The expansive courtyard of the Lycan Council Summit was illuminated by the silvery light of the moon, which was high in the midnight sky. Tension and the smell of restless wolves filled the electrified air. With her heart thumping like a battle drum, Luna Skyheart stood at the edge of the crowd, shrouded in darkness. Her only defence was neutrality, even if she hadn't wanted to attend. Rumours would spread if she turned down the council's invitation. She would be viewed as weak, or worse, as an adversary.
Five ties between mates. Five betrayals. She discovered the hard way that the promises made by fate were nothing more than cruel jokes.
Grasping the edge of her black cloak, she said to herself, "Keep your distance." Her sharp silver eyes looked around the party. Tonight, the most potent Lycans in the realm had gathered, their auras oppressive. Peace treaties were purportedly the Council's topic of discussion, but Luna had other ideas. Power struggles and secret ambitions simmered beneath the surface like a storm.
He was at the heart of it all.
King Rex Reign.
The glittering eyes of the Lycan King scanned the gathering like a predator assessing its prey as he stood upright. Even when he was silent, his magnetic presence demanded attention. With his broad shoulders and dark armour bearing his house's symbol, Rex was a man of might and authority. The way his aura seemed to ripple, like a wolf that was hardly leashed, was what Luna found most striking, though.
Luna had not experienced this feeling in years, yet she felt an odd tug deep in her chest. She shrugged it off fast. It wasn't authentic. It isn't possible.
Behind her, a sneering voice said, "Luna Skyheart."
She turned abruptly and saw her old rival, Selene Nightshade. Wearing a red gown that exuded self-assurance, Selene grinned, her emerald eyes shining with ill intent. "I'm stunned that you had the courage to reveal your face here." Luna whispered,
"Not now, Selene," in a chilly tone.
"Are we scared?" With anger in her words, Selene took a step closer. "You ought not to have shown up. The broken are not welcome here.
Luna's fists tensed, but the air was broken by a thunderous roar before she could react. The audience froze.
A number of creatures appeared out of the forest's shadows, their motions purposeful and predatory. Even though their faces were hidden by the darkness, it was clear that they had malevolent intent.
"Assassins!" a voice cried.
There was anarchy. The courtyard was filled with howls and snarls as lycans transformed into wolves. With their guns shining in the moonlight, the assassins struck quickly. The Lycan King was the direct target of a well-planned attack rather than a haphazard one.
Rex grabbed a huge broadsword from his back and held his stance, his golden eyes narrowing. Over the commotion, his voice roared. "Keep the council safe! Don't allow them to disperse!
Despite her senses telling her to run, Luna's feet would not budge. She saw Rex fight with a fierceness that was both amazing and terrible. He was a tornado of steel and claws, precisely dispatching foes.
Then she noticed it, though.
With an unnaturally fast pace and a blade pointed directly at Rex's exposed back, a shadowy figure slid through the confusion.
Luna didn't think. She moved.
Her body responded instinctively, and she felt a rush of strength that had not been present in years. She launched herself into the battle and caught the assassin as the blade was about to fall. The knife grazed her side, causing pain to burst, but she continued. As she called forth an unexplainable force, her silver eyes sparkled.
A shockwave exploded from her body, sending the assassin flying into a stone pillar as the air around her crackled. The audience turned to look at her, and silence descended.
Rex's golden eyes widened in surprise as his sight met hers. Then his face changed, and his eyes flashed with something primordial.
Like a steel trap, the bond slammed into position.
Luna staggered back, whispering, "No."
The mark of the mate bond blazed like fire into her flesh, burning into her chest.
"Stop!" Rex yelled and moved in her direction.
However, Luna was unable to breathe. She was unable to think. Her lifelong struggle to break free from the link she had vowed never to embrace had returned to haunt her.
Her sixth mate was Rex Reign.
He yelled, "Luna, hold on!" But she had already started to run. Her head a whirl of bewilderment and terror, her pulse pounding, she vanished into the forest.
Rex stood motionless in the courtyard, his hand still extended. He looked down at his arm's flaming mark, which was the same as the one that was currently burning on Luna's.
He said, "She's my mate," with a tone of astonishment and resolve. Then he turned to his guards, his jaw clenched.
"Seek her out," he ordered. "Return her to me."
However, Rex knew in his heart that it wouldn't be that easy. He had never had a bond like this, and Luna Skyheart was no ordinary woman.

The Lycan kingdom was bathed in a silvery radiance as the moon hung low in the sky. The castle stood out in the distance like a silent sentinel, and the forest murmured as the wind twisted its way through the tall trees. Standing on the edge of the woods, Luna Skyheart's breath came in slow, shallow gasps. Her palm gripped around the hilt of the knife at her side, the cold steel a reminder of how far she had gone in her attempts to protect herself from the world.
It had been barely hours since the summit-hours before the link had revealed itself in the most unexpected, and probably most unwelcome, way. Luna could still feel the burn of the connection, a tether that had hooked onto her essence and would not let go. It was unbreakable and indisputable, regardless of how much she tried to make it go away or how much she fought against it.
Luna had no interest in the mate bond.
It was a long-standing curse that she had previously experienced five times. The connection had been severed each time by treachery, desertion, and finally, death. She couldn't handle the pain of losing someone who was meant to be her other half. She had promised herself that she would never experience such suffering again. Because the gods seemed to play cruel tricks on her emotions, she would never trust fate, destiny, or either of them.
However, her sixth link had now selected the one individual she could not have foreseen.
King Rex Reign.
The Lycan King was everything Luna had learnt to avoid. He was invincible, strong, and in charge. His name was uttered with equal parts terror and awe as he controlled with an iron fist. Luna saw a weakness beneath that dominant presence, though, a man who had seen too much, lost too much, and yet bore the burden of the world.
And now she was bound to him by fate.
She had witnessed the expression of surprise and amazement that had crossed his face as the relationship had materialised. Nor had he anticipated it. Despite his immense authority and command over his realm, the Lycan King had never been ready for the unpredictable nature of fate. Something had happened between them, a sort of recognition, as his eyes had met hers. But before he could say anything, before he could attempt to explain what all of this meant, Luna had turned and run away.
She was unwilling to listen to it. Anything that would imply that she was destined to be with him was something she didn't want to hear. She had experienced too much to allow herself to get caught up in yet another failed relationship.
But now she was hidden in the darkness of the forest, feeling the invisible tug of the bond intensifying every minute. Her heart was constantly tugged, as though Rex were calling to her just by being there. Her jaw tight, she moved away from the castle, her feet scuffing into the undergrowth.
Her mind was a whirlpool of opposing feelings. This was not what she wanted. This is not what she could want. Nevertheless, she could sense the tie getting stronger the more she attempted to ignore it. Despite her inability to accept it, it seemed as though her body was tuned to Rex and reacting to the bond's power.
She had always been independent and self-sufficient. She didn't need anyone, not even a king. Not even him.
Luna steadied herself with a deep breath. She had to leave. She had to break free from the bond's hold before it engulfed her completely.
However, the distinct sound of activity behind her disrupted her thoughts as she pushed through the jungle. Her senses went into overdrive as she froze. Her body tensed as she braced herself for whatever threat could be hiding in the darkness, and her hand automatically moved to the blade by her side.
From behind her came a voice, deep, authoritative, and unmistakable.
"Luna."
A beat skipped across her heart. That voice was familiar to her.
Rex.
She didn't look back. She was unable to.
With a gentle yet firm tone, he stated, "I know you're there." "You can't avoid me indefinitely."
A wave of frustration swept through Luna. She had no desire to be sought after or discovered. She had stated unequivocally that she did not desire this bond. Why was he unable to comprehend that?
She called back. "Go away, Rex," her voice firm in spite of the chaos roiling inside her. "This is not what I want. I'm not interested in you.
After a little silence, Luna heard his footsteps approaching. She gritted her teeth and forced herself to stay composed, not turning around as he drew closer, his presence looming behind her.
"I don't care what you want," he murmured softly. "I'm not leaving until we talk."
Anger and terror surged through Luna's veins as her heart pounded in her chest. He had no right to pursue her after she had made it apparent that she didn't want to be involved with him. However, she was unable to ignore the impact his comments had on her. It was hard to ignore his presence, his drive.
With hatred in her voice, she spat, "I don't care what you have to say." "You believe that some link or some fate will allow you to simply claim me? Rex, you're mistaken. I am different from the others. I will not allow you to pull me into this mess, whatever it may be.
His footsteps came to a halt, and they were silent for a while. Then Rex spoke again, in a lower voice that had a hint of something Luna couldn't quite identify.
He added, "You don't understand," with a weight Luna hadn't anticipated. There is more to this tie than fate. It concerns us. about our potential together.
At his words, Luna's chest constricted. She refused to believe him and to admit the glimmer of hope that lingered within her in spite of her denial.
"You are not familiar with me," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "You can't possibly understand what I've experienced." I cannot just depend on this. You are not trustworthy.
After a lengthy silence, Rex resumed his speech, his tone calm but with a hint of quiet intensity.
"I don't require your trust," he declared. However, I need you to have faith in the link and in us. Luna, I'm not able to express it. However, I secretly know that this is our opportunity. Our journey to bigger things is paved by this link. It will rip us apart if we don't accept it and face what is coming together.
His words weighed heavily on Luna, causing her heart to race in her chest. She desired to escape the bond that bound her to him, to run away from the connection. However, she hesitated because of an internal resistance to that need.
"Why now?" Her voice was no more than a whisper when she requested. "Why me?"
Rex said quietly, but with a determination that caught her off guard.
He explained, "Because I've been waiting for you my entire life." "And I'll wait until you realise that we are meant to be together, however long that may take."
Her breath caught in Luna's throat. She had not anticipated or even wanted to accept the seriousness of his statements.
However, a startling stirring in the trees interrupted her before she could reply. Luna's body tensed as she pivoted towards the sound, her hand going for her dagger as her instincts took over. Rex stepped closer, his posture commanding and alert, his presence suddenly protective as he stood by her side.
His voice was low and harsh as he whispered, "Stay behind me."
Luna had no time to object. Dark shapes with glowing eyes and malevolent purpose loomed out of the shadows. Danger seemed to come alive in the jungle.
Rex snarled, his muscles tensing up as he readied himself for battle.
Luna experienced the well-known adrenaline surge as her body prepared for combat. There was no time to reflect or ask questions. She confronted the menace head-on, her dagger glittering in the moonlight as she moved precisely.
Luna's mind briefly changed in the middle of the confusion. One thing Rex was correct about. There was no denying their relationship. And she would eventually have to confront it, no matter how hard she battled against it or tried to avoid it.
But for now, she would fight.
For herself.
For her future.
And for the kingdom that relied on them both.
Once again, the forest was still, but there was a sense of unease in the silence. Luna and Rex were standing among the shattered remains of the dark monsters that had attacked them after the combat was over. Heavy with effort and unsaid words, their breaths mixed in the chilly night air.
Luna avoided looking at Rex as she wiped her sword clean on the hem of her cloak. She detested the way his presence seemed to heighten her senses and arouse something within her. The tie still felt like a noose tightening around her throat, even though she had battled beside him. Luna broke the silence by whispering,
She said, "I didn't need your help," and she tucked her dagger in.
The moonlight dimly illuminated Rex's golden eyes as he straightened. "I wasn't assisting you." I was watching out for us.
The cool, authoritative tone of his voice irritated her. Her fists clenched as she pivoted to face him. "There is no 'us,'" Rex said. This bond was not requested, and I most definitely do not want it.
Rex moved in closer, his massive body looming over her. He surprised her by admitting, "Neither did I." But avoiding it won't make the past go away. Yes, Luna, the bond is real. whether or not you desire it.
Luna clenched her jaw. You don't think I'm aware of that? This is the fifth time I've gone through it. I understand how it begins and ends.
The weight of her past seemed to bear down on them both for a while as her words lingered in the air. Rex's countenance softened, but he remained resolute.
His voice had become calmer, almost compassionate, as he said, "You've been hurt." However, Luna, you are not alone in having scars. Please do not assume that I am insensitive to pain.
Luna snorted. You? What about a king who has it all? What knowledge of pain could you possibly possess?
The tension in the air between them seemed to crackle as Rex's eyes darkened. With a deep growl, he said, "You think that being king means that I have been spared hardship?" "Are you familiar with the experience of burying your father and ascending to the throne as your adversaries swarm about you like vultures? To see those you love turn on you for personal benefit? Every choice I make has the consequences of a whole kingdom. I still get up every day and take care of my responsibilities.
The unadulterated passion in his voice took Luna by surprise. For a brief moment, she saw the man beneath the crown rather than the unbeatable king-a man who, like her, had been moulded by duty and loss.
She added, "I didn't ask for your pity," but her voice was not as sharp as normal.
"And I don't want yours," Rex answered. Yet don't presume you are familiar with me. Similarly, I won't presume to know you.
Heart thumping in her chest, Luna turned away. He said something that struck a chord with her, and she wanted to argue and push him away. She had surrounded herself with barriers for years, protecting her heart from the hurt of being connected. Here was Rex, though, eroding those boundaries with each look and every word.
She abruptly said, "I have to leave," as she began to head for the woods.
Rex's words trailed her like a shadow, but he didn't stop her. "Luna, you can run. However, the bond will track you down. It always does.
--------
Luna moved swiftly and deliberately as she ventured farther into the forest. Long shadows were produced on the ground as the moonlight penetrated through the trees. In an attempt to block out the echo of Rex's remarks, she tried to concentrate on the sound of her boots crunching against the leaves.
She detested the way he had irritated her and caused her to experience emotions she had long since buried. The link served as a reminder of the gods' perverse sense of humour and a cruel jest. After all the times it had let her down, how could she trust it?
Her thoughts strayed to her past partners-the loss, the heartache, the betrayal. She was even more shattered than before because every bond had ended tragically. Now, destiny had tethered her to a king, a man whose life was full of intrigue and peril. A man who can prove to be her greatest ally or her downfall.
To counter the thoughts, she shook her head. Right now, she couldn't afford to let her guard down. Never.
However, she sensed someone following her when she came to a little clearing. She knew who it was without turning around.
She remarked sarcastically, "I'll give you that you're persistent."
Despite his intimidating bulk, Rex moved gracefully as he entered the clearing. "And you're unyielding," he shot back. However, I'm not here to debate.
Luna's eyebrow went up. "So, why have you come here?"
"To speak," he said plainly. "And, if you don't mind, to listen."
Scepticism imprinted on her face, she folded her arms across her chest. "All right. Speak.
Rex inhaled deeply while maintaining eye contact with her. "Luna, I don't expect you to believe me. Not quite yet. But there's something I need you to comprehend. It's not just about us, this link. It has to do with something greater. Neither of us is entirely aware of the dynamics at work here.
Luna squinted her eyes. "What are you talking about?"
After a moment of hesitation, he spoke. "It wasn't a random attack at the peak. Someone knew exactly what they were doing when they planned it. They were after me-and, I assume, you-but they were aiming for the Council.
"Me?" Luna scowled. "What makes me the target of anyone? I am no one.
Rex shook his head. "You underestimate yourself. That wasn't your typical power to save me. Even I had never seen anything so old before. And it's connected to the bond, I believe.
The breath caught in Luna's throat. The rush, the unadulterated strength that had flowed through her veins, she had experienced it too. But she had written it down as nothing more than adrenaline. Her tone was defensive as she uttered,
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
Rex stepped forward, looking into her eyes. "Luna, you can choose to ignore the reality, but it is there. Regardless of your opinion, we are all in this together.
Luna averted her gaze as her thoughts raced. She refused to accept that her life was once more being controlled by forces outside of her control and refused to believe him. But she knew in her heart that he was correct.
"Why me?" More to herself than to him, she murmured.
Rex said in a quiet but firm voice. "Because you underestimate your own strength." And because we have been selected by the gods for whatever reason.
Luna fought back the flood of emotions that threatened to overtake her as she closed her eyes. This was not what she desired. He was not what she wanted. However, the pulsing connection between them served as a continual reminder of what might be-should she dare to take the chance.
She opened her eyes to find Rex still staring at her, his face unreadable. She noticed the man for the first time instead of the monarch. For a brief instant, she pondered whether she could possibly trust him.
However, it was more difficult to tear down the barriers surrounding her emotions.
At last, she answered in a firm voice, "We'll see." "But don't count on me to make this simple."
Rex's mouth curled into a little, sly smile. "I'd never consider it." And the connection between them hummed with silent intensity as they stood in the moonlit clearing, a promise of what was to come.
