Chapter 1 Prologue

Run along, love. Take her along with you. I promise to be right behind you. I'll keep them at bay for as long as it takes you both to get to safety." Dad said as he kissed Mum on the lips. "Please stay safe, both of you."

Those were my father's final words as he ushered Mum and me out through the back door. The sound of metal clanging could be heard, and I could smell blood and smoke from houses that had been set ablaze.

Mum didn't waste time crying as she picked me up from the ground and ran with me into the woods. A whimper escaped my lips, and Mum drew my head close to her chest.

"Don't worry, cupcake. Dad is right behind us. He never breaks his promises," Mum assured me, and I felt a glimmer of hope. I trusted Mum and Dad and knew they wouldn't lie to me because they never had before.

Earlier, everything had been perfect. The Pack members had gathered for our regular folktales, which were always read to us by the Pack's oldest Alpha. We were so engrossed in it that we didn't hear them coming.

The sound of horses disrupted everything, and soon I saw bodies falling to the ground and arrows attached to those bodies. I was still in a state of confusion when Dad yanked me by the waist and rushed into the house, dropping me on my feet as he bolted the doors tightly.

I rushed into my mother's arms, and as she kneaded my back, we heard screams and the sound of things being sliced through and water splattering on the ground, except I knew it wasn't water but blood. I was scared. I knew we were going to die too.

"The vampires are attacking us. They must have been sent here by the vampire king," I heard Dad say to Mum.

"What are we going to do? We know why they are here. We should have escaped a long time ago. Now they know about it. What are we going to do?" Mum questioned Dad?

They were speaking in some kind of secret code that I couldn't understand, but what I did understand was that the attackers were vampires on the hunt for someone, but who could it be that they would attack the entire Pack just to find the person?

"This is not the time to blame ourselves. I promise I'll keep you both safe. I'll do what I can while you run out the back door and into the woods. An old friend of mine lives there, and he will protect you both," Dad said to Mum before crouching down to look me in the eyes.

"Hey, little tiger, look after and protect your mother, okay? I love you." Dad kissed my forehead.

I knew what was going to happen, that dad wouldn't make it, but I had to have some hope because he had promised to be right behind us.

"Look over there! Someone is running towards there!" I grabbed mum tightly after hearing one of the vampires yell out. When we reached a narrow path, Mum placed me among the bushes and trees and smiled as she gently rubbed my head.

"I want you to be still and quiet, my little princess. Don't make a sound. Whatever you do, love, don't make a sound, and don't come out. Keep an eye on them, and when they're gone, run. Run without looking back. Promise me, love," she said, extending her little finger to seal the promise.

As I shook my head, I burst into tears.

"No, Mum, I can't leave you. I'm supposed to protect you at all costs. I promised Dad that I would protect you. I can't leave you and hide." I managed to say through my tears.

Mum smiled. "When you're old enough, protect me. I'm sorry this happened to us, but I'm willing to give up everything to ensure your safety. Try to be happy and discover your true self. Be strong, and when you are, you will be able to avenge your father and me. I love you, pumpkin." She kissed me on the forehead.

She was late in escaping, and as she was about to flee, she was captured by a group of vampires, who laughed and mocked her as they pushed her back and forth until she fell to the ground. Right in front of my eyes, one vampire stabbed my mother in the heart, and another beheaded her.

I wanted to scream and lash out at them, but someone was holding me tightly, and their other hand was covering my mouth.

I felt a sharp pain in the back of my neck, my vision blurred, and I slipped into the darkness.

Chapter 2 One

CHLOE

THIRTEEN YEARS LATER

"No... Please, Dad, Mum, run with me, please, let's run together, that way we'll all be safe. Please!" I begged as I saw the vampires raise their swords toward my parents. "Get away from them... Get the fvck away from them! Mum! Dad!. No!!"

My body was dripping with sweat when I woke up. I had yet another nightmare. I couldn't remember the last time I slept without having nightmares of how the vampires raided my Pack and killed everyone, including my parents. Or how my house was razed with my father inside and how my mother was killed right in front of my eyes. All because the vampire king desired to demonstrate to the world that he was the king and should be feared.

Well, I didn't give a fvck about him. He took two valuable gifts from me, gifts that can never be replaced, my parents, so I will make certain that I avenge them.

I thought of ways to kill him when I finally come in contact with him and came to the conclusion that making him suffer and bleed slowly before staking his heart was the best choice. I was going to give him a painful death.

The sound of my alarm jolted me out of my reverie, and as I slowly rose from my bed to turn it off, I heard a knock on the door.

"Are you still asleep, little princess?" Trisha's voice came from the other side of the door.

Trisha was Damien's wife, the man who had saved me that night. They decided to raise me as their child because they couldn't have their own. I was grateful to Damien because I know if he hadn't saved my life back then, I would have broken my mother's promise and charged after the vampires, and I would have most likely been killed by now. I wouldn't have been able to avenge my parents' deaths.

"I'm coming in right now, Chloe." She walked in through the door, standing in front of me, and raised my chin to face her. "Are you all right, princess?"

"Mum, I'm fine. I just couldn't sleep at night, but other than that, I'm fine," I lied.

Calling them Mum and Dad always made them smile. I remembered how I always cried about wanting to be with my parents and how they should take me there. It took years for me to adjust to life without my birth parents and to accept Damien and Trisha as my parents. Even though Damien was close to my father, he was still a stranger to me, and even though I had grown accustomed to them, I still yearned for my parents and wanted to avenge their deaths.

"How come you couldn't sleep? Are you sick, or did you have nightmares?" With a worried expression on her face, she asked.

"Nothing like that, Mum. I was just scared, that's all. It's nothing serious," I said, trying not to give her any signs that something was wrong with me. I didn't want to bother her by telling her about the nightmares I'd been having since seeing my parents killed in front of me.

They have both done well in raising a 7-year-old who was initially unkind to them. Despite the fact that I was not their biological child, they showered me with gifts, love, and affection.

I attended the best high school and recently received a scholarship to one of the best colleges. All of this would not have happened if they didn't care about me. That was more than enough for me, but I couldn't tell them about my dreams or my revenge plans. I planned to do everything on my own.

"Chloe, did you hear what I just said?"

Trisha's voice brought me back to the present. I realized I had zoned out because I had only heard her last sentence. I had forgotten we were in the middle of a conversation and had become totally absorbed in thoughts of the past and my plan for vengeance.

"I'm sorry, mum, could you please repeat what you said?" I politely asked.

"I asked if you were okay, but seeing you act like this just confirmed my fears that you aren't. So spill it, love, or I'll go tell your father. You know how he gets under your skin until you spill," she warned.

I had no choice but to make an excuse to tell her because if she succeeded in bringing Damien over, I would be forced to tell him everything. He had a way of getting all the answers he needed from me.

"No, mum, you don't have to. I'll tell you everything you want to know... I'm just scared... Today is my first day of college, and I'm not sure if I'll make new friends, if anyone will like me, or if I'll be able to find my way around," I replied, telling yet another lie.

I was uninterested in school. By being the loner in high school, I was able to blend in well. I didn't have any friends and didn't try to make any.

"Is that why you're looking this way, baby? There's nothing to worry about. You will do well, as you have always done, and you will come out great, as you did in high school. There's nothing to worry about," she said as she cupped my cheeks in her hands. "I believe you will do exceptionally well."

"I'm not sure about that. I have this pang in my stomach that tells me I'm not going to do well," I said, revealing my stomach to her, which made her laugh.

"Silly, you. You'll be fine. Now go get ready for school; you don't want to be late on your first day of college. Or would you prefer to skip school today?" Trisha asked, and I shook my head.

"No, not at all. Thank you, Mum, for boosting me up this morning. I feel like I can do anything," I teased, and she smiled and kissed my forehead before leaving the room.

I dashed to the bathroom to clean up, and when I was finished, I dressed in black trousers, a black hoodie, and matching black shoes, and then tied my hair into a ponytail before applying powder and lipstick to my face just to make Trisha happy. If I didn't put on makeup, I would be forced to sit while she applies heavy makeup to my face. It was all for the best.

I grabbed my bag and dashed downstairs to find Damien and Trisha already eating breakfast in the dining room. I said hello to Damien before sitting down to eat my meal.

"Good morning, little one. Did you sleep well?" Damien asked, using the nickname I hated the most.

"I'm not little, Dad. I'm a grown-up, and yes, I slept well," I replied.

"Hohoho. She is now speaking big," Damien teased. "I remember changing your diapers when you were little."

"Dad, please stop... It's embarrassing, please." I pleaded, and he burst out laughing.

"All right, I'll stop. Should I drop you off on my way to work?"

"No, Dad, that won't be necessary. I'd rather take the bus... shoot! If I don't hurry, I'll miss the bus," I said as I stuffed my mouth and stood up. I rushed out of the house, after kissing both of their cheeks, to catch the next bus to school.

Trisha, Damien, and I, along with less than 15 others, were the only survivors of the vampire king's and his enemies' bloody night parade. We wandered around for a long time before arriving in Roseville, a small town where vampires, werewolves, and humans cohabited.

Even though Roseville was peaceful, we were all afraid of the unknown. No one knew when the vampire king would strike again, so everyone was on high alert. After being a victim of the vampire king's brutality, everyone was on high alert to avoid being caught off guard again.

I arrived at the bus stop just in time. The bus arrived at the same time I did. I boarded the bus and paid before settling into a window seat. As the bus sped away, I rested my head on the window, allowing the gentle breeze to cool my face.

I knew I had to blend in for the time being until I could finally carry out my mission.

Chapter 3 Two

CHLOE

Since the vampire king's attack, a lot changed. I was awestruck that vampires, werewolves, and humans could coexist. Vampires and werewolves were sworn enemies, while humans were hunters are born to hunt both vampires and werewolves, but we all lived together because we all had one enemy, the vampire king, who wanted everyone to bow and surround their will to him.

Everyone was trying to work together to ensure their safety, but that didn't give some vampires the right to think they were better than the rest of the race. It was in their blood, and it didn't appear that it would change anytime soon.

I want the vampire race destroyed entirely if it were up to me. The world will be a better place without them. There would have been no vampire king if they had not existed, and my parents would still be alive, watching me go to school and graduate as the best student, and they would have been proud of me, and the world would be at peace.

I've often wondered why humans, so-called vampires, and werewolves didn't just join forces together and attack the vampire king all at once, rather than patiently waiting for the day he attacks them. This was a mystery I didn't think I'd be able to unravel anytime soon.

Everyone in Roseville was waiting for the vampire king to come and attack them, and they weren't the only ones. I was also waiting for him to come, and I had been praying to the moon goddess to ensure he came along with his troops. I had promised myself that I would take him along with me to my grave.

A tap on my shoulder jolted me out of my thoughts, and I turned to face the person who had tapped me on the shoulder. A middle-aged woman with a smile on her face.

"Isn't this your bus stop?" When she asked, I turned around to see that she was right. I'd gotten lost in my thoughts yet again.

After thanking the woman, I stepped off the bus and pulled my hoodie over my head. I didn't like exposing myself because I wanted my face to remain a mystery to everyone, and I tended to hide when the place was crowded because I wasn't a fan of people, especially in places where vampires lured around.

As I walked down the school's entrance, I noticed a few things: older students were in groups exchanging pleasantries, while freshers like myself were frantically trying to register for their courses.

I knew it wasn't going to be easy. College was nothing like high school. In high school, there were students at the school's entrance waiting to assist new students, but in college, everyone was too busy doing their own thing to care if they were new or not.

Nobody cared if you were a vampire, werewolf, or human at Greenfield High. They all saw each other as one, and each specie was present in every friend group you saw. I don't think I want to be found in such groups; I'd rather hang out with humans than vampires. I don't think I'll ever be friends with a vampire.

I was lost in thought when someone bumped into me, causing me to fall hard to the ground.

"Hey! Watch where you're going, loser," a guy in black jean trousers, and a striped shirt said as he walked by me without stopping to apologize. I assumed it was an accident at first because I wasn't looking where I was going, and I assumed it was the same with him, but the smirk on his face told me it was a deliberate act and he wanted to cause trouble.

"What a dumb ass. I'd stay clear of him if I were you," a voice behind me said, and I turned to look. It was a guy. "I hope you're all right?"

"I'm fine, thanks for asking," I said.

"No worries. If you want, I can help you in getting back on your feet." He extended his hands towards me, which I accepted while he pulled up.

"Thank you-" I was dazzled by the sight in front of me. I'd only seen handsome and beautiful people from afar, so standing close to one was not something I expected anytime soon. He was tall and well-built, with light green eyes. His features screamed hot and dangerous.

"My name is Axel Moore. I'm in the faculty of life sciences, department of biochemistry. You?" he asked.

"Huh.... My name is Chloe Gillian, same faculty and department," I replied, withdrawing my hand from his grip.

"I'm sorry about the... uh... your hands. Anyway, have you finished your registration?"

"Nah, not yet. I was about to go there when that rude guy over there bumped into me. He's a jerk and a moron to act like that," I let out.

"Watch what you say around here. According to rumors, he is a wealthy man's son, and his father is the one who provides the school with everything we need. I don't know who the father is, but just be careful," a voice from behind us said, startling us.

"And you are?" Axel questioned.

"Oh my... Where are my manners? I'm Amalia, a freshman like you, and we happen to be in the same department. I'm sorry I overheard your conversation," she replied with a smile. Just then, a guy approached us, panting heavily.

"Amalia... So this is where you've been all along. I've been looking for you. We were supposed to be registering for our courses," the guy whined.

"I'm sorry, I was just making new friends. They are freshmen in the same department as us. We can help them," she explained.

"Hi, guys. My name is Diego Rodriques, and I'm her cousin."

"I'm Chloe Gillian."

"I'm Axel Moore."

"It's a pleasure to meet you both. Well, let's go, unless you all want to miss today's first class," Amalia said, and we nodded before following them to register for our classes. Fortunately, we were able to meet the first-class halfway.

I was thrilled that we were seated in the back. I hated sitting in the front because it drew attention to you, and I hated attention in general.

"Hey, Chloe eyes up front. Guess who just walked in?" Amalia directed my attention to the board. It was the same guy who had knocked me down and refused to apologize. I was going to make him apologize no matter what. My gaze met his, and we locked gazes.

I felt my heart skip a beat as he stared at me with those deep brown eyes, so I quickly averted my gaze from him and returned it to Amalia.

"He is the jerk who bumped into me without apologizing," I explained. I recognized him right away because of his outfit, which I made a point of remembering before he walked away from me.

"I know, that's why I drew your attention, and guess what, he's our course mate. This will be interesting," Amalia said, rubbing her hands together.

"I'm going to approach him."

"No, you are not. Remember what Amalia told us earlier," Axel warned.

"Who cares if his father is sponsoring the school? He made a mistake and should accept responsibility for it. He has no right to run into someone, not apologize, and then be rude to the person. I'm going to go up to him. Don't bother trying to stop me."
