The Rejected Mate-Jessie

Author: : Amelia Reid
Genre: Werewolf
Life for Jessie Miller really couldn't get much worse: being born an Omega, tormented relentlessly by her half-sister, and rejected by her Alpha mate. Up until this point in life, she had lost hope. But fate still did have some pretty big plans laid out for her. When her second-chance mate, the mighty and protective Alpha Lucas, claimed her as his own, Jessie's journey from being rejected to reclaimed began. But it seemed like her past would follow her everywhere. But when the betrayal of her first mate, her sister's relentless cruelty, and the rising tension between rival packs sends Jessie down a dark and perilous road of revenge, little seems to be left for a second-chance mate. Where will this take her? Back to strength and love, or again into the depths of her past?

Chapter 1 The Silent Agony of Jessie Miller

Jessie Miller stood in the shadows of the grand hall, her hands shaking with rage as she watched her half-sister, Vanessa, lapping up all the attention of the pack. Their father, Alpha Miller, had always made it clear that Vanessa was his treasured daughter, born to his favorite mate, while Jessie was the forgotten one, a blemish on the family name. Her mother had died when she was young, after which she was left at the mercy of the pack that hated her for things she had no control over.

Day by day, their scoffs weighed upon her spirit, but nothing hurt as much as seeing the man she thought was her fated mate, Alpha Cade, proudly standing next to Vanessa.

She'd felt it the moment Cade walked into the room-the undeniable bond pulling her toward him, the spark of recognition that he was hers. But Cade's eyes had slid over her, dismissing her as if she were nothing. It wasn't until Vanessa had taken his arm that Jessie realized the truth: Cade had chosen her half-sister. He would make Vanessa his Luna, leaving Jessie as nothing but a forgotten Omega-just like the pack had always wanted.

Every look they shared was like a knife through her chest. The mate bond wailed at her to fight-to claim what rightfully belonged to her-but with every second passing, her heart broke further, while Cade bestowed on Vanessa the admiration Jessie so desperately yearned for.

The pack was in joyful jubilation over the union, never once recognizing Jessie's silent anguish. She tried to back further away, hoping to go unnoticed to slip away, but her father's voice boomed across the hall.

"Jessie! Come here and congratulate your sister.

Her footsteps faltered, but she had little choice. The room fell silent as she drew near to the two of them, all eyes upon her. She swallowed hard, forcing herself to meet Cade's gaze. His cold indifference burned into her soul.

"I... I'm happy for you both," Jessie choked out, her voice barely above a whisper.

Vanessa smirked, looping her arm through Cade's possessively. "Of course you are, little sister. After all, it's not like you were ever meant for anything more."

The sting of Vanessa's words was nothing compared to what came next. Cade leaned down to kiss Vanessa's forehead and his mark shimmered bright on her neck. His voice was low, but loud enough for Jessie to hear.

"Vanessa is my mate, my Luna. There was never anyone else."

Jessie felt the air leave her lungs as her legs gave out from under her. In those words was a rejection silent, cruel, and final. Cade had chosen. And it wasn't her.

She felt tears prick at her eyes as she stumbled away, their laughter still echoing in her ears. The bond that had warmed and promised now twisted inside her, tearing with every breath.

She fled the hall, the pack, and out into the dark forest that wrapped around their land. The anguish of rejection coursed through her veins, sending shivers of pain within her very being-heart and mind. She fell to her knees at the riverbank, clutching her chest as if that could dam the ache from coursing through her.

The days after the announcement had turned into one big continuous wave of torture for Jessie Miller. Every moment within the pack house was a punishment. Her half-sister pranced around, touting her new status as Luna-to-be, and Cade-her own mate, the Alpha-treated Jessie as if she did not exist. The pack, however, had noticed. They knew like she did: she was meant to be with Cade, but he had picked Vanessa, uncaring that he had broken their bond in utter silence.

With every step Jessie made, her feet felt heavier, the whispers getting louder.

"Why would Cade want her?"

"She's just an Omega."

"She's always been weak, even her mother was worthless."

"Vanessa's the real Alpha's daughter-beautiful, strong, everything Jessie isn't."

She tried to keep her head down, tried to avoid their stares, but the humiliation was suffocating. And her father, Alpha Miller, did nothing to defend her. He never had. Jessie had always been a constant reminder of his first mate's death and the shame he felt for her mother's legacy. Now, with Cade's public rejection, Jessie was just another burden-one he could finally dismiss.

Mornings, her workload was doubled, and no one even tried to conceal their disgust. She got the most odious jobs, scrubbing floors until her hands bled, cleaning the packhouse like some kind of servant girl. And Vanessa made every occasion to belittle her.

One evening, while serving dinner to the pack leaders, Vanessa leaned into Cade, her lips caressing his ear. "I can hardly wait until you mark me, Alpha. Then Jessie will know her place-beneath us."

Cade made a typical smirking face and laid his hand on Vanessa's thigh as though looking right through Jessie. "She's already beneath us."

The casual cruelty in his voice broke something inside Jessie. She froze, waiting for someone to rush to her defense, to say it wasn't right. Nobody did. Cade had sealed her fate.

Later that night, Jessie found herself on the pack's training grounds long after others had gone to bed. Her breath turned misty in the cold night air as she looked up into the moon, spilling tears onto her fur.

She could not take any more.

The mate bond's pull had dulled to an ache, and she knew what came next: Cade marking Vanessa in front of the whole pack, severing the bond once and for all. She couldn't bear to watch it, stand there while Cade-her mate-chose someone else.

The thought of running away lured her. She could vanish into some sort of new life, far away from here, where no one knew her shame. But how could she leave the only home she had ever known? Jessie wrapped her arms around herself, the weight of the world pressing down on her chest.

Just then, footsteps crunched on the gravel behind her.

"Jessie."

Cad''s voice was cold, distant. Jessie turned slowly, her heart hammering in her chest, to see him standing there, so tall and commanding-the Alpha that had once been hers. Now he was only the ghost of what her future would not hold.

"You've been a distraction," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "Whatever bond you thought we had, it's over.

Her knees nearly buckled as the words sank in. "Cade, please... You know we're meant to be. You can't just-"

"I can, and I will." His eyes glinted with finality. "I'm marking Vanessa. She's my Luna."

Jessie's breath hitched as her chest contracted violently, as though her heart was being clawed out of her body. "But... but I'm your mate.

Cade stepped closer, his voice low and cruel. "You're nothing to me, Jessie. Just a weak Omega who doesn't belong here. Vanessa is the real Alpha's daughter, the real Luna. You're nothing."

The denial cut through her like a kick in the gut. Cade inhaled poison that filtered into her soul, shredding the bond that once connected them. Jessie stumbled backward, her vision blurring with tears.

It was then that her world crashed down around her. The tie, the only thing that had ever united them, was broken. Cade had chosen Vanessa, and with that choice, he had chosen to destroy Jessie.

"Leave, Jessie," Cade ordered, his voice icy, fatal. "You don't belong in this pack anymore."

It wasn't just a denial of their bonding; it was a banishment. Jessie's blood ran cold as she realized what he was saying. She wasn't being cast aside as a mate but cast out as a member of the pack.

Numb and broken, Jessie turned away, unable to face the man who had once been her everything. She didn't run. She didn't cry out. She just walked-heavy steps, despairing steps-knowing there was nothing left for her here.

She passed the members who had gathered to see her humiliation. No one stopped her. No one cared. They all were waiting for Vanessa to take up her place as Luna, standing beside Cade, and ruling. Jessie was nothing but a forgotten mistake in their eyes.

When she crossed the border of the pack's territory, the final tether of her connection to them snapped. Jessie collapsed in the woods, gasping for air.

Chapter 2 A Fateful Meeting

The world outside her pack's borders was not what Jessie had envisioned. Thick forests stretched, leading to mile upon mile of macabre shadows. Days have gone past, and she wandered without much hold on life, her heart still shattered by Cade's rejection. Each step felt like a betrayal to the body-the screaming of the soul in agony, the severed mate bond hollow.

She had hoped that the farther away from her pack, the lesser it would ache, but it followed her like a second skin. Jessie hadn't eaten in days, the strength rapidly draining out of her. She hardly noticed night turn to day, cold gnawing at her bones.

Her mind was filled with swimming flashes of Cade's brutal words and Vanessa's triumphant smile. There had been no reprieve from their torment, not even in this very moment of exile, as their laughter echoed in her mind.

It wasn't until the fourth day that Jessie fell, finally, her legs giving out under her weight. The world spun as she hit the forest floor, her vision going dark. She barely had the strength to draw a breath, her body trembling from exhaustion. Maybe this was it-maybe this was how she died.

But just as those last remnants of consciousness started to slip away, she heard a voice.

"Hey! Can you hear me?"

The voice was deep, commanding, and laced with an edge of worry. Jessie's lids quivered, her vision much too blurry to outline the figure crouched beside her. The strong arms lifted her with ease against a firm chest.

For the first time in days, she felt warmth.

"I've got you," the voice murmured at her head, and despite her weakness, Jessie felt a strange sense of comfort.

When she awoke, Jessie was in a bed that was foreign to her, soft linens warming her chilled skin. She blinked her eyes, trying to rid herself of the cloud of confusion that surrounded her, and felt her body still sore from days of neglect. The simplicity and elegance of the room were far from the cold, harsh forest she had been wandering through.

She shifted, wincing as her body protested the movement, and that was when she saw him-sitting by the fire, his dark eyes watching her with quiet intensity.

"You're awake," he said, his voice sending a shiver down her spine.

Jessie's heart flipped at the man in front of her. Tall, muscular, commanding almost in an aura around him, thick with power that oozed in waves from every fiber. His eyes seemed to be some deep stormy gray and pierced through her like he had looked and seen every fragment of her broken soul.

"Where. where am I?" Jessie croaked, her throat dry.

You're safe," he said, rising and approaching her. He sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes softening as he stared at her. "My name is Alpha Lucas Greyson. I found you in the woods, half-dead. What were you doing out there alone?

The word "Alpha" made Jessie's heart lurch. Another Alpha. Memories of Cade flashed before her eyes, yet something about Lucas felt different. His presence didn't suffocate her like Cade's had. He was powerful, yes, but there was something gentle about him that did funny things to her chest in a way she didn't quite get.

I. I was exiled," Jessie whispered, her eyes downcast. The shame of her rejection seared through her, but she couldn't bring herself to lie. "My mate... he rejected me."

Lucas's face darkened, his jaw clenched. "Your mate?" His tone was low, deadly.

Jessie nodded, her eyes prickling with tears. "He chose my half-sister as his Luna. There was nothing left for me there.

The room was silent for a moment except the sound of crackling from the fire. Lucas's eyes softened as he reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair from Jessie's face. His touch sent a spark through her-a warmth she hadn't felt since before Cade's betrayal.

Whoever rejected you is a fool, Lucas concluded with all the firmness in his tone. You are strong. I can see it in you, after everything you have been through.

Jessie swallowed, her heartbeat beating in her chest. The intensity of his gaze was a challenge to breathe. She felt an inexplicable pull toward him, the connection they shared tagging at her soul. Could it be? Was Lucas. her second chance mate?

It finally hit her-ooo, like a tidal wave, and her heart was racing. The pull she felt, the warmth, the safety-it all fit now. Lucas was her second mate, the one to heal her broken heart.

"Lucas." Jessie whispered, her voice trembling.

He nodded, and his expression softened even more. "Yes. I felt it the moment I found you. You're my mate, Jessie.

Words that hung in the air between them, thick with meaning. Jessie's chest was constricting with her whirling chaotic emotions. Could she really trust this new bond after everything she had been through? Could she open up her heart once more to a person after Cade had torn it into pieces?

He must have sensed her unease. Lucas reached for her hand, his thumb tracing soothing circles over the back of her knuckles. "I'm not him, Jessie. I won't hurt you the way he did."

A tear escaped her eye, and before she could say a word, Lucas reached over, his lips brushing softly against hers. It was a gentle, tentative kiss, as if he gave her the option to pull away. But Jessie didn't. She leaned into him, her body craving the warmth and safety he offered.

For the first time in weeks, the ache of Cade's rejection dulled, like a balm replaced by comfort-of Lucas's presence. He drew her closer, his arms wrapping around her like a shield against the world. And in that moment, Jessie let herself believe-maybe, just maybe-she could heal.

The chill of night no longer lingered with Lucas at her side, but the warmth his presence introduced into her world did little to thaw the glacial mass that seemed to have settled over her heart. Yet, even sheltered as she was within the circle of his embrace, the memory of Cade's betrayal haunted her, a dark shadow always lurking. Its weight pressed down upon her, a constant reminder of her brokenness.

He had done everything in his power to make her feel safe, but the scars of Jessie's past still lingered-on the inside, where the pain cut deeper than any wound on the outside ever could.

"Are you okay?" Lucas whispered softly one night as they lay in his bed, his fingers tracing lightly along the lines of her arm.

Jessie nodded, but it was a lie-the ache in her chest told a different story. She wanted to be okay, to believe this new life with Lucas, her second chance mate, could erase the pain of the past. Yet, something held her back.

"I'm fine," she whispered, forcing a smile. How broken she was still, how Cade's rejection had hollowed her out, how with every passed moment in the company of Lucas himself a part of her dreaded he would leave her, too-she was not ready to admit to him.

Lucas scooted closer, his body hot and unyielding against her. The smell of him-earth and powerful-swathed her, smoothing the tumult within. His lips grazed her forehead in a comforting gentleness, full of promises he hadn't yet spoken aloud.

"You're not alone anymore, Jessie," he whispered. "I'll protect you. Always.

His words caught in her throat. She so desperately wanted to believe him, wanted to have that faith that this time, it would be different. But trust wasn't something she was capable of giving anymore, not after everything taken from her.

Days folded into weeks, and Jessie slipped into her new routine with Lucas's pack. The pain of Cade's rejection was still there, yet no longer immediate, cutting; rather a dull ache she carted everywhere.

He'd presented her to the pack as his mate, but there were mutterings. Whispers about her past, about the fact that her first mate had refused her. There were those in the pack who looked upon her with pity, and others who eyed her warily. It was obvious not everyone was happy she existed.

Especially, one wolf made no secret of how much he despised her: Darius, Lucas' Beta.

Darius was tall, hulking in the shoulder areas, with a mean glint in his eye. Since Jessie had arrived, he had made it known he did not think she was meant to be a part of their pack. He had openly questioned Lucas's decision to claim her as his mate, and though Lucas had shut him down, the tension between them simmered beneath the surface.

One evening, Jessie was finishing up in the pack house, cleaning up after a meeting. Lucas had been called away to settle a border dispute, leaving her to attend to the pack's duties. She was leaning down to pick up some scattered papers when she heard footsteps behind her.

She turned to find Darius standing there, his arms crossed and a sneer upon his face.

"You do not belong here," he spat, venom in his tone.

Jessie's heart was racing, but she forced herself to stand tall, her eyes locked on his. "Lucas is my mate," she said, attempting to sound sure of herself. "I belong here."

Darius snorted. "Lucas made a mistake. You're weak. You were rejected by your first mate for a reason, and now you expect us to believe you're worthy of our Alpha?"

His words cut deep, reopening old wounds that Jessie had tried to bury. She fisted her hands, her nails clinging deep into her palms as she fought back the welling tears.

"I am his mate," she repeated, though her voice broke.

Darius took a step closer, looming over her. "You don't deserve him," he growled. "And I'll do whatever it takes to make sure you don't ruin this pack."

Before Jessie was able to reply, the door to the pack house burst open and Lucas stormed in, his eyes ablaze with fury.

"Enough!" he thundered, stepping between Jessie and Darius. "You will not speak to her like that again."

Darius's eyes flashed, but he retreated a step back, his lips curling into a snarl. "I'm only trying to protect the pack, Alpha."

Lucas's voice was ice. "The pack is my responsibility. And Jessie is my mate. If you can't accept that, you have no place here."

For a tense moment, Darius held Lucas's gaze, the two men locked in a silent battle of wills. But eventually, Darius lowered his head in submission.

"Understood," he muttered before turning to leave the pack house.

As the door slammed shut behind him, Lucas turned to Jessie, his expression softening. "Are you okay?"

Jessie nodded, but the encounter with Darius had shaken her. Gnawing fear, she didn't really belong in Lucas's pack took hold, and she couldn't let go of the sneaking suspicion that Darius might be right. Once rejected-who was to say it couldn't happen again?

Lucas reached for her hand, pulling her close. "You belong here, Jessie," he said softly, as if reading her thoughts. "Don't let anyone make you doubt that."

She leaned into his embrace, letting the warmth of his body chase away the cold that had settled inside her. But even as she rested her head against his chest, a nagging voice whispered in the back of her mind.

She found herself standing at the edge of the pack's territory that night, staring out into the darkness. Lucas had finally fallen asleep, exhausted from trying to deal with the growing tensions in the pack, and she had slipped away to clear her head.

The moon was low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over treetops. Jessie closed her eyes and inhaled the silence of the night when a wave of the familiar scent washed over her.

Her heart stilled.

Cade.

She spun around, her gaze raking the shadows, and there he was, standing just beyond the treeline, barely discernible in the light of the moon. His presence sent a shiver coursing down her spine, and a mix of fear and anger churned in her chest.

"What are you doing here?" Jessie demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.

Cade stepped closer, his eyes dark and unreadable. "I had to see you."

"You have no right to be here," she snapped, anger rising. "You rejected me. You chose Vanessa."

"I did," Cade said in a low voice. "But that doesn't change the fact that you're still mine."

Jessie's heart was racing along with her shaking hands. How dare he? How dare he come here after everything he had done? After all the pain he had caused her?

She spat out, "I am not yours." The venom in her voice was palpable. "I belong to Lucas now."

Cade's face darkened further, his jaw clenching. "You may be with him, but we both know the bond isn't truly broken. You can feel it, can't you?"

The truth of his words hit her like a blow and Jessie's chest tightened. She'd felt it, the connection between them that seemed to live well past his rejection. But that didn't mean she'd ever forgive him.

"Leave, Cade," she said, the chill in her voice unmistakable. "Before Lucas finds you."

But Cade did nothing of the sort. His eyes burned into hers.

Chapter 3 The Rising Storm

Standing before the mirror, Jessie's fingers outlined the new healed scars on her skin. Bruises and cuts, from constant torment by her pack, had subsided; however, the wounds emotionally ran deeper. Every day, she told herself the truth-that she wasn't that broken girl who had been rejected by her mate and wasn't even that weakling Vanessa tried to make her become.

But still, she had in her corner one much stronger-Lucas, her second-chance mate. A strong Alpha who looked at her for what she was, and not for what she lacked.

Of course, that didn't mean her nightmares had ceased to haunt her.

Whispers and sneers. it was all still echoed within her mind from her old pack: the cold, hollow look Cade had given her when he chose Vanessa over her, marking her sister as his Luna; Vanessa with her smug smile, the way she'd reveled in Jessie's suffering, almost as if every moment of Jessie's pain brought her some sick form of joy.

Jessie's knuckles whitened on the edge of the sink. She would not go back there-not to the pain, not to the rejection. Not to Cade.

But in fact, Vanessa had not let go. Already, word had spread through the territories that Jessie was now mated to Lucas, one of the most powerful Alphas in the region. And Vanessa was furious. Here she was with everything Jessie could ever have wanted-a mate, the Luna title-but even that wasn't enough. Vanessa wanted to be on top, always.

Now that Jessie had found her second mate, Lucas, jealousy at Vanessa burned hotter.

Vanessa stared through the office wall of Cade, curling up her lips as she read the reports from the scouts. It had barely been weeks since Jessie left after being brutally rebuffed, yet her stories about her life were spreading faster.

The outcast of the group now mated to the Alpha of one of the most formidable packs out there. The papers began to crumple in her hands as she tightened her grip on them.

"How could she have ended up with Lucas?" Vanessa spat, venom lacing her tone.

Cade looked up from his desk, his eyebrows furrowing. He hadn't spoken much about Jessie since the day of the rejection, but Vanessa knew that bond wasn't as severed as she'd like. Having marked Vanessa did nothing to diminish the connection Cade felt with Jessie.

"You're still thinking about her, aren't you?" Vanessa said sharply, her eyes narrowing on Cade. "Even now, with everything we have, she's still in your head.

Cade's jaw hard-set, but he said nothing. Vanessa's temper flared, her hands slapping down onto his desk. "You chose me. You made me your Luna. And now she's moved on with Lucas, a better mate than you'll ever be!"

Cade's eyes flashed, and a dangerous growl rumbled from his chest. "Enough.

Vanessa did not stop being angry. She stood tall, her eyes burning with fire. "I won't let her win, Cade-not after everything she's taken from me. I'll make her regret ever crossing me.".

She stood at the pack's training grounds and watched Lucas spar with his warriors. His movements were smooth, powerful, the sort of strength she could feel through the mate bond. It was a comfort, a sense of safety she hadn't known in years.

He looked up at her, his mouth tugging upwards in a smile. Jessie couldn't help it-she smiled back, and her heart lightened at just the sight of him. In him, she had found peace-something she never thought possible since Cade's betrayal.

But peace never lasted long.

Later that night, in the dimly lit office, they were together when a messenger came to deliver a message. He was puffing, obviously from running.

"Alpha, I bring news from the northern border. Cade's pack. Vanessa is spreading word that Jessie is undeserving of her new position."

Lucas's face darkened and the air around him thickened with power. Jessie straightened, her gut twisting.

"What did she say?" Lucas growled.

The messenger swallowed hard as his eyes darted to Jessie. "She says Jessie has no place being the mate of a powerful Alpha such as yourself. She's calling her weak and broken, saying if she can't handle her first mate, then how would she handle you?

Jessie's heart sank, her throat constricting. Vanessa's words-cutting, meant to dig into the scars Jessie had worked so hard to heal-hit their mark. The memories of Cade's rejection, of Vanessa's cruel laughter, all came rushing back in a torrent of pain.

But before the tears could surface, Lucas rose to his feet, his fists clenched at his sides, his presence like a storm, the air crackling with his rage.

Send word back to Cade's pack," he growled, low and deadly. "Tell Vanessa that Jessie is my mate, and any attack on her is an attack on me. She would do well to remember that."

The messenger nodded quickly, hurrying from the room.

Lucas turned to Jessie, his eyes softening at the hurt in her expression. He crossed the room in three strides, pulling her into his arms. "Don't listen to her. She's jealous. She's angry because she knows you have moved on to better. To someone better."

She closed her eyes, letting the heat from Lucas's hug seep into her bones. But even in his arms, part of her hurt-to hear Vanessa's words, to remember how she would never-ever-be able to outrun her past, no matter how far she ran.

Later that night, Jessie lay in bed next to Lucas, staring up at the ceiling. All the events of her day replayed themselves in her brain, over and over, until she just couldn't take it anymore. Carefully, she got out of bed and stepped out onto the balcony.

The cool night air hit her skin, and she inhaled deeply, trying to douse the storm of emotions that was inside her. But it was no use. Vanessa's words burrowed deep, opening up wounds she had thought had healed.

Jessie closed her eyes, leaning against the railing. The night was quiet, the pack house still. But far away, she could hear the faint howl of wolves-Cade's pack.

She didn't want to think about him, about what they once had. But no matter how hard she tried to forget, the thought of Cade lingered in her mind, like a ghost in every thought that crossed her mind.

"What are you doing out here?"

The sound of Lucas's voice startled her, and turning, she found him standing in the doorway, his eyes pegged with concern. Jessie forced a smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes.

"I couldn't sleep, she whispered.

Lucas stepped out onto the balcony, wrapping his arms around her from behind. His chin lay on her shoulder, and Jessie leaned into him, finding solace in his touch.

"I know today was rough, Lucas whispered. "But you are so much stronger than that, Jessie. What Vanessa said doesn't give you value. You are more important than what she says you are."

Jessie nodded, her heart still sore. "I just. I don't want to be weak anymore."

"You're not weak," Lucas whispered, his lips grazing her ear. "You've survived things that would have broken most people. And now you're with me. I'll never let anyone hurt you again.

Jessie turned in his arms, her eyes meeting his. There was something in his gaze, something that made her feel like she finally could breathe again. She reached up, cupping his face in her hands as her heart started to pound in her chest.

"I love you," she whispered; the words slipped out before she could catch them.

Lucas's eyes gentled and he leaned down, pressing his lips to hers. At first, it was a soft kiss, tender and slow, but rapidly grew in intensity as his arms drew her close, clinging tightly to her.
