It was so hot.
The woman on the bed felt as though she was in the middle of a desert, lying under the scorching sun.
In Suite 8307, on the top floor of Crowne Hotel.
The thick curtains were drawn, letting in only a sliver of sunlight through the crack.
The man got up to get dressed. After climbing out of bed, he turned his head and looked down at the woman who was sleeping soundly because of exhaustion.
But his mind was still hazy. With blurred vision, he could only vaguely make out the woman's figure, and he couldn't see her face clearly.
He shook his head wryly. He had always been cautious, but last night was different. He didn't know what went wrong. Until now, his vision hadn't cleared up, and he could only see vague, overlapping images.
He frowned, picked up his suit, and took out a checkbook from his pocket.
Each check was worth a million dollars. He walked over to the bed and threw the checkbook at the woman carelessly.
The checkbook smacked her right on the face.
"Here's ten million. Take this and don't show your face in front of me again."
Last night, he had completely lost control of himself...
At the thought of this, his expression darkened.
A rustling sound came from the bed. He knew that the woman had woken up.
"Take a morning-after pill and get out of Ploville. Do anything stupid and you'll regret being born," he added coldly.
Then he turned around and strode out of the suite without looking back.
Candice Blake was awakened by the checkbook hitting her on the face. Still groggy and half-asleep, she peeled her eyes open slowly.
She saw the man leaving. His back was to her. When he slammed the door behind him, she winced slightly.
Picking up the checkbook on the bed, she felt suffocated. The pieces of paper were as light as a feather, but they were as heavy as lead in her hands.
Ten million dollars? What a rich man!
But she didn't want the money.
Yesterday, she was supposed to marry Greyson Harman.
Last night was supposed to be her wedding night.
And this very suite was specially prepared for them by the Harman family.
Yesterday was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.
She had been looking forward to this day for over ten years.
But the groom never showed up.
Instead...
A damned stranger had broken into her suite all of a sudden.
He violated her on her wedding night, insulted her, and he even wanted to send her away with money!
Who the hell did he think he was?
Her throat was bone-dry and she couldn't make a sound. She struggled to sit up, ripped the checks, hoping to throw the shreds at the man's back.
Unfortunately, the man had already left, and he wasn't able to witness this.
Shreds of meaningless paper floated in the air like snowflakes.
Candice wrapped the quilt around her and wanted to get out of bed, but her whole body was so sore that she couldn't move.
She didn't know who that man was, and she had only seen his back just now.
What went wrong last night for her to end up like this?
She remembered waiting for Greyson for a long time. When he never showed up, she wondered if he was downstairs entertaining the guests. After a while, she fell ill. There was something wrong with her body. And then that man...
How? How did this happen?
Gritting her teeth, she tried to pull herself together and was about to get out of bed.
Suddenly, the door to the suite was kicked open.
The next second, all the lights in the bedroom were suddenly turned on, temporarily blinding Candice. She instinctively reached out to shield her eyes from the dazzling lights.
Several people rushed inside the room.
Before Candice could understand what was going on, she heard the shutter of a camera going off in front of her.
Rachel Harman, her mother-in-law, rushed over and slapped her hard in the face.
As if the physical abuse wasn't enough, it was quickly followed by verbal abuses.
"You fucking bitch! How dare you fool around with another man on your wedding night? You have disgraced the whole Harman family!"
Blood seeped from the corner of Candice's mouth.
Rachel got closer to Candice and grabbed her long hair before pulling her out of bed.
Candice's legs were so weak that she fell to the floor.
Her clothes were torn, and she was kicked hysterically by Rachel.
Unable to dodge Rachel's attacks, Candice was hit squarely in the stomach, but she could only grit her teeth to endure the pain.
After all, Rachel was her elder. She had become Rachel's daughter-in-law after her wedding the previous day. She couldn't fight back.
Just then, a man walked in noisily. It was her husband, Greyson.
He looked indifferently at the two of them and did not attempt to stop Rachel at all.
He glanced at Candice with his eyes filled with disgust and suppressed anger. He showed her no signs of mercy and affection.
Candice tried her best to curl up. She pulled a sheet over herself to cover her body under the torn clothes while glaring at him indignantly.
There were others in the room, and she had her pride to protect. On the other hand, Greyson didn't seem to care about her dignity at all.
Meanwhile, Rachel was still angry and wanted to continue slapping her.
Unexpectedly, Candice raised her hand and grabbed Rachel's wrist hard.
Her eyes were fixed sharply on Rachel as she hissed, "That's enough. I can fight back. I just choose not to."
Rachel's wrist was beginning to hurt. She didn't know that Candice could be so strong and she was even a little afraid.
"Bitch, let go of me! You slut! How dare you defy me after doing such a shameless thing? Who the hell were you fooling around with? How dare you cheat on my son on the first day of your marriage!" she screamed hysterically.
Candice pushed herself up from the floor and straightened herself.
She raised her head proudly and was about to shake off Rachel's hand when Greyson suddenly came over, kicking her on the knee.
Her leg wobbled, and she fell heavily, feeling deeply humiliated.
Her forehead hit the corner of the table, and she felt something warm falling down her forehead. It was blood.
Then, Candice felt a sharp pain.
However, no matter how painful it was, it was nothing compared to the heartbreak she was feeling.
Greyson was siding with his mother. He didn't care if Rachel was abusing Candice. He didn't even allow Candice to resist the abuse!
She raised her head and looked at him pathetically.
She wanted to explain but couldn't get her explanations out, seeing the coldness in his eyes.
She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth and finally asked, "Why didn't you come to our room last night?"
Nothing would have happened if he had come.
"I had something to deal with, so I went out," Greyson answered impatiently.
"You went out? Was it because of her?"
He had probably gone to meet Madilyn Reilly, his beloved woman, on his wedding night.
Rachel took the opportunity to spit on her face.
Candice did not have the time to dodge. The spit landing on her cheek made her sick.
She raised her head sharply and glared at Rachel with piercing eyes.
Rachel was fuming mad and scolded, "Madilyn came back yesterday. Why can't Greyson meet her? Why are you so petty? Candice, you have only yourself to blame. You are just a cheap bitch."
"How dare you question me?" Greyson boomed as his expression turned graver. He scoffed and continued, "You cheated on me on our wedding night. Shouldn't you be ashamed of yourself? You are just a bitch without your virginity."
Candice's face turned pale.
Her virginity...
It was the only thing Greyson had ever liked about her.
But now...
She lost her virginity and there was nothing in her that could attract his interest.
Greyson took another brief glance at her and sneered, "You are disgusting."
Greyson's words were like a knife stabbing into Candice's heart.
She could hear the sound of her heart breaking.
No matter how strong she was, Greyson was always the only one who could hurt her.
At that moment, she felt an undeniable distance between the cold-blooded Greyson and herself.
She had never seen him display such a cold expression.
He had a handsome face, but she had never seen him smile, at least not at her.
She felt so sad.
She had loved him for ten years.
Seven years of unrequited love and three years in an official relationship.
In these years, he had never once held her hand.
She had tried so hard to make him fall in love with her in the past three years, but she failed miserably.
She knew that he never wanted this marriage.
The Harman family had been engaged in medical industry for generations. They had owned a pharmaceutical company and a hospital, but when Greyson's father was in charge, he sold the hospital, with only Harman Pharma left. Not to mention it was now surviving by a thread.
Candice's family, on the other hand, ran a successful biological technology company.
She was the apple of her parents' eye.
They knew she was obsessed with Greyson, so her mother promised to give him a precious medicine formula in exchange for the marriage.
Hutton Harman, Greyson's grandfather, was jumping with joy at the proposal and forced Greyson to marry Candice for the interest of the family. Although Greyson had resisted, he had no choice but to compromise in the end. He gave up the woman he loved and agreed to marry Candice.
After all, only when Harman Pharma successfully launched the new drug could the Harman family return to its previous glory.
Unfortunately, Candice's parents died in a car accident, and they only left her a piece of paper with the formula written on it.
She was no longer a lady of a prominent family.
She was worthless in Greyson's eyes, just like the dirt on the floor.
Her misery was obvious at this moment.
She lay prostrate on the floor. Her clear eyes, initially sharp, were now dimmed.
She didn't get a good rest last night and was being tortured today.
Blood dripped from her forehead, landing on the back of her hand.
She felt both physically and mentally hurt. Her whole body ached and felt weak. She was cold and was about to faint. However, she maintained her dignity and didn't want to collapse in front of the mother and son.
The tension was growing in the room.
Finally, she glanced at Greyson and said with a sad smile, "Greyson, let's divorce."
She didn't want to lose the only thing she had left, her dignity.
At the courthouse.
Greyson signed the divorce decree without any hesitation.
Candice felt dejected. She couldn't believe he really signed it...
However, she knew that he wanted this.
He never had the intention to marry her.
Greyson said coldly, "What you did is disgraceful. Before the new drug is launched next year, we will keep the divorce a secret. Your mother's formula has been handed over to the research department. You will get 20% of the benefits."
Candice smiled forcefully and said, "If I can prove my innocence, you must return me the patent right to the new drug."
Just then, she saw a frown flash across Greyson's face and said coldly, "What's wrong? You don't dare to agree? Were you the one who schemed against me last night? Maybe you have never wanted to marry me. You and your family put on a show just to get the formula. Am I right?"
She had trusted him wholeheartedly. When he finally held her hand at the wedding yesterday, she felt so happy that she handed him the formula with no questions asked.
Greyson felt insulted and promised, "Fine. I agree. But, if you do something disgraceful again and embarrass the Harman family, the patent will belong to me. Also, you won't be getting a single penny."
"Sure."
Candice signed her name on the divorce decree with a heavy heart.
They had gotten married yesterday and were already divorced the next day.
It was so ridiculous.
