Kylie's POV
"What the hell?!" My eyes opened and widened. The glass of wine in my hand fell on the ground.
For a moment, it felt like I was hallucinating. I gently rubbed my eyes, trying to get a clearer vision, but that was my reality.
"Austin Nitaile announced his marriage with Emily L." I re-read the content on the television screen.
Emily. L. The name sounded very familiar. He said a lot about her and how they ended things for a very long time. I didn't want to believe he would ever cheat on me, not with someone who left him when at his lowest.
"This is not possible; there must be a mix-up somewhere," I murmured under my breath as I rushed up the stairs. I grabbed my phone, calling my husband, Austin Nitaile.
"Pick up the damn phone!" I whined. My hands are shaking.
I flipped it on the couch, pacing around back and forth in the living room, biting my nails.
"Ding," the sound of the doorbell made me halted.
"Austin!" I called out. My heart pounding so loud, I held my hands tightly behind me.
He gently walked inside not uttering a word to me. I walked behind him, contemplating if I should talk about the recent news or not. He halted in front of the television; the information was still ongoing on the channel, considering it was the hot gist of the day.
"Can you imagine? Bloggers and fake news," I spoke. That was the only way I could ask without making him feel offended. I didn't want to be a wife who doubted her husband's loyalty. I mean, Austin is a very famous person, and only a few people knew we were married; it is only normal if rumors of him being married to his Ex are still flying up everywhere. I knew it was disrespectful, but that was the only way i could keep my marriage.
"It's not fake," he murmured out.
"What?!" I exclaimed. It was like I was hearing things in my ear.
"I want a divorce" he confirmed, his voice came out dead.
The word divorce sent a wave of fear into me. My whole body became weak, my hands shaking profusely.
"A divorce?!" My voice came out brittle, water surrounded my eyes.
The atmosphere became so quiet that even the sound of a pin drop could be heard. He gently turned, staring deep into my eyes.
"Why?-" my lips trembled.
"Why?! Aren't you tired of this bondage called marriage? Things are not working out!" He threw the bomb at my face.
Two years into our marriage was when the change happened. He suddenly became a nightcrawler. He stopped sending gifts on special occasions like my birthday. I didn't let all of that get to me as I continued to be a good wife to my husband.
"We can talk about that" I stretched my hand "I mean-
He flipped my hand away while I tried to hold him. "There is nothing to talk about. I have thought about it and I wondered why I got married to you in the first place. I mean, look at you." he pointed his hand at me from head to toe. "What exactly do you have to offer in this marriage? You just sit at home all day cooking while powerful women are out there achieving greater things. I deserve better!"
His words were like a knife pierced through my broken heart. Tears streaming down my eyes.
" Austin!" I yelled and took a deep, sharp breath. "Please.." I said in a calm voice and continued "Let not go through this root, whatever it is that I might have done, I am sorry. If it is about me not working, I will get another job"
"Nothing can be done about it. I have made my decision, and not even you can change my mind," he responded flatly.
I took a step backward. The fact that he said all of that staring into my eyes, not even my tears could stop him. There was more to what was happening.
"Is it because of her? Because of that parasite?!" I covered the gaps between us.
" Don't you dare call her names!" he scolded, taking sides of his Mistress against his wife.
"Since when has this been going on?" It took me a few moments before I could finally ask the right question. It took me time to realize the scum had been cheating on me.
" Does that matter?" "My lawyers will send the divorce papers across to you," he said. His eyes were crystal clear, with not even a bit of remorse in them.
I chuckled and bit my lower lips. Anger boiling through my veins. I felt like grabbing him by his shirt, I felt like using my fingers on his pretty face. Four years of my life, four freaking years of loving and living my life according to his policy and betrayal was what I ended up with?!.
"Yes. It does matter," I answered, containing in my anger. "Is this the reason why you never let our marriage out in the public?" I held my hands together very tightly. This time, I was so close up to him that I could hear the sound of his breath.
He laughed. " You think you are worth the woman to be seen with me?!"
"What-" I trembled, blinking my eyes. His words broke me again; at this point, I couldn't stop the tears from gushing out.
" I got better things to handle." He pushed me so hard, making me fall on the ground.
There is nothing that hurts more than seeing the person whom I have loved all my life change within the Twink of an eye. He didn't just cheat; he also doesn't care about me anymore. He didn't glimpse at me as he walked out of the house.
" Kylie!" the door opened. "Did he do this to you?!" Mia asked as she rushed towards me "How dare him?" She turned and took a step.
I held her by the leg. Mia never liked Austin; she has always wanted me to divorce his sorry ass but I never listened to her.
"I am so sorry" she wrapped her arms around me. I placed my head on her arm, crying and sobbing.
"You are leaving his worthless ass" I gently glanced at Mia as she continued "Yes, right now!" "I will go park your things" she added and walked up the stairs.
At this point, I decided to let things go. It is okay to start over again; it is never the end of the world.
"Ding" the sound of the doorbell brought me back to reality. I sighed and walked to get the door.
" Who- word got stuck in my mouth as I opened the door. In front of me were two men dressed in black uniforms and a black belt around their waist.
"Mrs Amelia Natalie, you are under arrest!"
Kylie's POV
"What are you talking about?!" Mia's voice came from behind. I gently glanced at her wondering the same thing she said.
"You have got the wrong person," I finally responded.
"Are you Mrs Amelia Natalie?"
"Yes, maybe not anymore."I stared at the officer whose face seemed not friendly.
Mia dragged me behind, standing between myself and the police officers.
"No way!" She spread her hands widely, not giving way to any of the officers.
I hid behind her; fear crept up my veins, wondering exactly what was happening.
"Get out of the way!" The other officers, who hadn't said a word since their arrival, pushed Mia, making her fall to the door.
" What are you doing?! You- He folded my hand behind.
"Let go of me!" I continued to struggle with my hand. His grip was too tight; which hurt in my wrist.
"Mrs Amelia Natalie, You are under arrest for theft and piracy!" He stated and then handcuffed my hand from behind.
" Thief?!" My eyes opened and widened.
" You have every right to be quiet; anything you say or do will be used against you in the courtroom," The other officers added.
Words got stuck in my mouth as I was forcefully dragged outside the house where their van was parked. Nothing, Absolutely Nothing was making sense anymore. I couldn't comprehend my head around how I suddenly moved from a woman whose husband served divorce papers on their wedding anniversary to a thief.
"You will have to take me along!" Mia yelled at the top of her lungs, her veins popping out.
" I am fine; I am sure it was a mixup on their path. Pack up all my things; I will be back soon," I assured her and then smiled a bit. She gently nodded her head and smiled upside down.
I rested my head on the van throughout the drive. I didn't pay attention to any of the officers talking. I just wanted to get to the end of whatever that was happening.
"We have got the thief!" The van door was opened by an officer. He tugged me outside, making me fall to the ground.
"Ouch- my lips pursed with my head handling low, tears filled the corner of my eyes. With every force in me, I got up on my feet.
"Pia" the sound of my sleek dress tore. I glanced at it and then walked inside.
"Police are our friends, but you have me arrested here for close to an hour without a single proof to your claim." I raised my head.
I kept track of time since the moment I arrived. I watched as people trope in and out of custody without proper knowledge of why I was arrested. I was ignored like some abandoned luggage, and It was beginning to get on my very last nerve.
" Yes, the police are your friends, not a common thief like you," a female officer finally responded. She dragged the chair and sat across the table.
" You own this, right?" she slammed a couple of pieces of paper on the table.
"How did this- I moved my hand around them, it was my artwork and a receipt that carries my name on it.
"Now check this" another artwork on the table. The same thing. Drawing was something I developed right from when I was a kid. As much as I could remember, it was something I loved doing. Growing up, it became something I did in my darkest moments. It Elevates my mood, making me express myself better.
"You chose to cheaply sell out someone else's hard work instead of getting a job?! You are a total disgrace"
"No, I didn't do this." My lips trembled. "Someone is trying to frame me"
"What a lame thing to say" she laughed.
I clutched onto the artwork, my hand shaking. It was something I drew from the original craft. It was supposed to be in my room; how it got there, I do not know. Not just that, but with a receipt that indicates I sold it out!
Thank you for your hard work," a familiar voice pierced into my thoughts, bringing me into reality. I glanced in the direction; it was Austin, my soon-to-be ex-husband. Beside him was a Lady whose beauty seemed out of this world, the same one I saw on the television screen. No doubt, I knew it was Emily.
"Pa!" Her hand landed so hard on my face. "How dare you! How dare you sell pirated art to me?!" She sneered.
I placed my hand on my cheek "Do I know- word got stuck in my mouth. I chuckled and finally realized the whole thing that was happening.
My husband planned with his Mistress to sell my artwork, knowing fully well it was not the original piece, just to have me behind bars.
"How low can you be?" my eyes Squinting. At this point, I just knew it, he never loved me. I have been a fool throughout all these years.
" To the point where I don't have to see you anymore!" He whispered in my ear. My eyes popped out. I gently turned it, our eyes became four and he smiled.
"F**k you!" Mia punched him in the face, causing the officers to rush after her. He gently raised his head, blood at the tips of his lips.
I glimpsed at Mia; her hands were handcuffed to the table. She raised her shoulder and smiled widely; I could see the satisfaction in the corner of her eyes.
"Babe! Are you okay?" Emily asked, caressing Austin's face. Acting all loving dovey.
"It's fine; I can handle them," Austin responded. She glanced at Mia with so much anger on her face that Mia gently toughed out at her.
"I don't want this out on the news." Austin walked towards the officer and continued, "You can let her go." he glanced at Mia.
"Lock her up till further notice," He added, pointing at me.
"No- you can do this to me," I stammered.
"Why not? You will rot in jail forever! Nobody will come looking for you!" "officer, take her away"
"No, you have to take me with her." Mia slammed her hand on the table. An officer's hand came across and landed so hard on her face. I ground my teeth so hard that my face became red.
"I will f**ck*ng make you pay!" I yelled, "You messed with the wrong person!"
"You can do shit, who do you think you are? A nobody I picked up from the gutter, that's who you are Kylie" "Take her out of my sight"
A police officer held my arm and said, "Move it!"
The door was forcefully opened, and a woman in her mid-60s walked in. The atmosphere became quiet, two men in uniform of higher rank behind her.
"Get your filthy hands off her" Her fiery voice sent a chill of fear into everybody. The same voice I have lunged for the past four years of my life.
Kylie's POV
It was a long, silent drive to the house. Madam Wilson didn't say a word to me since we left the police custody. I couldn't look her in the face, the shame that I failed after she severally warned me against my decisions was eating me up so badly.
"How did you know?" I murmured out. Looking at my feet like a treasure was kept there.
"Is that supposed to be a question?" The atmosphere went quiet again.
"I can't believe that is who you wasted your past years on," she said and made a sound with her mouth.
Things were still the same way I left; maids showered immediately after we drove in.
Nostalgia was all I felt at that point.
Butterflies fluttered in my belly as I beheld the magnificent structure of our abode. I smiled and breathed in, basking in the scent of the flowers and heaving a sigh of relief.
Welcome miss," the chief maid said to me waiting on what next I'll say. She was looking nice, just like she was when I left. Her neatly ironed uniform sparkling.
"Thank you!" I said.
"Do you need me to get anything for you?" She asked.
"No, I still know my way around. I'll call you if I need anything,"
I bounced on the bed, turning around and smiling widely. The joy I felt within me was something I hadn't had in a while now.
"Knock!" I heard a knock on the door, which made me jot up the bed.
"Hey, big sis," it was my stepbrother, Fred.
After the death of my mother, My dad remarried and I was able to get a loving brother. Fred was everything you could ask for in a brother; he was sweet, caring, and loving.
"Not even a welcome-back hug?" I spread my arm widely and he ran into it like a little child.
"I missed you so much!" he murmured. I smiled gently, patting his back.
"How dare he treat you like this? To think you have been secretly helping him." He glanced at me and continued, "Why do you look surprised? You don't think I know about all you have been doing for him?"
"Well- I stammered not knowing what else to say. Even after Madam Wilson took away every opportunity attached to my name as Wilson's first grandchild, I still used the little power I had left to help Austin.
"That isn't a secret anymore. Madam Wilson knows that you have been helping him using Lady O"
"Dinner in 10 minutes" he patted me on my shoulder and slammed the door behind himself.
***********************
I got down the stairs and Fred was the only person who was already at the table. I gently moved my eyes, staring at the different varieties prepared by the chef.
"I asked Nana to make your favorites" she patted me on my shoulder. That was the first thing she said ever since we had arrived. I smiled warmly and dug into it.
We were having roast chicken with herb butter. The butlers did a great job with the dish. I could feel the butter melting in my mouth as I chewed
"Look who will have here? The prodigal child finally returned." I heard a familiar voice; it was Rachel, my stepmother.
Rachel never liked me, and she made it very obvious. She tries so much to make the house a living hell after the death of my father but Madam Wilson never gave that chance.
I raised my head with a smile on my face. "Yeah, how have you been?" I asked, trying to act polite.
"Why bother to come back? It was peaceful without you" she scoffed.
"Pa!" It was the sound of the spoon slamming on the table. Madam Wilson gave her a deadly stare and went back to eating.
The atmosphere became so quiet that the sound of the pins could be heard falling, and we all went back to eating.
" Kylie is resuming as the CEO on Monday," Madam Wilson's voice finally broke into the air.
Nobody expected such announcements. The water in my mouth got stuck; I glanced at Madam Wilson, whose face was emotionless, and then at Fred, who smiled at me.
I gently gulped down the water in my throat and then dropped the water glass on the table.
"This isn't right, she just returned after so many years," My stepmother interjected.
The sound of Madam Wilson's spoon softly clinked with the plate. She raised her eyes, looking at Rachel "Do you have a problem with that?"
She couldn't respond as she quickly glanced away.
"I thought as much. Get ready for the appointment party in two days." She walked away.
*********************
The chief maid did my hair and makeup herself. It wasn't necessary, my grandma insisted.
I was used to helping myself, but staying with Austin taught me that.
"You look beautiful, ma'am!" The chief maid said before leaving my room.
I walked over to the mirror, I did look beautiful in the dress Madam Wilson picked for me. She still had her touch.
The lights radiated like balls of fire, and the hall's arrangement was electric. It felt like stepping into a mini world of wonders and excitement.
Most of the company partners, shareholders, and notable personalities were present
"What are you doing here?"
I halted at the familiar voice. I glanced behind, it was Austin and his little princess.
"Hello, Ex-husband," I waved my hand.
"You haven't answered the questions. Do you know the Wilson family?! And why did Madam Wilson show up at the custody?" He rushed me with so many questions. I guess curiosity was eating him up.
"No way.." Emily said and continued. "she can't be related to the Wilson family; maybe her wretched self works as a maid in the Wilson mansion. I know people like her." She placed her hand on Austin's shoulder and then smiled.
"Austin," I called out, and I folded my arm. "Why should I answer your question? Isn't this information meant for Close relations? If you are so interested in my life then find out for yourself! Do not forget your place." he blinked his eyes severally. I could swear he didn't believe I could talk down at him that way.
"Let's welcome the new CEO of Butane Company; let's welcome Miss Kylie Wilson," the voice of the anchor finally answered his question.
Austin opened his eyes widened. Murmuring filled the whole room as they all wondered who I was. The reporters were confused and wondering where exactly their camera should focused
"Is- that true?" He stammered.
I Ignored his question and I took a few steps forward. Something stuck in my head, making me turn behind.
"You know what, I have something to return to you, Emily"
"Hun? What do -
My hand landed so hard on her face, leaving a fingerprint on it.
" What!! Austin! Are you just going to stand there and watch?" I heard her say as I walked into the world where I deserved.
