The Price of His "Parting Gift"

Author: : Jv Lingxian
Genre: Romance
The Aspen snow fell, mirroring the blanket of happiness cocooning Ava Reed as she drove to Ethan Hayes' s mansion, a drone – her heartfelt anniversary gift – beside her. Three years of love, whispered promises, and shared dreams were shattered when she overheard Ethan tell his friends she was just a "fun accessory," a "fling" he was ready to discard with a paltry directing gig as a "parting gift." The laughter that followed was ugly, turning her world to ice. She burst in, confronted him, and threw his cruel words back, walking out on the man who had reduced their love to a transaction. But the humiliation didn' t end there. He gave her personal gift to Seraphina Vance, his "real" fiancée, who then flaunted it and the film role Ava was meant to have. How could the man she loved be so indifferent, so actively cruel? How could her devotion be twisted into a casual deception? The public smear campaign that followed, orchestrated by Ethan and Seraphina, painted her as a desperate, unstable ex, ruining her career. She was adrift, lost, her entire identity systematically dismantled. Just as she reached her breaking point, a mysterious invitation arrived, leading her to a shocking truth that would not only reclaim her name and fortune but force Ethan to confront the devastating consequences of his betrayal.

The Aspen snow fell, mirroring the blanket of happiness cocooning Ava Reed as she drove to Ethan Hayes' s mansion, a drone – her heartfelt anniversary gift – beside her.

Three years of love, whispered promises, and shared dreams were shattered when she overheard Ethan tell his friends she was just a "fun accessory," a "fling" he was ready to discard with a paltry directing gig as a "parting gift."

The laughter that followed was ugly, turning her world to ice.

Chapter 1

The snow was falling thick and fast in Aspen, covering everything in a perfect white blanket. It looked like a scene from a movie, the kind of romantic fantasy Ava Reed usually only got to create on screen. But this was real. She clutched the steering wheel of her rental car, her heart thumping with anticipation. Three years. Three years with Ethan Hayes.

She pulled up to his mansion, an architectural marvel of glass and dark wood that seemed to rise out of the mountain itself. The lights were on, casting a warm, inviting glow. For their anniversary, he had insisted she fly out. He said he had a surprise.

Ava smiled to herself, grabbing the sleek, custom-designed case from the passenger seat. She had a surprise for him, too. Inside was a drone, the 'Aura One' , a piece of technology she had poured her heart and soul into designing. It was more than a gift, it was a piece of her, a blend of her artistic eye and his world of tech.

She imagined his reaction, the way his eyes would light up when he saw its capabilities. She walked up the heated stone pathway, the cold air biting at her cheeks but failing to cool the warmth inside her. She let herself in with the key he' d given her, her boots silent on the marble floor.

"Ethan?" she called out, her voice echoing slightly in the grand foyer.

Silence.

Maybe he was hiding, planning to jump out and surprise her. A small smile played on her lips as she set the drone case down and crept further into the house, following the low murmur of voices coming from his study.

She pushed the door open just a crack, ready to announce her arrival, but the words she heard made her freeze.

"...can' t believe you' ve kept her around for three years," a voice she recognized as one of Ethan' s friends, Mark, was saying. "You' re not actually serious about this indie filmmaker, are you?"

A deep, familiar chuckle followed. It was Ethan' s. "Serious? Come on, Mark. She' s been fun. A good-looking accessory, you know? But she' s starting to get ideas. She thinks this is leading somewhere."

Ava' s breath caught in her throat. Her hand trembled on the doorknob.

"So what' s the plan?" another friend asked. "You can' t just string her along forever. Not with the Vance deal on the table."

"The plan is to let her down easy," Ethan said, his voice smooth and dismissive. "I' ll give her a little project, some low-budget film to direct. A parting gift. She' ll be so grateful for the 'opportunity' she won' t even realize she' s been dumped."

The men laughed. The sound was harsh, ugly.

"Trophy wife material, she is not," Ethan added, his voice laced with a mockery that cut deeper than any knife. "She' s a fling. That' s all she ever was."

The warmth that had filled Ava just moments before vanished, replaced by a chilling cold that had nothing to do with the Aspen snow. The three years, the whispered promises, the shared dreams-it was all a lie. A game. She was an accessory he was planning to discard.

Her eyes fell to the drone case she had left in the foyer. The gift felt stupid now, a painful symbol of her own naivety. She had poured her love and talent into that machine, believing it was for the man she loved. In his eyes, it was probably just another cheap trinket from a woman he was using.

A wave of nausea washed over her, followed by a surge of pure, cold anger. She wouldn't be his pathetic, grateful charity case.

She took a deep breath, straightened her back, and pushed the door open wide.

The laughter in the room died instantly. Three pairs of eyes-Mark, the other friend, and Ethan-stared at her, their faces a mixture of shock and guilt.

Ethan recovered first, a practiced, charming smile spreading across his face. "Ava. You' re here. I was just about to call you."

Ava' s gaze was fixed on him, ignoring the others completely. She walked into the room, her steps measured and deliberate. She didn' t shout. She didn' t cry. Her voice, when she spoke, was shockingly calm.

"I heard everything," she said.

The smile on Ethan' s face faltered. He stood up, taking a step toward her. "Ava, listen. You misunderstood."

"No," she said, her voice sharp. "For the first time in three years, I think I understand perfectly."

She turned, walked back into the foyer, and picked up the drone case. She brought it back into the study and placed it on his expensive mahogany desk with a soft click.

"Happy anniversary, Ethan," she said, the words tasting like poison. "We' re over."

She turned to leave.

"Wait," Ethan said, his voice losing its charm and gaining an edge of irritation. He didn't like losing control. "Don' t be so dramatic. We can talk about this."

She kept walking.

"Ava, I' m offering you a job!" he called after her, his arrogance breathtaking. "A chance to direct. Isn' t that what you want?"

She stopped at the doorway but didn' t turn around. That offer wasn't a kind gesture, it was a power move. A cheap payoff to soothe his conscience and keep her quiet. It was an insult to her talent and everything she thought they had.

"I don' t want anything from you," she said, her voice low and final.

She walked out of the study, out of the mansion, and back into the falling snow. The cold no longer bothered her. Inside, she was already frozen. A few hours later, an email landed in her inbox. It was a formal contract from one of Ethan' s subsidiary companies. The subject line read: "Directorial Offer: 'Starlight Echoes' ."

She stared at the screen, the words blurring. It was the handout he' d promised his friends. A dismissal notice disguised as a gift. She deleted it without opening the attachment.

Chapter 2

Two weeks later, Ava was in a coffee shop in LA, trying to piece her life back together. Her agent, Brenda, sat across from her, a concerned look on her face.

"So you just walked out?" Brenda asked, stirring her latte. "No discussion, no nothing?"

"There was nothing to discuss," Ava said flatly. "He made his position clear."

"Ava, he' s Ethan Hayes. You don' t just walk out on him. Think about your career. He could have been a huge help."

"I don' t want his help," Ava said.

The bell on the coffee shop door chimed, and a woman walked in, all expensive perfume and effortless confidence. She was striking, with sharp features and raven-black hair. Ava felt a flicker of recognition but couldn't place her.

The woman' s eyes scanned the room and landed on their table. She walked over, a polite but cool smile on her face. "Excuse me, you' re Ava Reed, right?"

Ava nodded, wary.

"I' m Seraphina Vance," the woman said. Her name sent a jolt through Ava. VanceTech was Ethan' s biggest rival.

"I just wanted to say, I' m a huge admirer of your early work," Seraphina continued, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. "And I' m so excited to be working with your technology."

She held up her phone, and on the screen was a picture of her holding a drone.

Ava' s drone. The Aura One.

The drone Ava had designed for Ethan. The one she' d left on his desk in Aspen.

"Ethan gave it to me," Seraphina said, as if reading her mind. Her tone was light, but the message was clear. "He said it was designed by a genius. It' s the most incredible anniversary gift I' ve ever received."

Anniversary gift. The words hit Ava with the force of a physical blow. It wasn't just that Ethan had lied and used her, he' d taken the most personal, meaningful gift she had ever given him and handed it to another woman. His real partner.

"He and I are celebrating our one-year anniversary next week," Seraphina added, her eyes gleaming with triumph. "He' s taking me to Paris."

Ava felt the blood drain from her face. Brenda shot her a worried look.

"And that little film he offered you, 'Starlight Echoes' ?" Seraphina' s smile widened. "I' m playing the lead. It' s going to be my acting debut. I can' t wait to collaborate."

Ava felt like she was suffocating. It wasn't a handout, it was a trap. A way for Ethan to keep her close, to make her watch as he flaunted his new life with Seraphina, starring in a film Ava was supposed to direct, a film that now felt like a stage for her own humiliation.

A few women at a nearby table were whispering, casting glances in their direction. Ava had always insisted on keeping her relationship with Ethan private. He' d claimed it was to protect her from the media scrutiny that came with his level of fame, to let her build her career on her own merit. Now she saw the real reason. He wasn' t protecting her, he was hiding her. He never wanted to be publicly associated with a "fling." Her secrecy had made her invisible, so now, when Seraphina stepped into the light, Ava was just a confusing shadow, easily dismissed.

"I have to go," Ava mumbled, standing up abruptly. She couldn' t breathe in here.

"It was lovely meeting you," Seraphina called after her, her voice sweet as poison.

Outside, the LA sun felt harsh and unforgiving. Ava fumbled for her phone, her hands shaking. She had to talk to him. She had to hear him explain this. She dialed his number, a number she knew by heart.

It rang once, twice, then clicked.

But it wasn't Ethan's voice that answered.

"Hello?" It was Seraphina. "Ethan' s a little busy right now. Can I take a message?"

Ava hung up without a word, the sound of her own ragged breathing loud in her ears. She leaned against the wall, the world tilting around her. He wasn't just with her, he was letting her answer his phone. It was a deliberate, cruel power play. He had cut her off completely, and he was using his new fiancée to deliver the final blow.
