Victoria vomited blood while she held her stomach in pain. She glared daggers at her father, who was smirking down at her, a triumphant smile on his lips, his eyes glinted with mischief and pride. Hatred bubbled in Victoria's heart, and her blood boiled with rage as she thought about her latest discovery, about how the evil couple, her father and her stepmother, who had been her nanny when her mother was alive, had poisoned her just so that they could take over her mother's wealth.
Her father sneered mockingly, "So what if your mother left everything to you? So what if you know that we schemed and killed your mother to take her wealth? What can you do about it? You are still too powerless to do anything; even your death would mean nothing, just like your mother's!" He boasted hauntingly, which further boosted Victoria's rage.
"Why? What did my mother do to you?" She choked out, blood spilling out of her mouth with every word. Kate, her stepmother, sneered with hatred, "She took my husband! How dare she come after my husband to seduce him?"
"Seduce him?" Victoria chuckled darkly, her eyes filled with mockery. " Was my mother the one who did the seducing, or your cunning husband, who wasn't satisfied with a hag like you! My mother didn't seduce your husband, and you greedy people don't deserve to slander her name!" She bit back at them, making all their faces ugly. Kate snickered and slapped the dying Victoria across the face angrily.
One of the things that Kate hated hearing about was her incompetence at keeping her husband satisfied in the house; even after Victoria's mother's death, Henry, her husband, had gone out to look for other mistresses to keep by his side, disregarding her existence.
Victoria gritted her teeth as she tried to get up, only to be knocked down again by William, her stepbrother. He had always taken credit for her work, stealing her projects and claiming them as his own. No one except her team knew the truth - that he was a hoax, pretending to be a genius. She could already imagine what it would be like if the empire her mother painstakingly built was handed over to the frivolous young master before her.
"You are defeated; it's good you stay down," he mocked as he raised a transparent USB drive with smugness. Victoria's eyes went wide, and her hatred simmered over as she saw the drive in his hand. It was the one that contained her latest technological project; she had taken over the project from her mother and improved it, and the software was in the last phase and almost ready to be used.
Blinded by rage and the desire to destroy the software with her, she gathered the little bit of strength and rationality she had left and rushed up to tackle William to the ground. He fell and hit his head on the glass table behind him. The glass table broke and pieces of glass entered William's skull. Victoria felt a little bit of relief as she saw the thick blood oozing out of his head. She already lost all of her strength, and she couldn't struggle for the drive any longer, so she lay down feeling comforted that she was able to deal some damage and at least leave a scar on him.
'Hopefully, he would be brain dead' she thought in her mind as she felt her stomach knot together in pain.
In her hazy state, Victoria saw the rest of the family running to William, sadness overwhelming her heart at the thought of dying all alone, with no loved one around her. 'I'm sorry, mother; I am unable to protect everything you left behind, she thought to herself.
As her consciousness began to fade, she heard a mechanical voice ask, {Would you like to get revenge on your enemies?}
Victoria didn't know where the voice came from, but the water of revenge kept boiling in her heart, and she couldn't let go of her hatred towards the Hamilton family. She quickly agreed to the voice, "Yes! I want them to experience despair beyond human understanding; I want them to live a desolate life; I want their bones to rot on the street without anybody picking them up."
{Your wish shall be granted, and you shall watch it happen with your own eyes and execute your revenge with your own hands} the mechanical voice replied, and Victoria scoffed, "I am dying like this, and you are still giving me false hope. It's enough for me to know there is someone who would avenge me; I don't need to witness it with my eyes. However, I will be happy to watch it from the afterlife." Victoria explained.
{Do you accept to bond with the luck system?} The mechanical voice asked. Victoria hesitated for a bit as the name of the system sounded familiar. She brushed the feeling to the back of her mind; this time all she felt was numbness; the pain from the poisoning had long been forgotten. "Will the lucky system help me take my revenge?" she asked sceptically.
{Yes, as long as you meet the requirements to use the lucky system, the system will fulfil all your wishes. Do you accept to bond with the lucky system?}
"Yes, I accept!" Victoria answered as the last thread of her consciousness snapped.
"Lily! Lily!" A distant voice called amidst several beeping sounds. Victoria felt someone shaking her awake, and she could hear hurried footsteps around her as the voice kept calling.
"Lily! Are you alright? Are you awake? Stay with me," the voice drew closer. Victoria was about to complain about the noise when she felt a sharp, numbing pain in her chest and head and a weakness she had never experienced all over her body.
{Soul transfer complete}
{Lucky system successfully bonds with Victoria Hamilton, now known as Lily Turner}
{Lucky system level 0, welcomes the host to a new life and wishes the host uses the second chance wisely as there may be no other after this} the mechanical voice announced as Victoria awakened in Lily's body and she realised she was in a hospital connected to several machines. She looked around cautiously and muttered hoarsely, "What is happening?"
"It's a miracle that you were able to make it; for a minute, your heart stopped, and we thought we lost you; you scared me." A middle-aged woman sobbed as Lily stared at her blankly, not knowing who she was or how to answer her. "How are you feeling? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? Do you need me to get you anything?" She continued to ask, but Lily remained quiet, trying her best to make sense of what was happening.
"What is going on? Who are you?" she asked, which shocked both the doctor and the middle-aged woman. "It's me, your mother; did you forget?" The middle-aged woman asked, looking from her daughter, whose body had been occupied by Victoria, to the doctor, "My mother?" Victoria replied calmly.
The middle-aged woman turned to the doctor with fresh tears and said, "Doctor, you have to check properly; why does my daughter not recognise me?"
The doctors soothed her while making preparations to conduct tests on Lily's brain to check for any signs of amnesia. "It's common for people who hit their head during an accident to have amnesia; we will check if it's temporary or permanent, although our previous checkup showed that she doesn't have any amnesia," the doctor reported.
The more Victoria listened to them, the more confused she became; she couldn't wrap her head around how poisoning became a head accident.
'Why am I in the hospital?' 'Was someone able to save me in time?' she pondered as the doctor checked her vitals. "Your daughter was able to survive by sheer luck; it's a miracle, but now she is still weak and unable to do a lot of things, so you should be careful and not stimulate her a lot. Give her some time to rest," the doctor instructed, and she left to prepare for the brain test.
Victoria closed her eyes, pretending to sleep, so she could communicate with the mechanical voice in her head, "What happened, and why am I here? Did you save me?" Although she wasn't sure the voice would still be there, if it was, she knew it would be able to provide answers to her confusion.
{The host should relax and ask one question at a time. I am the lucky system at level 0. Since you bonded with me, I was able to transfer your soul into the body of a young lady, Lily Turner. You don't have to worry; she willingly gave up her body for you in exchange for you taking care of her family and helping her fulfil her wish to be a successful fashion designer.} The system explained.
"You were the voice in my head when I was about to die?" she asked curiously. "And your name is Lucky System?"
{Yes, I am. I am a programmed system that has been created to help people fulfil their dying wishes. I noticed your strong will to live and your thirst for revenge and came to your aid.}
"Then what do you want in exchange for saving me?" Victoria asked sceptically. Having been in the business world for a long time, she naturally knew there were no free favours anywhere; everyone did things for their benefit. She's even more guarded now that her family betrayed her and her late mother.
As she thought about the cause of her and her late mother's deaths, rage bubbled within her once again, and she wished her father, his wife, and their two children's deaths.
{The hostess shouldn't be in haste; you will have plenty of opportunities to take revenge on your enemies. As for what I want, through helping you, I will be able to level up and get more access to the information that my creator left behind for me while also ranking up amongst other systems.} The system explained calmly.
Victoria thought about the information and nodded, accepting that she was like a game character who levelled up through tasks, except it was the system levelling up in this case. "Then what would happen to the original owner of the body?" She asked curiously, knowing that a body couldn't house two souls.
{The original soul had already left; she was plotted against by her classmates so that she wouldn't join the national fashion competition as the school representative}
As the system explained itself, Victoria came to understand the whole situation. The name of her new identity is Lily Turner, a 21-year-old fashion college student who was top in her class and liked by her teachers. However, due to her humble and poor background, she was ostracised by her classmates, who were mostly from rich families. They saw her as a stain and as a person undeserving of being in their presence due to her social standing.
She was hated by all her classmates for her amazing talent and hard work, and she was constantly schemed against, to discredit her work in front of the teachers.
Her roommate, who also happened to be the young Miss of the family her father and mother worked for, couldn't swallow her hatred after she learned that Lily had been chosen by the school to represent them on a national level against other fashion schools.
'How could a country bumpkin and a poor good for nothing be chosen over them' were the thoughts of her classmates after the list was released.
Merissa conspired against her with some of their other classmates to get her drunk, and afterwards, they pushed her off the dorm stairs. Although they didn't intend for the injury to be much, Lily ended up in a life-threatening situation and she hit her head heavily on the iron pole by the stairs. She was quickly rushed to the school clinic, where they performed first aid, before being rushed to a bigger hospital for better treatment.
But she passed away, and that was how Victoria was able to occupy her body.
Victoria realised that the ragged, tired-looking woman sitting beside her bed was the mother of the owner of the body. She looked at the woman with pity and determination to avenge her dead daughter.
"Don't worry, since you lent me your body, I will avenge you and fulfil your dreams beyond your imagination! You will not regret leaving your family in my care!" Victoria promised
Victoria soon got used to her newly acquired identity as Lily Turner. Under the intense care of her mother and younger brother, she got better and was finally discharged after a month of being in the hospital. During this time, her roommate, Merissa, had come to apologise for her clumsiness, and to show her sincerity, her family offered to pay the hospital bill.
Victoria had nothing against them paying, but she was determined to take revenge on her on behalf of the previous owner of the body. Once the doctors were done giving their instructions about what to do and what not to do, Victoria was finally released to go home. Her eyes watered upon stepping out of the hospital and she breathed in the fresh air.
She appreciated the second chance at life that she was given and promised to cherish it, which is why she hadn't bothered herself about learning about the situation in Hamilton's family and company and only focused on recovering and getting to know her family.
As they walked towards the parking lot, she noticed several paparazzi gathered at the entrance of the private parking lot that belonged to the VIP patients of the hospital.
The reporters surrounded the black car, leaving no room for the passengers to step out of the car. Victoria was a bit curious about the identity of the person in the car, but she was already tired from walking, and she couldn't stand to watch for long. Besides, her family was still waiting for her.
"Are you okay? I can carry you. If you are too tired to walk," Adams, Lily's younger brother, offered, as he noticed that she slowed down, Lily shook her head. "No, I've been in a place for so long, I can walk myself in such small a distance I have to practice being on my feet again," she replied with a polite smile. Upon getting to a black car, a middle-aged man stepped out with a guilty look on his face. She immediately saw the resemblance between him and the owner of the body and realised he was the father.
Baffled that she hadn't seen him while she was in the hospital, Victoria asked the system. "Is the relationship between the father and daughter bad?"
{No, Lily has a good relationship with her whole family, she has always been a good child, but he wasn't allowed off work because your mother had already taken a leave to take care of you. He was only allowed a few hours to pick you up} The system clarified, and Victoria felt even more determined to be successful and help the poor people escape the claws of the rich.
'Even the servants in the Hamilton house weren't treated this badly, how else would my grandparents agree for my mom to marry that scum'
"Father," she called out as the man brought her into a hug. Victoria felt moved and hugged him back. "Thank goodness you are fine. I hope you are not mad at me for not coming to check on you." He asked, and Victoria shook her head in reply. "It's good you are here now. You look even more strained than I am." she pointed out and the man chuckled in embarrassment.
She got into the car, and they drove off to the rural area of Mecan City, where the lower-class citizens reside. She was deep in thought, watching the car zoom past the city lights and greenery.
Now that she is out of the hospital and her health has recovered, she can finally face the real world and plan her steps. She has two missions: one is to avenge her and her mother's deaths and also make sure that all of the Hamilton family goes to ruins, and the second is to make sure the owner of the body becomes rich and famous, a force to be reckoned with.
The car came to a stop in front of a shabby-looking apartment complex. Victoria scrunched up her nose in disgust at the dirt and waste that littered the hallway as they climbed up.
She was relieved to see that the inside of their apartment was a lot neater than the outer part, but even still, she felt reluctant and unwilling to live in such a shabby place. She had been brought up as a young mistress in a wealthy family and had never experienced life outside her social status.
{This is the best the family can afford after sending the daughter to an expensive fashion school, without her college expenses the family would have been able to live in a better place and afford a better living condition.} The system quickly explained, noticing the unwillingness in her heart. It was afraid she would blame it for picking such a poor family for her.
She swallowed her discomfort and went into the room belonging to Lily. It was clean and tidy. Because of her accident; the school had given her sick leave until she was okay to return, so all her things had been moved home. She sat on the twin-size bed and took in the room, and she sighed.
"This family is too poor," she complained.
{Yes, and that is why the poor girl met such a quick demise! You have to quickly do something about it. Initially, the national competition was going to bring Lily to the limelight and help her get connected to prominent companies that would employ her but now... }
"Don't worry, I will make them rich, even without the help of the national competition she would become the number one fashion designer in no time!" She picked up Lily's broken phone to check the news and see what had changed since her death.
She sneered as she read the top news. "WILLIAM HAMILTON WAS DISCHARGED AFTER SEVERAL SURGERIES TO THE BRAIN; HOWEVER, HIS SISTER, VICTORIA HAMILTON, DIDN'T MAKE IT AS SHE WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED"
She read the news about the Hamilton family and realised they had covered their murder with a sob story about how their competitors had tried to assassinate them, and only Victoria was unlucky. She exited the page and glared at the bold picture of Williams in a wheelchair being pushed around by his little sister.
"Soon! I will take back everything that is mine and send you back to the hell you crawled out of." she seemed.
She adjusted her temperament as a knock resounded on her door. Lily's mother, Chloe, came in with hot rice and chicken porridge and placed it on Lily's reading table. "The doctor said you can't eat anything greasy or spicy, and you can only eat mild food for now," the mother explained.
"Thank you, Mother," she appreciated, and Chloe smiled lovingly. Soon, her smile disappeared, and she sat beside Lily. "About your accident..." she trailed off as she looked into her daughter's eyes.
"It's fine; I will recover soon, and I will be able to go to school again, even if I don't go I will pursue my dreams and make you proud... I know we are powerless now, and there is no way we can press charges against them," Lily explained, and tears fell from her mother's face. Lily had always been an understanding child, which always made her parents feel guilty about not giving her the best like her mates.
The mother nodded and left the room after urging her to eat the porridge while it was still hot. Victoria quickly ate the food and got to work; she had already wasted one month, and she could no longer wait.
With Lily's broken phone, she searched for information about the current financial market and how she could earn a quick buck to invest in some businesses.
Being a hacker in her past life, she knows the best place to get quick money. She created a profile, named it 'Sinful' and entered the secret website for hackers to see the job listings they had.
At the top of the website is a job listing for tens of thousands of dollars with some promised bonuses. Lily clicked on it and read the information. The lister wants a hacker to test their company's firewall and fix whatever mistake or loophole was there. Lily frowned as she realised the job was too simple for the pay. She went to the comment section of the job to read the comments.
"I couldn't even crack the firewall; it's too difficult."
"I don't think there is anyone who can break that firewall!"
"My software almost crashed when I tried to force my way in."
Lily got curious as she read the comments and decided to take the job. She had always been up for challenges and that was how she always succeeded in her past life. "If I fix the problem, I get paid, and if I don't, I have something new to learn."
