Seraphina POV:
The first thing I felt was the burning in my lungs.
A brutal pressure crushed my windpipe, stealing the air. My vision pulsed with black spots, a frantic drumbeat pounding in my ears.
Through the watery blur, a face swam into focus. A face I knew better than my own, a face I had once loved with the foolish devotion of a destined mate.
Prince Valerius Kensington.
His handsome features were twisted into a mask of pure rage, his blue eyes blazing with a hatred that was chillingly familiar.
Then, the memories hit me. Not a trickle, but a tidal wave.
My last life. The birthing bed soaked in blood. The unbearable pain. His voice, cold and distant, telling the doctors to save the child, not me. And my stepsister, Isabelle, her face a mask of false sorrow as she held his hand.
They had murdered me.
And now, I was back. Reborn into the very moment of another betrayal.
"Monster!" Valerius snarled, his voice a low growl that vibrated through his hands into my throat. "You really thought you could tarnish Isabelle's pure name with your cursed body?"
Isabelle. Of course. She had played the victim again, and this Alpha fool had swallowed every lie.
My fingernails dug into his forearms, drawing blood. I thrashed, but it was useless. I was an Omega. Against his Alpha strength, I was nothing more than a doll to be broken.
The darkness was closing in again, the cold shadow of death I remembered all too well.
No. I couldn't die again.
My mother, Eleonora. In my last life, she died shortly after me, her death ruled a complication from "grief." I had to get back to her. I had to save her.
Begging him was pointless. So I stopped fighting. My body went limp, then began to twitch in a grotesque, unnatural way. A white foam gathered at the corner of my mouth.
Valerius flinched, his grip loosening fractionally at the sight. It was unexpected. It was wrong.
I used the sliver of air he allowed me, forcing two words from my raw throat.
"The... silver..."
As a Healer, one of the best, I knew things. I knew how a precise mixture of harmless herbs could perfectly mimic the initial symptoms of silver poisoning. I was betting my life that this pampered prince knew nothing of toxicology.
His face went pale. Silver. The ultimate poison to our kind, a substance so deadly its use was controlled by the Alpha King himself.
He ripped his hands away from my neck as if he'd been burned. He stared at his own palms, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his inner wolf panicking at the mere suggestion of contamination.
I collapsed onto the plush carpet, sucking in a ragged, life-giving breath, but I kept my body convulsing, playing my part.
"What did you do?" he roared, his voice laced with a new emotion. Not just disgust. Fear. "You lunatic!"
I pushed myself up weakly, letting the dim light catch the ugly, puckered scar on my cheek-a mark left by a silver dagger years ago. A constant reminder of my family's shame.
A cold smile touched my lips. "You've always hated this scar, haven't you? Now you get a taste of it yourself."
I deliberately dragged my fingernails, the ones that had drawn his blood, across the back of his hand.
He recoiled as if struck by a viper. I saw the panic in his eyes as his own mind began to betray him. He imagined a burning sensation on his skin, a racing heart-the psychosomatic effects of pure terror.
For the first time, he looked at me with fear, not just loathing.
Good, I thought. This is the first payment on the debt you owe me.
I curled into a ball on the floor, my voice a venomous whisper only he could hear. "Want the antidote? You'll have to trade it for something you value more than anything."
He gritted his teeth, his jaw tight with fury. "What do you want?"
I looked up, meeting his terrified gaze, and spoke each word with chilling clarity.
"A formal, public Rejection."
His pupils shrank to pinpoints. To publicly reject a destined mate was a stain on an Alpha's honor, an admission of failure. It was a fate worse than a thousand duels.
He never expected this. He thought I would cling to him, beg for him.
I watched the war in his eyes, the battle between his pride and his fear, and a vicious pleasure surged through me.
My voice dropped, turning to ice. "That, or you can wait for the 'silver poison' to slowly corrupt your inner wolf. Until you're nothing but a powerless cripple."
His fists clenched, the sound of his knuckles cracking loud in the silent room. Murder flashed in his eyes, but he didn't dare step closer.
I had him. For now.
I closed my eyes, hiding the inferno of hatred within me, leaving only the cold, hard surface of my plan.
Valerius. Isabelle. The entire House of Beaumont.
I'm back.
He stared at me for a long, silent moment, his chest heaving. Then, with a final, guttural snarl, he turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the door so hard the walls shook. He was running to the royal physicians, desperate to confirm the poison I knew they would never find.
The room was silent. I was alone.
I dragged my aching body up from the floor and stumbled to the mirror.
The girl who stared back was a wreck. Pale face, wild silver hair, and that hideous scar, a twisted mockery of my past life's stupidity.
I pressed my hand against the cold glass, my fingers tracing the outline of my own haunted face.
"From this day on," I whispered to the reflection. "Seraphina Beaumont lives only for herself."
Seraphina POV:
I steadied myself against a heavy oak table, my body wracked with coughs that tore at my bruised throat. The phantom sensation of Valerius's hands was still there.
But there was no time for weakness.
Valerius would be back soon. The moment his physicians found no trace of silver, my bluff would be called. My life would be measured in minutes.
I needed two things before that happened: a formal Rejection and my dowry.
I moved to the bed and retrieved a small cloth pouch from beneath my pillow. It was always with me, filled with the tools of my trade. I tipped a fine powder onto my tongue and washed it down with a gulp of water from the carafe. The burning in my throat immediately began to subside. I was a Healer, and I would heal myself first.
A soft sound at the door made me freeze.
The door creaked open, and a young Omega girl with wide, worried eyes peeked in. Fern. My loyal maid.
"My lady, are you alright?" she whispered. "I heard the Prince... he sounded furious."
A wave of warmth cut through the ice in my veins. In my last life, Fern had died trying to protect me, beaten to death by Valerius's guards. That would not happen again.
"I'm fine," I said, my voice still raspy. I beckoned her inside. "Fern, I need you to do something for me, quickly and quietly. Go to the head steward. Tell him I am gravely ill and require Mrs. Adler's presence immediately."
Mrs. Adler was the keeper of my dowry, a woman loyal to my mother's family, House Sterling. She was my key to reclaiming my property.
Fern's brow furrowed in confusion, but she nodded without question. "Yes, my lady."
As she turned to leave, I stopped her. "Wait."
I opened my jewelry box and pulled out a heavy gold coin, pressing it into her hand. "After you deliver the message, do not come back here. Go to the city's main gate and wait for me. If I am not there by sunrise, use this coin. Flee to the north. Find my uncles at House Sterling."
Her eyes filled with tears. She tried to push the coin back. "No, my lady. I won't leave you."
"This is an order," I said, my voice firm. I closed her fingers around the coin. "Your life is more valuable than any property I own. Do you understand?"
She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face, but she gave a sharp, determined nod and hurried out of the room.
The silence that followed was heavy with unspoken threats. Valerius was a cornered beast, and I needed to add more fuel to his fire of fear.
I went to the writing desk, scribbled the names of several harmless but official-sounding herbs onto a scrap of parchment, and crumpled it into a tight ball.
Just as I finished, the door swung open again.
Valerius stood there, his face a thundercloud. Behind him were the manor's steward and two hulking guards, their hands resting on the hilts of their swords.
"My physicians found nothing, Seraphina," he said, his voice dangerously low. "You have one chance to explain yourself."
A chill went down my spine, but I let none of it show on my face. I leaned back in my chair, affecting an air of weary weakness.
"Did I say it was a poison?" I asked, a mocking smile playing on my lips. "Perhaps it's something far more subtle. A curse, perhaps. One that targets only an Alpha's inner wolf."
As I spoke, I casually tossed the crumpled parchment into the fireplace. The flames licked at it, turning it to ash in an instant.
"That was the only copy of the antidote's formula," I said lightly. "A pity."
The color drained from his face. For an Alpha, their inner wolf was everything-their strength, their status, their very soul. The thought of it being corrupted was a terror beyond death. He couldn't afford to call my bluff.
He stared at the ashes, then at me, his jaw working silently. "What... do you... want?" he finally ground out.
I rose from the chair and met his gaze, my own eyes hard as flint. "I want the Rejection. Now. And I want my entire dowry, down to the last silver spoon."
I added the final turn of the screw. "Have Mrs. Adler begin her accounting. Once the ritual is complete and my carriages are loaded, I will tell you what the 'true' antidote is."
His chest rose and fall with furious breaths. The air grew thick with his enraged pheromones, and his guards shifted nervously. I had pushed him to the very edge. He would either break, or he would kill me.
Just then, the steward stepped forward and whispered something in his ear. I saw Valerius's eyes flicker. Mrs. Adler had arrived. My threat was now a reality.
He closed his eyes, his whole body tense as he fought a war with his own pride and his terrified inner wolf.
When he opened them again, they were chips of ice.
"Fine," he hissed. "You win."
He spun on his heel and barked at the steward. "Fetch the Elder. Prepare for the ritual. And let Mrs. Adler in!"
I allowed myself a small, internal sigh of relief. I had won the first battle.
But the real war would begin the moment I returned to House Beaumont.
I glanced out the window at the dark, pre-dawn sky. Mother, just wait a little longer. I'm coming home.
Seraphina POV:
After Valerius's orders, a tense silence fell over the room. He stood guard at the door, a human cage, his eyes burning holes into my back as I waited.
Mrs. Adler entered, followed by two assistants. Her stern face softened with a flicker of pain when she saw my pale complexion and the faint bruises on my neck, but she was a professional. Without a word, she began directing her team to inventory my belongings.
Then, a soft, weeping sound drifted from the hallway.
"Valerius... what's happening? I heard my sister... she..."
My stepsister, Isabelle Beaumont, appeared in the doorway. She was a vision of fragile innocence in a white silk nightgown, her feet bare, her face streaked with tears. A perfect, wilting flower.
The same act that had fooled me for an entire lifetime.
The ice on Valerius's face instantly melted. He rushed to her side, his voice thick with concern. "Isabelle, you shouldn't be here. The night air is too cold for you."
She collapsed against him, her wide, hazel eyes darting towards me with a look of pure terror. "Sister, why are you doing this?" she sobbed. "I know you don't like me, but... but to poison Valerius? How could you?"
A masterful stroke. She painted me as the villain before I could even speak.
I simply watched her performance, my expression unreadable.
As expected, Valerius's rage reignited, now directed at me. "Seraphina! Look what you've done to her! Give me the antidote and apologize to Isabelle this instant!"
Apologize? A laugh almost escaped my lips.
Slowly, I rose from my chair and walked towards them. My deliberate approach made Isabelle shrink further into Valerius's arms, enhancing her damsel-in-distress act.
I stopped directly in front of her, my eyes dropping to her flat stomach. A smirk pulled at my lips.
"My dear sister," I said, my voice soft but carrying through the room. "Weren't you just telling everyone that you were pregnant? So devoted to Valerius's child that you would risk your own reputation. How noble."
Isabelle's breath hitched. She hadn't expected me to bring that up.
Valerius stiffened. It was true. Isabelle had used a supposed pregnancy to try and force his hand, to secure her position.
I turned my gaze to him, feigning surprise. "Oh, didn't you know? My sister was so desperate to convince me of her love for you that she swallowed a bottle of 'Purple Ghost Root' just a few days ago. All to prove she was carrying your child, hoping I would step aside for your happiness."
Purple Ghost Root was a violent abortifacient, a poison. Isabelle would never touch it. But the lie served its purpose.
Valerius's eyes shot to Isabelle, now filled with suspicion. If she were truly pregnant, why would she even know the name of such a thing?
"No! I didn't!" Isabelle cried, her panic rising. "Sister, why are you lying?"
I ignored her, my hand darting out to grab the moon-shaped silver pendant she always wore around her neck. Her supposed blessing from the Moon Goddess.
"And this," I sneered, "a gift from the Goddess that supposedly makes you immune to all poisons. If that's true, why would you fear any 'poison' I might have?"
I gave the chain a slight tug. She yelped in pain, fresh tears spilling.
Just as Valerius moved to intervene, I released the pendant.
And swung my arm.
The slap was so loud it echoed in the dead silence of the room.
CRACK.
Everyone froze.
Isabelle stared at me, her hand flying to her reddening cheek, her eyes wide with disbelief. Valerius was stunned into silence. He had only ever known me as a meek, submissive Omega.
I shook my stinging hand, my eyes locked on Isabelle's. Then I delivered the final, fatal blow.
"Stop the act," I said, my voice dropping to a cold, hard whisper. "You were never pregnant. And your trysts with the Captain of the Guard in the stables... would you like me to share the details of that little affair with everyone?"
In my past life, I had learned of her infidelity far too late. She had used a fake pregnancy to gain Valerius's sympathy while sleeping with another man.
The blood drained from Isabelle's face. She stared at me, horrified, her body swaying as if she might faint.
Valerius went rigid. He shoved Isabelle away from him, his gaze boring into her, a storm of betrayal brewing in his eyes.
He wasn't a complete idiot. My words, combined with Isabelle's reaction, were undeniable.
I watched the two of them, my supposed mate and my treacherous sister, their sordid little alliance crumbling before my eyes. A deep, satisfying pleasure filled me.
I drew myself up to my full height, a victor claiming her spoils.
"Valerius Kensington," I announced, my voice ringing with newfound power. "Do you still think I owe her an apology?"
I was no longer the Omega they could trample on. I was Seraphina Beaumont, the woman who would one day be the true Luna of this pack, and I was here to collect my debts.
From the hallway, the Elder's aged voice cut through the tension. "Your Highness, shall we begin the ritual?"
