The Guardian Angel's Comeback

Author: : Lu Meng
Genre: Fantasy
My quiet life in the sprawling Hawthorne estate was a secret dedication, for I was their Guardian Angel, my well-being intertwined with their immense fortune. A scholarship student, I focused on my books, a delicate porcelain dove on my desk, a silent reminder of my crucial, hidden role. This peaceful existence shattered when Brooke Ashley, my cousin Ethan's jealous fiancée, burst in, leveling wild accusations of grants "stolen" and spells "whispered." Her rage culminated as she deliberately smashed my heirloom porcelain dove, its sharp fragments gashing my forehead. The attack spiraled into a nightmare: Brooke and her friends disfigured my face with a letter opener, ripped my clothes, and even tried to brand me with a hot lighter, while the family butler betrayed me, diminishing my sacred status to save himself. When Ethan's father, Marcus Sr., arrived, instead of salvation, he saw only scandal, and pressed a thick pillow over my face, attempting to suffocate me. As I struggled for breath, the realization hit me: the very family whose prosperity I safeguarded was willing to commit murder to bury their cruel secret, sacrificing their own destiny just to silence me. How could they, knowing the ancient pact, extinguish the source of their own success with such monstrous indifference? In my final moments of darkness, the door burst open, and my childhood friend, Liam Hawthorne, my true protector, pulled me back from the brink of oblivion, promising a new beginning and a devastating reckoning for those who dared to defy fate.

Introduction

My quiet life in the sprawling Hawthorne estate was a secret dedication, for I was their Guardian Angel, my well-being intertwined with their immense fortune.

A scholarship student, I focused on my books, a delicate porcelain dove on my desk, a silent reminder of my crucial, hidden role.

This peaceful existence shattered when Brooke Ashley, my cousin Ethan's jealous fiancée, burst in, leveling wild accusations of grants "stolen" and spells "whispered."

Her rage culminated as she deliberately smashed my heirloom porcelain dove, its sharp fragments gashing my forehead.

Chapter 1

Ava Prescott lived in The Dovecote, a quiet wing of the sprawling Hawthorne estate.

It was her home, her sanctuary.

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air.

She was reviewing notes for her university classes, a scholarship award letter tucked neatly into her textbook.

A small, porcelain dove, an heirloom, sat on her desk, a silent reminder of a duty she barely understood but always honored.

The peace shattered.

The door to The Dovecote burst open, slamming against the wall.

Brooke Ashley stood there, flanked by two of her friends.

Brooke' s face was a mask of fury.

"There you are," Brooke spat, her voice sharp.

Ava stood slowly, her heart starting to pound. "Brooke? What' s wrong?"

"What' s wrong?" Brooke laughed, a harsh, ugly sound. "You got the grant, didn' t you? The one I was supposed to get."

Her friends smirked behind her.

Ava said nothing. The grant was a surprise, a validation of her hard work.

"And don' t think I don' t see what you' re doing with Ethan," Brooke continued, advancing into the room. "Trying to turn him against me, whispering your little spells."

"I haven' t done anything of the sort," Ava said, her voice quiet but firm. "Ethan asked me to speak to his father about you, that' s all."

Brooke' s eyes narrowed. "Liar."

She lunged forward.

Her hand swept across Ava' s desk, sending papers and books flying.

Then, her fingers closed around the porcelain dove.

"This stupid thing," Brooke sneered. "You think this makes you special?"

Before Ava could react, Brooke raised the dove high and brought it down, hard, across Ava' s forehead.

Pain exploded behind Ava' s eyes.

She stumbled back, her hand flying to her head.

Warm blood trickled through her fingers.

The porcelain dove lay shattered on the floor.

A cold dread washed over Ava, deeper than the pain.

The Hawthorne Dove. Broken.

Her well-being, her happiness, was tied to the Hawthorne family' s fortune.

This wasn' t just an assault; it was a terrible omen.

If she suffered, they suffered.

Brooke Ashley had no idea what she had just done.

Chapter 2

The pact was ancient, a whisper through generations.

Ava' s ancestor, a woman of quiet strength, had found the first Hawthorne patriarch broken, his fortunes ruined.

She nursed him, guided him, her unwavering belief a balm to his despair.

When his empire rose again, he made a vow.

His family' s success, their very existence, would be forever linked to the well-being of her descendants.

They were the "Guardian Angels."

Ava was the current one.

Marcus Hawthorne Sr., Ethan' s father, had once scoffed at the legend.

Years ago, he tried to diminish Ava' s role, to move her from The Dovecote, to treat her as just another distant relative.

The consequences were swift and brutal.

Hawthorne Global' s stock plummeted in a catastrophic crash.

Ethan, young and reckless then, suffered a polo accident. He was thrown from his horse, his body broken.

Doctors said it was a miracle he survived.

Marcus Sr., terrified, had reversed his actions immediately.

Ava was restored to The Dovecote, her every need attended to, her symbolic importance reaffirmed.

He never questioned the pact again, at least not openly.

Now, in The Dovecote, the staff who had rushed in at the sound of the crash gasped.

Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, pressed a handkerchief to Ava' s bleeding forehead.

"Miss Ava! Oh, dear Lord!"

"What happened?" another maid cried, seeing the shattered porcelain.

Brooke Ashley, however, just laughed.

"Oh, please. She' s just a charity case. Ethan told me."

She looked down at Ava, who was now sitting on a chair, dazed.

"You and your 'special status.' It' s all nonsense. Soon, I' ll be the true lady of this manor, and you' ll be out on your ear."

Her friends chimed in, their voices dripping with malice.

"She probably cheated to get that grant," one said.

"Yeah, and she' s always trying to bewitch Ethan," added the other. "He' s too good for her."

Ava felt a surge of anger mix with the pain and fear.

Ethan had come to her for help. He was worried his father wouldn' t approve of Brooke, a new-money socialite.

Ava had agreed to speak to Marcus Sr., to smooth the way.

This was her reward.
