Dania Kane stared down at the crumpled pathology report in her hand, her eyes locked on the bold black words: Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Stage IV. She dug her fingernails deep into her palms just to keep her knees from buckling.
The harsh fluorescent lights of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital corridor washed over her bloodless cheeks. Pressing a trembling hand against the cold tile wall, she dragged her feet forward, struggling to calm the violent hammering in her chest.
Two nurses hurried past her pushing a medical cart, their voices dropping to an excited whisper.
"Did you see the VIP suite on the top floor? The CEO of Lester Group carried that girl in himself. He hasn't left her side for a second."
Dania froze in her tracks. Hearing her husband Emiliano Lester's name knocked the air straight out of her lungs.
She spun around immediately, dragging her heavy, weakened legs toward the private elevator at the end of the hall. When the doors slid open on the top floor, the thick carpet swallowed her footsteps. Men in black suits guarded the hallway, locking down the entire VIP wing.
The bodyguards recognized Dania as Emiliano's wife. They exchanged hesitant glances but stepped aside without stopping her, allowing her to walk straight to the half-open door of the luxury suite.
Through the gap, she saw the tall, broad-shouldered man who was supposed to be in Europe handling a corporate merger. After three years of a cold, loveless marriage, Emiliano was sitting on the edge of the hospital bed, his posture radiating a tenderness Dania had never once received.
His large hand gently stroked the hair of the woman lying against the pillows, his deep voice thick with raw emotion.
"Don't be afraid. I will never let you die."
Lying on the bed with pale cheeks and tears clinging to her lashes was Bailee Kane-Dania's sister who had vanished three years ago, presumed dead by all of New York's high society, and the only woman Emiliano had ever kept in his heart.
A deafening roar filled Dania's ears. Her fingers went numb, and her own terminal diagnosis slipped from her grasp, the crisp paper rustling softly against the floor.
Emiliano's head snapped toward the door. The moment his cold, dark gray eyes met Dania's, the warmth vanished from his face, replaced instantly by pure disgust.
Bailee let out a weak gasp and shrank back into Emiliano's chest, her voice trembling.
"Dania... please don't be mad at Emiliano. I'm dying, and I begged him to come see me one last time."
Dania pushed the door open and stared coldly at the embracing pair, clenching her shaking fingers into tight fists.
"So this is what you called an urgent acquisition in Europe?"
Emiliano stood up abruptly, his tall frame casting a suffocating shadow as he strode over and grabbed Dania's wrist, squeezing hard enough to crush her bones.
He looked down at her with icy contempt.
"Wipe that jealous look off your face. Bailee has terminal leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant."
Dania sucked in a sharp breath from the pain in her wrist, fighting back the burning ache in her eyes.
"What does her illness have to do with me?"
Emiliano let out a harsh laugh and slammed a forged compatibility report against her chest.
"Your HLA typing is a full match. Get ready. Tomorrow morning, you're going into the operating room to donate your marrow."
The sharp edge of the paper sliced across Dania's chin, leaving a thin line of blood. Her eyes widened in disbelief as the sheets fluttered to the ground.
She bent down, picked up the report with trembling hands, and let out a bitter, breathless laugh.
"You want me to donate bone marrow to her? Emiliano, do you have any idea that I also have-"
Before she could finish, Bailee clutched her chest and broke into a violent coughing fit, spitting a tiny fleck of blood from her bitten tongue onto the white sheets.
Emiliano instantly shoved Dania aside, rushing back to gather Bailee into his arms while roaring for the doctors.
Watching his frantic back, Dania swallowed the rest of her sentence, her heart sinking into an abyss of ice. Several doctors swarmed into the room, shoving Dania against the wall like a piece of unwanted trash.
Once Bailee calmed down, Emiliano turned back to Dania, looking at her as if she were already dead. He yanked his custom silk tie loose, his voice brooking no argument.
"I am not asking for your permission. If you dare refuse, I will make sure Kane Enterprises files for liquidation under the Bankruptcy Code by tomorrow morning."
Dania bit down hard on her lower lip until the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth, meeting his glare without backing down an inch.
"I wouldn't give her a single drop of my blood even if I died!"
Fury flashed in Emiliano's dark eyes, and he shoved her shoulder with brutal force.
Already weak from her advanced leukemia, Dania lost her footing completely and fell backward. The back of her head slammed hard against the sharp metal edge of the doorframe with a heavy thud.
Blinding pain exploded across her skull as warm blood gushed down her neck, soaking her white collar bright red.
Her vision blurred rapidly, sharp pain screaming through her skull. Through the red haze she registered every ounce of his cruelty, no numb resignation settling over her. She saw no pity on Emiliano's cold face, while Bailee let out a fake scream from the bed to hide the triumphant smirk curling her lips.
Nurses in the hallway gasped in horror, only to be blocked outside by the guards. As darkness swallowed Dania whole, Emiliano's merciless voice echoed in her ears.
"Playing dead won't save you. Even if I have to tie you down tomorrow, you're getting on that operating table."
The pungent smell of antiseptic flooded Dania's nose as she forced her heavy eyelids open in the emergency room, letting out a low groan as the ceiling spun violently above her.
Sitting beside the bed, Dr. Kasper Jones immediately set down his medical chart, his warm blue-gray eyes filled with anger and heartache.
"You're finally awake. You have a mild concussion, and with your impaired blood clotting, that gash on your head almost killed you."
Dania struggled to prop herself up on her elbows, but Kasper quickly pressed a gentle, firm hand against her shoulder to keep her flat.
A muted news ticker rolled across the hospital TV mounted on the wall. Snippets about Kane Enterprises' looming loan‑call rattled in the background. She had known for weeks her father Winston had been burning himself out: constant splitting headaches, uncontrolled high blood pressure, yet he brushed off every doctor's warning, burying himself in company crisis.
She reached up and gripped his wrist tightly, her eyes wide with desperate pleading.
"Kasper, help me destroy that AML diagnosis report completely. Nobody can ever find out about it."
Kasper frowned deeply, pushing his gold-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose. As a top hematologist at the hospital and her closest friend for ten years, he knew exactly what she was facing.
"Have you lost your mind, Dania? You need to be admitted for chemotherapy right now! Emiliano is your husband-he has a right to know the truth!"
A bitter laugh escaped Dania's pale lips as tears finally spilled down her cheeks.
"He only cares about keeping Bailee alive. If he finds out I'm sick, he'll just think I'm faking it to get out of donating my bone marrow."
Looking at her broken expression, Kasper laced his fingers tightly together, torn between his medical oath and his decade-long unspoken love for her.
Finally, he let out a defeated sigh and pulled an encrypted flash drive from his white coat pocket, pressing it into her palm.
"All your original blood work is on here. I already wiped your records from the hospital's main server."
Dania closed her fingers tightly around the drive, yanked the IV needle straight out of the back of her hand, and swung her legs off the bed despite Kasper's protests. Putting on her bloodstained coat along with a mask and cap, she slipped out through the hospital's underground service tunnel, evading the Lester family bodyguards.
An hour later, a yellow cab dropped Dania off in front of the massive Lester estate on Long Island.
She pushed open the heavy oak front doors and walked through the empty, echoing foyer, the cold luxury mocking her three years of marriage. Climbing the stairs to the second-floor study, she unlocked the wall safe, pulled out a pre-signed divorce agreement, and slapped it down on the mahogany desk.
The roar of a sports car engine echoed from the driveway. Minutes later, Emiliano strode into the study carrying the chill of the night air and the scent of cigar smoke.
His gaze swept over the white gauze taped to Dania's forehead without a trace of guilt, leaving only cold scrutiny.
Dania slid the papers across the desk toward him, her voice hoarse but steady.
"Sign it. I'm walking away with nothing."
Emiliano's dark gray pupils shrank violently as his eyes landed on the words Divorce Agreement, the air in the room dropping to freezing point. He snatched the documents off the desk, ripped them to shreds right in front of her face, and threw the paper scraps at her like snow.
"Trying to use a divorce to escape the transplant? You're way too naive, Dania."
He stalked forward with a cold sneer, backing her up until her lower back hit the edge of the desk. Dania braced her hands behind her and tilted her chin up, refusing to cower.
"I don't owe Bailee a damn thing, and you have no right to force me!"
Emiliano grabbed her chin in a vise-like grip, forcing her to look straight into his eyes.
"As long as you carry the title of Mrs. Lester, your life and your body belong to me."
He flung her face aside in disgust, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and lit a cigar.
"At eight o'clock tomorrow morning, my private medical team will come straight to the estate to extract your marrow right here."
Shaking from head to toe, Dania snatched the heavy crystal ashtray off the desk and hurled it at the floor by his feet, shattering glass everywhere.
"You're a lunatic! I will never let you do this!"
She screamed at the top of her lungs and bolted for the study door. Moving with terrifying speed, Emiliano crossed the room in two strides, tangled his hand in her long hair, and yanked her backward.
Dania cried out as her scalp burned with pain, crashing backward against his hard chest. Wrapping one arm around her thin waist, he hoisted her effortlessly over his shoulder.
She kicked and pounded her fists against his back, only making his grip tighten like an iron band. Out in the hallway, several housemaids poked their heads out of the service doors, then quickly ducked back inside and locked their doors when Emiliano shot them a murderous glare.
He carried her down the grand corridor, kicked open the heavy double doors of the master bedroom, and walked into the pitch-black room. Without a shred of gentleness, Emiliano threw her onto the center of the king-size bed.
As the mattress bounced beneath her, he ripped off his silk tie, tossed it onto the carpet, and came down on top of her, trapping her completely beneath his heavy frame.
Dania brought her knee up sharply to shove him off, but Emiliano easily pinned her legs down against the mattress with his own heavy thighs.
Catching both of her slender wrists in one large hand, he slammed them into the pillow above her head, his hot, heavy breath brushing against the side of her neck.
"Get off me, you bastard!"
Dania clenched her jaw, her amber eyes blazing with fury and humiliation. With his free hand, Emiliano slowly unbuttoned his dress shirt, his icy gaze scraping across her pale face.
"Didn't you always claim how much you loved me? What's wrong, you can't even stand my touch now?"
He dragged his rough thumb hard across the scabbing cut on her chin, making her shiver violently against her will. Dania turned her head away and spat out a single word.
"Disgusting."
The word ignited the rage in Emiliano's eyes. He gripped her jaw and wrenched her face back toward him.
"Disgusting? You didn't seem to find it disgusting when you snuck off to meet Kasper in the ER earlier tonight."
Dania's pupils contracted sharply, her heart leaping into her throat. Laughing coldly, Emiliano pulled his phone from his pocket, tapped a video file, and tossed it onto the pillow beside her cheek.
The bright screen clearly showed the security footage of Kasper pressing the encrypted flash drive into her hand, capturing every ounce of tenderness in the doctor's eyes.
"Did you really think bribing your little boyfriend to fake a medical disqualification would save you from the operating table?"
Dania gasped for air as a cold hand squeezed her heart. He didn't believe she was dying-he thought she was fabricating evidence just to let her sister die.
Emiliano leaned down until his cold lips brushed right against the shell of her ear.
"If you don't walk into that operating room willingly tomorrow, I'll make sure Kasper loses his medical license permanently and gets blacklisted from every hospital in the country."
The last of Dania's defenses crumbled into dust, and hot tears spilled from the corners of her eyes into her hair.
"Don't touch him... he has nothing to do with this!"
"Then show me how obedient you can be."
Emiliano growled low in his throat and crushed his mouth against her trembling lips in a brutal, punishing kiss. Outside the tall windows, a torrential downpourlashed against the glass, drowning out the muffled sobs and the sound of tearing fabric inside the dark bedroom.
When gray morning light finally filtered through the curtains, Dania lay curled up at the edge of the rumpled bed, staring blankly at the floor as every muscle in her bruised body ached.
Already dressed in a sharp black tailored suit, Emiliano tossed a matte black credit card onto the nightstand.
"Get dressed. The medical team will be here in thirty minutes."
Right then, Dania's phone buzzed frantically on the floor. She scrambled off the bed to answer it, only to hear the Kane family's elderly housekeeper, Martha Higgins, sobbing on the other end.
"Miss Dania, come quick! Your father saw the news about the banks calling in all our loans-he suffered a massive stroke and is in the emergency room right now!"
A loud ringing filled Dania's ears as the phone slipped from her fingers. She stumbled into the walk-in closet and threw a long trench coat over her shivering shoulders.
Emiliano stepped in front of the bedroom door, blocking her path with a deep frown.
"Where do you think you're going? The doctors are almost here."
Dania whipped her head up, glaring at him with bloodshot eyes.
"Get out of my way! My father just had a stroke-I'm going to the hospital!"
Taken aback by the feral desperation on her face, Emiliano lowered his arm by a fraction of an inch. Dania shoved past him with all her remaining strength, running barefoot across the freezing marble floors and out of the mansion into the pouring rain.
Left alone in the bedroom, Emiliano yanked at his collar in frustration and kicked over a standing floor lamp with a loud crash.
Hailing a cab at the estate gates, a soaked Dania rushed to the hospital and ran straight to the intensive care unit. Through the thick glass window, she stared at her father, Winston Kane, lying motionless with tubes snaking into his frail body, and tears blurred her vision.
Martha walked up beside her, wiping her eyes as she handed Dania a thick stack of bank freeze notices and default warnings.
"All the shareholders pulled their funding this morning, Miss Dania. Kane Enterprises won't survive the week."
Taking the heavy papers with shaking hands, Dania leaned back against the cold corridor wall and slid her eyes shut. To save her father's life and his company, she had no choice left but to beg the devil she had just fled.
