loudly.

"G-good sir!" replied Benedict in a trembling voice.

Benedict walked with unsteady steps towards the machine in front of him. Benedict looked anxiously at the colourful rays coming out of the machine.

The white colour meant level one or Essence, the lowest level in The Veil. People at this level can only feel a little energy from The Veil but cannot use it.

The yellow colour means level two or Vitality, which is a slightly higher level than level one. People at this level can use the energy from The Veil to increase their health and stamina.

Green colour means level three or Meridian, a fairly high level in The Veil. People at this level can open and activate their body's meridians, the energy channels. They can flow energy from The Veil throughout their body, increasing their strength and speed.

The blue colour stands for level four or Nodes, which is a very high level within The Veil. People at this level can open and activate their nodes, which are energy points within their meridians. They can concentrate energy from The Veil into specific nodes and release special powers according to those nodes.

The colour purple stands for level five or Pranic, an extraordinary level within The Veil. People at this level can activate their pranic, the energy centres within their nodes. They can transform energy from The Veil into other forms according to their pranic, such as fire, water, wind, earth, etc.

The red colour means level six or Vortex, which is an amazing level in The Veil. People at this level can open and activate their vortexes, which are vortices of energy within their pranic. They can manipulate space and time according to their vortex, such as teleportation, acceleration, deceleration, etc.

The colour black means level seven or Divine, which is the highest level in The Veil. People at this level can unlock and activate their divine, the core energy within their vortex. They can create and destroy anything according to their divine, such as life, death, light, darkness, etc.

Benedict wished the bar would light up in any colour other than white. Benedict did not want to be an Essence, a trash with no power. Benedict wanted to be a powerful and respected Aetherian.

Benedict entered and stepped, holding inside, and closed his eyes. The man felt a strange vibration in his bag. Benedict did not know that the vibration came from a grey dice he had found in a trash bin a few days ago.

Benedict didn't realise that there was a ringing sound inside his head. Benedict thought it was just a stress-induced hallucination. Benedict didn't know that it was the sound of Horus, a superior system inside the dice he was carrying.

Horus is a system created by Professor Bernard, the scientist who opened the dimensional gate of The Veil. Horus can grant power to its users by transferring power from The Veil.

[New user detected. The system will give you power. The system will transfer power in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.]

Benedict didn't listen to the voice message. Benedict was only focused on the level test he was undergoing. Benedict hoped to get a high level and become a respected Aetherian. But suddenly, the machine beeped loudly and sent out an emergency alarm.

Chapter 2 Association

Of course, Benedict will get level one training, which is harder than the other levels. The lower the level, the higher the intensity of the training and the mentor must also be very disciplined.

Benedict entered the dormitory for level one, with facilities such as rickety huts. The level also determines the living facilities; the higher the level, the more prestigious the 'Dormitory' residence you get.

Benedict promised himself to change his miserable life; his mother's father had left him no inheritance. A message from his ancestors told him that those who are rich and powerful make their fortunes.

Thousands of new officers lined up neatly in the halls of Galdorien School, waiting for the ceremony to receive the new officer soldiers. They were the top graduates of the world's leading military school, Markopoulos, who had passed the level test and demonstrated their shadow abilities.

Among them, three people stood out for having level 5, which was the highest level an officer could achieve. They were Vincent Moris, Raquel Maccarthy, and Jacob Marseille. All three are from the kingdom of Babylon, one of the richest and most powerful sectors in the Markopoulos world. They are also the children of the wealthiest people in the kingdom.

However, not all the new officers were happy with their presence. One of them was Benedict Muller because he was the poorest and weakest officer in the Markopoulos world.

Benedict envied and hated Vincent, Raquel, and Jacob. He regarded them as arrogant and conceited people who relied solely on their parents' wealth and power.

Benedict also didn't realise that he was being watched by a special agent from the PSA (Prime Soldier Agent) division, an elite division of the Markopoulos world army. The agent is Carly Monet, a random white-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned woman. She is a commander in the PSA division and one of the best soldiers in the Markopoulos world.

Carly is assigned to keep a secret eye on Benedict, as she is suspected to be the cause of the machine malfunction that happened some time ago. The machine is a sophisticated machine used to measure the levels and abilities of new shadow officers. When Benedict enters the machine box, the machine suddenly explodes and emits black smoke.

Carly hopes to find clues about the malfunctioning machine and uncover the secrets Benedict is hiding.

Meanwhile, Arthur, the Galdorien School's military director and the Markopoulos world army general, gave Carly a special assignment.

"Carly, please keep an eye on that student named Benedict Muller. You will also be his mentor at this school. I hope you can find out what he is hiding," Arthur said.

"Yes, General!" replied Carly firmly.

Arthur and Carly headed to the halls of Galdorien School. They saw the new officers who were ready for the ceremony.

Arthur stepped up to the podium and made a loud speech.

"Good morning, new officers! Congratulations to those of you who passed this year's level test. You are the Aetherians, the brave soldiers who will protect the world of Markopoulos from the threat of otherworldly monsters."

The new officers applauded loudly.

"To mark the beginning of your journey as Aetherians, we will symbolically present the officer badge to the best officer representative who has passed this year's level test. He is an officer who has a level 5 score and shadow power, Jacob Marseille. Officer Jacob, please come up!"

The applause grew louder from the new officers.

Jacob Marseille is among the best officers to pass this year's level test. Jacob has a level 5 score and the shadow power of light, which is the ability to control light according to his will. Jacob is also the son of Franco Marseille, the richest man in the kingdom of Babylon, and the owner of Evermore Corporation. This company develops weapons technology and communication access.

Jacob is an 18-year-old male with wavy blonde hair, slightly dull eyes and fair skin. His face is very handsome, so many women are fascinated with him. Jacob also has a friendly and polite demeanour, so many people admire him.

Jacob stepped up to the podium with steady steps and stood beside Arthur. Arthur gave Jacob his officer's badge and placed it on Jacob's left breast.

"Thank you, general," Jacob said with a smiling face.

"Congratulations, Officer Jacob, you are an example to other officers. You have shown great achievement in this year's level test. You also possess the rare and powerful shadow power of light. You are a talented and potential Aetherian," Arthur praised.

Thunderous applause from the new officers.

"Jacob, I love you!" shouted all the female officers.

Jacob walked down the steps of the podium and returned to his place in the third row.

Jacob smiled at Benedict, who was in the first row near the podium. Benedict gave Jacob a disapproving look and assumed all the rich people would bully him, like Vincent and Raquel.

Arthur continued his speech, "Well, you have all officially become officers of The Veil Academy at Galdorien School. All training will be divided into several portions ranging from joint training with all officers of various levels, competitions between officers, and training with mentors. Mentors will randomly select all of you to be directly mentored in teams of four. Happy training, and please disperse!"

Jacob rushed to his luxurious dormitory and grabbed some food to visit Benedict as he had promised to visit his dormitory. Fellow officers could visit each other in their respective dormitories as long as they were already at level 6. Jacob had that right, but due to his recalcitrant nature, Jacob jumped the fence.

When Jacob rang the bell, Benedict was already inside his room doing some physical exercises to strengthen his body.

Jacob let out a long sigh to contain his emotions.

"Hmm... no, believe me, I'm just here to be friends with you. Here, I brought food for you!" said Jacob while giving a food bag.

Benedict saw that, feeling confused and suspicious. Benedict couldn't trust Jacob. The man had been betrayed and hurt too many times by rich people like Jacob.

Benedict had too often been insulted and humiliated by Vincent and Raquel, two other level 5 officers from the kingdom of Babylon. He had tasted the bitterness of life as a level 3 officer without shadow abilities, too, many times.

"I don't need your food. I don't need pity from people like you. Leave me alone!" Benedict snapped angrily.

Chapter 3 Team Building

Jacob felt sad and disappointed with Benedict's behaviour. He didn't understand why Benedict hated him so much. Jacob just wanted to be friends with Benedict because he felt something was interesting and special about Benedict.

"You're an interesting young man. I want to befriend you; I will visit your dormitories after this," Jacob murmured softly.

Benedict was disgusted and annoyed by Jacob's words. Benedict considered Jacob to be a hypocrite. Benedict dismissed Jacob's hand and looked away.

"Don't dream! I will never be friends with you! You're just an arrogant rich man! You just want to make fun of me! You just want to hurt me!" Benedict shouted angrily.

Jacob was surprised and confused by Benedict's reaction. But Jacob did not give up on approaching Benedict. Jacob kept smiling and being friendly to Benedict.

"Calm down, and I won't do anything to you. I just want to talk to you and tell you something important," Jacob said calmly.

"What's important? What do you want to tell me?" asked Benedict suspiciously.

Jacob took a deep breath, then said seriously, "I know who you really are. I know what you're hiding from everyone. I know what happened to that malfunctioning machine. I know what you were doing in the box."

Benedict was shocked to hear Jacob's words. Benedict felt scared and panicked. Benedict stepped back from Jacob and looked for something he could use to protect himself.

"How do you know all that? Who are you really? What did you come here for?" Benedict asked shakily.

Jacob approached Benedict and looked at him with concerned eyes.

"I am not your enemy, Benedict. I'm not a spy or an assassin, either. I am your friend who wants to help you. I came here because I know you have great potential. I know you have incredible shadow abilities. I know you are an Aetherian unlike any other."

Benedict did not believe Jacob's words. Benedict felt that Jacob was just lying and deceiving him.

"What do you mean? I don't have shadow abilities. I'm just a weak and helpless level-3 officer. I'm not a different Aetherian. I'm just an Aetherian who was wasted and left out," Benedict said bitterly.

Jacob shook his head and smiled gently.

"You are wrong, Benedict. You have very special shadow abilities. You are a rare and dangerous Aetherian who can change the destiny of the Markopoulos world."

Benedict took a deep breath to calm himself and said, "I'm sorry if I offended you." "Let's go!" Benedict extended an invitation.

The division of teams was announced over the speakers. There would be 750 teams established, and after three months, a competition between individuals and teams would be held. The awards included money, unique training with the best instructors, and exclusive access to the military library.

"It appears like an announcement is on the way. "I'm hoping we can work together," Jacob stated.

Jacob also extends his hand and rubs it against his fist.

"Well, I'm ready to accept that if I betray," Jacob remarked with a charming grin and coquettish twinkle in his eyes.

"Team 10, Benedict Muller, Jacob Marseille, Clara Michelle Gomez, and Jennifer Marshall, are in tenth grade for mentor guide Carly Monet!" Officers, report to the training site immediately!" screamed Benjamin, the deputy military director, over the loudspeaker.

"Our names have been called, and we have formed a group; fate has brought us together." "Let's get started!" said Jacob. Benedict was carrying two bags as they walked to the practice pitch. The yellow ball was in one bag, and the food Jacob had given him was in the other.

Each squad will be assigned to a separate training field, depending on who the mentor is. The more advanced the mentor, the more difficult the training. Carly, who is already a Deluxe Soldier Agent and the most powerful mentor at Galdorien School, will give extensive instruction.

They arrived in the practice room together. Clara, Michelle Gomez, and Jennifer Marshall had arrived.

Clara is a woman with short, straight brunette hair and blue pupils who is dressed in a burgundy suit and gown. Clara wields a long sword with a blue hilt and a navy sheath depicting a sea snake. Clara is level 4 and possesses the 7 Gods technique, a legendary sword skill sought for by Markopoulos.

On the other hand, Jennifer Marshall is a curly-haired girl with black hair and green eyes. Jennifer is dressed casually in a red dress.

Jennifer held a black double dagger in both her right and left hands. Jennifer possesses a tremendous healing ability. Jennifer is an alchemist skilled at concocting medicines; the Marshalls own a fabled divine alchemist book that Markopoulos seeks. Jennifer's drawback is that her Level is only at level 2, making her techniques less effective.

Carly observed from the top of the hill, utilising stealth mode to avoid being spotted by the four of them.

"I'll put them to the test, gauntlet mode!" Carly mumbled as she shaped the little stone in her fingers into a gauntlet.

Carly's ability is the art of form, transforming tiny stone weapons into any weapon the user imagines. Carly is after Benedict and wants to understand about his powers as well as his secrets.

Carly jumped over the boulders with grace and speed before punching Benedict.

"Shadow step!" says the person.

Jacob's body moved quickly and deflected Carly's attack. Two powerful blows collided, causing Jacob to jump and collide with Benedict.

They both collided with a massive rock and spilt blood. Jacob's massive and powerful torso crushed Benedict's body.

"Man, get up; you're so heavy!" Benedict said.
