I had been married to George Norris for ten years. To everyone, we were a perfect couple. But everything changed after my beloved Timothy, Timothy Mills, suddenly passed away after he underwent a successful surgery. I was sad, but at the same time, I realized something was amiss. To quell my suspicion, I reviewed the hospital room's surveillance footage the night he passed away. In the footage, Timothy had rung the bell for help three times, but George ignored it. Instead, he made out with an intern nurse in the treatment room. He said to the nurse, "Don't worry, he won't survive tonight." In that moment, my decade-long love and trust were shattered completely. I wiped away my tears and dialed my grandfather's number, which I hadn't called in ten years. "Karl, ten years have passed, and it's time to end our agreement."

Chapter 1

I had been married to George Norris for ten years. To everyone, we were a perfect couple.

But everything changed after my beloved mentor, Timothy Mills, suddenly passed away after he underwent a successful surgery.

He said to the nurse, "Don't worry, he won't survive tonight."

In that moment, my decade-long love and trust were shattered completely.

I wiped away my tears and dialed my grandfather's number, which I hadn't called in ten years. "Karl, ten years have passed, and it's time to end our agreement."

...

With the copied video, I stormed into George's office.

He was in a meeting with several doctors. Upon seeing me, he frowned. "Julia? What's wrong?"

His concern made me nauseous.

I walked up to him and slapped him hard.

The crisp sound echoed in the office.

The other doctors there were stunned.

George clutched his face and looked at me in disbelief. "Julia, have you gone mad?"

"Am I mad?" I sneered. "George, where were you between eight and nine yesterday evening?"

His eyes flickered for a moment before he regained his composure. "I was on duty. Why?"

"Really?" I waved the flash drive. "Shall I show everyone how you were on duty back then?"

George's face turned pale immediately.

But he suddenly calmed down and smiled eerily. "Julia, what are you trying to say?"

"What am I trying to say?" I laughed coldly. "George, you know it very well."

I raised the flash drive for all the other doctors to see. "Last night, when Professor Mills passed away, Dr. George Norris was not on duty but was busy making out with a nurse in the treatment room. Professor Mills rang the bell three times, but no one showed up."

The other doctors were shocked.

George suddenly stood up and looked at me coldly. "Julia, I know you're grieving Professor Mills's passing, but you can't talk nonsense."

"Am I talking nonsense?" I plugged the flash drive into the computer in the conference room.

But when I opened the file, the screen displayed that the file could not be played.

I was stunned.

How could that be?

George saw my expression and smirked triumphantly. "Julia, look. The video can't even be played. What else do you want to say?"

I was unwilling to give up and tried several times, but the file was indeed damaged. "That's impossible. It was fine a moment ago."

George approached me and said in a low voice that only the two of us could hear, "Julia, did you really think I would leave you any incriminating evidence? I'm far more familiar with the hospital's surveillance system than you are."

I trembled as I stared at him.

He was no longer the one I knew.

He returned to his seat and wore his gentle expression again. "Everyone, Julie is emotionally overwhelmed due to the shock of Timothy's death. Please forgive her."

The other doctors nodded and looked at me with sympathetic eyes.

George suddenly took out a document and tossed it onto the table. "However, since Julia mentioned Timothy's death, I think some things do need clarification."

A foreboding feeling rose in my heart.

"Yesterday's surgery did have some problems." George's voice turned serious. "Doctor Julia Walsh didn't follow the surgical plan."

"What?" I couldn't believe my ears.

George continued, "She used an unverified material called Walsh Sutures, which directly led to the patient's post-operative infection."

"You're lying." I stood up, agitated. "You asked me to use it. You said the material might have groundbreaking results."

"Do you have evidence?" George asked coldly.

"I do. You sent me an email authorizing it."

I logged in to my email with my phone.

But as I searched through all my emails, I couldn't find the authorization email George had sent me.

"Impossible... It was right here..." My hands trembled as I kept refreshing my inbox.

At that moment, George logged in to his email with his phone. "Julia, look. There's no such email in my email either."

Just then, the conference room door opened.

Madeline Oliver walked in. Her eyes were red, and she looked delicate and pitiful. "Director Norris, I heard Doctor Walsh is slandering you."

She stood in front of me, and tears streamed down her cheeks. "Doctor Walsh, I know you're grieving Professor Mills's death, but you can't slander Director Norris just because you're jealous of me for being younger than you."

"Am I jealous of you?" I sneered. "Madeline, do you know what you're saying?"

"Of course, I do." Madeline wiped away her tears and continued, "You've been targeting me recently. You gave me the most exhausting tasks and often criticized me in front of other nurses. Now you're fabricating baseless stories to tarnish Director Norris's name because you're afraid that he'll divorce you for me."

As soon as Madeline finished speaking, whispers filled the conference room.

I looked around and saw that everyone's gaze at me had changed from sympathy to suspicion and disdain.

George sighed, "Julia, we've been married for ten years. How can you not trust me?"

He sounded hurt and disappointed.

Just then, the director of the hospital, Karson Norris, walked in.

My heart sank.

Karson was George's father. I knew the situation would be tougher for me. "What's going on? I could hear the commotion from outside."

George immediately stood up respectfully. "Dad, it's like this..."

He recounted the events. Of course, he painted a version favorable to him.

After listening, Karson looked at me with a grim expression. "Julia, the evidence is clear. What do you have to say for yourself?"

"I'm not lying. George did."

"Enough!" Karson slammed the table. "Julia, as the director, I now announce that you are suspended pending further investigation."

My world collapsed in an instant.

I had been a doctor for ten years, but it was all destroyed in an instant.

Chapter 2

I didn't give up after I was suspended.

I started reaching out to other medical staff in the operating room and hoped someone would testify for me.

However, everyone used the same excuse to brush me off.

"I don't remember."

"Please don't make it difficult for me."

Even the nurse, who usually had the best relationship with me, said coldly, "Julia, let it go. Stop struggling."

Just when I was feeling utterly hopeless, George appeared in front of me.

He sighed and reached out to touch my face.

I quickly backed away. "Don't touch me!"

"Julia, are you still upset with me?" George's voice carried a hint of grievance. "I didn't want it to be like this. But you've made too much of a fuss."

"Really?" I sneered, "George, did I make it too much, or are you feeling guilty?"

His eyes flickered for a moment, but he quickly returned to normal. "See? You're imagining things again."

"George, stop pretending." I said coldly, "You think you can cover everything after erasing the surveillance footage? I will find evidence to prove your crime."

Upon hearing my words, George stopped looking tender instantly. "Julia, do you really want to be so stubborn? Consider our family and our son. Can't you reconsider your stance? If you admit your mistake, I'll find a way to give you lighter punishment. But if you continue causing trouble, it won't do anyone any good."

I looked at him and felt an overwhelming sense of desolation. "George, you are daydreaming."

I turned to leave, but George called after me. "Julia, think it over. If you really end up in jail, what will happen to Kaiden?"

My steps faltered.

That evening, I was alone at home and went through Timothy's documents in the hope that I could find some clues.

As I was engrossed, the doorbell rang.

Karson appeared at the door with two burly men.

"Julia, we need to talk." Karson's voice was icy.

I instinctively tried to close the door, but the two men blocked it.

"There's five million dollars. Take the money and admit it was your mistake that led to the patient's death."

I looked at the bank card and sneered, "Director Norris, do you really think money can solve everything?"

I picked up the bank card and threw it directly at his face. "I don't need your dirty money. Karson, George killed Timothy. Do you want me to take the fall for him now? In your dreams!"

Karson's face twisted with rage upon being hit with the bank card. "Julia, refusing a kind offer only to face harsher consequences. George's future is a thousand times more important than your innocence. Since you don't know how to appreciate favors, don't blame me for being ruthless."

He signaled to the two men behind him.

They immediately stepped forward and grabbed my arms from both sides.

"What are you doing? Release me." I struggled desperately but couldn't break free.

Karson walked to the balcony and then came back with a steel pipe used for hanging clothes.

He stood before me and sneered, "Julia, aren't you proud of your surgical skills?" I'll make you never pick up a scalpel again."

I stared at the steel pipe in his hand and was overwhelmed by terror. "Karson, you wouldn't dare."

"What wouldn't I dare?" He raised the steel pipe and aimed at my right hand. "A doctor who can't perform surgery is useless."

"Bang!" The steel pipe slammed down on my right hand.

The excruciating pain made my vision go black.

In a daze, I heard Karson's voice as he left. "This is the consequence of your arrogance. You'd better cooperate obediently at tomorrow's press conference. Otherwise, I won't just break your hand."

After they left, George called me. "Julia, I hope my father's discussion earlier has taught you a lesson." George's voice was icy. "The hospital will hold a press conference tomorrow at two in the afternoon. You'd better show up on time. If you dare call the police, Kaiden will..."

Chapter 3

I went to the hospital alone to treat my injuries.

The X-ray showed a comminuted fracture in my right hand.

"Dr. Walsh, your injury is severe. Even if it heals, your ability to perform delicate operations will be greatly reduced."

I understood what he meant.

My dream of being a surgeon would be over.

Just as I was in despair, George appeared in the hospital room.

He was holding our five-year-old son, Kaiden Norris.

"Mommy. Mommy." Kaiden rushed into my arms. When he saw my right hand wrapped in bandages, tears immediately welled up in his eyes.

"Mommy, what happened to your hand? Does it hurt?"

I looked at his innocent face and was heartbroken. "It's okay. It doesn't hurt."

George stood by and gave a smile. "Kaiden, tell Mommy, do you want her to come home?"

Kaiden nodded vigorously. "Yes! I want Mom to come home."

George bent down and softly touched Kaiden's hair. "Then if Mommy made a mistake, shouldn't she bravely admit it?"

Kaiden didn't understand the complicated adult world. He just nodded with childlike sincerity. "Mommy, the teacher says if one makes a mistake, he'd better admit it. Then he can be forgiven."

George looked at me and gave me a smug smile. "Julia, did you hear that? Even Kaiden hopes you'll admit your mistake. As long as you do what I say at the press conference, our family can start anew. I'll find a way to get you a lighter sentence, at most probation, without jail time."

I looked at Kaiden in my arms and hesitated.

If I didn't compromise, what awaited me?

Would I be put in jail?

Or would I even face harsher retribution?

And Kaiden was just a five-year-old boy. What would he face because of my stubbornness? "Mommy, are you and Dad getting a divorce?" Kaiden suddenly asked. "Shawn, my friend in my class, said that after his mommy and daddy divorced, he couldn't see his mommy anymore. Mommy, please don't leave me. Okay?"

Kaiden's words pierced my heart deeply.

George interjected at just the right moment. "Julia, for Kaiden's sake, just give in this time. I promise, our family can go back to how it was as long as you cooperate with me."

I closed my eyes and felt Kaiden's warmth in my arms. "Okay." I struggled to utter the sentence, "I agree."

George's face lit up with satisfaction. "That's the right decision. I've already prepared the speech for you. Just read it as it is."

He took out a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to me.

I glanced at it. It described the "facts" of how I made a mistake during surgery and caused Timothy's death.

Each word stabbed at my heart.

At two in the afternoon, the press conference proceeded as scheduled.

Karson, as the director, spoke first. He expressed the hospital's concern over the "medical incident."

I held the script George wrote and began to read in a quivering voice. "I am Julia Walsh, and I bear inescapable responsibility for Mr. Timothy Mills's death. During the surgery, due to my personal..."

Below the stage, reporters were taking photos frantically. They seemed to be capturing the last moment of my life.

After reading the statement, the police approached as part of the procedure. They were to take me away.

Just then, Madeline suddenly appeared by my side.

She had a victorious smirk on her face. She pretended to support me with concern.

"Dr. Walsh, don't be too upset." Her voice was low and only audible to both of us. Do you think you will protect your son by doing this?"

I was stunned and looked at her.

Madeline leaned closer to my ear, and her voice dripped with malicious delight. "Let me tell you a secret. Your son died of asphyxiation at birth. Kaiden is the son of George and his first love, Gabriela Quinn. You stupid woman. You've raised her son for five years."
