Alina's POV
I was running through the dark forest, trying to save my life.
I could see another territory in the distance. I tried hard to get there, so I sped up my running. But before I could get there, some wolves stopped me.
I could smell them; they were rogues.
"Why are all the dangers coming together before me? There is no one to save me now, no way I can save my life."
Those rogue wolves began to growl at me, and I was terrified. There is no one in the world to call my own.
Who would save me?
The rogues could smell me; that was why they came after me. I was an unmated Omega. Every male wolf could get attracted to Omegas or want to have them.
I was trembling in fear.
Suddenly, those rogues stopped growling and took a step back, looking behind me. I had a feeling that someone was behind me.
Then I smelled the scent from which I was running away from here to escape. I was trying to escape from the owner of the scent.
The man came from behind me and went to the rogues. His back was facing me, so I could not see his face. But even watching him from his back, anybody could tell that he had a dark aura.
He turned his head slowly to his side and said in his deep voice,
"You tried so hard to run away? But you know very well that you can't escape from me. Nobody can save you from your death. You have to die. I want to see you die brutally."
When I heard him, my hands were shaking, my legs began to wobble, my breathing became labored, and all I could feel was fear.
As soon as the rogues heard those words, they began to growl at me. They knew who was in front of them, and they did not try to flee because they could not actually escape; instead, they tried to attack me in the hopes that the man would sympathize with them and then forgive them and let them go.
The man narrowed his eyes at the rogues when he saw what they were trying to do.
"I don't have time to play with you all," he said angrily to the rogues and immediately shifted.
I saw him shift and got afraid. His wolf was huge. His blackish gray fur was not looking dirty but pure.
Those rogues looked so small in front of him.
In a blink of an eye, he killed all the rogues. He killed them by biting their necks and ripping them away from their bodies.
I was startled. But when the wolf turned around and looked at me with his red eyes, I fell to the ground in fear.
The wolf was slowly approaching me, blood dripping from his teeth.
Fearful, I pressed the palms of my hands against my face and squeezed my eyes shut as tightly as I could.
The wolf tightened his jaw and jumped on me.
"AAAA!!!!"
I screamed with all my might.
"Alina, what happened to you?"
When a voice called out to me and patted my shoulder, I frowned.
I opened my eyes and looked around me.
I was in my bedroom!
Wasn't I in the forest?
I sat up, patted my cheeks, and then sighed. My heart was racing, and my entire body was sweating.
For the past few weeks, I have had the same dream every day. It was a nightmare. But it felt very real to me.
"Alina? Again the same dream?"
I looked beside me and noticed Crystal, my best friend, sitting on the edge of the bed.
I nodded at her.
"Don't worry. It's just a nightmare." Crystal said, patting my back.
"Do you want to drink some water?" Crystal asked.
"Hmm."
Crystal poured and handed me a glass of water.
I drank the entire glass of water in one gulp. I was still restless, though.
I glanced at my best friend. "When did you come here?"
"While you were watching nightmares."
Her words made me chuckle.
I lived in the dormitory. My best friend had a room directly across from mine. We had keys to each other's rooms.
Crystal and I have been friends for ten years. We first met at our elementary school when we were ten. We ended up becoming friends. We both moved abroad for higher education.
"Alina, you have not gone to the pack house in five years. But you promised me last week that you would go with me tomorrow in our pack. Did you forget about it?" Crystal asked.
"Why do I want to go back to the pack? My mom and dad don't love me. In the past five years, they never tried to get in touch with me. I bet they will not be happy if I go there," I replied with an upset tone.
"But you promised me last week. And you are a woman of one word. Aren't you? " Crystal tried to convince me.
"Okay, I will. But only for you. Because I don't break promises."
"That's my girl. Come here, let me hug you."
"No. Don't hug me. I am all sweaty," I said, getting out of the bed.
"I always think about your dreams, Alina. Doesn't the man always come to save you in your dreams?"
I took my clothes from the closet, shaking my head. "No, he always comes to save me, but he says he is the one who wants to kill me. He claims he has the right to kill me."
"How strange! I thought he was your knight in shining armor."
"I never felt safe in my dreams when he came to save me. It was as if I already knew he was going to kill me. In fact, I was running away from him." I explained the dream to Crystal.
"Don't worry. Maybe you are too stressed, which is why you keep dreaming about these. The man is just your imagination; otherwise, why would anyone try to kill you?" Crystal said, and I nodded my head.
Just as I was ready to head to the bathroom to shower, Crystal asked,
"But how does the man in your dreams look?" Crystal asked with excitement.
I stopped at the door and replied,
"He radiated a dark aura. And I always saw his side face. He was a very handsome man."
"You mean a handsome imaginary enemy who wants to kill you every night in your nightmare?"
I chuckled. "Yeah."
Then I went to take a shower.
After showering and changing into comfortable clothes, I exited the bathroom. I noticed Crystal was not in my room anymore.
After wiping my hair, I dried it. I put my hair up in a high ponytail and took a look at myself. Even though I was twenty years old, everyone who saw me thought I was a girl of sixteen or eighteen. They said I looked very young for my age.
I got out of my room and knocked on Crystal's door. Crystal quickly opened the door and looked at me. "Let's go."
I nodded to her and said, "Yeah, we are running late because of my annoying nightmare."
"No, it's not like that. Don't worry. If we run, we can get to class quickly. Though I am not a werewolf like you, and I can't compare to your strength, still, I can try." Crystal said.
I looked into Crystal's green eyes.
Crystal was not a werewolf like me. She was a witch, a daughter of a very powerful witch. Her mother was a royal witch in our pack. So very soon, Crystal will be the royal witch, just like her mother.
Crystal lost her mother five years ago. She loved her mom a lot. But her mom passed away very early. She could not even say goodbye to her.
"So what if you are not a werewolf? We werewolves have physical strength, while witches have the most powerful thing, which is their mental power. You can do anything with your abilities," I said.
We were walking and chatting in the hallway. But we saw some girls fangirling over someone.
"This man is getting attention every day." Crystal said, her gaze drawn to the crowd.
"Yeah, he is the national crush here," I responded with a laugh.
"Alina, I have heard he is a true blood Alpha. You are a werewolf too. Do you want me to set you two up?" Crystal said this while wiggling her brows.
"Oh please, no thanks," I replied and glanced at the crowd. I saw the man whom my best friend had just described as a true blood Alpha.
He was none other than Rick Miller. He was a popular figure at their university. People said he did not want to be the head Alpha of his pack, so he came here and began studying alongside other creatures. Here, everyone was free to date anyone. No boundaries or rules to have the same rank or same status.
Crystal patted my shoulder and asked, "What happened? Do you fall in love at first sight?"
I laughed in response to her question. "No, I am not like you. You are the one who can fall in love at first sight. But you have never told me who he is. You even go to the pack once every three months to see your prince charming. Isn't it?"
I remembered the day four years ago when Crystal returned from her vacation and told me about the man she fell in love with. That time, I did not believe her. However, Crystal continued to visit the pack house every three months to see him. It was as though she was obsessed with him.
"Shh. Don't talk about him here openly. And he is not any Prince Charming," Crystal whispered to me.
"Really? Then who is he?" I asked jokingly. I assumed Crystal would ignore my question again. But this time Crystal answered me in a lower tone, but I heard her clearly.
"He is the Lycan King."
As soon as I heard her, I made a disgusting expression. "What are you talking about? You fell for that arrogant old man?"
Crystal palmed her face. "No, I fell in love with his one and only son."
I frowned. "He has a son! Wait a minute! When did he hand over his realm to his son?"
"Alina, you always told me not to talk about our pack-related things. So I didn't tell you about the coronation of the new Lycan King. The former king gave his crown to his son four years ago."
"You mean when you went back to our pack four years ago, you fell for the king???" My eyes widened.
"Yes, honey. I went to meet his father. You know how much the former king adores me."
I nodded to her. "Yes, I know. After your mother, he is now your parent. He was a close friend of your mother, so he took on all of your responsibilities after her death."
"I just hope he will accept our relationship."
"Your relationship with the Lycan king? He loves you too?" I asked curiously.
"No. I have not told him, but I believe he likes me as well. He does not talk to any other girls besides me," Crystal said while blushing.
"Don't worry, Crystal. If he does not agree with you, just use your spells to transform him into a bunny." I said while laughing.
Crystal shook her head. "I can't. He is the Lycan king. People say he is more powerful than his father. My spells won't work on him."
"Why so serious? I was just kidding with you," I said.
Then we both went to our classes.
After all of our classes, we went shopping. We bought so many dresses because our vacation was starting tomorrow.
"I am very excited for tomorrow. We will go to the pack house," Crystal said.
"What is so good in the pack house?" I asked.
"Our pack is now developed. If you go there, you will not recognize our pack. Even our village sides have advanced. There are many academies and workplaces. People are earning and living on their own."
"That's nice. I hope our journey goes well."
That night, I slept soundly and had no nightmares. When I woke up the next morning, I was surprised to find that I had slept well and awoke without screaming.
I took a shower and got ready for today.
I wore a plain lemon-colored knee-length dress. I had already packed clothes in my luggage yesterday, so there was nothing else I needed to do.
I left my room and knocked on Crystal's door. Crystal opened her door. She was also ready. She took her luggage and exited her room.
This would be a one-month vacation. We needed a lot of clothes.
We arrived at the airport and waited for our flight. We were living with humans, and no one knew our true identities. So we behaved like normal people here. But other creatures knew about us. They could identify who was who.
I stood up and went to get some drinks. I placed an order and received two strawberry milkshakes.
When our flight was announced, I hurriedly tried to walk back to Crystal.
But unexpectedly, I bumped into a man, causing the milkshake to spill onto his shirt.
I looked up and saw Rick Miller.
"Are you serious? What have you just done? You spilled your drink on me??" he said angrily.
"Listen, I am sorry; I am in a hurry," I said and tried to pass him, but he stepped in front of me. "Do you think that your simple sorry will be enough?"
I got annoyed. "Now what? Do you want me to wipe your shirt with my scarf or some tissue? Do you watch too many dramas and movies? It's real life, not a fantasy. So please excuse me," I said, running to Crystal, leaving Rick perplexed by what I had just said.
A man rushed up to Rick, and I heard him say,
"Let's go, Rick. Otherwise, we will miss our flight."
He nodded and looked at me for the last time, then left.
Meanwhile,
I was in a hurry. "Relax, Alina. We have time. It is not our plane that was boarding." Crystal said.
I exhaled. "I thought we were going to miss the flight."
We boarded our flight and headed to the city where the Lycan king reigned.
-
Crystal and I arrived in our pack in the afternoon.
When I saw the pack's beauty, I was amazed. Crystal was right. Our pack was very different now.
We were in the car, taking in the sights, when I said, "Crystal."
"Hmm?" Crystal, who was sitting beside me in the car, turned to face me.
"Drop me off at my house." I said.
Crystal nodded and told the driver the address of my home.
When we arrived, I got out of the car and looked at my house's front door. The door was locked.
I was confused.
Crystal examined my confused face and looked at where I was looking. Crystal noticed my house was locked from the outside. She immediately got down from the car and came over.
"Where are they?" She asked.
"How would I know?" I said sadly. I did not tell my parents that I was returning to the pack. I knew that if I told them about my coming, my parents would not be happy with it.
But where were they? Where could they possibly go?
"Let's go to the pack house with me then," Crystal offered me.
"They have a good relationship with you, not me. "
"That doesn't matter. That is our pack house; if any pack member needs help, they would help without any objection."
I nodded and went to sit back in the car.
We then proceeded to the Lycan Manor. People refer to it as a pack house because Lycan, Alpha, Theta, Beta, Delta, Gamma, Omega, and witches all lived in it and solved all of their problems there.
The king not only ruled the werewolf realm but also controlled all the creatures in his kingdom.
When we arrived, I went to the main gate of the Lycan manor and looked up at the whole manor from outside.
It was evening, so everything appeared dark, but the manor resembled an old palace built centuries ago.
I came here after ten years. When I was ten years old, I came here with her father; I could not remember why, but I did remember meeting the arrogant Lycan king. He did not look well when I last saw him. So I was just hoping that everything would be okay with me.
"Let's go, Alina," Crystal said.
I agreed with a nod. I noticed some men guarding the mansion, standing there like mannequins.
They entered the mansion. I looked around and saw the mansion was still the same. It was decorated in the style of a royal palace.
When a maid saw us enter, she immediately approached us. "Welcome back, Miss Graham. Please sit down; I will call everyone," the maid said to Crystal.
Crystal nodded and motioned for me to sit down on the couch.
We sat down and waited for everyone.
After a few minutes, a middle-aged couple came downstairs. Crystal got up from the couch, approached them, and hugged the man.
"Uncle Atlas."
It was the former king, Atlas Robertson. He was Crystal's mother's closest friend. When her mother, Chole Graham, died, Atlas told everyone that he would take care of Crystal as his own daughter.
"When did you come, my child?" Atlas asked.
"Just now, Uncle," Crystal said and moved back. Then she asked, "How are you, Uncle? Is your health okay?"
"I am fine, dear," Atlas replied and patted her head.
Crystal cast a glance beside him. "How are you, Aunt Daisy?"
Daisy nodded at her. "I am fine."
Daisy Robertson was the former queen of this realm.
I had a feeling she was not very fond of Crystal. Perhaps it was because Daisy and Crystal's mother did not get along well.
Daisy looked behind Crystal and her gaze fell on me. "Who is she?" She questioned Crystal.
Crystal turned to look at me and replied to Daisy, "She is my best friend, Alina Brown."
Atlas frowned. "Brown? What is her father's name?"
"Hayden Brown," I replied.
I was quiet all the time and didn't disturb them. But when the former king asked a question about me, I could not help but answer.
"I see," Daisy mumbled when I said my father's name.
Atlas did not seem pleased with the answer. Daisy, on the other hand, approached me and examined me closely.
"You are beautiful," she said.
My eyes widened. I was not expecting such a sudden compliment from the former queen.
"Thank you, Quee-"
"Daisy. You can address me as Aunt Daisy. I am no longer the Queen."
I nodded with a smile. "Thank you, Aunt Daisy."
At that time, the Theta of the pack, Cooper entered the manor.
"Where is your king? He has not returned for five days now. Is he even alright? What about the war? Did he kill everyone and win the war?" Atlas asked.
I looked at Atlas; he was speaking as if it were a simple matter. I thought about him and remembered that this man was arrogant from the start.
Theta Cooper looked at Atlas and replied.
"The king will arrive around midnight. He is on his way here."
When I heard about the king, I felt something strange inside me. I assumed that I was afraid of him.
Atlas appeared calm when he learned his son was on his way. His son won another war. He never expressed his concerns to others, but he cared about his son. His son was extremely powerful, and that was what he valued. His son's invisible foes were everywhere.
"Crystal, go to your room to freshen up. Come for dinner after that." Atlas told Crystal before leaving the living room.
I was looking at the empty space where Atlas had stood a few minutes ago. I had no idea why this man disliked me so much. When I came here with my father ten years ago, he behaved exactly the same way. He ignored me as if I were unworthy of a conversation.
Daisy gave me a smile. "He is not used to new people. You are here because of your parents, right?"
I nodded at her. "Yes, do you know where they are?"
"They went to another pack."
I was shocked. "But why?"
I assumed my parents had left our pack without saying anything to me.
"Perhaps they have some important work. I am not sure if you can meet them before going back, but you can call them and ask them to return."
I was confused. Why would her parents go to some other pack? She didn't want to call them. What if they scold her for coming here without informing them?
Daisy called a maid and said, "Take her to a guest room. She is our guest."
The maid nodded and bowed to Daisy. She motioned for me to follow the maid.
I looked at Crystal. Crystal acknowledged me with a nod. "Let's go."
I went to one of the guest rooms. It was so big from my room in the dorm. I looked around and saw that there was a window. I approached the window. I could see the forest through the window. I was pleased with my new room.
However, I was upset with my parents. My parents never called me once in these five years. I never asked them for money; instead, I worked part-time in restaurants during the day and night to pay for my tuition. But still, my parents never tried to contact me.
I took a shower and dressed in a simple white full-sleeve knee-length dress. I combed my hair after wiping it clean. I then took all of my clothes out of my luggage and placed them in the room's large closet.
"Wow, the closet is really large. I myself can even fit in here," I said to myself and laughed.
I heard a knock on the door.
"Come in."
A maid came and said, "Please come downstairs for dinner. Everyone is waiting for you."
I nodded and immediately walked out of my room.
I went into the dining room and saw everyone eating.
"Alina, come and sit." Crystal exclaimed happily.
I went to sit next to her.
There were so many different dishes on the table that I was amazed.
I started eating. Atlas looked at me and asked, "Did you call your parents?"
I looked at him and replied, "No, I didn't, but I will call them soon. When they come back, I will leave the pack house."
Daisy shook her head. "No, it's okay. You can stay here for as long as you want. You are our guest, so you don't have to worry."
"Thank you, Aunt Daisy," I said, smiling at her.
"Alina, eat; your food is getting cold," Crystal said. I could not continue the conversation.
After dinner, everyone went back to their rooms.
I was sitting on the bed and playing games on my phone. I was surprised to discover that our pack now has networks. It was not like it was an old town or something. But I just thought I could not get networks here because every time Crystal came here, she never called me even once. When I asked Crystal, she always said she could not call me because the pack house had no networks.
"Did you lie to me, Crystal? But why would you? No, maybe the networks came recently. Maybe that was why Mom and Dad could not call me," I told herself.
When I thought about my parents, I felt a spark of hope in my heart.
They never paid attention to me when I lived with them. They even sent me outside the pack without my consent. I cried that time a lot. I didn't want to go anywhere. I wanted to stay with my parents. My parents scolded me and said that I was not a child anymore and I needed to go outside; it was mandatory. So I agreed and went outside the pack to study.
I was thirsty, so I looked around for water but could not find any. So I opened the door slowly and stepped out of my room.
The floor was completely dark. I realized everyone was sleeping.
I moved slowly from my room's corner and headed toward the kitchen. But there was no maid, and I was not sure where the kitchen was in this palace-like mansion.
I made it to the living room. The moonlight fell on me. The moonlight shone through the window blinds.
I did not know how, but I got to the other side of the mansion. I looked around and noticed moonlight on the floor coming through the window.
Tonight the moon was shining so brightly.
Suddenly, a strange smell hit my nostrils.
I took a pause and halted my steps. I could feel the smell coming so fast toward me. I frowned at myself.
Why did I stop?
I sniffed the scent in the air and closed my eyes; it was so alluring that I nearly lost my mind.
Before I could open my eyes, I sensed the smell from behind me.
Then I heard the deepest voice I had ever heard, causing my legs to tremble and shivers to run down my body.
"WHO ARE YOU?"
