The Price of an Inheritance

Author: : My Sweet Super Wife
Genre: Billionaires
My whole world revolved around Ethan Vanderbilt, the wealthy heir, and our shared dream of a life in Aspen. Our future, however, was conditional: he first had to secure his family's multi-billion dollar inheritance by having children with another woman, his childhood friend Brittany Hayes. I became his secret, patient mistress, waiting in the shadows for my turn. They had their first child, then another, and I was forced into the degrading role of nanny to his legitimate heirs, living under the Vanderbilt family's scorn. Then, the unthinkable happened: I became pregnant with Ethan's child. But a devastating fall during a desperate hike ended everything; I lost our baby. His powerful family, the Vanderbilts, saw my immense loss not with compassion, but as a convenient solution to their "problem." They coldly denied me anesthesia for the D&C, subjecting me to a brutal, agonizing procedure that left me not only physically and emotionally shattered but also likely infertile. Ethan, lost in his new "perfect family" facade, retreated, leaving me trapped in their lavish prison, enduring vile taunts from his children. How could the man I loved, who swore he'd choose me, allow such unspeakable barbarity, treating my body and my profound grief with such callous indifference? And how could his spoiled son, EJ, deliberately destroy my last precious link to my deceased mother-a treasured voice recorder-right under his father's passive gaze? As I lay bleeding, broken by that final act of cruelty, a rugged stranger, a man from the mountains, appeared at the door like a forgotten dream. He was my unlikely deliverer, walking into my nightmare, ready to pull me from the wreckage and finally help me reclaim a life I thought was lost forever.

Introduction

His powerful family, the Vanderbilts, saw my immense loss not with compassion, but as a convenient solution to their "problem."

They coldly denied me anesthesia for the D&C, subjecting me to a brutal, agonizing procedure that left me not only physically and emotionally shattered but also likely infertile.

Chapter 1

Sarah Miller stared out the window.

The city lights blurred below.

She wasn't seeing them.

She was seeing Aspen, Colorado.

Snow on the mountains, a small cabin, a fireplace.

Ethan Vanderbilt beside her.

That was the dream.

Their dream.

Ethan.

Her Ethan.

He loved her, she knew he did.

He told her so, many times.

But his family, the Vanderbilts, they were old money, powerful.

They had plans for Ethan, plans that didn't include a freelance nature photographer with a love for hiking and not much else.

So Ethan had made a deal with his family.

And then he had made a deal with her.

"Just one child, Sarah," he had pleaded, his eyes full of a love she believed in.

"With Brittany Hayes. You know her, my childhood friend. It's what my grandparents want, to secure the inheritance, the legacy."

Sarah had recoiled. Brittany. Socially prominent, beautiful, everything Sarah wasn't in their eyes.

"Then we're free," Ethan had promised, holding her tight. "After the baby is born, we'll go straight to Aspen. We'll elope. Just you and me."

Sarah had agreed.

For love. For their future.

She would wait.

Brittany had the baby, a boy. Ethan Junior, they called him EJ.

Sarah saw the photos. A perfect Vanderbilt heir.

She waited for Ethan to come to her, to say, "It's done. Let's go."

He came, but the words were different.

"Sarah, I'm so sorry," he'd said, his face etched with a weariness that tugged at her heart.

"EJ... he's so small. He needs his father. My grandparents... they're watching. I can't just leave now."

"When, Ethan?" she had asked, her voice barely a whisper. The Aspen dream felt a little further away.

"Three years," he promised. "Just three years. Then he'll be older. It'll be easier. I swear it, Sarah. Aspen is still our future."

Three years.

She had nodded, tears stinging her eyes.

She would wait. For Ethan. For Aspen.

She loved him. That was enough.

For now.

Chapter 2

One thousand four hundred and sixty Aspen sunrises.

That's how Sarah counted the days.

Four years had passed since Ethan's three-year promise.

Four years of waiting.

Four years of seeing Ethan less and less, his visits filled with hurried apologies and strained smiles.

He was a father now, a Vanderbilt father.

Sarah had become a shadow in his life, a secret he kept.

He found her in her small apartment, the one he paid for.

He looked older, more tired than ever.

"Sarah," he began, and she knew. Another delay. Another broken piece of their dream.

"My grandparents... they're pleased with EJ. But now... they want a daughter."

Sarah stared at him, numb.

"A complete family, they call it. A boy and a girl. For the business, for appearances."

"Brittany?" she asked, her voice flat.

Ethan nodded, unable to meet her eyes. "They're already trying."

"And Aspen?" The word felt like ash in her mouth.

"Soon, Sarah, I promise. After this. This is the last thing, I swear. Then we're free."

He reached for her, but she stepped back.

"What am I supposed to do, Ethan? Just keep waiting?"

"I know it's hard," he said, his voice low. "But I love you. Never doubt that."

Love. The word felt hollow now.

She had become a nanny to EJ during those four years.

Ethan had arranged it.

"He needs a gentle influence," Ethan had said. "Someone who... understands."

So Sarah spent her days in the Vanderbilt mansion, under the cold eyes of Mrs. Peterson, the housekeeper, and the disdainful gaze of the Vanderbilts Sr. when they visited.

EJ was a spoiled, difficult child, already reflecting the family's attitude towards her. He called her "the sad lady."

Then, the unthinkable happened.

Sarah missed her period.

A test confirmed it.

She was pregnant. With Ethan's child.

A small, terrified flutter of hope sparked within her. Maybe this would change things. Maybe this was their chance.

She told Ethan, her hands trembling.

His face went pale. Not with joy, but with a dismay that cut her to the core.

"Oh, God, Sarah," he whispered. "This... this is not good."

"Not good?"

"My grandparents," he stammered. "They just found out Brittany is pregnant again. They're... they're ecstatic. They said this third grandchild from Brittany will solidify the new business merger."

A third grandchild. From Brittany.

Sarah's tiny spark of hope died.

Ethan looked at her, his eyes pleading for understanding she couldn't give.

"This complicates everything," he said.
