The Scapegoat's Return

Author: : Sibeal Sallese
Genre: Xuanhuan
Halloween night in the mortal world. The Rift, our fleeting portal between the Shadowlands and their realm, was closing fast. Spirits around me scrambled, desperate to return. But not Chloe. She stood at its edge, Ectoplasmic Flames – her rare, ghostly green power – roaring from her palms, forcing it open. She was buying time. For him. Liam. My gut twisted. Not with worry, but with a chilling sense of déjà vu. This was precisely how it all unfurled in my previous life, my destiny intertwined with her misguided devotion to him. A devotion that led directly to my destruction. I remembered every horrifying detail. Chloe, then my girlfriend, screaming accusations, blaming me for Liam's end, as she led the Enforcers straight to me. Right when I was on the brink of ascending to Arch-Spirit. The Enforcers didn't care for truth; they simply tore me apart. To be annihilated, merely a scapegoat for her idolized fool. The betrayal, the agony, burned as fresh as ever. Why did she always choose him? Why did I have to suffer for their toxic dance, not once, but twice? But now, I was back. Reborn to this exact crossroads, this critical choice. To everyone else, I was just a low-ranking Patroller. Good. Let them underestimate me. Because I understood one thing perfectly: I had a new plan. A painful, meticulous plan. This time, they would both pay.

Chapter 1

The air in the mortal world always felt thin, almost sharp, on Halloween night.

It was the one night the Rift between our Shadowlands and their realm stayed open late, a messy, shimmering tear in reality.

Now, it was shrinking fast.

Spirits scrambled, a panicked mob of translucent figures, desperate to get back before dawn.

Dawn in the mortal world meant oblivion for any of us caught out.

But Chloe stood at the Rift' s edge, her hands outstretched, Ectoplasmic Flame roaring from her palms.

The fire, a brilliant, ghostly green, pushed back against the closing portal, holding it open.

She was buying time.

For him. Liam.

My gut twisted. Not with concern, not anymore.

This was how it began last time. Her devotion to Liam, my destruction.

I remembered it all, every detail of my previous existence, my past life.

Chloe, my girlfriend then, leading the Enforcers to me, right when I was about to ascend to Arch-Spirit.

Her screams, accusing me of causing Liam' s end.

The Enforcers didn't care for truth, only for a scapegoat.

They tore me apart.

Now, I was back. Reborn to this exact moment, this exact choice.

A low-ranking Patroller, that' s what they all saw. That' s what Chloe saw.

Good.

"Chloe, you have to let it close!" a spirit shrieked near her, his form flickering.

"He' s almost here! I can feel it!" Chloe yelled back, her voice strained, the green flames wavering but holding.

Other spirits groaned, some cursed her.

I stepped forward, my Patroller' s uniform plain, unremarkable.

"She' s right to wait," I said, my voice calm, projecting just enough for those nearby to hear.

The spirits near me stared, aghast.

"Ethan, are you insane?" one of them, a nervous fellow named Pip, whispered. "We' ll all be dust!"

Chloe glanced at me, a flicker of surprise, maybe even gratitude, in her eyes.

She probably thought I was still the same loyal fool.

"He understands," she said, turning back to her desperate task.

I understood, alright. I understood I had a new plan.

This time, they would pay. Not just Liam. Chloe too.

The Rift groaned, a sound like tearing fabric, and shrank another foot.

The raw energy of it buffeted us.

Chloe' s flames intensified, a desperate, beautiful display of her rare power.

She was strong, I' d give her that. Misguided, but strong.

I watched her, my face carefully neutral.

Inside, I was counting down.

Let her wait. Let him come.

Let them seal their own fate.

Chapter 2

The first rays of dawn were painting the distant horizon a sickly yellow when Liam finally stumbled through the thinning crowd.

He looked like hell, even for a spirit.

His form was dim, flickering badly, and he clutched a small, tarnished silver locket in one hand.

A memento from the mortal world. Idiot.

Those things drained you, tethered you, made you weak.

"Chloe!" he gasped, his voice thin.

Chloe' s head snapped towards him, relief flooding her face.

"Liam! I knew you' d make it!"

She dropped her hands, and the Ectoplasmic Flame died instantly.

The Rift, free of her restraint, slammed shut with a deafening WHOOMP.

A wave of despair washed over the remaining spirits.

Then, the sun crested the horizon.

Screams.

Pure, unadulterated terror.

Spirits caught in the direct light began to smoke, their forms dissolving like sugar in water.

Chloe grabbed Liam, pulling him into the shadow of a tall building.

I' d already positioned myself there, Pip cowering beside me.

"What have you done?" a spirit shrieked at Liam, his edges already fraying. "Because of your trinket, we' re all doomed!"

Liam flinched, looking guiltily at the locket. "It was my mother' s... I couldn' t leave it."

Sentimental fool.

Chloe rounded on the accusing spirit. "Shut up! It' s not his fault!"

Her eyes, though, darted around, fear finally dawning.

"There has to be a way back," she muttered, more to herself than anyone.

Then she looked at me. "Ethan. You' re a Patroller. You know things. How do we get back?"

Here we go.

I feigned thought. "The Rift is sealed until next year. We' re trapped."

Panic rippled through the small group of survivors huddled in the shadows.

"No!" Chloe insisted. Then, her eyes lit up. "Wait! The Beacon Charm!"

She fumbled at her neck, pulling out a small, intricately carved bone charm.

I recognized it. I' d given it to her, back when I still cared.

Back when I was a fool.

"This can call a Harbinger, right?" she asked, looking at me, desperate for confirmation.

I nodded slowly. "It can. But Harbingers are... particular. And it only works at midnight."

"Midnight! We have to wait until midnight?" Pip wailed.

"It' s better than dissolving," Chloe snapped. She held the charm aloft. "We have a way out. We just need to be careful until then."

Liam leaned against her, looking relieved. "You always know what to do, Chloe."

She preened a little, even in this mess.

I kept my face impassive.

The Beacon Charm. She had no idea.

I' d crafted it myself, long ago, when I was already a Marshal.

It wasn' t just a beacon. It was a tether.

And the Harbinger it called would answer to me, and only me.

"We need to find a safe place," Chloe announced, taking charge. "And... we need to stay strong."

I saw a predatory gleam in Liam' s eyes.

"Vital essence," he murmured. "The living are full of it."

Chloe hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Just a little. To keep our strength up. We can' t fade before the Harbinger comes."

They were already justifying it. Perfect.

They wandered off, Chloe supporting the weakened Liam, looking for unsuspecting mortals.

Pip looked at me, horrified. "They' re going to drain humans? That creates Spiritual Taint! The Harbingers will refuse them!"

"Perhaps," I said, my voice flat.

Let them dig their own graves.

I settled back into the shadows, conserving my energy.

My plan was unfolding beautifully.

They thought they had hope.

They had no idea they were already dancing on my strings.
