The Heir and His False Queen

Author: : Burch Minow
Genre: Romance
I was the heir to a tech and real estate empire, living a life most only dreamed of. Yet, I felt a constant ache, a longing for something pure. My father's "Vanguard Program" was supposed to find me a wife, and I was infatuated with Ava Moreau, the ice queen he picked as a frontrunner. I thought she was my future. Then, my world shattered. I overheard Chloe Bishop, one of the Vanguard women, openly mock my "pathetic devotion" and call my near-drowning "staged." Moments later, I witnessed Ava and her supposed "younger brother," Liam, in a passionate embrace, betraying everything I believed. Their intricate scheme began to unravel. Liam faked an injury to frame me. Ava deliberately sabotaged my horse's saddle during a polo match, leaving me bruised and broken. Then, she humiliated me publicly at a charity gala, hijacking an auction and smirking as she gifted my prized item to Liam. The final blow came at my own engagement party: a deepfake video of me, making lewd comments, broadcast to hundreds. The crowd gasped, whispered, judging me. My reputation, my honor, publicly shredded. How could people I nearly married, people embraced by my family, plot such elaborate deceit? Why the constant humiliation, the relentless sabotage, to destroy me? Their betrayal cut deeper than any physical wound. But their arrogance was their downfall. I had secretly installed surveillance. And as the fake tape played, exposing me as a pervert, I pulled out my phone, ready to expose *them* and tear down their web of lies, no matter the cost.

Chapter 1

Ethan Vanderbilt lived a life most only dreamed of, yet he felt a constant, dull ache of something missing. Mid-twenties, heir to a tech and real estate empire, New York City his playground. People saw him as naive, maybe a little entitled. He knew they whispered it. He didn't care much about that. He cared about Ava Moreau.

Ava. She was part of his father's "Vanderbilt Vanguard Program." Arthur Vanderbilt, a man of tradition and power, had handpicked seven young women. Underprivileged backgrounds, some from families with old, forgotten ties to the Vanderbilts. He gave them education, a luxurious wing in their estate, opportunities. The unspoken price: one of them was to marry Ethan, become a partner. Ava was their leader, beautiful, smart, an ice princess. He'd wanted her for years, drawn to her cool distance. She'd insisted her "younger brother," Liam, come too.

The inciting incident, the moment the world tilted, happened on a Tuesday. Ethan, restless from another polite, cool dismissal from Ava, wandered near the Vanguard women's private lounge. He wasn't trying to eavesdrop, not really. But Chloe Bishop's voice, usually dripping with dramatic affection for him, was sharp, mocking.

"His pathetic devotion," Chloe said, a laugh in her voice. "The near-drowning at the Hamptons party? All staged. I wanted him wary, not eager. Can you imagine being stuck with him?"

Ethan froze. Staged?

Another voice, Maya Rodriguez, fiery and protective of Liam. "We all have our tricks. Exaggerate flaws, pretend to hate what he likes. Anything to not be the one chosen."

"As long as one of us gets him," Olivia Chen added, her voice calm, "Liam is secure. That's all that matters."

Liam. Their beloved Liam.

Then, the worst part. He saw them later, Ava and Liam, in the moonlit estate gardens. Not brother and sister. Her hands were on his face, her voice, usually so composed, thick with emotion. "I love you, Liam. Only you. This charade... it's for us."

Liam, charming, innocent Liam, kissed her, a deep, passionate kiss that shattered Ethan's world.

Ethan felt a cold rage build. He needed to talk to his father, now. He found Arthur in his study, surrounded by books and the weight of Vanderbilt history.

"Father," Ethan's voice was tight, "the Vanguard program is over. I'm done."

Arthur looked up, surprised. "Ethan? What is this about?"

"It's a sham. They're all... manipulating. I overheard them. Ava... she's not who we think she is. Liam isn't her brother."

Arthur's face hardened. "Explain."

Ethan told him everything, the staged incidents, their true devotion to Liam, Ava's passionate confession in the garden.

"I want to marry Sophia Hayes," Ethan declared, the words coming out before he'd fully formed the thought. Sophia. Genuine, kind Sophia, who'd liked him for years, even when he was blind to it.

Arthur was silent for a long moment, his eyes searching Ethan's. "Sophia Hayes? The tech billionaire's daughter?"

"Yes. She's real. She cares for me, not for what I can provide for someone else."

Arthur nodded slowly. "This is... unexpected. But your decisiveness, Ethan, I haven't seen it often. If this is your choice, a genuine choice, I support it."

Ethan felt a sliver of relief. "Thank you, Father."

"The Vanguard women... and Liam," Arthur said, his voice turning cold. "They will be dealt with."

Ethan didn't wait. He found the Vanguard women and Liam in their luxurious wing. They looked up, surprised to see him. Ava was there, her composure back in place.

"Your time here is ending," Ethan announced, his voice devoid of emotion. "My father and I are terminating the Vanguard program. Your financial support, your residency, it all ends when I marry Sophia Hayes."

Shock rippled through the room. Chloe gasped. Maya's eyes narrowed. Ava's face remained a perfect, cold mask, but Ethan saw a flicker in her eyes.

Liam, however, looked panicked. Truly panicked. His comfortable life, gone.

Later that evening, as Ethan descended the grand marble staircase of the Vanderbilt mansion, Liam confronted him.

"Ethan, you can't do this!" Liam's voice was high, pleading. "Ava loves you! We all... we all care about you."

"Save it, Liam," Ethan said, disgust lacing his tone. "I know everything."

He tried to push past, but Liam grabbed his arm. "Please, Ethan! Don't ruin everything!"

Ethan pulled his arm away, a sharp, dismissive movement.

Liam stumbled back, his eyes wide. Then, with a theatrical cry, he pitched himself backwards down the marble stairs. He landed in a heap at the bottom, wailing.

"He pushed me! Ethan pushed me!"

Ava and the other Vanguard women rushed from the lounge, their faces a mixture of horror and accusation as they gathered around Liam.

Ava looked up at Ethan, her eyes like ice chips. "How could you?"

Ethan stood speechless, the blatant setup stealing his breath. They wouldn't believe him. He knew it.

Chapter 2

Ethan's mind replayed the scene on the stairs. Liam's feigned fall, the women's instant belief. It was a painful, clear picture of their loyalty. Not to him, never to him. His resolve hardened. Sophia. She was the only way out, the only person who seemed genuine.

He called her the next morning. "Sophia, it's Ethan."

"Ethan! Hi! Is everything okay?" Her voice was warm, concerned.

"Everything's... changing," he said. "I need to see you. Can we meet?"

"Of course. When and where?"

He felt a small measure of peace. She was straightforward, no games.

He met Sophia for lunch. He told her everything. The Vanguard program, the deception, Ava and Liam, his decision.

"I want to marry you, Sophia," he said, the words feeling more right this time. "If you'll have me."

Sophia's eyes widened, then softened. A small smile touched her lips. "Ethan... I've always cared about you. You know that. Are you sure? This isn't just a reaction?"

"I'm sure," he said, meeting her gaze. "I see things clearly now. I see you clearly."

She reached across the table, her hand covering his. "Then yes, Ethan. Yes, I'll marry you."

The news of Ethan's engagement to Sophia Hayes spread like wildfire through their social circles. Arthur Vanderbilt made a brief, formal announcement. Ethan, with his father's backing, sent formal notices to the Vanguard women and Liam. Their stipends would cease in thirty days. They had sixty days to vacate the Vanderbilt estate.

Arthur was grim but supportive. "They abused our trust, Ethan. They abused your affection. This is the consequence."

The grand marble staircase became a place Ethan avoided. But one afternoon, Liam was there again, waiting. This time, his charm was gone, replaced by a desperate, sly look.

"Ethan, we need to talk. Privately."

"There's nothing to talk about, Liam."

"Oh, I think there is," Liam said, his voice low. "About Ava. About what she'll do if you go through with this."

Ethan felt a flash of anger. "Stay away from me, Liam." He moved to walk past.

Liam stepped in front of him, blocking his way. "You don't understand. You're making a mistake."

Ethan shoved him lightly. "Get out of my way." It wasn't a violent push, just enough to move him.

Liam, however, reacted as if he'd been struck. He stumbled dramatically, his eyes wide with feigned fear. "Don't hurt me!" he cried out, just as Ava, Chloe, and Maya rounded the corner.

They saw Liam cowering, Ethan standing over him.

"Ethan!" Ava's voice was sharp. "What are you doing?"

Chloe rushed to Liam's side. "Are you okay, Liam? Did he hurt you?"

Maya glared at Ethan. "You wouldn't dare."

Liam looked up, tears welling in his eyes. "He... he threatened me. He said I had to leave, or else." He pointed a trembling finger at Ethan. "He's angry about the stairs the other day."

Ava's gaze was cold, dismissive. She didn't even look at Ethan for an explanation. She simply helped Liam to his feet, her arm around him protectively.

"Come on, Liam," she said softly. "Let's get you away from him."

Ethan watched them go, a knot of frustration in his stomach. They twisted everything. He was trapped in their narrative.

He remembered a time, years ago, when he'd first met Ava. She had been helping him with a charity project. He'd fumbled some papers, looking clumsy. She'd smiled, a small, almost imperceptible smile, and helped him gather them. He'd thought it was a sign of warmth, of connection. Now, he wondered if even that had been a calculated move.
