Adele Williams had always known she was different. She could sense emotions before people expressed them, hear whispers of the wind that no one else noticed, and feel an unexplainable pull toward the moon. But she had spent her entire life suppressing those instincts, convincing herself she was just overly perceptive, nothing more. Tonight, however, something was different.
The air was thick with tension as she walked home through the dimly lit streets of Hollowbrook, a sleepy little town tucked away from the rest of the world. Her shift at the diner had dragged longer than expected, leaving her exhausted and eager to collapse into bed. Yet, as she approached her small cottage at the edge of town, an unsettling feeling crept up her spine... She wasn't alone.
Adele paused, gripping the strap of her bag as she scanned the tree line bordering her home. The night was silent, but her gut told her otherwise. Something- or someone- was watching her.
"Get a grip, Adele," she muttered under her breath, shaking her head as she forced herself to keep moving. But just as she reached for her keys, a low growl rumbled through the night. Her heart slammed against her ribs.
The sound was deep, guttural, predatory. Before she could react, a massive figure emerged from the shadows, moving with deadly grace. He was tall, his presence commanding, his golden eyes glowing like twin embers in the darkness.
Adele staggered back, every instinct screaming at her to run. But her feet refused to move. It wasn't fear that paralyzed her-it was something else. Something primal, ancient... inevitable.
The stranger inhaled sharply, his expression hardening as he took a step forward.
"You have no idea what you are, do you?" His voice was deep, laced with authority.
Adele swallowed, forcing herself to meet his gaze. "I don't know what you're talking about."
He tilted his head, studying her with a look of dark amusement. "You will."
Then, in the blink of an eye, he lunged. A Predator's Claim Adele barely had time to react before the stranger closed the distance between them, his movements too fast for any normal man. She yelped as he gripped her wrist, his touch searing against her skin like a brand.
"Let go of me!" she hissed, struggling against his hold.
But the moment their skin connected, a wave of heat shot through her veins, a foreign sensation that made her gasp. Her knees nearly buckled beneath her as a strange bond crackled between them, raw and electric.
The man's jaw tightened, his golden eyes burning with intensity. "You feel it, don't you?"
Adele clenched her teeth, refusing to acknowledge the undeniable force pulling her toward him. "I don't know who the hell you are, but you need to back off."
He smirked, the corner of his mouth tilting in a way that sent a shiver down her spine. "My name is Frank Robinson. And you, Adele Williams, are my mate."
Her breath hitched.
Mate.
The word echoed in her mind, foreign yet oddly familiar. Something deep within her stirred, as if awakening from a long slumber.
She shook her head violently. "That's impossible. I'm human."
Frank's expression darkened, his grip tightening just enough to make her pulse spike. "You were never human."
The ground beneath her seemed to shift, her reality fracturing with his words.
"That's not true," she whispered, but the denial tasted bitter on her tongue.
Frank exhaled, his gaze softening slightly. "Come with me. I'll show you the truth."
Panic surged through her veins. "Like hell I will."
With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Adele twisted her wrist free and bolted toward the safety of her house. But she didn't make it far.
In a blur of movement, Frank was in front of her, blocking her path with ease.
"Don't fight this," he warned.
Adele's chest heaved as she glared up at him. "And if I do?"
His golden eyes flashed. "Then I'll have no choice but to claim what's already mine."
She had no idea that tonight would be the beginning of a battle she never saw coming-one that would force her to choose between the life she knew and the fate she was born for.
Adele Williams had always trusted her instincts. They were the reason she had survived on her own for so long, the reason she had learned to read people with uncanny precision. But tonight, those same instincts were screaming at her to run.
Yet, something in Frank Robinson's presence rooted her to the spot.
The night air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, but beneath it, Adele caught something else- something musky, wild, dangerous. Her pulse thundered as she clenched her fists, staring up at the man who had just turned her world upside down.
"You're lying." Her voice was steadier than she felt.
Frank's golden eyes glowed, flickering like molten fire. "You know I'm not."
She shook her head. "I'm just... normal. I grew up in this town. I've never -"
"Never shifted," he interrupted, his tone measured. "Never understood why the full moon made your blood burn, why your senses are sharper than any human's, why you feel an unnatural pull toward the forest."
Adele opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Because he wasn't wrong.
She had felt those things. The way the moon called to her, the way she could smell a rainstorm hours before it arrived, the way she could hear a heartbeat from across a room when she concentrated.
But she had spent her entire life ignoring it.
"What do you want from me?" she demanded, forcing herself to sound defiant.
Frank's lips curled into a smirk, but there was no humor in his expression. "I told you already. You're my mate."
A shiver ran down her spine, though whether from fear or something else, she wasn't sure.
"I don't belong to you," she snapped.
Frank took a step forward, and instinctively, Adele moved back- only to find herself trapped against the wooden porch railing.
His large frame loomed over her, radiating an unnatural heat. "That's where you're wrong," he murmured. "The bond between us is written in blood, in fate itself. You can't escape it."
Adele's breath hitched. His scent surrounded her, intoxicating, even as her mind screamed to resist.
She shoved against his chest, expecting resistance. Instead, he let her push him away.
"You're not taking me anywhere," she bit out. "I don't care what kind of... bond you think exists. I have a life here. I don't know you. And I sure as hell don't trust you."
Frank's expression darkened.
For a long moment, silence stretched between them.
Then he sighed. "I was hoping you wouldn't fight me on this."
Adele barely had time to react before he moved, faster than her eyes could track.
One second she was standing on her porch.
The next, she was slung over his shoulder, her world flipping upside down.
"What the hell?!" she shrieked, kicking wildly. "Put me down, you crazy bastard!"
Frank didn't even flinch as he strode into the forest with her, his grip unyielding. "You're only making this harder for yourself."
Adele pounded her fists against his back. "I'll scream! I'll-"
"Go ahead," he said lazily. "There's no one out here who can help you."
Damn it.
She was alone.
Most of the houses in Hollowbrook were spread out, separated by dense woods. If she screamed, maybe a passing hiker would hear- or maybe not.
She needed a different plan.
Grinding her teeth, she went limp, pretending to pass out.
Frank stopped. "Really?" His tone was almost amused.
Damn it again.
She growled in frustration, reaching up and yanking his hair hard.
That got a reaction.
Frank hissed, a low, warning growl vibrating through his chest. "You're testing my patience, mate."
"Good," she spat. "Because you're testing mine."
Then, without thinking, she twisted in his hold and sank her teeth into his shoulder.
Frank froze.
Adele expected him to curse, to drop her, something-but instead, a deep, guttural sound rumbled from his throat.
Not pain.
Satisfaction.
Her stomach lurched as realization struck-she had just bitten a Lycan King.
And worse?
He liked it.
"Bad idea, sweetheart," he murmured, his voice dangerously low.
Before she could react, Frank grabbed her waist, flipped her upright, and pinned her against the nearest tree.
His hands caged her in, golden eyes burning into hers. "I was trying to be patient," he rasped. "Trying to ease you into this."
Adele swallowed hard.
"But you just had to make things difficult, didn't you?" His breath was warm against her skin.
"I don't belong to you," she whispered, but it lacked the fire from before.
Frank exhaled sharply. "You keep saying that. But your body tells a different story."
Adele's cheeks flamed. "You're insane."
He smirked. "You're mine."
She opened her mouth to retort-but before she could, a low, menacing snarl cut through the night.
Frank's smirk vanished. His entire body tensed, his muscles coiling like a predator sensing danger.
Adele's pulse spiked. "What was that?"
Frank's golden eyes flickered toward the shadows. "We're not alone."
A second later, a massive black wolf emerged from the trees, its fangs bared. Then another. And another.
Adele's breath caught as more wolves materialized from the darkness, their eyes gleaming with hunger.
Frank cursed. "Rogues."
Her stomach dropped.
She didn't know much about Lycans, but everyone in Hollowbrook had heard the stories. Rogues were wild, lawless werewolves who had lost control, existing on pure instinct and violence.
And they were staring straight at her.
Frank shifted his stance, his body moving in front of hers, shielding her.
One of the wolves growled, saliva dripping from its fangs.
Then, without warning, it lunged.
Frank moved so fast he was a blur. One moment he was in front of her-the next, he had caught the rogue mid-air, his claws slicing through flesh.
Adele stumbled back, eyes wide.
Holy shit.
Frank wasn't just strong-he was deadly.
The other rogues hesitated, but only for a second.
Then they attacked at once.
Adele barely had time to react before chaos erupted around her.
Frank shifted mid-air, his massive Lycan form dwarfing the wolves around him. Claws slashed, jaws snapped, and the air filled with the scent of blood and fur.
Adele's heart pounded as she pressed herself against the tree, her breath coming in short gasps.
She should run. She should run. But her feet wouldn't move.
Instead, her gaze stayed locked on Frank, mesmerized by the way he fought-like a king defending his queen.
Within moments, the rogues were dead, their bodies strewn across the forest floor.
Frank stood among them, his massive form heaving with exertion. Then, he turned to her, golden eyes blazing.
"You're coming with me." His voice was rough, edged with something dark.
Adele hesitated- just for a second. Then, with a deep breath, she nodded. She had no idea what awaited her in Frank's world. But one thing was certain- her life would never be the same again.
Adele's heart pounded as she stared at the bodies of the rogue wolves littering the forest floor. Their dark fur was matted with blood, their snarling mouths now frozen in death. The sounds of the battle still echoed in her mind, the snarls, the crunch of bone, the guttural roars of a predator who had won. And at the center of it all was Frank Robinson.
He stood in his Lycan form, his massive figure towering over the fallen rogues. His fur was as dark as midnight, his golden eyes glowing in the dim moonlight. His broad chest rose and fell with slow, controlled breaths, but there was a restless energy in him- like a predator who wasn't quite finished hunting. Then, in a seamless motion, he shifted back.
The transformation was quick, his body twisting and reshaping until the beast was gone and a man stood in its place. His clothes had been shredded from the shift, leaving only remnants of dark fabric clinging to his muscular frame. The moonlight carved sharp lines across his bare skin, highlighting the powerful ridges of his chest and arms.
Adele swallowed hard, forcing herself to look anywhere but at him.
"You're staring, mate," Frank murmured, his voice dripping with amusement.
Her cheeks burned. "I'm not."
He smirked, stepping closer. "Lying already? Not the best way to start our bond."
Adele snapped her gaze to his, ignoring the way heat licked through her veins. "I didn't agree to any bond."
Frank exhaled, running a hand through his dark hair. "You will."
She glared at him, her body still thrumming with adrenaline. "You just killed those wolves like they were nothing. And you expect me to just go with you?"
Frank's expression darkened. "They weren't wolves, Adele. They were rogues. They would have torn you apart."
She crossed her arms, trying to ignore the small, terrified voice in her head that knew he was right. "And what about you? How do I know you won't do the same?"
Frank's jaw tightened, his golden eyes burning with something unreadable. Something dangerous.
"Because you're mine," he said simply.
Adele's breath hitched.
Before she could respond, a branch snapped in the distance.
Frank's head whipped around, his body tensing.
Adele instinctively pressed herself against the tree. "What was that?" she whispered.
Frank sniffed the air, his golden gaze scanning the shadows. After a long moment, he exhaled and turned back to her.
"It's not a threat," he said. "But we need to leave. Now."
Adele hesitated. "And if I say no?"
Frank sighed. Then, without another word, he reached for her.
She darted away, dodging his grasp. "No! Stop grabbing me like I'm a damn bag of potatoes!"
Frank let out a low growl. "Then stop making things difficult."
"I'm not going anywhere with you!"
His eyes narrowed. "You'd rather stay here? Where the rogues will keep coming? Where you'll be hunted?"
Adele faltered.
Frank pushed closer, his warmth wrapping around her like a tangible force. "I get it, Adele. You're scared. You don't trust me." His voice softened, but it didn't lose its edge. "But you're safer with me than you are here."
Adele clenched her fists. "I don't even know you."
Frank's lips twitched. "Then let's fix that."
Before she could argue, he grabbed her hand.
Adele stiffened, but the moment their skin touched, something ignited in her.
It wasn't just heat-it was electricity.
A bond, raw and unbreakable, snapped into place.
Her breath caught. "What... what is this?"
Frank's eyes darkened with satisfaction. "Our mate bond."
She tried to pull away, but his grip was firm.
"This is fate, Adele," he murmured. "You can fight it. You can deny it. But you can't escape it."
Adele's entire body trembled. "This isn't fair."
Frank's smirk faded. "It never is."
Then, in a swift motion, he lifted her into his arms and carried her into the night.
The Lycan Kingdom
The journey was a blur.
Frank didn't let her go-not once. He moved through the forest with unnatural speed, his strides smooth and controlled. Adele had given up struggling after the first half hour, realizing it was pointless.
Instead, she focused on where he was taking her.
The deeper they traveled, the more the landscape changed. The air felt thicker, charged with something ancient. The trees were taller, their canopies so dense that barely any moonlight broke through. And the scents-wild, earthy, primal-grew stronger.
Then, suddenly, they emerged from the forest.
Adele's breath caught.
In front of her, a city stretched across the valley, its buildings blending seamlessly with the land. Tall stone towers rose above sprawling streets, their windows glowing with warm golden light.
It was nothing like the human world.
It was something older. Something powerful.
"The Lycan Kingdom," Frank murmured against her ear.
Adele shivered.
They passed through a massive stone archway, where guards stood at attention, their eyes glowing in the darkness.
They bowed as Frank approached.
"Alpha," one of them greeted.
Adele's pulse spiked.
Frank didn't acknowledge them. He carried her straight through the city, past winding streets and curious stares, until they reached a castle carved into the side of a mountain.
The doors swung open before them.
Frank strode inside, finally setting Adele down in the grand entryway.
She stumbled back, her breath coming in sharp gasps. "You-you're the king?"
Frank smirked. "I did mention that."
Adele gawked at him. "I thought you were just some... rogue Alpha or something! Not an actual damn king!"
Frank chuckled. "Would that have made it easier?"
She glared. "No! It just makes this whole thing worse!"
Frank studied her, his golden eyes gleaming. "You're overwhelmed."
"No shit."
He exhaled. "I'll give you time to adjust. But know this-you belong here."
Adele shook her head violently. "I belong in Hollowbrook. Not in some supernatural city with a bunch of-"
"Lycans?" Frank finished.
She scowled. "Yeah."
Frank took a step closer, his presence overwhelming. "Then tell me something, Adele." His voice was soft but commanding. "If you're so human... why do you feel it?"
Adele's throat tightened.
"Feel what?" she whispered.
Frank reached out, his fingers brushing her wrist-right over her racing pulse.
"This," he murmured. "The bond. The pull. The fire in your veins that screams you're not like them."
Adele's breath shook.
She did feel it.
She had always felt it.
Frank leaned in, his lips inches from hers. "You're one of us, Adele. And you always have been."
She wanted to deny it.
She wanted to run.
But deep down, in the deepest part of her soul, she knew... He was right. And she didn't know whether to be terrified... or thrilled.
The air in the grand hall of the Lycan palace was thick with tension. Adele's heart pounded as she stared at Frank, his golden eyes unwavering as they studied her. The weight of his last words still clung to her, suffocating in its truth.
You're one of us, Adele. And you always have been.
It was impossible. She had been raised as a human-normal, ordinary. But deep inside, something had always felt... off. A restlessness, a sense of not belonging. She had never spoken of it, never dared to voice the strange pull in her chest that whispered she was meant for something more.
Now, staring at Frank, feeling the raw electricity between them, she feared she had found the answer.
Adele took a shaky step backward. "You're wrong."
Frank arched a brow. "Am I?"
"I'm human," she insisted, her voice sharp despite the tremor beneath it. "I don't have fangs, or claws, or-"
"Power?" Frank interrupted. He took a step closer, his voice dropping to a low murmur. "Then explain why your heart is beating like you're about to shift."
Adele froze.
Her pulse was racing. Not just from fear, but from something else- something primal and foreign.
Frank tilted his head slightly, as if listening. Then, he smirked. "You feel it, don't you?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," she lied.
Frank sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "You can deny it all you want, but it won't change the truth."
Adele clenched her fists. "And what truth is that?"
"That you were never meant to be just human," Frank said. "And whether you like it or not, you're mine."
Adele's stomach clenched.
Mine.
The word sent a shiver through her, but she shoved the feeling aside. "I don't belong here," she whispered. "I have a life back home."
Frank's smirk faded. "A life where you were running for your life? Where rogues were hunting you?"
She hesitated.
"You think this was a coincidence?" he continued, his voice dark and smooth like silk. "You think the rogues just happened to find you?"
Adele swallowed. "What are you saying?"
Frank's golden eyes burned. "I'm saying someone sent them."
A chill crept down her spine. "That doesn't make sense. Why would anyone -"
"Because of who you are."
Adele's breath hitched.
Frank exhaled, his expression softening just slightly. "I'll explain everything. But first, you need to rest."
Adele narrowed her eyes. "You expect me to sleep here? In a palace full of Lycans?"
He shrugged. "Would you rather go back outside and take your chances with the rogues?"
She hated that he had a point.
Frank gestured toward a grand staircase. "Come on. I'll take you to your room."
Adele hesitated before following him. The hallways of the palace were vast, lined with stone archways and intricate carvings that looked centuries old. The deeper they walked, the quieter it became, until only the faint crackling of torches filled the silence.
Finally, Frank stopped before a massive wooden door. He pushed it open, revealing a bedroom that was far too luxurious for someone like her.
The room was massive, with a canopy bed draped in dark silks, a stone fireplace casting flickering light against the walls, and large windows overlooking the forest beyond. The scent of pine and something earthy lingered in the air.
Adele stepped inside cautiously. "This is... mine?"
Frank nodded. "For now."
She turned to face him. "And you? Where will you be?"
Frank's lips curled slightly. "Are you worried about me leaving?"
Adele scowled. "No."
He chuckled. "I'll be close. If you need me, just call."
"I won't."
Frank smirked, his golden eyes gleaming. "We'll see."
Then, before she could argue, he turned and walked out, closing the door behind him.
Adele exhaled shakily, her hands gripping the bedpost as the weight of everything settled onto her.
She was alone. In a Lycan king's palace.
And worst of all?
She wasn't sure she wanted to leave.
A Shadow in the Night
Adele woke with a start.
Her heart was pounding, her breath sharp and uneven. The room was silent, but something felt... wrong.
A presence.
Adele sat up, straining her ears. Then-
A creak.
Her pulse spiked.
Slowly, she turned her head toward the window. The curtains billowed softly, the glass panes reflecting nothing but darkness.
But the moment she focused -
A figure moved.
Adele jerked back, her breath catching in her throat.
Someone was there. Watching her.
Then, before she could scream, a deep voice whispered-
"You don't belong here."
Adele's blood ran cold.
And then-
The figure vanished.
Adele scrambled out of bed, her hands shaking. She rushed to the door, wrenching it open-And nearly crashed into Frank.
His golden eyes were glowing in the dim light. "What's wrong?"
Adele swallowed hard. "There was... someone. In my room."
Frank's expression darkened instantly. "Where?"
She gestured to the window. "They were just-"
But when she looked, the window was closed.
Nothing but shadows.
Adele's stomach twisted. "I swear, I-"
Frank stepped into the room, his presence commanding. He inhaled deeply, his jaw tightening.
"There was someone here," he confirmed.
Adele's breath stilled. "You can smell them?"
Frank nodded, his golden eyes burning. "And they shouldn't be."
His entire body tensed, his hands curling into fists. "Stay here."
Adele grabbed his wrist before she could think. "Wait-where are you going?"
Frank's gaze locked onto hers. "To find out who's after you."
Adele's heart slammed against her ribs. "Frank-"
He cupped her cheek suddenly, his touch unexpectedly gentle. "I won't let anything happen to you," he murmured.
Before she could respond, Frank turned and disappeared into the hall, his golden eyes glowing as he vanished into the night. Adele stood there, trembling. Someone had been watching her. And for the first time since she arrived, she realized- This wasn't just about a mate bond. It was about something bigger. And she was at the center of it.
The silence in the room was deafening after Frank left. Adele could still feel the warmth of his fingers on her cheek, his promise lingering in the air. I won't let anything happen to you.
She swallowed hard, her pulse still racing from the encounter. Someone had been watching her. Lurking in the shadows. And Frank had confirmed it - there had been a scent, a presence.
But who? And why ?
Adele's hands clenched into fists as she tried to steady herself. She couldn't just sit here and wait. She had spent her entire life running from things she didn't understand. It was time to start getting answers.
She turned to the window again, hesitating only for a second before pushing it open. The night air was cool against her skin as she scanned the forest beyond. Nothing. But she couldn't shake the feeling that someone- or something-was still out there.
Before she could talk herself out of it, she grabbed the thick shawl resting on a nearby chair and threw it over her shoulders. Carefully, she slipped out of the room, the heavy door creaking slightly as she eased it open.
The halls were dimly lit by torches, their flames flickering against the stone walls. The palace was eerily silent, as if the entire place was holding its breath.
She needed to find Frank.
Or at least figure out what the hell was going on.
The Hunt Begins
Adele moved quickly but cautiously through the hallways, her footsteps muffled by the thick rugs lining the floor. Every few moments, she paused to listen - half expecting to hear heavy footsteps or hushed whispers.
But there was nothing.
The deeper she walked into the palace, the stronger the feeling in her chest grew. A tugging sensation, pulling her forward.
It was the same feeling she had felt earlier-when she first locked eyes with Frank.
It wasn't fear. It was something else.
Something primal.
She rounded a corner, only to freeze when she heard a voice ahead.
"-She shouldn't be here, Frank."
Adele pressed herself against the wall, her breath hitching.
"I know," Frank's voice replied, low and firm. "But she is."
A pause.
"And you think it's a coincidence?" the other voice challenged. "That the rogues found her right before she stumbled onto our lands?"
Adele's heart pounded.
Rogues.
They had been after her. Hunting her.
But why?
"She doesn't even know who she is," Frank said. "She's not a threat."
A bitter laugh. "Not yet."
Adele risked a glance around the corner. Two men stood in the dim torchlight. One was Frank, his dark hair tousled, his golden eyes sharp. The other man was taller, broader-his features severe, with dark hair cropped close and a scar running along his jawline.
"She's my mate," Frank said, his tone daring the other man to argue.
The scarred man exhaled through his nose. "You don't know that."
Frank growled. "I do."
Adele's stomach flipped.
Mate.
The word sent a shiver through her.
The scarred man ran a hand over his face. "Look, Frank, I don't doubt your instincts. But that doesn't change the fact that someone sent those rogues after her."
Frank's jaw tightened. "And I'm going to find out who."
The scarred man sighed. "Just be careful. If what I suspect is true, this is just the beginning."
Adele's breath hitched.
The beginning of what?
A Dangerous Revelation
Before she could process any of it, Frank suddenly turned his head sharply-and his golden eyes locked directly onto her hiding spot.
Adele's blood turned to ice.
"Come out, Adele," he called, his voice cool but firm.
Her throat went dry. Shit.
Slowly, she stepped out from behind the corner, keeping her chin lifted despite the way her pulse thundered in her ears.
Frank's expression was unreadable as he watched her approach. The scarred man beside him exhaled sharply.
"Great," he muttered. "So much for discretion."
Frank ignored him. "How much did you hear?"
Adele crossed her arms. "Enough. "
Frank's jaw clenched. "You shouldn't be out of your room."
Adele bristled. " And what? Just sit there like a good little prisoner while you talk about me behind my back?"
Frank sighed, rubbing his temples. "It's not like that."
"Oh?" She arched a brow. "Because it sure sounds like you know something about me that I don't."
Frank exchanged a glance with the scarred man, who merely raised his brows.
Adele stepped closer, her voice quieter now. "You think someone sent the rogues after me?"
Frank hesitated. "Yes."
Adele swallowed. "Why?"
For a long moment, Frank just looked at her, his golden eyes searching hers.
Then he said it.
"Because you're not human, Adele."
The world seemed to tilt beneath her feet.
Her breath stuttered. "That's not-"
"I can smell it," Frank interrupted, his gaze fierce. "Your blood. Your scent. You're Lycan, Adele."
She shook her head. "No. No, I'm not."
Frank took a step toward her, his presence overwhelming. "You are. And someone out there knows it."
Adele's knees felt weak.
Her entire life- every moment, every memory-had been built on the belief that she was human.
But deep inside... she had always known something was wrong.
That she wasn't normal.
Adele's hands trembled as she whispered, "Then why don't I feel it? Why can't I shift?"
Frank exhaled. "Because someone has been hiding your nature."
Adele's breath caught.
"Hiding it?"
Frank nodded. "Through magic. Through blood rituals. I don't know how yet, but I will find out."
The scarred man folded his arms. "And if we don't? Then we're dealing with something much worse."
Adele swallowed hard. "Worse?"
Frank's golden eyes burned. "A war, Adele."
The words settled like ice in her veins.
A war.
Because of her.
Adele's entire world had just shattered, but deep inside, beneath the fear and confusion, something stirred. Something ancient. Something hungry. And for the first time in her life- She wasn't sure she wanted to fight it.
The silence that followed Frank's declaration felt like a physical weight pressing down on Adele's chest.
She was Lycan.
Not human. Not normal.
Everything she had believed about herself, about her life, had just been ripped away.
Her breathing turned shallow.
"No," she murmured, shaking her head. "That's not possible."
Frank's golden eyes never wavered. "It is."
The scarred man beside him-who Adele assumed must be one of Frank's most trusted men- folded his arms. "She doesn't even know what she is."
Frank exhaled, running a hand through his dark hair. "I know."
Adele clenched her fists. "Then explain it to me."
Frank hesitated.
And that hesitation made something inside her snap.
She stepped forward, her voice rising. "No more half-truths. No more secrets. I want to know everything. Now."
Frank met her gaze, something unreadable flickering in his expression.
Then he nodded.
"Alright," he said. "I'll tell you everything I know."
The Hidden Bloodline
Frank led her into a dimly lit room down the hall. It wasn't as grand as the other chambers she had seen-more of a war room than anything else. Maps and documents were scattered across a large wooden table, and the scent of ink and old parchment filled the air.
The scarred man followed them, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.
Frank motioned for Adele to sit, but she remained standing, her arms tightly folded.
"I don't know exactly who you are, Adele," Frank started, his voice measured. "But I do know you're not just any Lycan."
Adele frowned. "What do you mean?"
Frank leaned forward, his golden eyes sharp. "Your scent. It's... different. Powerful. More than a normal Lycan's."
Adele's pulse quickened.
"What does that mean?" she asked, a small edge of fear creeping into her voice.
Frank hesitated. "It means that whoever has been hiding you-hiding your true nature-went to great lengths to do it. It wasn't just about keeping you human. It was about keeping you specifically hidden."
Adele swallowed.
"Hidden from who?"
Frank exchanged a look with the scarred man.
Then he said, "The Duskbane Pack."
Adele's body locked up.
"That's your last name," she whispered. "Frank... Duskbane."
Frank nodded slowly.
"My pack is one of the most powerful Lycan clans in existence," he said. "And our enemies... they would do anything to destroy us."
Adele's heart pounded. "You think I'm connected to them?"
Frank studied her carefully. "I think you might be one of us."
The words sent a chill down her spine.
No. That didn't make sense.
Her parents had been human. She had no memories of being anything but ordinary.
And yet-
The way her body had responded to Frank. The strange pull in her chest. The way she had always felt different, even as a child.
What if... what if she had been lied to her entire life?
A Dangerous Past
Adele shook her head. "That's impossible. My parents-"
"Were they really your parents?" the scarred man asked suddenly, his voice low.
Adele froze.
She opened her mouth to respond-but no words came out.
Because the truth was... she didn't know.
She had no memories of her parents before the age of five. No baby pictures. No stories of her birth. It was as if she had appeared in their lives one day.
She had always thought it was just... normal.
Now, a horrible realization settled into her bones.
It wasn't.
Frank watched her closely. "You feel it, don't you?"
Adele swallowed hard.
She did.
Something inside her was waking up. Something that had been locked away.
And she was terrified of what it might be.
A War Brewing
Before she could respond, a knock at the door shattered the tense silence.
A young man rushed in, his breathing ragged.
"Alpha," he said, addressing Frank. "We found another body."
Adele's blood ran cold.
Frank stood instantly. "Where?"
"Just beyond the northern border." The young man hesitated, his gaze flickering to Adele. "It was a rogue."
Frank swore under his breath.
Adele's hands clenched at her sides. "Another rogue? You think it's connected to me?"
Frank's jaw tightened. "I don't believe in coincidences."
The scarred man- who Adele was starting to suspect was Frank's Beta- pushed off the wall. "We need to see it for ourselves."
Frank nodded and turned to Adele.
"You're coming with us."
Adele blinked. "What? Why?"
Frank's golden eyes burned.
"Because if someone is hunting you," he said, "then it's time you see exactly what we're up against."
The Northern Border
The night air was crisp as they rode through the dense forest, the scent of damp earth and pine thick in the air.
Frank led the way, his wolf just beneath the surface, his body tense and ready.
Adele sat behind him, gripping his waist. She could feel the raw strength in his body, the heat radiating from him.
She should have been afraid.
But instead, she felt... safe.
Which made no sense at all.
They reached the northern border in under an hour.
The moment they arrived, Adele knew something was wrong.
The scent of blood was heavy in the air.
She slid off the horse, her legs slightly unsteady as she took in the sight before her.
A body lay sprawled in the dirt-a man, his throat torn open. His eyes were wide, frozen in horror.
But that wasn't what made Adele's blood run cold.
It was the mark carved into the rogue's chest.
A symbol she had seen before.
In her nightmares.
Frank crouched beside the body, his face grim. "This was a message."
The scarred man beside him cursed. "They know she's here."
Adele barely heard them.
Because as she stared at the symbol carved into the rogue's chest, something deep inside her snapped.
Pain seared through her skull, white-hot and blinding.
Images flashed before her eyes.
A dark forest. A woman's scream. Blood on her hands.
And a voice-low and powerful, whispering her name.
Adele...
Her knees buckled, and she barely registered Frank catching her before she hit the ground.
Somewhere in the distance, she heard him calling her name.
But all she could hear was the voice inside her head.
Remember.
Then everything went black.
End of Chapter Three.
