The Second Chance Citadel

Author: : Qing Gongzi
Genre: Modern
The Citadel' s emergency comms system exploded with red alerts. I was at my post, ready to defend, until I saw the man I loved, Matthew, my fiancé, leading his entire elite team off-campus for a supposed "training exercise." It was a lie orchestrated by his obsession with Sabrina, the newest recruit they were celebrating in downtown. In another life, I' d chased after them, only to witness Sabrina' s capture and execution, leading Matthew' s grief-fueled rage to turn on me, ultimately putting a bullet in my head. This time, I stayed, determined to change our fate, but Matthew' s arrogance and blinding infatuation led to a new nightmare. He cut me off, refused to believe the attack was real, clinging to his misplaced trust in Sabrina while the Citadel fell, his mother Maria captured and later brutally killed. Then came the accusation, an echo of my past: Matthew, again consumed by rage and manipulated by Scythe' s lies, aimed his gun at me, blaming me for his mother's death. Why did he always fall for the trap? How could he be so blind? But then, a loyal junior agent burst in, exposing Sabrina as the hidden daughter of Scythe' s leader, the true mole who poisoned our team. As Matthew' s world shattered, his father, Director Lester, stepped in, putting a decisive end to Sabrina' s treachery. Now, I'm back, armed with knowledge of betrayal and a second chance, tasked with rebuilding the Citadel from ashes. But the phantom pain of Matthew' s first betrayal and the searing memory of his bullet still haunt me.

Introduction

The Citadel' s emergency comms system exploded with red alerts.

I was at my post, ready to defend, until I saw the man I loved, Matthew, my fiancé, leading his entire elite team off-campus for a supposed "training exercise."

It was a lie orchestrated by his obsession with Sabrina, the newest recruit they were celebrating in downtown.

Chapter 1

The Citadel' s emergency comms system exploded with red alerts. The noise was a high-pitched scream that cut through the quiet of the main operations center.

I saw the first breach on the primary monitor, a spiderweb of corrupted code spreading through our outer defenses. It was Scythe. I knew their signature.

But the elite response team wasn't here. They were gone.

My senior agent, Matthew Lester, my fiancé, had taken the entire unit off-campus. He told his mother, Deputy Director Maria Lester, that it was a last-minute, high-stakes training exercise.

It was a lie.

They were in the city, at a fancy downtown restaurant, celebrating the birthday of Sabrina Chavez, the newest recruit. A girl who looked like she couldn't hurt a fly, who cried if you raised your voice. A girl Matthew had become completely obsessed with.

In another life, I chased after them. I remember it clearly, a memory seared into my soul. I had burst into that restaurant, screaming about the attack.

Sabrina had looked terrified. She' d been "captured" in the chaos that followed. Later, Scythe sent back a video of her execution.

Matthew, broken by grief, had turned on me. He' d screamed that it was my fault, that my jealousy had led Scythe right to her. He put a bullet in my head himself.

Then, I woke up. Back here, on this day, with the alarms just starting to blare.

This time, I wasn't running to them. This time, I was staying to defend my post. This time, things would be different.

I grabbed the internal line and called the Deputy Director' s office. Maria answered on the first ring, her voice tight.

"Jocelyn, what's happening? The board is lit up."

"Ma'am, it's a full-scale assault. Scythe is hitting us with everything they have."

I took a breath. "Matthew and the team are not on a training exercise. They lied. They're in the city for Sabrina Chavez's birthday party."

There was a dead silence on the line. I could feel Maria' s fury radiating through the phone. She had always treated me like a daughter, but she was the Deputy Director first. Duty came before everything.

"I'll handle my son," she said, her voice like ice. "You hold your position, Agent Hewitt. Do not let them through."

The line went dead. I knew she was calling Matthew, and I knew exactly what he would say.

Chapter 2

My comm unit crackled to life a few minutes later. It was Matthew, patching in from his personal device.

"Jocelyn, what the hell do you think you're doing?"

His voice was laced with annoyance, not alarm. He wasn't taking this seriously.

"There's an attack, Matthew. Scythe is breaching the perimeter."

I heard music and laughter in the background. The party was still going.

"Cut the crap," he snapped. "I just got off the phone with my mother. You're making up stories because you're jealous of Sabrina. It's pathetic."

"This isn't a story. Look at the network status."

"I don't need to," he said, his voice dripping with arrogance. "I have my own intel. Scythe's leadership is in the middle of a power struggle. They're in no position to attack. Besides, I reinforced the firewalls myself last week. They're impenetrable."

He actually believed that. In my past life, he'd said the same thing. His pride was his greatest weakness.

"You need to get the team back here now," I pleaded, my voice tight.

"The only thing I need to do is make sure Sabrina has a happy birthday without you trying to ruin it. Stop calling. We're busy."

He cut the connection.

I stood there, frozen for a second, the memory of his gun against my forehead so real I could almost feel the cold metal.

Then, a new, more terrifying alarm began to sound. A deep, resonating tone that meant only one thing: a core system breach.

On the main screen, a single word flashed in blood-red text: PROMETHEUS.

It was our master decryption key, a piece of Citadel tech so powerful it could unlock any digital defense on the planet. It had been stolen six months ago. Scythe was using our own weapon against us.

Maria' s voice came over the main comms, strained and urgent.

"Jocelyn, they have Prometheus. They're inside the network. I need you to retrieve the Director. Now."

My blood ran cold. The Director, Brian Lester, Matthew's father, was deep undercover. His location was the most guarded secret in the agency. To pull him out meant his mission, and possibly his life, was forfeit.

"Ma'am, are you sure?"

"There's no choice," she said, her voice grim. "I'll hold the line here. Go. That's an order."
