Chapter 1 The Forced Marriage

Elsie's Pov

As I knelt before my Uncle, Alpha Knight, the cold, unforgiving floor beneath me seemed not to show me mercy. My heart pounded loudly in my chest as I thought of why my uncle had requested my presence.

"Elsie," my uncle's deep voice rumbled through the silence, pulling me out of my thoughts. "I've arranged a marriage for you."

His words hung in the air like a heavy storm cloud, threatening to send me flying away. My mind raced as I tried to process what he had just said. Marriage? I wasn't ready for this, not now, not ever. I opened my mouth to protest, but the words caught in my throat.

My uncle, a stern and imposing man with a salt-and-pepper beard, leaned forward, his piercing eyes locking onto mine. "This is not a negotiation, Elsie," he growled. His face was a mask of authority, and I knew better than to challenge him. In our pack, defiance meant punishment, and I had seen enough to know the consequences.

"But Uncle..." I finally managed to whisper, my voice trembling, "I'm not ready for marriage. I want to explore the world, learn more about myself before settling down."

Before I could utter another word, the back of my uncle's hand connected with my cheek, sending me sprawling to the floor. Pain radiates through my face, and tears welled up in my eyes. I clutched my stinging cheek, disbelief and humiliation washing over me.

"Never speak to me in such an obnoxious way, Elsie!" he hissed, his anger simmering just below the surface. "I am your Alpha, and my decisions are final."

I struggled to regain my composure, pushing myself up from the floor. The room spun for a moment before settling into a blurry focus. I felt a mixture of anger, frustration, and helplessness, but I knew better than to let my emotions show. My uncle was a man of authority, and in our pack, his word was law.

Taking a deep breath, I nodded in submission, though my spirit remained unbroken. "I understand, Uncle," I said, my voice quivering slightly. "I will do as you say."

He gave me a curt nod, his expression relenting just a fraction. "Good. You will marry Ethan, the son of my friend from our neighboring pack. It is a prestigious match, Elsie, one that will strengthen our pack's alliances."

I didn't dare meet his eyes again. The thought of being married off to a stranger, someone I have not chosen for myself, was suffocating. I had always imagined love leading me down the path of matrimony, not a forced union.

My uncle's warning brought me back to reality. "You will behave, Elsie," he warned, his voice low and dangerous. "On the day of your marriage, you will be a symbol of our pack's unity. If you disgrace us in any way, I won't hesitate to kill you myself."

I nodded again, this time with a heavy heart. "I won't bring shame to the pack, Uncle."

With that, he dismissed me, and I rose to my feet. I couldn't help but wonder how my life had taken such a sudden and dark turn. As I walked away, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being pushed into a cage, my dreams and desires trapped into an unknown marriage.

My heart ached as I remembered how drastically my life had changed since the death of my parents, who had been the Alpha and Luna of the Enchanted pack. They had ruled with wisdom and compassion, and their loss had left a gaping void in my heart.

My parents' reign had come to a tragic end during a brutal war with a group of relentless werewolf hunters. I could still taste salty tears as I clung to my parents, knowing they couldn't protect me anymore. In the end, they had sacrificed themselves to save me, leaving me an orphan and at the mercy of my ruthless uncle.

I couldn't help but feel like a pawn in my uncle's game, a mere object to strengthen his alliances and secure his grip on power. I knew Ethan, the manipulative son of my uncle's friend, only too well. He was as cunning as a fox, and the prospect of being with him for the rest of my life filled me with dread.

Two Weeks Later

The day I had been dreading soon arrived. The sun was out already but all I saw in the pack's territory was nothing but darkness. My heart ached as I looked out at the sprawling forest that surrounded our pack, a place where I had once found solace and freedom.

I stood in front of the mirror, dressed in the elaborate wedding gown that had been chosen for me, its lace and pearls feeling like chains that threatened to suffocate me. My reflection revealed a girl who had lost her spark, her eyes dulled by resignation.

A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. It was my cousin, Mia, who had been my confidante and source of support since my parents' death. Her eyes held sympathy as she approached me.

"Elsie, are you sure about this?" Mia whispered and gave me a hug from the back.

I turned to her, my eyes welling up with tears. "What choice do I have, Mia? Uncle made it clear, I will marry Ethan or face the consequences."

Mia took my hand in hers, her touch a fleeting comfort. "We can find a way out of this. We can't let Uncle dictate our lives."

I shook my head, tears streaming down my cheeks. "You don't understand, Mia. I can't risk bringing shame to the pack. I've seen what Uncle is capable of."

Mia's expression hardened as she understood the weight of my predicament. "Then we'll make sure you're safe, no matter what it takes. I won't let you suffer in silence, Elsie."

Her words brought a flicker of hope to my heart, but I knew the decision was going to affect me. My uncle had spies everywhere, and he had eyes that saw and ears that heard in every corner of the pack. Was I ready to oblige his decision? But then, the time had come, and I couldn't delay any longer. I stepped out of the room, my heart heavy with the weight of my impending fate.

But as I made my way through the packhouse, I noticed a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye. It was Mia, signaling me to follow her. With a sinking feeling in my gut, I understood her plan. I had one last chance to escape this cage, and I couldn't let it slip away.

Silently, we slipped out of the packhouse, moving through the shadows slowly and carefully. Mia led me to a hidden path that would take me beyond the pack's territory, to a place where I could start anew, free from the plans my uncle had for me.

As we ventured deeper into the forest, my heart raced with a mix of fear and determination. I was leaving behind the only life I had ever known, but I couldn't bear the thought of being trapped in a loveless marriage. With every step, I felt a glimmer of hope, a flicker of freedom, and the promise of a future where I could choose my own destiny. Soon, Mia turned to me. "I'll stop here, Elsie. Take good care of yourself please. Look for a way to survive and I promise not to tell uncle about you," she assured and I nodded as she retraced her steps and turned to leave. It then dawned on me, I was all alone by myself now. But then, where was I heading to?

Chapter 2 Elsie's missing

Elsie's Pov

I ran on four paws, my senses heightened by the adrenaline coursing through my veins. My heart pounded with every stride, and my breath came out in heavy pants. I felt free for the very first time after my parent's death, yet I had no idea where I was going. But I couldn't stop. Not now. My uncle's voice echoed in my mind, his threats, his anger. I had to escape him. I had to escape the life he had planned for me.

As I raced through the wilderness, leaves and twigs crunching beneath my powerful paws, I couldn't help but think about the future he had envisioned for me. A forced marriage, a life of slavery. It was a fate I couldn't accept.

Soon, I slowed my pace just enough to glance over my shoulder. Moonlight filtered through the trees, lightening the forest in a beautiful manner. I could sense they were soon going to start looking for me and I knew they wouldn't give up so easily. But neither would I.

I needed to find a place to hide, to gather my thoughts and figure out what to do next. I veered off different paths, my keen instincts guiding me deeper into the woods. My steps were swift but unsure, guided only by the thought to escape. My uncle's demands and threats played freshly in my thoughts. He had arranged a marriage for me with Ethan, a man I barely knew, and one I knew I couldn't trust. "I can't go back," I whispered to myself, tears welling up in my eyes. "I won't." I won't return to the pack, I won't get married to Ethan.

There was no choice for me but to keep moving, keep running, and hope that whatever pursued me would eventually give up. I was running for my life, and nothing else mattered.

Unknowingly to me, there was a hill ahead of me that I couldn't see properly since I was lost in thought. Without warning, my foot mistakenly hit against a root and I tumbled forward. Time seemed to slow as I descended then, a sickening realization hit me, I was falling from a high mountain. Panic surged through me, and I tried swinging my arms, desperate for something to grab onto. But there was nothing but empty air.

With a loud crash, I landed into an icy river. Pain radiates through my body as I struggle to regain my senses. I gasped for air, my lungs aching from the fall. I frantically looked around, trying to get my bearings. As I struggled to the surface, gasping for air, I knew that I wouldn't survive this fall. My body ached, and my vision blurred.

I fought to stay afloat, kicking and thrashing in the water but the current from the water was pulling me downstream, away from the shore. Desperation welled up inside me, and I mustered all my strength to swim against the relentless flow. But my efforts were futile, and exhaustion overcame me.

As the darkness of the water closed in around me, I couldn't help but reflect on my cruel fate. My life had been a series of love and losses, and now it was ending in this cold, unforgiving river. I had always believed that death was the only constant in my life.

As I kept struggling, the water pushed and pulled, dragging me deeper into its cold embrace.

Time seemed to stretch as I fought for survival. Thoughts raced through my mind, memories of happier times and dreams I always wanted. I soon closed my eyes, surrendering to how my life was ending.

Just when I thought all was lost, something unexpected happened. I felt strong arms wrapped around me from behind, pulling me upwards through the water. My heart raced, hope flickering back to life. I couldn't see my rescuer, but their grip was firm and reassuring. Finally, we broke the surface, and I gasped for breath, coughing and sputtering as I clung to the person who had saved me. My vision cleared, revealing the face of my rescuer, a stranger with kind eyes and a reassuring smile.

"Are you alright?" the stranger asked with arched brows.

I nodded, unable to find my voice just yet. Tears welled up in my eyes as I managed a weak smile, "Thank you." Before I finally gave in to darkness.

Few Hours Later

I blinked and opened my groggy eyes. The world was a hazy blur at first, and my mind felt clouded, as though I had just emerged from a deep slumber. As my vision cleared, I realized that I was lying on a comfortable bed, covered by soft sheets. Panic gripped me as I tried to piece together what had happened. Where was I? How had I ended up here?

As my senses slowly returned, I realized that I was indoors. The room was cozy and warm. Confusion gripped me as I tried to piece together how I had ended up here but my head was blank. Nothing was clear to me. I suddenly noticed a presence and I turned my head to the side and then, I met with a surprising sight. A man, sitting on a chair beside the bed, his unexplainable gaze fixed on me. He had striking features, dark, wavy hair, piercing blue eyes, and a strong jawline. I suddenly had the mindset to trust him.

My voice came out in a hoarse whisper as I spoke, "Where... Where am I?"

The man's smile widened, and he leaned forward to my bed. "What's wrong? Are you afraid of something?" He replied, giving me an opposite answer. I didn't say a word and it gave him space to continue. "What were you doing on the mountain? You should be more careful."

"What do you mean?" I questioned as my mind went blank. I couldn't think of anything he was saying.

He leaned back on his chair and answered, "I mean, you were too careless on the mountain and if I hadn't saved you from the water, you could've been dead by now."

I furrowed my brow, trying to grasp the gravity of the situation. "I don't remember anything. How did I end up in the river? Why can't I remember?"

His eyes held sympathy as he spoke, "When I found you, you were barely conscious until now. If you don't remember anything, It's possible you hit your head during the fall, which could explain the memory loss. Don't worry, it might come back with time." He spoke like he knew all things and all I could do was nod my head, feeling a sense of trust in his presence. He had saved my life, after all. "Thank you for saving me. I don't know what I would have done without your help."

His smile was warm and reassuring. "You're welcome. I couldn't just leave you there," he taunted and added. "I'm Madriod by the way and if you can't remember your name, it's fine too." He sounded as if he knew me but the kindness in his eyes gave me assurance that I was safe.

As I lay there, I couldn't help but wonder about the life I had lost or at least, the memories of it. Who was I before this moment? What had led me to that treacherous mountain? The questions swirled in my mind, a puzzle I couldn't solve.

Noticing the look on my face, he conveyed, "Hello, don't stress too much about your lost memories. Sometimes, the past is a heavy burden. For now, focus on healing and getting your strength back. We can figure everything out together later."

His words were a balm to my worried heart, and I nodded in agreement. There was something about Madriod that made me feel safe. I knew I had a long journey ahead, not just to recover my memories but to uncover the secrets of the past that had led me to that river's edge.

As I closed my eyes, exhaustion pulling me back into slumber, I clung to the one thought, who am I?

Chapter 3 Else's new name

Madriod's Pov

I found the strange lady interesting. There was something about the way she spoke and her determination to hold on to her identity even in the face of amnesia. Three days had passed since I had saved her life, and each moment had been filled with a sense of wonder and curiosity. She wasn't just a good girl, she was genuinely friendly, which made our time together all the more enjoyable.

We were both seated on makeshift wooden stools, sharing a meal prepared from the meat I had hunted earlier in the day. I watched her take a bite of the roasted meat, her eyes fixed on me. Her voice was soft and filled with genuine curiosity as she broke the silence with a question, "Madriod, what were you doing out here in the forest before you saved my life?"

I swallowed a mouthful of meat before responding, "I'm a hunter. I come to these woods to find preys, to provide for myself and sometimes for my village. It's a tough life, but it's all I've known."

She nodded thoughtfully, her fingers tracing patterns in the sand beneath her. "A hunter," she mused, "that must be quite an exciting and challenging occupation."

I chuckled, leaning back against a fallen log. "Exciting, yes. Challenging, definitely. But it has its moments of peace, too. I find solace in the quiet of the forest, away from the noise of the world."

She smiled warmly, her eyes reflecting the flickering flames of the campfire. "I can see that. It's peaceful here, with nothing but the sounds of nature around us."

We continued to eat in silence for a while, the only sounds being the crackling fire and the distant hoot of an owl. The forest had a way of making you feel both insignificant and connected to something greater than yourself. Suddenly an idea of giving her a name that I can address came crumbling into my mind and I thought of giving her my late mother's name. "I'll call you Rosa from now on until you're finally able to remember your real name, if that's fine with you."

She nodded her head accepting my request. "Rosa," she called and added. "It's nice. I'll accept that."

I smiled at her and we continued eating until Rosa leaned in closer, her eyes locking onto mine. "Madriod, can I ask you something personal?"

I nodded, intrigued by her question. "Of course, Rosa. You can ask me anything."

She hesitated for a moment before finally speaking. "Do you ever get lonely out here, away from your village and the people you know?"

I considered her question, realizing that I hadn't thought about it in a long time. "Sometimes," I admitted. "Being alone can be both a blessing and a curse. There are days when I yearn for the company of my fellow villagers, for the laughter and shared stories around a campfire. But then there are moments like this, when I feel like I'm exactly where I'm meant to be."

Rosa's eyes softened with understanding. "I can relate to that," she said quietly. "I've been trying to remember who I am, where I belong, but in these past few days, I've also found a sense of peace in our time together. It's strange, but I'm grateful for it."

"I'm glad you're not feeling all alone after you lost your memories. Trust me, you will get back to your state soon," I assured her, knowing my words meant everything to her.

Later In The Evening

I returned from my hunting expedition as I always did, carrying the fruits of my labor. I approached my campsite, expecting to see Rosa, waiting for me with her infectious smile just as she had always been there to greet me anytime I returned from hunting. But this time, something was amiss. There was no sign of her.

"Rosa? Rosa, where are you?!" I began to call upon her name as fear took over me. Why couldn't I see her around?

Silence answered my plea. The forest remained quiet, as if it were holding its breath. My heart pounded in my chest as I began to search the area around the campsite. The fire pit still smoldered, and my supplies were neatly arranged, but Rosa was nowhere to be found.

My eyes darted around, scanning the familiar surroundings. Had she wandered off to collect firewood? It was unlike her to be gone for so long without a word. Fear gripped me as I considered the possibilities. I needed to find her, and quickly.

As I stepped away from the campsite, my eyes fell upon a set of footprints in the soft forest floor, partially concealed by the fallen leaves. They were fresh, and they led away from our campsite. My heart sank as I knelt down to examine them. There were multiple footprints, not just Rosa's.

I muttered to myself, "This doesn't make sense. Who could have been here?"

The next thing I decided on was to follow the trail of footprints, desperate to find any clue about Rosa's whereabouts. Each step felt heavy as I ventured deeper into the forest, my senses heightened, and my instincts on high alert. The footprints led me through the dense woods, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.

After what felt like an eternity of tracking, the footprints eventually led me out of the woods and into the outskirts of a nearby village. I couldn't help but wonder if Rosa had wandered into this village, but there was no sign of her. I needed answers, and the best place to start was to ask the villagers if they had seen her.

I spotted an elderly woman sitting outside her thatched-roof hut, busy weaving a basket. I approached her, trying to conceal my growing panic.

"Excuse me," I called, my voice trembling slightly. "Have you seen a young woman named Rosa? She has long dark hair and bright blue eyes. She was with me in the forest, but she's gone missing."

The woman paused her weaving, her weathered face creasing into a thoughtful expression. After a moment, she spoke in a soft voice, "I haven't seen anyone like that around here, young man. But I did notice some strangers passing through earlier today. They had a girl with them, matching your description."

My heart leaped with a mix of relief and concern. "Where did they go? Can you tell me?"

The elderly woman pointed down a narrow path that led deeper into the village. "They headed in that direction, towards the center of the village. But be careful, young man. Those strangers didn't seem like ordinary travelers."

I thanked the woman and followed the path she indicated, my footsteps quickening as I approached the heart of the village. What had happened to Rosa? Who were these strangers, and why had they taken her? Will I ever see Rosa again?
