The Game Changer Husband

Author: : San Lingcai
Genre: Romance
My wife, Chloe, once bought me a dream car, declaring it a unique promise, "only for him!" It was our special thing, a testament to our bond, a grand gesture never to be repeated for anyone else. But then, she did it again. For Liam, a mere intern with six months of experience, she bought a luxury sports car, making the same public spectacle. When I tried to articulate the depth of my hurt, her response was a dismissive, "Oh, Ethan, don't be so sensitive. It's just a car." "Just a car" became the mantra of her betrayal. She ignored my feelings, promoted him over seasoned professionals, and showered him with exclusive courtside season tickets, parading him around like a favored pet. He'd smirk, dangling scraps of her generosity my way, while the office buzzed with whispers about their "business retreats" to Napa Valley. The final, disgusting blow was an Instagram photo: her hand, our wedding ring etched with "E+C," resting intimately on his arm – a public declaration of absolute disregard for our marriage and my dignity. The woman who swore an exclusive commitment was now openly flaunting an emotional, possibly physical, affair. How could she so casually shatter sacred promises, our shared history, and my very soul? The public humiliation was suffocating, the injustice burning deep in my chest. A profound brokenness settled within me. She thought she was merely testing me, pushing me to "fight for her." Little did she know, her cruel games only forged a colder, more precise resolve. The quiet husband she dismissed was about to become the architect of her downfall. She made her choices. Now, I would make mine.

Introduction

My wife, Chloe, once bought me a dream car, declaring it a unique promise, "only for him!" It was our special thing, a testament to our bond, a grand gesture never to be repeated for anyone else.

But then, she did it again. For Liam, a mere intern with six months of experience, she bought a luxury sports car, making the same public spectacle. When I tried to articulate the depth of my hurt, her response was a dismissive, "Oh, Ethan, don't be so sensitive. It's just a car."

"Just a car" became the mantra of her betrayal.

Chapter 1

The charity auction was loud, full of the city's elite.

Chloe, my wife, stood near the stage. Liam, our agency's newest intern, was beside her, practically glowing.

He'd closed a small deal, his first. Not much, but Chloe decided it was cause for a spectacle.

The auctioneer presented a bespoke luxury sports car. Bidding started.

Chloe raised her paddle. Again and again.

The price climbed. People stared.

She won. The car was Liam's.

She smiled, grabbed the microphone.

"A rising star deserves a brilliant ride!" she announced.

Liam beamed, preening. He immediately took photos, phone already out, tagging Chloe.

My chest felt tight.

Years ago, at a similar auction, I'd admired a vintage collectible car.

Chloe had bought it for me.

"What my husband wants, he gets," she'd declared to the room. "This is only for him!"

It was our special thing, a promise. A grand gesture never to be repeated for anyone else.

Now, she'd just done it for an intern.

Later, at home, the silence was heavy.

I finally said, "That car for Liam. It was like what you did for me."

Chloe barely looked up from her tablet.

"Oh, Ethan, don't be so sensitive. It's just a car."

Her voice was light, dismissive.

"It was a promise, Chloe."

"A promise about a car? Really? It was good PR for the agency. Liam's motivated now."

She turned back to her screen. The conversation was over for her.

For me, something had just broken.

Chapter 2

The next morning, the gloss of our luxury apartment felt like a mockery.

Chloe was already on calls, her voice sharp and confident, planning her day.

I watched her, a stranger in a familiar form.

"It's just a car." Her words echoed.

I picked up my phone, scrolled to David's number. My older brother.

He was a tech mogul, Silicon Valley royalty, but low-profile. Chloe knew he existed, knew he was successful, but had no idea of his true influence, or how close we were. She thought he was just some quiet nerd.

"Ethan? Everything okay?" David's voice was calm, as always.

"Not really, Dave. Need a favor."

I explained, briefly. Not the emotion, just the facts. The car, the broken promise, the dismissal.

David listened. He didn't offer sympathy, just solutions. That was his way.

"There's that big commercial portfolio your agency is about to land. The Harrison Group deal?"

"Yes. It's a huge commission. Chloe's been working on it for months."

"Consider it redirected," David said. "Thompson Realty will be very pleased."

Thompson was our biggest rival.

A few hours later, Chloe burst into my home office. Her face was pale, then flushed with anger.

"The Harrison deal! It's gone! They pulled out, signed with Thompson! What the hell happened?"

I leaned back in my chair, kept my voice even.

"Just a few million in lost commission, darling."

I looked directly at her.

"Nothing compared to the cost of your 'grand stand' for the intern, right?"

Her mouth opened, then closed. She stared, speechless for a moment.

The shock in her eyes was satisfying. A small, cold part of me registered that.

"You... you did this?" she whispered, disbelief warring with dawning understanding.

"Business is business, Chloe. Sometimes deals fall through. Don't be so sensitive."

I used her own words. They tasted like ash.
