The Day I Came Back to Life

The coppery taste of blood filled my mouth, each breath a searing pain. Ryan Todd' s rage-contorted face was inches from mine, his spittle hitting my cheek as he screamed, "This is for Ashley! You owe us!" His fist connected with my ribs again, and a sickening crack echoed through the co-working space. The social media mob, whipped up by his sister Karen, cheered him on as they dragged me from my desk, beating me to death. My crime? Lending Karen my Lucid Air, which then became a death trap for her daughter, Ashley, in a multi-car pile-up on the I-35. Karen, a master of twisting reality, claimed I' d sabotaged my own car, jealous of Ashley' s athletic scholarship. It was a lie so absurd it became believable to the grief-stricken and the gullible. The final blow sent me sprawling, my head hitting the polished concrete floor with a dull thud, and darkness swallowed me. I had been hunted, blamed, destroyed, and murdered for a crime I didn' t commit, a tragedy built on a lie. Then, I gasped, sitting bolt upright in my bed, my heart hammering but my ribs unbroken. My phone buzzed on the nightstand: Good luck with your neighbor today! My blood ran cold. It was the morning Karen Todd would ask to borrow my car. I wasn' t dead. I was back. And this time, not only would the car stay with me, but Karen would pay for what she did.

Introduction

The coppery taste of blood filled my mouth, each breath a searing pain.

Ryan Todd' s rage-contorted face was inches from mine, his spittle hitting my cheek as he screamed, "This is for Ashley! You owe us!"

His fist connected with my ribs again, and a sickening crack echoed through the co-working space.

Chapter 1

The last thing I remembered was the coppery taste of blood filling my mouth.

Ryan Todd' s face, contorted with rage, was inches from mine, his spittle hitting my cheek as he screamed, "This is for Ashley! You owe us!"

His fist connected with my ribs again, and a sickening crack echoed in the sterile, open-plan co-working space. The social media mob his sister Karen had whipped up cheered him on. They had cornered me, dragged me from my desk, and now they were beating me to death.

My crime? Lending Karen my Lucid Air so she could show off at her daughter' s state championship game.

A multi-car pile-up on the I-35. Ashley, dead on impact. And somehow, it was all my fault. Karen, a master of twisting reality, claimed I' d sabotaged the "complicated" electric car, jealous of Ashley' s athletic scholarship. It was a lie so absurd it became believable to the grief-stricken and the gullible.

The final blow sent me sprawling, my head hitting the polished concrete floor with a dull thud. Darkness swallowed me.

Then, light.

I gasped, sitting bolt upright in my bed. My heart hammered against my ribs, but they weren't broken. There was no pain, no blood, no screaming mob. Just the gentle hum of the air conditioner and the soft morning light filtering through the blinds of my Austin apartment.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. A text from my friend: Good luck with your neighbor today! Hope it goes okay.

My blood ran cold. I knew what day it was. It was the morning Karen Todd would walk over and ask to borrow my car. The day it all began.

I wasn' t dead. I was back.

The frantic energy of my first life' s final moments gave way to an icy calm. I got out of bed, my movements deliberate. I walked to the window and looked down at my driveway. There it was, my pristine, stardust-grey Lucid Air, gleaming in the Texas sun. A beautiful, silent machine that had become a coffin and then my death warrant.

Not this time.

My doorbell chimed, a sound that sent a phantom pain shooting through my side. I took a deep, steadying breath and walked to the door, my hand hovering over the intercom panel.

On the screen, Karen Todd stood on my porch, a strained, overly-friendly smile plastered on her face. Her daughter, Ashley, stood a few feet behind her, impatiently tapping on her phone, the picture of arrogant, athletic youth.

"Gabrielle, honey, are you there?" Karen' s voice was syrupy sweet.

I pressed the button. "Hi, Karen. What' s up?"

"I have the biggest favor to ask. You know Ashley' s state championship is today, and our car is just... well, it' s not fit for the occasion. I was hoping, just this once, we could borrow your beautiful car? I want to pull up and make those other booster club moms eat their hearts out."

The words were almost identical to my memory. The casual entitlement, the focus on appearances. It was all happening again.

But this time, I was ready.

Chapter 2

"I' m so sorry, Karen, but I can' t."

The words came out of my mouth, firm and clear, leaving no room for negotiation. I watched her smile falter on the doorbell camera' s screen.

"What? Why not? It' s just for a few hours."

"There' s a critical battery recall on it," I lied smoothly, the excuse already prepared. "The dealership just calle
