ELEONORA POV:
I sat impeccably straight, watching the lawyer, Mr. Finch, pull two heavy document folders from his leather briefcase.
The silence in the grand salon was suffocating-thick with stale cigar smoke and the poisonous scent of victory.
Across the mahogany table, my stepsister, Charlize, was practically vibrating with excitement. She pressed her sapphire-clad body against Julian Carlisle, her innocent blue eyes shining with a light that was anything but.
Julian, my former fiancé, shot a brief glance in my direction. His amber eyes held a mix of contempt and the slick relief of a man who had successfully traded a 'defective' woman for a brighter toy.
My father, Arthur Valencia, sat in the main armchair, ignoring me completely. To him, I was merely a line item being crossed off a ledger.
They were all waiting. Waiting for the hysterical breakdown. Waiting for the screaming, the crying, or the desperate tears.
I gave them nothing. Just absolute, chilling composure.
"As per the agreement," Mr. Finch cleared his throat, his mechanical voice breaking the heavy air, "Miss Charlize Sinclair will be joined in matrimony with Mr. Julian Carlisle. The wedding is set for this Saturday."
A small, delighted gasp escaped Charlize's lips. Arthur raised his glass in a silent toast to Julian.
"And," Mr. Finch picked up the second folder, his tone dipping into something resembling pity, "Miss Eleonora Valencia will be wed to the eldest son, Mr. Damien Vincenzo Carlisle. Effective immediately."
The air in the room froze.
Damien Carlisle. The legendary enforcer of the New York underworld, reduced by a bomb to a paralyzed, rotting shell who wasn't expected to survive the month.
A cruel, triumphant smile touched Charlize's lips before she quickly masked it with fake sorrow. She glided over to me, sinking into a graceful crouch, and took my cold hand in hers.
"Oh, Eleonora..." Charlize whispered, her voice a fake, saccharine whimper meant to twist the knife. "I am so, so sorry. But you know... marrying a dying man is the only way you can still be useful to Father. At least you'll be a widow soon."
I didn't pull my hand away.
Instead, my thumb moved, finding a precise nerve cluster on her wrist. I pressed down-just enough to send a sharp, paralyzing bolt of agony shooting up her arm, yet completely invisible to the rest of the room.
Charlize's breath hitched, her eyes widening in sudden, terrified shock. She tried to yank her hand back, but my grip was steel.
I leaned down, my lips brushing her ear, my voice smoother than crushed velvet. "Useful? Oh, my dear sister... I think this is the perfect arrangement."
I released her hand. Charlize stumbled backward, clutching her throbbing wrist, her face drained of color as she stared at me as if looking at a ghost.
I stood up slowly, stepping into the dim afternoon light.
Arthur's brow furrowed in deep irritation. "I see you've finally stopped that pathetic suicide stunt from few days ago," he barked, hiding his growing unease behind a harsh, commanding tone. "The car will be here in twenty minutes. Go pack your things."
I didn't argue. I didn't cry.
Instead, I looked my father dead in the eye and gave him a flawless, lingering curtsy-a gesture of supreme etiquette dripping with silent, mocking contempt.
"As you wish, Father," I murmured, my lips curving into a dark, knowing smile.
I turned on my heel, my dress sweeping through the air as I walked toward the grand staircase with absolute, measured composure. I could feel Julian's eyes burning into my back-no longer just filled with contempt, but with a sharp, unsettling confusion.
Upstairs, my maid Penny was waiting by my bedroom door, her eyes red and swollen. "Miss! How could they do this? Mr. Damien... they say he's a living corpse!"
"I know," I cut her off softly, closing the door behind us.
I walked over to the vanity table. Looking into the mirror, I unclipped the diamonds from my ears and unclasped the heavy ruby necklace from my throat, tossing them onto the polished wood like trash.
These belonged to the Valencia family. Cheap trinkets from a dying house.
They thought they were sending me to a graveyard. They thought I was a broken girl being disposed of.
A truly cold smile finally curved across my lips.
A dying man? No.
He would be the cornerstone of my new life.
ELEONORA POV:
I had just changed into a pair of sleek, practical black trousers and a charcoal silk blouse when my bedroom door was pushed open without the courtesy of a knock.
Charlize swept in, draped in a magnificent white evening gown that trailed behind her like a bridal veil. She waved away the maid who followed her, forcing the girl to wait outside before shutting the door.
She surveyed my simple, soon-to-be-abandoned room, her eyes glinting with the toxic satisfaction of a victor.
"So pitiful, sister," Charlize sighed, drifting toward my mahogany vanity table. "Leaving the family empire behind for a graveyard. You can't even take any of this with you."
I leaned against the window frame, arms crossed over my chest, watching her perform in cold, clinical silence.
My lack of reaction clearly irritated her. She picked up a silver antique jewelry box-the one my late mother had left me-and flipped it open. Inside lay a single vintage lipstick and a faded framed photograph of my mother.
"I hear Damien's estate is in the most remote part of the upstate woods," Charlize mocked, playing with the lipstick between her manicured fingers. "Old, rotting, and decrepit. Just like him. But Father said it doesn't matter... he won't even last the month."
Seeing that I still didn't flinch, Charlize's fake smile turned utterly vicious. She leaned closer, her eyes flashing with raw jealousy.
"You always acted like you were so much better than me, Eleonora," she venomously whispered. "Well, look at you now! You're being shipped off to nurse a corpses while I take your crown! I will be the future mistress of the Carlisle syndicate!"
When I remained unmoved, her face twisted in frustration. She turned her malice toward the only thing left in the box.
"And your dead mother?" Charlize spat, digging her sharp, sapphire-painted fingernail directly into the glass of the photo, dragging it hard enough to leave a deep, jagged scratch right across my mother's face. "She died a discarded line item in Father's ledger, just like-"
She didn't get to finish the sentence.
She had touched my trigger.
I didn't slap her. I moved faster than her eyes could track.
My hand shot forward, grabbing her right wrist with a crushing grip. With a flick of my thumb against the median nerve, a sharp, paralytic bolt of pain shot through her arm, forcing her fingers to instantly pop open. The jewelry box rattled safely onto the table.
Before Charlize could even scream, my other hand clamped around her throat like an iron vise.
SLAM!
I shoved her hard against the cold stone wall. Her pristine white gown crumpled against the rough surface in stark, ironic contrast to my dark attire.
My arm remained immovable, my thumb pressing lightly against her carotid artery-just enough to restrict her breath without killing her. Her small, pampered body writhed uselessly against my strength, making pathetic, choked gurgles.
The arrogance in her eyes shattered into pure, primal terror.
"You..." she choked out, her face rapidly turning red from lack of oxygen.
"You seem to have misunderstood something, Charlize," I said, my voice so cold it felt stripped of all human emotion. "I am not arguing with you. I am educating you."
I loosened my grip slightly-just enough to let a tiny gasp of air enter her lungs, but kept her pinned firmly against the wall.
"First," I leaned close to her ear, my tone smooth as silk yet deadly as cyanide. "From this day forward, I am Damien Carlisle's wife. In our syndicate, rank is everything. When you see me, you will address me as 'Ma'am.' Or Mrs. Carlisle."
Charlize stared at me, shaking uncontrollably, as if looking at a demon in human flesh.
"Second," my voice dropped an octave, each word a shard of glass. "You can flaunt what you've stolen. You can play with Julian's little egos all you want. But if you ever mention my mother again-or lay your filthy hands on her things-I will personally dissect every nerve in your body while you're still awake to feel it."
I leaned back, giving her a small, terrifying smile. "Enjoy your stolen wedding, little sister. Poisonous gifts always come with a price."
I released my grip abruptly.
Charlize collapsed onto the hardwood floor like a puppet with its strings cut, clutching her throat, coughing and gasping violently for air.
I looked down at her as if she were dirt on my shoe, calmly adjusting my black silk cuffs.
"Get out," I commanded softly.
She didn't even try to stand up gracefully. She scrambled to her feet on hands and knees and practically threw herself out the door, weeping in sheer panic.
Outside, the maid shrieked in surprise, followed by the frantic, echoing sound of Charlize's high heels fleeing down the marble corridor.
Silence returned to the room.
I walked back to the vanity, picked up my mother's photo, and gently wiped the dust from the scratched glass with a velvet cloth. I placed it carefully into the hidden compartment of my travel bag.
The adjoining door opened, and Penny peeked her head out, her face pale and her lower lip trembling. She had heard everything.
She looked at me-no longer just as her quiet, soft-spoken mistress, but with a profound, awestruck reverence.
ELEONORA POV:
After Charlize fled, a small commotion arose downstairs, but it quickly died down. Clearly, she didn't dare tell anyone what had just happened.
Penny brought me a cup of warm milk and set it carefully beside my hand, her hands trembling.
I took a sip of the milk, the warmth chasing away the chill in my fingertips. I looked at Penny. In this cold, calculating house, she was the only creature who genuinely cared for me.
I needed her complete trust.
"Are you afraid, Penny?" I asked quietly.
Penny paused, then shook her head firmly. "Not of you, Miss. I'm afraid of what they'll do to you."
A small, bitter smile touched my lips. "They've already pushed me off the cliff, Penny. The only choice I have now is where I land."
I pulled her down to sit beside me on the edge of the bed. "Do you know why my father favors Charlize so much?"
"My mother," I began, my voice flat, "came from a wealthy background. It was her fortune and her blood that built Arthur Valencia's mafia network. But after she died, he quickly installed Charlize's mother-a woman with high-ranking political connections. He erased my mother's contributions as if they never existed."
Penny squeezed her eyes shut in horror.
"To my father, everything is a transaction. My mother was. I am. He gave Julian to Charlize because Julian offers visible syndicate power. I have no more value to him, so he is 'recycling' me, selling me off to the Carlisle family to secure a silence agreement."
I took Penny's hand, looking directly into her eyes. "Following me will be dangerous, Penny. The path I'm taking is paved with thorns and blood. You can leave now. I'll give you enough money to live comfortably."
Tears streamed down Penny's face, but she shook her head fiercely. "Miss, you pulled me off the streets when I was starving. Where you go, I go!"
Warmth spread through my chest.
The cowardly, weak version of me from the past could never have protected her from the monsters in this house. But now, after surviving two distinct lifetimes, I had returned with the strength, authority, and power to shield those who were loyal to me-and destroy anyone who dared to harm us.
Yes, two lives in one soul.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, watching Penny wipe her tears.
Seven days ago, I was still a fool-blinded by a desperate, pathetic love for Julian Carlisle. I had believed his sweet lies, believing he truly cared for me. When Arthur brought Julian and Charlize to force me into giving up my rights, it had been the final straw. Overwhelmed by bitterness, despair, and grief, the previous Eleonora had swallowed a lethal dose of poison in this very room.
They thought I was in a coma for seven days.
They didn't know that during those seven days, my soul had been ripped away and cast into another world-a highly advanced civilization.
In that world, I was raised as an orphan, but through sheer intellect and fierce determination, I rose to become "Vesta"-a master of biological science and medical technology. I dedicated my life to saving thousands, mastering cellular medicine to a degree that bordered on the divine, before integrating the V-9 AI system into my consciousness.
When my time in that world came to an end, I opened my eyes expecting death-only to find my soul dragged back into this world, back into my own dying body, exactly seven days after my poison attempt.
The V-9 AI system came back with me. V-9 is a cutting-edge, fully integrated biological AI system.
It integrates a comprehensive global medical database and real-time human physiological monitoring functions. It can seamlessly analyze microscopic tissue structures, pathological toxins, and neural data-providing the most powerful support for my medical precision and the development of advanced technological equipment.
Heaven had handed me a second chance at my own life.
I had been blessed with a doctor's hand and a mind built to heal. I could be a saint to the innocent... but my mercy would never be extended to my enemies.
Those who owed me, those who betrayed my mother, and those who trampled on my dignity-I would drag every last one of them down into hell.
Marrying Damien Carlisle, the broken warlord, was forced upon me by circumstance. But it was also the precise chess move I needed to execute my retribution.
I stood up and walked to my wardrobe, opening a hidden compartment to retrieve my small travel bag.
I took out several items and handed them to Penny: a sleek encrypted communicator, a micro-GPS tracker, and a small aerosol vial.
"Keep this tracker on you at all times," I instructed softly. "And if anyone threatens you, spray this in their face. It will paralyze their nervous system in seconds."
These were simple devices I had crafted using V-9's database and available chemical compounds. Penny accepted them without a single question, securing them into her pockets with absolute trust.
The heavy rumble of a car engine echoed from the courtyard below. My ride had arrived.
I took one last look at the pristine, lifeless bedroom I had occupied for years. I felt zero attachment.
"Let's go, Penny," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. "It's time to meet my husband."
