When Rex discovers Vanya's secret-twin sons he never knew-he must fight to win her trust and reclaim their love. Will their second chance be enough to heal the wounds of the past?

Chapter 1 PROLOGUE

The scent of vanilla candles filled the air, mingling with the faint aroma of the chocolate cake Vanya Moon had baked herself. The dining table in her small apartment was decorated with gold balloons and streamers. A carefully wrapped box sat in the center, containing the custom watch she'd spent months saving for.

Tonight, she had everything planned. It wasn't just Rex Patterson's birthday-it was the night she was going to tell him their lives were about to change forever.

She glanced at her reflection in the mirror one last time, smoothing down her navy-blue dress. A tiny flutter of nerves tickled her stomach, but she brushed it aside. Rex loved her. She was certain of it.

Her phone buzzed, interrupting her thoughts.

"Are you on your way?" she asked, her voice filled with excitement.

There was a pause. "I'll see you soon," Rex said, his tone oddly curt. Before she could ask what was wrong, the line went dead.

*********

THREE HOURS LATER

The candles had burned halfway down, the cake untouched. Vanya's excitement had given way to confusion, then worry. She dialed Rex's number again, but it went straight to voicemail.

Her phone chimed. She lunged for it, hoping it was him.

It wasn't. It was a text.

"Check the kitchen counter."

Frowning, Vanya walked over to find a single envelope propped against the wall. Her name was scrawled across the front in Rex's familiar handwriting.

Her fingers shook as she opened it, dread settling in her chest like a stone.

"Vanya, I can't do this anymore. Please don't look for me. I'm sorry. -Rex"

She blinked, reading it again, then again, hoping the words would change.

"What...?" she whispered, her breath hitching.

She grabbed her phone, redialing his number. This time, the robotic voice on the other end crushed her hope entirely: "The number you are trying to reach is no longer in service."

"No," she whispered, shaking her head. "No, no, no!"

Her heart pounded as she grabbed her coat and keys, her mind a blur of questions and fears.

*********

The imposing iron gates to Rex's estate were as cold and unyielding as the security guards standing in front of them.

"I need to see Rex," Vanya said, desperation lacing her voice.

The taller of the two guards shook his head. "Mr. Patterson left strict instructions not to let anyone in."

"Not anyone! I'm his girlfriend!" she snapped, clutching the bars of the gate.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," the guard replied, his tone firm but not unkind.

Vanya stepped back, tears stinging her eyes. "Please," she begged. "I need to talk to him. There's been a mistake."

"There's nothing I can do."

Her knees felt weak, but she refused to let them buckle. She stared at the mansion in the distance, her chest heaving with sobs. The man she loved, the man who had promised her forever, had disappeared without an explanation.

Her trembling hand fell to her stomach as she felt more than the pain of heartbreak.

*********

FIVE YEARS LATER

The sound of clinking glasses filled the conference room as Vanya Moon exchanged firm handshakes with the investors seated around the table. She exuded calm confidence in her tailored black blazer, but beneath her polished exterior, the pressure of the moment weighed heavily.

"Thank you for your time, gentlemen," she said, her tone crisp.

The investors nodded, but their expressions were hesitant. They'd heard the whispers about MoonTech's financial troubles, and the doubts in their eyes made it clear that Vanya had a steep hill to climb.

As the room emptied, her younger brother Damon leaned closer to her, his face etched with worry.

"Vanya, you don't have to do this anymore," he said, his voice low. "You've already sacrificed so much for me-for the company. It's not your responsibility to fix this."

She turned to him, her dark eyes blazing with determination. "You think I'm just going to walk away?"

"Vanya-"

She cut him off, gripping his hand tightly. "Listen to me, Damon. I'm not giving up until you're debt-free, even if it means I have to-"

Her words were interrupted by the sound of the TV in the corner of the room.

"Breaking news," the anchor announced. The screen cut to a photo of a man with sharp features, perfectly styled hair, and a smirk that made Vanya's stomach churn.

Rex Patterson.

Her breath hitched as the image flashed across the screen. The voice of the anchor continued, oblivious to the storm raging inside her.

"Billionaire mogul Rex Patterson is making headlines yet again as investors pour billions into Patterson Empire, citing his unmatched vision and leadership. Sources say this deal could mark one of the largest investments in the company's history."

Vanya stared at the screen, her pulse pounding in her ears. Rex looked smug and untouchable, his wealth and power on full display for the world to see.

Her grip on the edge of the table tightened as a bitter resolve hardened in her chest.

"Vanya," Damon said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You've done enough. You don't have to-"

She cut him off, her voice firm and unwavering.

"Even if it means I have to dine with the devil himself."

Chapter 2 ONE: THE CONTRACT

"You can't be serious." I blink, unsure if I heard him correctly.

"I'm deadly serious." Rex leans back again, folding his arms over his chest. "A marriage contract. Nothing personal. You'll get what you need, and I'll get what I want. It's a win-win"

Five years. It's been five long years since he walked away from me, from everything we stood for. Yet here I am, sitting across from Rex Patterson, the man who once owned my heart, and now owns half of my soul's misery. My palms sweat, my heart races-this is the last place I ever wanted to be. I can't believe I'm here. Yet, the thing about life is that it has a way of forcing you to face what you thought you'd escaped forever.

"Vanya Moon." His voice rumbles like thunder across the luxurious boardroom, and I fight the instinct to flinch. "This contract is the only way I can give you what you want. You give me what I want. I give you what you want. Quid pro quo."

I don't respond, though every part of me wants to. Instead, I focus on the cold, sterile feel of the glass tabletop in front of me. I wish I could ignore the heat rising between us, the tension that pulls at my skin as though we're still the same people who once shared whispered promises in the darkness. But we're not.

"Five years, Vanya," Rex says softly this time, leaning back in his chair. His steel-blue eyes lock onto mine as if daring me to look away. "And you're still just as beautiful. I thought you would have moved on by now."

I let out a slow breath, trying to ground myself in the present moment. "I have moved on. Haven't you?"

His lips twist into a smile that feels like a challenge. "Moved on from you? Hardly." He pauses, his gaze flickering briefly to the papers on the table between us. "But enough about the past. I'm here for business."

Business. That's the word he uses as if it's all that ever mattered between us. He didn't even say my name right at that moment. It's almost as if he forgot that we were once more than just business transactions.

I set my jaw, my heart refusing to cooperate with the logic my brain is trying to impose. "What's this about, Rex?"

He leans forward slightly, his gaze never leaving mine. The room suddenly feels too small for the two of us. "It's simple, really. Your brother needs a multimillion-dollar investment in his company to escape bankruptcy. I need a wife.

"It's only for a year anyway, Vanya. You're not the same woman I knew. I know you'd rather work nine jobs than be with me again. But I'm offering you a way out. You need me."

His words hit me like a slap across the face. He's right in a way-my life isn't perfect. After all these years of struggling to rebuild myself, I'm still barely afloat. But I'm not about to let him think I need him. Not after everything.

"Five years ago," I begin, my voice a little colder than I intended, "I didn't need you then either. And I sure as hell don't need you now."

Rex tilts his head slightly, and his gaze softens. There's something in his eyes, something that flickers like a fire threatening to burn down the walls I've so carefully built. I know that look. It's the same one that had me falling for him the first time.

"Vanya," he says softly, his voice suddenly lower, more intimate. "I never wanted to hurt you. You know that, right?"

I swallow hard, my throat tightening. "If you didn't want to hurt me, you wouldn't have done it. You wouldn't have left me with nothing but broken dreams and a shattered heart."

His jaw clenches, and for the first time, I see a flicker of regret in his eyes. But it's too late for that. I've buried the pain, hidden it away so deep that I've forgotten what it feels like to let someone in again.

"So, what's this about, Rex? What's the catch?" I try to sound indifferent, but my voice wavers despite my best efforts.

He opens the folder between us and slides a contract across the table toward me. The papers are neatly stacked, the sharp, cold edge of his offer cutting through the space between us.

"There's no catch," he says smoothly. "We both get what we want. A mutually beneficial arrangement. You'll be my wife in name only-no emotional attachment. You'll live in my house, attend events with me, and you'll have the freedom to do whatever you want. In return, I'll provide you with financial security. And I'll help you get your brother's life back on track."

I stare at the contract. It's too easy, too perfect. It feels like a trap-one I can't escape. And yet, I know what he's offering is more than just an opportunity for me. It's a chance to be closer to him, a chance to be in his world again, to feel the things I tried so hard to forget.

But can I really do this? Can I go back to him, knowing what he did? Knowing how he abandoned me when I needed him the most?

I look up at him, his eyes watching me with that intensity that always made me feel like I was the only person in the room. The only person in his world.

"You think this is easy?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper. "You think this won't destroy me all over again?"

He's silent for a moment, his gaze never leaving mine. "I'm not asking you to forgive me, Vanya. I'm asking you to survive. This is your chance to prove to yourself that you're not the same woman you were. You don't need me. You never did. But I can make sure you never fall that far again."

I want to reject him. I want to throw this contract back at him and walk out of this room. But I can't. Not just because of my brother's company, but because deep down, a part of me-the part that I thought had died five years ago-still wants him.

And as much as it scares me, as much as it hurts, I know that the only way to truly let go of him is to face him again. To take control of my own fate. But this time, on my terms.

"I'll sign it," I say, my voice firm, despite the whirlwind of emotions inside me. "But don't think for a second that this changes anything between us. We're just business. Nothing more."

Rex smiles, a flicker of triumph in his eyes. "We'll see about that, Vanya."

I pick up the pen, my hand trembling slightly, and sign my name at the bottom of the page.

As I sign, I realize that I've just made the biggest mistake of my life-or maybe the biggest mistake of his.

And I'm not sure which one scares me more.

Chapter 3 TWO: THE PRICE

Signing the contract with Rex Patterson was supposed to be a way to get what I wanted-to survive. But as the ink dries on the page, I realize I've signed my soul away, and the consequences might be more than I can handle. I'm about to learn just how far Rex will go to make me his-again.

*********

I wake up in a bed that doesn't feel like mine. The sheets are too soft, the scent of expensive perfume lingering in the air, and for a moment, I forget where I am. Then it all rushes back. The contract. The marriage. The deal with Rex Patterson.

I sit up quickly, panic rising in my chest, only to be greeted by a sharp ache in my head. I must've slept through the night, but I have no idea how. Last night feels like a blur, a haze of emotions and decisions made in the heat of the moment. I signed the contract. I agreed to marry him.

What the hell was I thinking?

My eyes dart around the lavish bedroom. The walls are lined with dark wood, the furniture sleek and modern, a far cry from the small apartment I've been scraping by in for the past few years. This isn't my world. It never was, and it never will be.

I climb out of bed and head for the bathroom, hoping the cold water will shock me back into some semblance of clarity. As I wash my face, I hear the faintest sound-footsteps approaching. My stomach drops.

He's here.

I know it's him before I see him. Rex Patterson doesn't need to announce his presence. He fills the room with his power, his presence overwhelming everything around him.

"Good morning," he says, his deep voice smooth like silk but laced with something harder underneath. I turn to face him, surprised at how effortlessly he's entered without knocking. But I'm not surprised, not really. He's always been like this-dominant, arrogant, and used to getting what he wants.

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. "You didn't have to come in here, Rex. I'm perfectly capable of-"

"Of what?" He smirks, his eyes narrowing as he looks me up and down. I can feel the heat of his gaze, and for a moment, I wonder if he's seeing me the way he did all those years ago. "Getting dressed? It's already done. Your clothes are in the wardrobe. I've already taken care of everything."

Everything. His voice carries a cold finality, as if my life now belongs to him-body and soul.

I turn away from him, determined to regain some semblance of control. "I didn't agree to this for the clothes, Rex. I signed the contract because I need your help. Not because I want to live in your world."

He laughs softly, the sound low and dangerous. "And yet, here you are, Vanya. You've made your choice."

I want to scream at him, to tell him that this is all a mistake, but the words die in my throat. I made this choice. No one forced me. But I never imagined what it would feel like to wake up in his world, to realize how much he still controls everything around me, how much he could destroy me if he wanted to.

"You'll get used to it," he says, his voice softer now, almost... comforting? I try to shake the thought away. Rex Patterson doesn't comfort anyone. "But for now, we have a lot of work to do. You'll be attending your first event as my wife tonight. I hope you're ready."

I freeze. "What do you mean, my first event?"

"The gala. You didn't think I was going to let you hide away in here, did you?" He steps closer, his body filling the doorway, making it impossible for me to escape. His presence is suffocating, but there's an edge of something else-something dangerous and electrifying. "We need to make a statement, Vanya. You're not just my wife on paper. You're going to be my partner. And that means showing the world exactly what you're capable of."

I swallow hard. "I don't care about your statement, Rex. I'm only here because I need your help."

His eyes narrow, a flash of something darker crossing his face. "You think I'm doing this for you?" His voice lowers, and the chill in it sends a shiver down my spine. "You're here because I want you here. This isn't about help. It's about control."

I know he's right, but I won't give him the satisfaction of knowing it. "I'm not your possession, Rex."

His lips curl into a smile, but there's nothing warm about it. "No, you're not. But you will be my wife. And don't forget that."

I turn away from him, trying to collect myself. "I need time to think about all of this. This is moving too fast."

"It's already been decided." His voice is firm, final. "You'll be at the gala, Vanya. I'll see you there."

I want to argue, to tell him that I'm not ready for whatever game he's playing. But before I can speak, he's already gone, leaving me standing there, alone in his cold, pristine mansion.

The gala is in full swing by the time I arrive, the bright lights and extravagant decorations almost too much to take in. Rex had insisted I wear the most expensive dress in his wardrobe-an off-the-shoulder black gown that feels like it was made for someone else. The crowd is buzzing with excitement, but all I feel is the weight of expectation pressing down on me.

I'm not here because I want to be. I'm here because I have no choice.

I spot Rex immediately-he stands out in any crowd, his tall, commanding figure a stark contrast to the delicate elegance of the other guests. His eyes scan the room, but when they land on me, his gaze sharpens, a slow smirk spreading across his face.

"Vanya," he says, his voice smooth as silk. "You look... breathtaking."

I force a smile, trying to mask the unease that swells inside me. "I'm glad you approve."

"You will learn to fit in, Vanya," he says, stepping closer, his hand brushing mine in a casual touch that sends a jolt of electricity through me. "I didn't bring you here just to look pretty. You're going to prove to them-to us-that you belong."

I look up at him, his dark eyes burning with something unspoken, something that makes my heart race and my stomach twist. I want to believe him. I want to believe that this arrangement, this marriage, is just a formality. That nothing will change between us.

But the way he looks at me-like I'm something he's claiming, something he's controlling-tells me this is just the beginning. Rex Patterson isn't interested in a simple, cold contract. He's interested in making me his again. And I don't know if I can survive that.

"Vanya," he murmurs, his voice low and dangerously intimate, "tonight, we make a statement. Are you ready to show them who you really are?"

I nod, even though my heart is racing, because there's no turning back now.

And somewhere deep inside, I know that the hardest part of this marriage won't be living with him-it will be falling in love with him all over again.
