Chapter 1 No one knows her worth

ISABELLA

The whole pack gathered for the shifting ceremony. Though everyone was happy and excited about the ceremony, I was nervous because I didn't know what to expect.

Just as the event started, I felt the weight of everybody's eyes on me. Some were pointing at me while some were whispering to their neighbors while looking at me.

This time, I didn't just feel nervous, I felt like the outcast they have made me to be in the pack.

Just as expected, the transformation began. My packmates transformed into their wolf forms in smooth and powerful ways but nothing different happened to me.

Despite my clenched fists and zealous will, I still remained as I was without any form of transformation.

In the midst of the howls and cheers, I stood like a lone and inadequate wolf. Meanwhile, the murmurs of disbelief around me were enough to send me to my grave.

I got the worst embarrassment that moment when someone shouted "failed shift" and spat.

"Witch," another person whispered.

The accusation was very heavy that I felt like disappearing but I had no other option but to stand and endure all of them.

"Why is mine different? Why am I not undergoing transformation like my packmates? Does it mean that I don't have a wolf?" I asked myself all these before running to where I hid my clothes to escape from the humiliation, shame, and ridicule.

I reached for my garments only to find Nadia scornfully looking at it.

"Looking for these?" Nadia asked with malice and contempt as her eyes gleamed with triumph.

Seeing Nadia fling my garments in the air sent fear and anger to me but I respectfully asked her to return them to me but she refused.

"Give them back to me, Nadia. This is not right."

She bursted into laughter as she said, "You don't deserve them. Maybe you will fit in better with the animals now."

Tears blurred my face as Nadia walked away leaving me in darkness without any cloth. I felt the pain heavier when I remember that I have no one to speak or fight for me.

Somehow, I was able to gather courage and marched majestically towards the heart of the ack territory.

I got to the alpha's den, knocked, and Nadia's father, a formidable figure, opened the door while regarding me with contempt.

"Isabella, right?" He asked with his voice already revealing disapproval.

"Why do you appear this way?" He asked.

"I-I-I didn't shift, but I have come to complain about something Nadia did to me. She took my clothes and insulted me," I stammered.

I was expecting him to do something or assure me that he will scold Nadia about it but to my greatest surprise, he made a statement that cut deep into my heart.

"You are a failure and a complainer. Perhaps you are more trouble than you are worth."

As he dismissed me, I left with shame and tears as I felt the pain of isolation in the midst of everyone.

Just as days turned into weeks, I relentlessly died in silence. The once friendly faces turned away from me and my presence seemed contagious to them now.

"That which was once part of the Eclipse pack is now living like an outsider in the midst of my people, " I thought to myself.

As I was walking past the forest one fateful day, I stumbled into Nadia who was wearing a malicious face with a group of pack members who were once friendly to me.

Surprisingly, a mocking laughter erupted from them as they circled me like a predator closing in on its prey. "Look who we have here-the lone wolf who was not able to shift. So pathetic."

It hurts me so deeply that these were coming from them but I remained silent because I was not ready to give Nadia the satisfaction of a reaction.

"What does it feel like to be an outcast? " Nadia mocks me. "Apparently, no pack wants a failure like you."

The words cut through me like a knife and I felt tears finding their way down my cheek. Just then, my mind flashed back to my futile attempt to seek intervention from Nadia's father, and the rejection hurt me the more intensifying the bitterness of my current predicament.

Undeterred Nadia continued her verbal abuse to show that she has power over me in the pack.

"So, you thought reporting me to my father would change anything? You are nothing but a burden, Isabella. No one cares about you. Not even your dead parents."

The pack members she came with supported her as they nodded in agreement to Nadia's hateful remark.

When Nadia and her entourage departed, I left for my house-the only place I feel loved and accepted. I was happy that finally I am going to rest but no, Nadia still wants to steal the little peace I enjoy here.

I returned home after crying my eyes out in the solitude of the forest only to see another unexpected scene-all of my property was scattered and overturned like fallen leaves. It was an intrusion into my little home.

Having seen all that has happened, I began to panic the moment I noticed Nadia sitting calmly while playing with her lips.

"Welldone Isabella. What an old-fashioned house you have here," she said.

With anger and disbelief I asked, "What are you doing here, Nadia? This is my home!"

She chuckled instead. "Oh, dear Isabella, I thought we could have a little chat. You know, heart-to-heart."

"Get out! You don't have any right to be here," I said but she laughed.

"You really think you can tell me what to do? After all, I am climbing the ranks in the pack, and soon, I will make your life a living hell. Your tears today were just the beginning," she said.

With fear I asked, "Why are you doing this? What did I ever do to you?"

"You are in my way, Isabella. I deserve more respect and recognition in this pack, and you are standing in my way. I will make sure you regret ever crossing me," she voiced out in anger.

Tears flowed smoothly again as the place I had sought refuge has become a battlefield. But as I stood there, I somehow gained confidence to confront Nadia. "You can try, Nadia, but I won't let you break me. This is my home, and you won't take away the little peace I have left."

Surprisingly, Nadia left my home but returned immediately with three strong men whom I suspect would have been outside awaiting her instructions.

"Beat her up," she instructed them.

"Nadia, please don't do this to me. I can't remember doing anything to you." I pleaded, only to receive a hard blow across my face that pushed me to the ground.

"Certainly, you can't remember doing anything to me, you fool. You had the effrontery to report me to my father and think you will go scot-free? Never!" She stated.

I changed, "I am sorry," several times but did not get any response from her. Instead, she instructed the three men to beat me up more.

I had no option but to endure the pains I received from the beating silently because there was no one to cry or run to.

When they left, I looked at the mess Nadia made in my home and tears were the only things that could escape from my eyes.

After the incident, even fellow Omega's started avoiding me even more because who dares challenge the popular Nadia?

It's true that loneliness was consuming me but in it I found the determination to endure and rise above the ruins of my home.

Something happened during the communal hunting expedition. My fellow Omega distanced themselves from me, leaving me to wander in the forest alone.

As I went deeper into the forest, my fellow pack members communicated through glances and gestures in an attempt to deliberately exclude me from the whole experience.

"Well, here comes the failure herself," said Lyra, an omega who was once friendly to me.

In my attempt to ignore the betrayal, I asked her, "What do you want, Lyra?"

Her mocking laughter was so loud that I wished she could reduce it but no, who am I? A powerless omega who could not shift?

Lyra continued without any form of sympathy. "Words travel fast, Isabella. Your little home is in shambles. I don't even know what Nadia found there."

At this point, I was already burning in anger but I refused to let it consume me. "It's none of your business. If you have anything to say, say it."

Lyra stepped forward with her eyes reflecting a newfound malice and hatred. "You are a stain on this pack, Isabella. You are nothing but a burden we all have to bear.

However, you are more likely to scare off Rey than catch it. Perhaps you should just stick to the things you are good at-like being a burden to everyone.

As I turned away from Lyra, I quickly remembered the battles I have faced not just in the hands of Nadia but also in the hands of everyone in the pack. The pain was much but I had to endure it because I am alone.

"Why must it be like this?" I asked no one in particular out of frustration.

"Will my true mate emerge, or will the pack mock me for that again?

I hope that the discovery of my true mate will help me escape the humiliation and hardship within the pack," I said to myself.

The night of the ceremony arrived and the whole pack was filled with anticipation. The pack members gathered but we're all looking at me.

In their eyes, I could see them eagerly waiting to witness the continuation of my disgrace.

As the Alpha, a towering figure with eyes that embody the wisdom of centuries, presided over the ceremony, there was tension everywhere.

One after the other, everyone's mate was revealed and they all solidified their bonds in joy and happiness. The Omegas all found their mates except me.

I stood alone expecting the worst to happen because it already seemed like I didn't have a mate the same way I was not able to transform into my wolf form.

The whispers and murmurs intensified as I was the only one standing alone waiting for the final blow.

Then, the Alpha's gaze met mine, and he solemnly declared, "In the moon's light, destinies entwine.

The whole pack became silent as the Alpha approached and extended his hand towards me. "Isabella, you are my chosen mate."

I felt a mix of nervousness and hope as his eyes locked onto mine. It was like a secret shared between us and the moon.

There were whispers among the pack members like leaves rustling in the wind. Lyra, who had mocked me earlier, had her jaw wide open. "Wait, what? It's not possible. Isabella is the alpha's mate?" She exclaimed as disbelief was written all over her face.

Everybody was surprised as no one expected what just happened. How could the powerless omega be the Alpha's mate?

I know that they had expected my embarrassment but this twist left them speechless. Now, the forbidden one like me is chosen by the moon goddess to be the Alpha's mate. Oh, my enemies are shocked!

I was still enjoying the disbelief written all over their faces when the alpha shifted from solemn to something akin to surprise.

His gaze became softened as he looked at me as if he was just realizing the weight of his declaration. "Isabella, you are my chosen mate."

That moment, I felt a mixture of emotions -disbelief, relief, and a little bit of happiness. Just then, I noticed that I was not the only one battling with mixed emotions. Everyone else in the pack was battling with it.

Nadia, who had celebrated my misery, was shocked more than anyone else. "But she couldn't even shift properly at the shifting ceremony," she muttered in frustration.

A younger wolf pup tugged at his mother's fur to ask, "does it mean Isabella is going to be out Alpha now?"

"No, darling. It means that she has been chosen by the Moon goddess as a special mate for our alpha," his mother whispered.

"Like a story from the Moon goddess?

Exactly like that.

As the whole pack were all getting prepared to accept the new development, the Alpha looked into my eyes and said, "The Moon goddess has chosen you as my mate but I can't accept you as my mate."

While I was still trying to recover from the alpha's shocking statement, he uttered another one while forcefully pushing me aside.

"Isabella, I reject you."

"As the Alpha, I am expected to make choices that will secure the future of our pack," he said as he continued. Immediately, he shifted his gaze towards Nadia who was very happy about the unexpected turn of event.

It was as though my heart was pierced with a very sharp object when the realization hit me. The Moon goddess' choice did not make things any better but worsened it.

I was brought back to reality the moment I made a very heartbreaking statement. "Nadia, I choose you as my chosen mate," he said.

This time, I wished the ground would open so it could swallow me but no, it's not possible. The jubilation and celebration of victory everywhere as the alpha extended his hand towards Nadia was enough to kill me.

"My life was a mess when she was an omega like me, what will be my fate now she has become the Alpha's chosen mate?" I cried within me.

As Nadia stepped forward while casting a triumphant glance in my direction, I felt the weight of betrayal, not just from the Alpha but from the very celestial forces that had seemed to guide me moments ago.

Nadia, who is now elevated to the status of Alpha's chosen mate now seized the opportunity to magnify my humiliation.

"Hello, Isabella," she said to me as her voice was dripping with scorn. "It seems like fate always has a way of correcting its mistakes. You thought you could escape your pitiful existence, but the Alpha has spoken."

The pack has now shifted their attention from me to Nadia.

Also, the Alpha did his best to avoid his eyes meeting with mine as he spoke to Nadia, "May the Moon's light guide us in this new union."

I stood frozen as I watched everyone celebrating Nadia's triumph and my abrupt disappointment.

As the pack celebrated Nadia, I was left with a mix of emotions - betrayal, humiliation, and an overwhelming sense of abandonment.

The Alpha now bonded with Nadia and left me to face the pack's judgement alone.

.

Just then, Nadia, who is very happy about the twist of events, approached me with a fake smile. "It looks like you are not the chosen one after all, Isabella. How does it feel to be cast aside like a worthless fellow?"

The pain these words inflicted in me cannot be explained but I refused to let her see the pain. It's true that the alpha's decision hurt me but I will not allow it to define my worth. I straightened my shoulders and was determined to face Nadia regardless.

As days passed by, I sought solace in myself.

"Beta Caius wants to see you right away," said one of the servants.

"Why? What does he need?" I asked.

""Who gave you the right to question me? Do I look like someone as useless as you?" He said with anger.

I hurried to Beta Caius' place and he gave me a task meant for three persons to perform.

Though it was a tough job, I had to do it because complaining wouldn't help and besides, no one cared.

It took me four days to complete the task and on the fifth day, I went to give him a report about the task.

As I made my way to his place that fateful day, eager to report the completion of the task he assigned to me, my heart was filled with rejection, but duty still called, and I aimed to prove my worth to everyone in the pack.

As I approached Beta Caius' place, I heard whispers. I hesitated to believe what my instincts were telling me because the bond between Beta Caius and Alpha Damon has always been the one of trust.

I stepped into the place and my eyes widened at the scene before me. Beta Caius, Alpha's supposed best friend, and Nadia, the one the Alpha chose over me, were found having intimacy.

I was shocked and marveled at the same time as I witnessed a betrayal that hurt deeper than rejection. My breath got caught in my throat and the words I had planned to speak to Beta Caius were forgotten.

Nadia, the wolf in sheep's clothing, has been wearing a deceitful mask that had fooled not just me but the Alpha himself.

As I stood there, my mind struggled to comprehend what was happening before me as the weight of the revelation threatened to crush my spirit.

At this point, tears blurred my vision as I stepped backward with my heart shattering into pieces. The betrayal was so deep and heartbreaking that even the Moon above seemed to dim.

Beta Caius was the first to notice my presence and his eyes widened with guilt. "Isabella, it's not what it looks like," he stammered as he tried to justify the betrayal.

Nadia on her own was not bothered as she moaned in satisfaction. "Anyways, see who stumbled upon our little secret. What does it feel like to be betrayed by those you trusted, foolish Isabella?"

"No matter what you have seen here today, just know that I am not bothered because I cannot be disturbed because of a powerless and rejected Omega like you," she said before going back to her position.

This time, the pain I felt was overwhelming as I battled with a storm of emotions within me. I had to turn away immediately as I could not bear the sight of the deception anymore.

As I moved backward, the whole scene came refreshing in my memory as I could feel the deceit all over the place. I felt for the Alpha not just because I was once in love with him but because this kind of betrayal is unbearable and shameful at the same time.

In as much as he chose Isabella over me, he doesn't deserve this kind of betrayal from his supposed chosen mate.

In the midst of the betrayal, I found a new kind of strength. I was determined to rise above the wolves who wore the masks of friendship and loyalty but yet stab you behind.

I vowed to find my way through the shadows and be stronger so as not to be defined by the rejection that had marked my path.

With tears in my eyes, I turned back to face Nadia with my voice steady despite the whole situation.

"The Alpha must hear this," I declared and left for the Alpha's place immediately.
