The Immortal's Betrayal: A Forest Spirit's Fury

Author: : Xiao Wang
Genre: Fantasy
For two years, falling for Andrew Morris was my escape-an immortal like me, I just wanted a simple, mortal love, a normal life. But two days after he promised me a home in the Appalachians, his warm voice turned to ice: "She's the one. Take her." Suddenly, I was on my knees, wrists bound, watching Andrew hold another woman, Jennifer, as the entire town looked on. They had lured me here to be a human sacrifice for their "Forest Spirit," a desperate plea to save their crops. Imprisoned and drugged with a truth root, I watched Andrew try to steal my fortune, only for Jennifer to swoop in, expose their mutual deceit, and brutally slash my face. Pain and betrayal consumed me, an agony amplified by the bizarre echo of my ancient past, and a desperate, drug-addled whisper escaped my lips: "Caleb will know." Hours later, beaten and abandoned on a moss-covered altar, I was ready for death, until the true "Forest Spirit" appeared-not a monster, but the powerful, terrifying being I had spent centuries running from, the very one who had "cursed" me with endless life: Caleb.

Introduction

For two years, falling for Andrew Morris was my escape-an immortal like me, I just wanted a simple, mortal love, a normal life.

But two days after he promised me a home in the Appalachians, his warm voice turned to ice: "She's the one. Take her."

Suddenly, I was on my knees, wrists bound, watching Andrew hold another woman, Jennifer, as the entire town looked on.

Pain and betrayal consumed me, an agony amplified by the bizarre echo of my ancient past, and a desperate, drug-addled whisper escaped my lips: "Caleb will know."

Hours later, beaten and abandoned on a moss-covered altar, I was ready for death, until the true "Forest Spirit" appeared-not a monster, but the powerful, terrifying being I had spent centuries running from, the very one who had "cursed" me with endless life: Caleb.

Chapter 1

"You're going to love it, Nicole. It's... different. But it's my home."

Andrew Morris said that to me two days ago, his hand resting on my knee as we drove deeper into the Appalachian Mountains. His voice was warm, the way it always was. For two years, that warmth had been my anchor.

Now, that same voice was ice.

"She's the one. Take her."

I was on my knees on the cold, damp earth of his hometown. Rough hands held my arms, twisting them behind my back. The whole town seemed to be there, their faces grim and shadowed in the failing light.

Andrew stood a few feet away, his arm wrapped protectively around another woman. Jennifer Todd. I recognized her from the photos in his wallet, the ones he told me were of his "cousin." She was pretty, with a hard glint in her eyes that the photos never captured.

She was the one who spoke next, her voice dripping with satisfaction.

"You understand, don't you, Nicole? It was either you or me. And I've been chosen since I was a girl. It's not fair."

My mind couldn't process the speed of it all. The welcome dinner that turned into an ambush. The friendly smiles that vanished. The man I loved, the man I was going to marry, stood there as they tied my wrists with coarse rope.

"Andrew, what is this? What are you doing?" My voice was a choked whisper.

He wouldn't look at me. He just stared at a point over my head, his jaw tight. "It's for the good of the town, Nicole. We need to give the Forest Spirit a bride. To keep us safe. To make sure the crops grow."

He said it like he was explaining a business deal. Cold. Detached.

"A bride? A sacrifice?" The words felt insane on my tongue. "You brought me here to be a sacrifice?"

Jennifer laughed, a short, ugly sound. "Someone has to do it. Andrew loves me. He wasn't going to let them take me."

The town elders, two withered old men with dead eyes, stepped forward. They grabbed the rope tied to my wrists and pulled me forward.

"She'll be purified for three days," one of them rasped. "Then we make the offering."

Andrew finally looked at me then. His eyes were cold, empty. He had made his choice. I was just collateral damage.

They dragged me away from the village, into the dark woods that pressed in on all sides. The last thing I saw was Andrew pulling Jennifer into a tight embrace, kissing her like he used to kiss me.

The betrayal was a physical thing, a sickness that rose in my throat. I had run from a world of monsters and power centuries ago, seeking the simple, honest love of a mortal man.

And I had chosen him.

Chapter 2

They threw me into a dilapidated chapel deep in the forest. The door slammed shut, the heavy bolt sliding into place with a sound of finality. It was cold, the kind of damp chill that seeps into your bones. The only light came from a single high window, barred and grimy.

I was alone.

They left me a thin, scratchy blanket and a bucket of water. That was it. For three days, they had said. Three days of "purification."

The whole situation was nightmarish, but underneath the terror, something else stirred. A strange, haunting familiarity.

I' ve been here before.

The thought came unbidden, a ghost from a past I had spent centuries trying to bury. The cold stone floor. The isolation. The feeling of being an offering.

Fragments of memory flickered at the edge of my consciousness. A different forest, older, darker. A different altar, made of ancient, moss-covered stone. A presence, powerful and overwhelming, that was not fear but... something else.

I pushed the thoughts away. I had built a life for myself, a normal life. I was Nicole Chavez, a wealthy woman who enjoyed art, travel, and the company of a man I thought I knew. I was not that other person, the one who had lived a thousand lives and known beings that were not human.

But the memories wouldn't stay buried. They were triggered by the scent of the damp earth, the rough texture of the stone walls.

I remembered a voice, deep and resonant, full of a possessive love that both thrilled and terrified me.

You will see, my love. You will see how fleeting they are. And you will come back to me.

Caleb.

His name was a wound. The entity I had run from. The one who had "cursed" me with this endless life, this resilience that was now my only hope. He had done it out of spite, out of a broken heart, so I would watch everyone I ever cared for wither and die. He wanted me to learn that his immortal love was the only constant.

I had hated him for it. I had spent centuries proving him wrong, accumulating wealth, moving from city to city, building new lives, determined to find happiness in the mortal world he so disdained.

And it had all led me here. To a cheap imitation of my past, betrayed by a pathetic, greedy man.

The irony was so bitter it made me want to laugh, but all that came out was a dry, ragged sob.
