The Housekeeper's Deception

Author: : Elroy Notman
Genre: Modern
I'd sent my secretary to find the last limited-edition "Starlight Princess" doll in the country for my daughter's birthday. It was the only thing she'd asked for. But that night, I saw a photo of my housekeeper's son holding the exact same doll. When I video-called home, my daughter's teacher snatched the phone, accused her of being a thief, and hung up on me. When I rushed to the school, I found the teacher shoving my daughter, calling her a low-class brat. My housekeeper, Evalena, showed up wearing my Chanel jacket, claiming she was the mistress of the house and I was a fired nanny. Then my own husband, Austyn, arrived and sided with them. He publicly comforted Evalena's son, who called him "Daddy," while treating me like a delusional former employee. In front of everyone, they painted me as a poor, jealous mistress trying to ruin their perfect family. I finally understood this wasn't just a simple affair; it was a long-planned coup to steal my entire life. When my husband threatened me with divorce, smugly believing he was entitled to half of my family's fortune, I walked out, got into my car, and made a single phone call. "It's Kimberly Miller," I told the head of my family's board. "Suspend all of Austyn Hester's corporate accounts. Effective immediately."

When my husband threatened me with divorce, smugly believing he was entitled to half of my family's fortune, I walked out, got into my car, and made a single phone call.

Chapter 1

I was supposed to be in Zurich closing a seven-figure deal, but all I could think about was my daughter, Lily. Her fifth birthday was tomorrow, and for the first time, I wouldn't be there. The guilt was a heavy weight in my hotel suite.

To make up for it, I had my secretary, Sarah, track down the last limited edition "Starlight Princess" doll in the country. It was the only thing Lily had asked for. "Make sure it's gift-wrapped perfectly, Sarah. And a big pink bow. It has to be there first thing in the morning."

Later that night, unable to sleep, I scrolled through my social media feed. A post from our live-in housekeeper, Evalena Dotson, made me stop. It was a picture of her son, Jaylin, holding a "Starlight Princess" doll. It looked identical to the one I' d just bought for Lily. A cold feeling started in my stomach. Evalena never spent that kind of money.

I immediately placed a video call to the house. I needed to see Lily, to make sure her doll had arrived.

Lily' s small face appeared on the screen, her eyes red and puffy. She was hiding in her playroom, whispering. "Mommy?" Her voice trembled.

"Hi, sweetie. Did you get my present?"

She hesitated, looking over her shoulder. "I... I did, Mommy. But..."

Suddenly, a harsh voice cut through the call. "Lily Hester, what did I tell you about stealing? That doll belongs to Jaylin! You give it back right now!" It was her kindergarten teacher, Ms. Albright. The screen shook as if the phone was snatched away. "Who is this? Don't call this number again!" The call ended abruptly.

I tried calling back, but the line was busy. I tried the school's main line. No answer. I opened the parent group chat to ask what was happening, only to find a notification: "You have been removed from the group." My blood ran cold.

I called Sarah. "Cancel the rest of my trip. Book me the first flight home. Now."

Eighteen hours later, I didn't go home. I went straight to Lily's kindergarten. I slipped in through a side entrance, my heart pounding in my chest. I followed the sound of Ms. Albright's shrill voice to an empty classroom. Through the window in the door, I saw it.

My daughter was backed into a corner, and Ms. Albright was standing over her, her face twisted with rage. "You little liar! A low-class brat like you doesn' t deserve nice things. You should be grateful Mrs. Gould even lets you play with her son!"

Then, she shoved Lily, hard. Lily stumbled and fell to the floor.

A blind, hot rage washed over me. I slammed the door open, the wood cracking against the wall. I didn't say a word. I crossed the room in three strides and shoved Ms. Albright away from my daughter. She staggered back, her eyes wide with shock.

"Who do you think you are?" she shrieked, clutching her arm. "Security! Get this crazy woman out of here! This is our housekeeper, Evalena's replacement. She's trespassing!"

Lily scrambled up from the floor, tears streaming down her face, and ran to me, burying her face in my legs. "Mommy! Mommy, you're back!"

I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight. I looked at Ms. Albright, my voice low and dangerous. "I am not the housekeeper."

Ms. Albright laughed, a sharp, ugly sound. "Oh, please. I know who you are. Evalena-Mrs. Gould-told me all about you. A desperate woman trying to climb the social ladder. She fired you this morning for stealing."

"Call the police," I said, my voice shaking with fury. "Call them right now."

She snatched the phone off her desk but didn't dial. "I don't need to. The school's owner, Mr. Hester, is a very good friend of Mrs. Gould's husband. You'll be lucky if we don't press charges."

"Mrs. Gould already told me," she continued, her voice dripping with scorn, "that you were let go. You have no business being here. Now get out before I have you physically removed."

I held my daughter closer. "You're going to regret this. Every word. Every action."

The teacher sneered. "Is that a threat? From a fired nanny? Don't make me laugh. In fact, I'll call Mrs. Gould right now. She'll confirm who the real mistress of the house is." She tapped her phone screen with a triumphant look.

A moment later, the door swung open again. It was Evalena, my housekeeper. And she stared at me, a slow, malicious smile spreading across her face. "Yes, Ms. Albright? You called? Oh, and look who it is. I thought I told you that you were fired."

Chapter 2

I stared at Evalena. She was wearing my clothes-a Chanel tweed jacket I' d left in my closet. My jacket. The shock was so profound it left me speechless. It was one thing to see a picture, another to see the theft worn so brazenly in front of me.

Now I understood. The doll wasn't a coincidence. She had stolen it. She had stolen the gift I bought for my daughter and given it to her own son.

"Evalena," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "What are you doing?"

She laughed, a full-throated, mocking sound that filled the small room. "What am I doing? I'm enjoying my life, Kimberly. Something you know nothing about. You're just the help. You tried to steal from me, and now you're trying to attack my son's teacher? You have a lot of nerve."

Ms. Albright immediately sided with her. "You see? And she had the audacity to bring her little thief of a daughter here to cause more trouble."

I lunged forward, wanting to rip that jacket off her, to slap that smirk off her face, but Ms. Albright stepped in my way, blocking me.

"That's enough!" the teacher yelled, pushing me back. I stumbled, my heel catching on the linoleum, and fell to the ground. The hard floor sent a jolt of pain up my spine.

"Oh, Mrs. Gould, are you alright?" Ms. Albright said, turning to Evalena with a sickeningly sweet expression of concern. "This woman is clearly unstable."

I pushed myself up, my hands shaking. I looked past the teacher, directly at Evalena. "You are Evalena Dotson. You are my housekeeper. And you will be in jail by the end of the day."

Ms. Albright scoffed loudly. "Her name is Gould. Mrs. Evalena Gould. And you're delusional."

"She thinks just because she was our nanny for a while, she can make up these fantasies," Evalena added, shaking her head with fake pity.

"This is insane," I said, looking from one smug face to the other. The sheer absurdity of it was making my head spin. They had created a completely false reality, and this teacher had bought it completely.

I took a deep breath, pushing down the rage. Arguing with them was pointless. It was like screaming at a wall. I needed to be smart.

I pulled Lily into my arms, stroking her hair. She was trembling, her small body tense with fear. I held her close, letting her feel my warmth, my presence.

I looked up, my eyes locking with Evalena' s. The fury inside me had cooled into something harder, something colder. Let them have their moment.

"Fine," I said, my voice even. "Let's wait. Let's wait for my husband to get here. Let's see what Austyn Hester has to say about all this."

I knew, with a sinking feeling in my gut, that his arrival wouldn't solve this. It would only make everything worse.

Chapter 3

A few minutes later, a silver luxury sedan pulled up in front of the school. Austyn Hester, my husband, stepped out. He was dressed impeccably in a tailored suit, looking every bit the wealthy, powerful man the world thought he was.

"Oh, Mr. Hester, thank goodness you're here!" Ms. Albright gushed, rushing to his side. "This deranged woman attacked me and has been terrorizing Mrs. Gould!"

Jaylin ran to Austyn, burying his face in his leg and crying dramatically. "Daddy, that mean lady's daughter stole my doll! And then the lady pushed my teacher!"

Daddy. The word hit me. Jaylin had never called Austyn that before. Not in front of me.

Austyn' s eyes met mine over the heads of the others. I saw a flicker of panic, a brief moment of guilt, before his expression hardened into a cool mask of indifference.

He walked over, his expensive shoes clicking on the floor. He didn't look at me; he looked at Evalena. "Are you okay, Eva?" he asked, his voice soft with a concern he had never once shown me.

He tried to pull me aside, whispering, "Kim, what is going on? Let's not make a scene."

I ignored his hand on my arm. My eyes were fixed on the necklace around Evalena' s neck-a stunning emerald and diamond piece. It was a one-of-a-kind anniversary gift from my father. My necklace.

"That's a beautiful necklace, Evalena," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "It looks familiar."

Austyn' s grip tightened. "Kim, stop it. We'll talk about this at home."

"No," I said, pulling my arm away. "We'll talk about it now. I want you to tell Ms. Albright who I am. And I want you to tell her who she is." I pointed a shaking finger at Evalena.

Austyn' s face flushed with anger. "Don't be ridiculous." He tried to laugh it off, turning to the teacher. "I apologize for my... former employee. She's been having some emotional problems since we had to let her go."

I stared at him, the final piece of the puzzle clicking into place. He wasn't just ignoring this. He was part of it. He and Evalena, his distant cousin I' d hired out of pity, had planned this together.

I felt a wave of nausea. The man I married. The father of my child.

"You're a monster," I whispered, the words catching in my throat. I looked at Evalena, who was now clinging to Austyn's arm, a triumphant smirk on her face.

I lunged at her. I didn't care about being strategic anymore. I wanted to hurt her.

Evalena shrieked and shoved me back. "Get away from me, you psycho! Austyn is my husband! I'm the real Mrs. Hester! You're just a jealous mistress trying to ruin our family!"

Her words were so shocking, so utterly false, that for a second, everyone froze. Then all hell broke loose. We were screaming, clawing at each other. My hands tangled in her hair, and hers scratched at my face. It was a messy, ugly brawl in the middle of a kindergarten classroom.

During the struggle, my hand caught on the emerald necklace. There was a sharp snap. The priceless gems scattered across the floor like green ice.

School staff finally rushed in and pulled us apart. Evalena fell to the floor, sobbing hysterically. "My necklace! She broke my necklace! It was a gift from my husband!"

Ms. Albright and the other staff members looked at me with pure disgust, their minds already made up. I was no longer just a crazy ex-nanny. I was a poor, thieving mistress who had just destroyed a fortune.
