Chapter 1 Promises in the Dark

The scent of crushed mint and dried feverfew hung heavy in the narrow confines of the apothecary, clinging to the damp stone walls like a second skin. Evelyn's fingers moved with practiced, rhythmic speed, separating the pale stalks from the bruised leaves before grinding them into a paste. Her hands, calloused and stained faint green at the knuckles, were steady despite the tremor in her heart.

To the rest of the Shadow-Fang Pack, she was merely an Omega-a nameless healer meant to mend torn flesh after boundary skirmishes and scrub the marble floors of the pack house before dawn. But tonight, as the silver crescent moon crested the sharp ridges of the pine forest, her low status felt like a fading dream.

Tomorrow, everything would change.

She wiped a streak of herbal paste onto her linen apron and turned toward the wooden peg near the doorway. Hanging there was her ceremonial robe. It wasn't the heavy, jewel-encrusted velvet worn by the high-born females of the inner council, but simple spun silk, hand-dyed a deep indigo that mirrored the night sky. She had spent three months embroidering the hem with delicate silver thread, stitch by painstaking stitch, dreaming of the moment she would stand before the Pack Elders.

A floorboard creaked near the threshold.

Evelyn didn't startle. Her wolf, quiet and reserved as she was, hummed with a sudden, intense warmth before the scent even reached her nose-dark cedar, ozone, and the fierce, underlying heat of a true predator.

"You're still working," a low, gravelly voice echoed through the dim room.

Evelyn turned, her breath catching in her throat. Connor stood framed in the narrow doorway, his broad shoulders blocking out the pale moonlight from the hallway. His dark hair was wind-tousled, his jaw dark with a day's worth of stubble, and those sharp, amber eyes burned with an intensity that made the small room feel suffocatingly tight.

"Someone has to prepare the salves for the morning patrols," she said softly, offering him a small, hesitant smile. "A future High Alpha shouldn't be sneaking into the servants' quarters, Connor. If your father's guards..."

In two swift strides, Connor crossed the room, cutting off her words as his large, calloused hand cupped her jaw. His thumb brushed over the high curve of her cheekbone, hot and possessive, making her blood rush wildly through her veins.

"Let them look," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rich and thick with restraint. "Let them talk. Tomorrow, every elder who looked down on you will bow to you. I don't care about their traditions, Evelyn. I don't care about their complaints over bloodlines."

He dipped his head, his lips pressing a lingering, burning kiss to the pulse point beating rapidly beneath her ear. Evelyn gasped, her hands instinctively catching the rough fabric of his leather tunic. The raw, heavy scent of his dominance wrapped around her like a blanket, pulling her under.

"Come with me," he whispered against her skin, his hand sliding down to entwine his fingers tightly with hers.

"Connor, it's late. The ceremony is at dawn-"

"Now, Evelyn."

He didn't wait for her agreement, gently tugging her toward the side door that led into the shadowed treeline behind the medical hall.

The night air hit her skin like a splash of cold river water, thick with the scent of damp earth and pine needles. Connor led her swift and silent through the dark forest, his grip never loosening. They climbed the familiar, rugged path that spiraled upward toward Moonlit Ridge-the highest peak in the Shadow-Fang territory, a jagged shelf of white stone jutting out over the vast, misty valley below.

When they broke through the thick canopy, the world opened up beneath them. The valley stretched out like a velvet blanket, dotted with the glowing torchfires of the pack village below. Above them, the stars burned sharp and bright against the deep black canvas of the sky.

Connor stopped at the edge of the overlook, pulling her against his chest. His arms wrapped tightly around her waist, anchoring her to him as the wind whipped her loose hair across her face.

"Look down there," Connor murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder. His chest rose and fell in heavy, deliberate breaths. "Everything the light touches belongs to the Shadow-Fang. And tomorrow, it belongs to you."

Evelyn leaned back into his solid heat, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Your father wanted a high-born Luna, Connor. Someone from a powerful border pack. A female with wealth and legions of warriors to strengthen our borders. I have nothing. Just my herbs, my hands, and a faint wolf."

Connor turned her in his arms, his eyes blazing in the starlight with a fierce, almost terrifying devotion. "You have me," he growled low in his chest. "You have my heart, my soul, and my blood. That is worth more than a hundred border alliances."

He reached into his leather tunic, his fingers searching for a moment before withdrawing a small, dark object. When he opened his hand, the moonlight caught the metallic glint of a dark silver band. It was heavy, hand-carved with ancient runes that pulsed with a faint, residual magic, set with a raw, uncut sapphire that burned like a blue flame.

Evelyn's eyes widened, her breath hitching. "The Ring of the First Luna... Connor, no. That belongs in the pack vault. Your mother..."

"My mother is gone," he interrupted firmly, grabbing her left hand. His touch was firm, refusing to let her pull away. "And this ring was meant for the woman who holds the Alpha's heart. Not a political pawn. Not a noble trophy."

He slid the heavy ring onto her ring finger. It fit perfectly, the cold metal warming instantly against her skin as the dormant magic within the band hummed softly, acknowledging her touch.

"Swear it to me," Connor whispered, his thumb caressing the back of her hand, his eyes searching hers with a desperate intensity. "Swear that you will stand beside me tomorrow. That you won't let their whispers push you away."

"I swear," Evelyn breathed, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. The doubt that had been gnawing at her chest for months melted away, burned to ash by the fierce heat of his gaze. "I'm yours, Connor. Always."

A low, primal growl sounded deep in his chest as he pulled her flush against his body. His mouth claimed hers with a sudden, bruising passion that stole the air right out of her lungs. There was no hesitation, no gentle hesitation left between them only the raw, overwhelming tide of years spent hiding in shadows, now bursting through the dam.

He lifted her effortlessly, setting her down upon the soft, moss-covered ground beneath the shelter of an ancient pine tree. The world narrowed to the scent of cedar and pine, the rough texture of his hands trailing heat over her bare skin, and the wild, frantic rhythm of their beating hearts.

Every touch felt like a promise sealed in fire. As he leaned down, his teeth lightly grazing the sensitive skin at the crook of her neck-marking her with his scent, claiming her before the moon-Evelyn closed her eyes and surrendered completely. She yielded to his touch, his heat, and the intoxicating belief that she was loved by the most powerful male in the territory.

In the dark, beneath the watchful eyes of the stars, she gave him everything she had-her trust, her heart, and her body, anchoring her entire existence to his promises.

When Evelyn opened her eyes, the world was bathed in the pale, cool slate of early morning.

The air was frigid. She shivered, pulling the edge of her cloak tighter around her bare shoulders as she sat up on the bed of moss. The fire in her blood from hours ago had cooled into a dull, lingering ache, but a quiet, blooming warmth remained in her chest.

She reached out blindly to her right, expecting her hand to find the broad, warm expanse of Connor's back.

Her fingers touched cold, damp stone.

Evelyn blinked away the sleep, turning her head. The space beside her was empty. The moss was flattened where he had lain, but the lingering heat of his body was long gone.

"Connor?" she called out softly, her voice raspy from the morning chill.

Only the rustling of the pine needles answered her.

She stood up quickly, her pulse giving a frantic, nervous flutter. Her legs felt slightly weak as she dressed herself in the dim light, smoothing down her wrinkled tunic and pulling her cloak over her shoulders. The heavy sapphire ring on her hand caught the weak dawn light, its dark blue stone gleaming like a solitary eye.

He probably went down early to ready the ceremonial grounds, she told herself, forcing a breath into her tight lungs. He had to dress in his full Alpha armor. He didn't want to wake me.

Yet an uneasy knot began to form deep in her stomach, twisting tighter with every step she took down the winding path from Moonlit Ridge. The forest was eerily quiet. No birds sang in the high branches. The usual morning bustle of the pack house was muted, smothered by an odd, tense silence that hung heavy over the valley.

When she reached the medical hall, she slipped inside through the back door, heading straight for her small, windowless room.

The door was slightly ajar.

Evelyn pushed it open, stopping dead in her tracks.

Sitting on her small wooden desk, placed directly over her neatly folded indigo ceremonial robe, was a thick piece of heavy parchment. It was sealed not with the blue wax of the pack, but with the dark, crimson seal of the Alpha Council.

Her hand trembled as she reached out, her fingers catching on the rough edge of the paper. She broke the seal, unrolling the heavy parchment.

The ink was black, bold, and rushed, written in Connor's distinct, rigid handwriting.

Evelyn,

By the time you read this, the Elders will have convened at the High Altar. I know what I promised you on the ridge, and every word burned in my chest as I wrote it. But an Alpha does not belong to himself. He belongs to the survival of his pack.

The Crimson-Fang territory has mobilized five legions along our southern border. We cannot survive a war alone. The Council has reached an agreement with House Beatrice. To secure their army, I must take Duchess Beatrice as my Luna at sunrise.

Forgive me for what must be done for the pack. Stay in your quarters today. Do not come to the altar.

- C.

The paper slipped from her numb fingers, fluttering uselessly to the stone floor.

The room seemed to tilt, the walls closing in on her until the air rushed out of her lungs in a harsh, strangled gasp. Outside her window, high up in the central plaza, the deep, thunderous chime of the ceremonial war bells began to ring, announcing the start of the High Alpha's wedding.

Chapter 2 Tears of Poison

The thunderous chimes of the ceremonial bells echoed through the stone corridors, vibrating straight through the soles of Evelyn's boots. Her mind was a chaotic blur, running on pure instinct as she raced toward the main pack house. The betrayal from Connor's letter felt like a gaping wound in her chest, but a smaller, stubborn part of her refused to accept it until she heard the truth directly from his lips.

When she swung open the doors to the central wing, the air inside was suffocatingly thick. It didn't smell like a celebration. There were no flower garlands or joyful scents of wine. Instead, the distinct, sharp stench of panic and copper filled the hallway.

Instead of a wedding procession, a crowd of high-ranking Elders stood clustered around the entrance to the medical sanctuary. Their voices were low, furious rumbles.

"Step aside!" a guard barked, his arm extending to block Evelyn as she tried to squeeze past.

"I am the pack healer," Evelyn said, her voice shaking slightly, though she forced her posture straight. "Let me through."

The guard glanced at her silver ring-the one still clinging to her trembling finger and hesitated just long enough for her to duck beneath his arm.

She burst into the sunlit infirmary, but the sight waiting for her made her blood run instantly cold.

On the central cot, sprawled among white silk sheets, was Sienna. Evelyn's half-sister the fragile girl Evelyn had rescued from the rogue borderlands three years ago-was writhing in pain. Her skin was deathly pale, slick with cold sweat, and dark purple veins bulged along her neck. She whimpered, her body shuddering with violent tremors as if her very nerve endings were on fire.

And standing over her, holding her trembling shoulders with white-knuckled intensity, was Connor.

He wasn't wearing his ceremonial Alpha robes. His leather tunic was unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair disheveled, and his eyes burned with a raw, terrifying panic.

"Connor..." The name barely escaped Evelyn's throat.

At the sound of her voice, Sienna gasped, violently flinching as if she had been struck. She buried her tear-streaked face against Connor's chest, her small hands clutching tightly to his shirtsleeves.

"Don't let her near me!" Sienna sobbed, her voice high and raspy, suffocated by hyperventilation. "Please, Connor! Keep her away from me! She-she gave it to me!"

Connor's head snapped toward the doorway. The warmth, the fierce devotion, and the desperate love that had filled his amber eyes on Moonlit Ridge hours ago were completely gone. In their place was a wall of arctic frost.

"Evelyn," Connor growled, the Alpha aura rolling off him in heavy, suffocating waves that forced the lesser wolves in the room to bow their heads. "What did you do?"

"I haven't done anything!" Evelyn took a step forward, her eyes darting between Connor and her half-sister. "I just arrived. Sienna, what are you talking about? I haven't seen you since yesterday afternoon!"

"You're lying!" Sienna cried out, her chest heaving as a streak of blackish blood trickled from the corner of her lip. "You brought me that lavender tea last night! You said... you said it would help calm my nerves for the ceremony. You said you wanted us to be close again!"

"I didn't bring you any tea," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a desperate whisper. She looked at the Elders standing around the room, then back to the man who had held her beneath the stars only hours before. "Connor, you know I was at the apothecary all night. I was preparing the salves. Then I was with-"

She stopped herself, the words catching in her throat. She couldn't say it. Not in front of the Elders. Not when his letter explicitly warned her to stay away.

"She's convulsing because of Night-Shade extract," an Elder named Vance interjected, stepping forward with his arms folded over his chest. His harsh eyes locked onto Evelyn. "It's an ancient, odorless toxin. It paralyzes a wolf's internal mana pathways and slowly rots their spirit from the inside out. Only an experienced apothecary knows how to refine it."

"I know what Night-Shade is," Evelyn said, her hands balling into tight fists. "And I don't possess any. It's forbidden by pack law! I would never harm Sienna. I saved her life!"

"Did you?" Sienna's personal guard, a tall male named Marcus with a scar across his jaw, stepped out from the shadows near the medicine cabinets. He held a small, velvet-lined wooden box in his hands-Evelyn's private medicine chest, the one she kept locked in her quarters.

"What are you doing with my things?" Evelyn demanded, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"When Lady Sienna began choking on her blood an hour ago, I took the liberty of searching the healer's quarters for an antidote," Marcus said, his voice smooth and devoid of emotion. He reached into his coat pocket and produced a tiny, glass vial filled with a thick, viscous black liquid. "I found this hidden beneath the false bottom of her silver apothecary kit."

The room went dead silent.

Evelyn stared at the vial in horror. "That isn't mine. I've never seen that before in my life!"

"It bears your apothecary seal on the stopper, Evelyn," Elder Vance said coldly, taking the vial from Marcus and holding it up to the morning light. "And the wax matches the batch you poured three days ago."

"Someone planted it!" Evelyn shouted, stepping toward Connor, her eyes begging him to look at her, to see the truth. "Connor, look at me! You know me. You know my heart. I have dedicated my entire life to healing this pack. Why would I poison my own sister?"

Sienna let out a fresh burst of agonizing sobs, clinging tighter to Connor's neck. "Because she hated me!" Sienna wept, her voice ringing clear through the quiet room. "She found out that the Council offered me as a secondary consort to the Crimson-Fang Alpha to secure the treaty if the wedding failed! She thought... she thought I was trying to steal her place!"

"That's a lie!" Evelyn's voice cracked. She reached out, her fingers almost touching Connor's arm. "Connor, please. Speak to me."

Connor slowly stood up, pushing Sienna gently back onto the pillows. As he turned to face Evelyn, his expression was a mask of cold, unyielding granite. The heavy weight of his Alpha presence hit her like a physical blow, forcing her back a step.

He didn't ask for her side of the story. He didn't demand an investigation. He simply stared at her with a look of profound, sickening disgust-as if the woman standing before him was a stranger he regretted ever touching.

"You were bitter," Connor said, his voice flat, devoid of any warmth. "I thought you were quiet. I thought you had dignity. But you couldn't bear the thought of losing what you thought was yours."

"Connor, no-"

"Silence!" he roared, the sheer force of his voice rattling the glass bottles on the shelves.

He reached out and grabbed Evelyn's left hand. His grip was so tight the bones in her wrist groaned under the pressure. With a harsh, brutal jerk, he ripped the heavy silver band off her finger, tearing the skin at her knuckle.

Evelyn gasped, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes as a drop of blood trickled down her hand.

Connor held the Ring of the First Luna up between them for a fleeting second, his eyes burning with a dark, bitter rage. Then, without a moment's hesitation, he tossed the ancient heirloom onto the cold stone floor. The silver band bounced twice, ringing sharply against the quiet room before rolling into the dust at Elder Vance's feet.

"I gave you my heart," Connor whispered, his voice laced with a lethal, unforgiving ice that cut deeper than any blade. "And you tried to murder my bloodline."

He turned his back on her, kneeling beside the cot to take Sienna's shaking hand once more.

"Take her to the damp dungeons," Connor ordered the guards, not even bothering to look at Evelyn as she stood frozen in place. "Strip her of her apothecary title. If Sienna's wolf dies today, Evelyn hangs at sunset."

Chapter 3 Rejection at the Sacred Altar

Cold iron bit into the bleeding flesh of Evelyn's wrists, heavy links clanking with every agonizing step she was forced to take. The damp stench of the dungeons still clung to her clothes, but as the guards shoved her through the arched wooden doors of the central plaza, the blinding morning sun hit her eyes like a physical blow.

She expected the solemn hush of a traditional coronation. Instead, a wall of hatred roared over her.

Hundreds of pack members crammed the stone courtyard, their faces contorted into masks of pure rage. The very people whose wounds she had stitched, whose children she had brought fever-reducers for in the dead of night, were now screaming at her.

"Traitorous snake!" a female shouted from the front row, hurling a half-rotten turnip that clipped Evelyn's shoulder.

"Omega filth! She tried to murder Lady Sienna!"

"Hang her! Hang the traitor!"

Evelyn kept her chin up, though her knees buckled under the weight of the heavy iron chains wrapping her torso. Her skin burned where the metal touched, forged with silver traces meant to suppress a wolf's strength. She searched the crowd for a single familiar face, a single pair of eyes that held even a shred of doubt. She found none. The mob wanted blood, and the Elders had served her up on a platter.

At the center of the plaza, elevated above the crowd on a dais of carved white granite, stood the Sacred Altar.

Normally, the Altar of the Blood Moon was reserved for joyful occasions-matings, coronations, and the blessing of newborn pups. Today, however, a massive slab of dark, jagged obsidian had been rolled into the center. The Judgment Stone.

Standing beside the stone was Connor.

He wore the ceremonial obsidian armor of the High Alpha, the crimson cape of his bloodline draping over his broad shoulders like a waterfall of fresh blood. Beside him, wrapped in shimmering ivory Luna silk, stood Sienna. She leaned heavily against Connor's side, a delicate veil covering her face, play-acting the part of a fragile, recovering victim. Her hand was wrapped tightly around Connor's forearm, her knuckles pale against his dark armor.

A guard shoved Evelyn hard in the small of her back, forcing her to her knees at the base of the altar steps. The rough stone scraped her skin, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the sickening drop in her chest when Connor looked down at her.

His face was carved of ice. There was no hesitation in his eyes. No shadow of the male who had held her beneath the pines on Moonlit Ridge, whispering promises of a shared future into her hair.

Elder Vance stepped forward, holding a heavy parchment scroll. He raised his hand, and the roaring crowd gradually fell into a tense, expectant hush.

"Members of the Shadow-Fang Pack!" Vance's voice echoed off the high stone walls. "We gather under the light of the morning sun not to celebrate a single union, but to preserve the very survival of our bloodline. The Omega, Evelyn, stands accused of high treason and the attempted murder of royal blood."

Evelyn dragged herself up slightly, her chains rattling loudly in the quiet space. "I am innocent!" she shouted, her voice raspy, desperate, yet carrying across the front rows. "Connor, look at me! You know the truth! Check the apothecary logs! Check the door wards!"

Connor didn't even blink. He didn't look down into her eyes. He kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, staring out over the heads of his screaming pack.

"The evidence is absolute," Vance continued, ignoring her completely. "Under the law of Pack Preservation, an Alpha cannot harbor a poisoner. Nor can he bind himself to a traitor. High Alpha Connor, execute your duty to the pack."

The crowd erupted in a dark, rhythmic chant, stomping their feet against the cobblestones. Reject her! Reject her! Reject her!

Connor stepped forward to the edge of the stone platform. The wind caught his crimson cape, snapping it back like a banner of war. He drew a long, silver dagger from his belt-the ceremonial Blade of Severance-and held it over the Judgment Stone.

Evelyn's breath hitched. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, her wolf howling in terror deep inside her mind. A mate rejection was not just words; for a wolf, it was a literal tearing of the soul, an agonizing severing of the invisible threads that bound two spirits together.

"Evelyn of the Omega Rank," Connor began, his voice amplified by his Alpha aura. It vibrated through the stones beneath her knees, cold, precise, and devoid of a single drop of mercy. "You have broken the sacred trust of this pack. You have brought shame to your bloodline and blood to my house."

"Connor, please..." tears finally spilled over her lashes, cutting clean tracks through the dirt on her cheeks. "Don't do this. Don't throw away what we built."

He didn't hesitate. He raised the silver blade and sliced the palm of his right hand, letting the dark Alpha blood drip onto the black surface of the Judgment Stone.

"By the blood of the First Alpha running through my veins," Connor boomed, his voice cutting through her desperate pleas, "I, Connor of the Shadow-Fang, hereby sever all ties, promises, and bonds to you. I reject you as my mate. I reject you as my equal. I reject you from my heart and my pack."

A violent shockwave of energy burst from the stone.

It hit Evelyn right in the center of her chest. She let out an agonizing, blood-curdling scream as the invisible thread linking her wolf to his snapped with a brutal, tearing force. It felt as though someone had reached inside her chest, grabbed her beating heart, and ripped it out through her throat.

She collapsed forward, her forehead pressing against the freezing cobblestones. She gasped for air, but her lungs felt full of glass. Her wolf shrieked inside her mind, curling into a tight, shivering ball of despair before falling dead silent. The faint bond they had shared-the subtle warmth of his emotions she had felt for years vanished, leaving behind a cold, hollow void that threatened to consume her entirely.

Beside Connor, Sienna shifted her veil back just enough for Evelyn to see. Through her tears, Evelyn caught the tiny, cruel smirk curling the corners of her half-sister's lips.

"Furthermore," Vance's voice thundered over the sobbing Omega on the ground, "to secure our borders and ensure our survival against the Crimson-Fang, High Alpha Connor hereby executes the law of Pack Preservation. He takes Lady Sienna as his rightful Luna, effective immediately!"

The crowd cheered wildly, a deafening roar of approval that drowned out the sound of Evelyn's shattered breaths. Connor didn't hesitate; he turned to Sienna, taking her hand and placing his bloodied palm over hers, sealing the immediate union before the eyes of the pack.

Evelyn lay in the dirt, her body trembling uncontrollably as the dark magic of the rejection worked its way through her veins, leaving her feeling utterly hollowed out. She was nothing now. Less than an Omega. A nameless, broken husk.

She forced her shaking arms to push her upper body off the ground, her pale face slick with sweat and tears as she glared up at the dais. "You took everything..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring crowd. "You took my life... my honor... my heart..."

Connor turned back to the edge of the platform. His hand was wrapped tightly around Sienna's, the dark silver blood still dripping from his palm. He looked down at Evelyn lying broken in the dust, his eyes completely devoid of the male who had once sworn to love her until his dying breath.

He raised his hand, signaling the crowd to silence once more. The cheers died down into an eager, bloodthirsty quiet.

"For your crimes against the pack," Connor said, his voice echoing off the high stone walls with ruthless finality, "execution would be a mercy you do not deserve. You are stripped of all rank, stripped of your name, and exiled to the Rogue Lands effective at sunset!"
