Chapter 1 The Painful Truth

AKIRA's POV.

I opened my eyes to find myself in the dark, dungeon. The offensive stench of waste and decay filled my nostrils. I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain went through my head, making me wince and close my eyes:

"Akira, you're a disgrace!" Kaida's voice echoed in my head, followed by the sound of the dungeon door slamming shut.

I slowly got up, my body aching from the emotional adulation I suffered before I was thrown here. I stumbled towards the door, pounding the door with my fist.

"Kaida, please! Let me out! I'll try again, I promise!"

The only response was silence. No one was there to listen to me.

I slumped against the door, tears rushing down my face. Why was Kaida doing this to me? I had always been a loyal member of the pack, dedicated to healing and helping others. Everyone in the pack had always come to me, why this harsh treatment.

The sound of footsteps outside my cell made me look up. The door was flung open, and a figure entered.

"Akira, you're wanted in the infirmary," one of the pack's guards said, his eyes filled with hate as he glared at me.

I stumbled out of the cell, my legs shaking. What did they want me to do now? Try to heal Lyra again, only to fail and face more punishment.

As I entered the infirmary, I saw Lyra's frail form on the bed, her eyes deep in their sockets and her skin pale. Kaida stood beside her, a frown on her face.

"Akira, you're supposed to be our pack's healer," Kaida sneered. "But you can't even save one of our own. What good are you? Useless omega."

I felt a surge of anger and frustration, but I bit back my rage. I knew it wouldn't do any good to argue with Kaida in her current mood.

"I'll try again," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I won't give up on Lyra."

Kaida scoffed. "You'd better not. If she dies, so do you."

I felt a chill run down my spine at her words, but I refused to back down. I approached Lyra's bedside, taking her hand in mine. I closed my eyes, focusing on my healing energy. But as I reached out to Lyra, I felt a strange resistance from her side. It was as if her body was rejecting my attempts to heal her.

I opened my eyes to find Kaida glaring at me. "What's wrong, Akira? Can't even manage a simple healing?"

I gritted my teeth, trying to think of a solution. But before I could try again, Lyra's body began to convulse. Her eyes rolled back in her head, and saliva began to come out of her mouth.

"Lyra, no!" I cried, holding her down as she thrashed around on the bed.

Kaida walked over, her face contorted with rage. "You're making her worse, Akira! Get out! Get out of my sight!"

The guards dragged me away, throwing me back into the dungeon. I landed hard on the floor, I was left all alone again.

As I lay there, I realized that Kaida was right. I was a failure as a healer. And if I didn't find a way to save Lyra, I would pay the ultimate price. The previous alpha had tried her best to make sure I learned the ways of healing, something that would help me add value to the pack. But Lyra's cause was difficult.

But I refused to give up. I thought back to all my training, and all my knowledge of healing. There had to be a way to save Lyra. And I was determined to find it.

With determination, I began to think, to reason, to search for a solution. And as I did, a bit of hope began to come to life within me.

Maybe, just maybe, I could still save Lyra. And myself.

As I lay on the cold floor, I began to think back to my training. I remembered a lesson from my mentor, a wise old healer named Elara. She had taught me about the importance of balance in healing, and how the body and the mind need to be one for the healing to be a success.

I realized that I had been so focused on Lyra's physical wounds that I had neglected her spiritual and emotional health. I remembered a technique Elara had taught me, a way of using my energy to balance the patient's.

I closed my eyes and tried to use an ancient way of healing. l tried very hard to concentrate and eventually, I was able to get into her mind.

But just as I thought I had succeeded, a loud growl echoed through the dungeon. The sound sent chills down my spine. I opened my eyes to see Kaida standing in the doorway, her eyes blazing with rage.

"Akira, you're a monster!" she snarled. "You're using dark magic to heal Lyra!"

I protested, but Kaida wouldn't listen. She summoned the guards, and they dragged me away, deeper into the dungeon.

As they threw me into a dark cell, I realized that I was in grave danger. Kaida had condemned me as a witch, and I knew that the punishment for such a crime was death, either by hanging or being burnt alive.

But I refused to give up. I knew that I had to find a way to clear my name, to prove that my healing was genuine.

And so, I waited in the darkness, my mind racing with thoughts of escape and how to justify my actions. But as I waited, I heard a faint whisper in my ear.

"Akira, help me. Please." The voice said, echoing in my head.

It was Lyra's voice, weak. I smiled in the darkness, hope, there was still hope.

I would find a way to save Lyra, and myself. No matter what it took.

But just as I thought I had hope left, the cell door creaked open. A figure stood in the doorway, its eyes glowing with a red light.

"Akira..." the voice called out.

"Who are you!"

Chapter 2 Heavy is the head that wears the crown

KAEL's POV.

I sat on my throne, my eyes scanning the faces of the wolves seater in front of me. My pack gathered before me, their faces filled with fear and respect. I leaned forward, my voice low and menacing.

"Any weakness will be dealt with swiftly. I will not tolerate disobedience."

My gaze was on a young wolf, cowering in the corner. "You, Ryker, have failed me for the last time. You're banished from the pack."

I watched as Ryker brought his hands together, as a sign of him begging me, but I showed no mercy. I signaled to my guards, who dragged him away.

After each wolf went to his den, my beta, Zephyr, approached me. "Kael, may I have a word?"

I nodded, and Zephyr came near. "What is it, Zeph?"

"Your brother, Kieran... he's growing stronger. His pack is expanding, and his influence is spreading."

My eyes narrowed. "What are you saying, Zeph?"

Zephyr's voice was low and measured. "I'm saying that Kieran is a threat to your rule, to our pack's safety. He's ruthless, Kael, and he won't hesitate to destroy us. I also heard... he is planning on getting a mate soon, which means he wants an heir to solidify his throne."

My face twisted in rage. "I'll never let that happen. I'll crush him before he can even try."

Zephyr placed a hand on my shoulder. "Kael, listen to me. You're not invincible. You have fears and doubts. You can't face Kieran alone. I am here for you ."

I gritted my teeth at Zephyr's words, but I knew he was right. I was afraid of Kieran, afraid of his power and his influence, he was no ordinary wolf, he was a hybrid. But I couldn't show weakness, not even to Zephyr.

"I know, Zeph," I said finally. "But what choice do I have? I can't show weakness, not even to you."

Zephyr's expression softened. "You can trust me, Kael. I'm your beta, your friend. Together, we'll face Kieran and protect our pack."

I looked at Zephyr, and for a moment, I felt he was right. Maybe, just maybe, I didn't have to face this alone. Maybe Zephyr could help me defeat Kieran and secure my throne.

But I have a reputation to live up to. "Very well, Zeph. Let's prepare for war."

The anger in my heart grew, raising my determination to destroy Kieran and secure my rule. But at what cost?

Zephyr's eyes darted to mine, and I could sense his hesitation, he knew something. "Kael, there's something else. Something you need to know."

I raised an eyebrow. "What is it, Zeph?"

Zephyr's eyes scanned the room. "It's about the pack's history, Kael. About the secrets we've kept hidden for so long."

My curiosity got a hold of me, I leaned forward. "What secrets, Zeph?"

Zephyr's voice dropped to a whisper. "About the murders, Kael. The ones that happened when your father was alpha."

My eyes narrowed. "What about them?"

Zephyr's eyes darted away from kins. "Kael, your father didn't just kill rival wolves. He killed our pack members. Wolves who threatened his power, wolves who knew too much."

My mind reeled as I processed Zephyr's words. I had always known my father was ruthless, but I had never imagined he was capable of such evil deeds.

"Why are you telling me this, Zeph?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Zephyr's expression was grim. "Because, Kael, I think Kieran knows about the murders. And I think he's using that knowledge to gather support among the other packs. So it is best if you also know..."

My heart raced as I realized the implications. If Kieran revealed the truth about our pack's dark past, it could mean the end of our rule. The end of our pack. Killing a pack member for a reason like this is enough to start a war within the pack.

"What do we do, Zeph?" I asked, feeling desperation slowly rising.

Zephyr's eyes met mine, and I could see the determination there. "We need to stop Kieran, Kael. Before he can reveal the truth."

I nodded, my mind racing with strategies and plans. I knew that this would be a fight to the death, but I was ready. I would do whatever it took to protect my pack, my rule, and my secrets.

"Zeph, gather the guards," I said finally, my voice firm and leaving no room for arguments. "We'll need to take care of Kieran once and for all."

Zephyr nodded. "I'll get them ready, Kael. But we need to be careful. Kieran is cunning, and he won't go down without a fight."

I nodded, my mind already racing with strategies and plans. I knew that this would be a dangerous mission, but I was ready. I would do whatever it took to protect my pack, my rule, and my father's secrets.

Just as Zephyr was about to leave, a commotion was heard at the entrance of the chamber. The doors burst open, and a figure strode in, their eyes fixed on me.

"Kael," the figure growled, their voice dripping with malice. "We meet again."

My heart sank as I recognized the figure. It was Ryker, the same wolf I had banished from the pack just hours before. But now, he was back, and he looked more braver than ever.

"Ryker," I snarled, my hackles rising, ready for attack. "You're supposed to be banished. How did you get back in?"

Ryker sneered. "I have my ways, Kael. And I've come for revenge. I have teamed up with a better alpha and we will take you down."

"Ryker, you're not welcome here," Zephyr growled, his teeth bared. "Leave now, before things get ugly. Trust me, things get ugly real quick with the likes of you."

Ryker laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "I'm not going anywhere, Zephyr. I've come to help the right person take away your alpha title, and I won't let anyone stand in my way."

My eyes narrowed, my heart racing. I knew that this was going to be a fight to the death, and I was ready. But just as I was about to attack, Ryker's eyes darted to something behind me, and a sly smile spread across his face.

"Ah, Kael," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "I think you'll want to see this."

And with that, he gestured to the entrance of the chamber, where a figure stood, their eyes fixed on me.

My heart sank as I recognized the figure. It was Kieran, my brother, my enemy. And he looked more dangerous than ever.

"Hi, brother."

Chapter 3 Failure

Akira's POV.

I stood before Kaida, my head bowed in shame. I could feel her anger and grief, she had just lost her mother. I knew I had failed, and I couldn't blame her for blaming me.

"Akira, you failed," Kaida spat, her voice filled with venom . "Lyra is dead, and it's all your fault."

I felt a lump form in my throat as her words sunk in me. I knew I had done everything I could, but it hadn't been enough. I had tried to heal Lyra, to save her, but my efforts had been in vain.

"I'm sorry, Kaida," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I didn't mean for this to happen."

Kaida's expression turned even angrier. "Sorry? Sorry isn't enough, Akira. You're a disgrace to our pack. You're supposed to be our healer, our savior. But instead, you're a failure. You killed her!"

I felt tears gather at the corners of my eyes as Kaida's verbal thrashing continued. I knew I didn't deserve this, but I also knew that Kaida was sad and upset.

"You... you killed my sister with your black magic! I saw you... you failed to heal her and resorted to black magic. You are just like your mother. Good for nothing. " Kaida rained down insults on me.

At the mention of my mother's name, my eyes welled up with tears. I was only five years old when I watched my mother get burned to death.

The alpha of the pack then accused her of being a witch, my mother cried and pleaded for a chance to explain herself but her pleas fell on deaf ears and she was not given a fair trial.

A drop of tears fell down my eyes. " I know you are hurt, but please...do not bring my mother into this. She has nothing to do with this." I snapped at Kaida.

Her eyes went wide with shock but she quickly regained her composure. "You have some nerve to speak to me like that, you mutt. I should have killed you when I got the chance." Kaida snarled at me.

"What did I do wrong? I told you from the start that Lyra's body was rejecting all the treatments, I explained things to you. I told you about the risks and complications involved in this case but you refused to listen to me. You begged me to give it a try." I vented my anger on Kaida.

"Did I ask you to use black magic on the only surviving family member that I have left? Did I ? Answer me, you little mutt, did I ask you to kill my mother?" Kaida snapped and reached out her hand to hold my throat.

I instinctively moved back and slightly got away from her grip.

"You have to stop doing this. I understand you are sad and hurt but this is not my fault." I cried out, my voice a desperate plea.

"It is your fault! You killed my mother... you witch! You killed my mother." Kaida roared, her whole body shaking with rage.

"And I will make sure you do not live to Kill another innocent person!" She hissed and lunged herald at me.

Just then, the door burst open, and Talon walked in, his eyes blazing with anger. "Kaida, enough!" he growled. "Akira did everything she could. It's not her fault Lyra died."

I felt a sense of gratitude towards Talon for standing up for me, but I also knew that this was far from over. Kaida's expression turned even angrier , and I knew that she was not going to let this go easily.

"And who are you to defend her, Talon?" Kaida snarled. "You're just as guilty as she is. You're the one who brought her into our pack, who vouched for her. You are the one who chanted her praises!"

Talon's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched in anger. "I'm the one who saw something in Akira that you couldn't, Kaida. I'm the one who believed in her, who gave her a chance. And she's proved herself time and time again. Since your mother died, deal with it."

Kaida sneered. "Proved herself? Are you kidding me? She's a failure, Talon. A complete and utter failure."

I gritted my teeth at Kaida's words, but Talon's calm look kept me in check. He took a step forward, his eyes locked on Kaida.

"That's enough, Kaida," he growled. "You're not going to bully Akira anymore. She's done nothing but try to help this pack, and this is how you repay her?"

Kaida's expression turned even uglier, but Talon didn't back down. He stood tall, ready for whatever venom would come out of Kaida's mouth .

"Leave her alone, Kaida," he warned. "Or face me."

Kaida's eyes darted to Talon, then back to me. For a moment, I thought she was going to attack me, but then she seemed to think better of it. With a snarl, she turned and stormed out of the room, leaving Talon and me alone.

I let out a breath, my heart still racing from the confrontation. Talon turned to me, his eyes filled with care

"Akira, I'm sorry," he said, his voice gentle. "I know Kaida can be... difficult. But I promise you, I'll always have your back."

I smiled, feeling gratitude towards Talon. "Thanks, Talon," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "That means a lot to me. Thank you."

Talon nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. "Anytime, Akira. We're in this together, always."

And with that, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving me to process the events of the past few hours. I knew that this was far from over, and that Kaida would continue to be a thorn in my flesh.

But something in me told me... she would do something bad to me.
