Adrian loved sheep and because of this his mother had bought him a small black sheep teddy at a fair. He loved that teddy bear more than anything and carried it with him where ever he went. The little sheep was black and had long black ears and a white strip around it neck. Adrian's family owned a big farm not far from the city. He would often run off to go watch the sheep where they were kept. He always sat by the fence and watched the sheep.
One day Adrian followed his father into the forest without being seen. His father went hunting with his three dogs and when they spotted prey the dogs started running and Luke ran after his dogs. Adrian lost his father in the woods. He called out but no one answered and he became scared and decided to find his way back home. The further little Adrian went the more lost he became and he became even more scared and ontop of that he was hungry too.
He heard screams like that of women and children and Adrian walked closer to the side where the noise came from. He saw a huge a truck standing by the road and many women and children were forced into the truck. They were workers to be sold off. These women were sold to work in rich families and farms and so on. Adrian's little heart felt sad for those poor women and their children. He knew they were workers because he had seen that truck dropping off workers in his family's farm.
A small sad sob brought him back to his senses. There was a small little back hunched over behind Adrian. The small shoulders were shaking as the sobs become faint. Adrian moved to see who was crying there. It was a small worker girl. She wore a small black velvet dress that had a white chest and black shinny buttons. Her dark curls were tied in neat pony tails with white strings. Adrian shook her small shoulder and she shrieked and turned around immediately. Her big light brown eyes were red from crying and they looked very sad.
She reminded Adria of Teddy! She looked like his little black sheep teddy bear. Adrian liked her. She was a live teddy but way prettier than his own teddy. He wanted this teddy too.
"Hi I'm Adrian do you want to be my teddy?" He takes her hand and led her away. "Mommy will bath you and give you food then we can play okay?"
The little worker girl was glad to be taken away from that place she merely nodded away got up and left with the young master. Adrian walked round and round holding the little girls hand until he saw his family's farm and he started running towards it. He told 'Teddy' they were home. His mother was standing outside as if she waiting for someone.
"Adrian baby where have you been I was worried sick? And who is this?" his mother demanded relief washing all over her. She looked at the little girl who had dirt patches all over her.
"This is Teddy mommy I found her by the road. Look doesn't she look like this Teddy?" He lifted his sheep teddy for his mom to compare with the little girl he had brought with him. Mrs Caulfield laughed as she also noticed the uncanny resemblance. She took the little girl aside and noticed something disturbing about her.
"Adrian I'm going to bath little Teddy why don't you run upstairs and go take your own bath baby?" She suggested. "When you're done you and little Teddy van have something delicious to eat. Hmm?"
Adrian ran to his room to take a bath while Mrs. Caulfield took the opportunity to question 'Teddy.
"Hello sweety my name is Tiffany what's your name?" She asked sweetly.
"My name is Jennifer." The little girl replied and looked away shyly.
"Where do you stay Jennifer? Do you want me to-
"No!" tears streamed down her face. Tiffany hugged her.
"Its okay sweety you're safe now. Nobody is going to hurt you here okay?" She assured her. "Come let us get you cleaned up so can have something to eat."
Tiffany took the little girl to her room and undressed her. She had whip wounds all over the ebony little body. Tiffany winced ay the sight. She held the little and put her in the bath and gently wasted all her wounds and dressed up when she was done. She had to dress her in her son's clothes. She tied her hair in bun and together they went downstairs.
Adrian was already there waiting for his food. Tiffany made them sandwiches and poured them juice and her husband got home.
"Honey can we talk upstairs." She quickly led him away. Paul rolled his eyes he knew she was about to ask for a huge favor.
"Who is she and what happened?" He took a seat.
"Her name is Jennifer, Adrian found her in the woods. She probably ran away from the truck. Honey her whole body is covered in wounds. She is being mistreated." Paul's face went red. He hated people who treated others as slaves.
"Who would do something like that to a little girl?" Tiffany put her finger and her mouth to signal him to lower his voice. "You want to take her in?"
"I have to Paul. I'll ask Maggie to help me with her. She's the only one I can trust with this, plus it would be easy to believe she has a child. She's old enough to be married already. I just want to help this little girl." Paul loved how his wife cared for others. To his family race didn't matter they treated people the same.
The little girl and Adrian were busy eating when they came downstairs. She was so pretty and adorable Paul couldn't understand why anyone would abuse a small child like that. They had to figure out a way to register her without attracting any attention. Zachary came downstairs. He was awake from his nap.
The Caulfields were blessed with two sons Adrian and Zach the youngest. Adrian was 6 years old whereas Zach was 4 years. They had tried again hoping to have a girl but they couldn't conceive again. Of course Tiffany was disappointed but had always hoped for a miracle.
They called Margaret to tell her about Jennifer and how they wanted her to take her as her own. Maggie seemed very nervous when they sat her down. She wondered if it had anything to do with an accident from last week.
"Margaret me and Tiff have a very big favor to ask you." They looked at each other as Maggie sighed deeply in relief. "What's wrong Maggie?"
"Mr Caulfield I thought this is about the accident. I'm very sorry-
"Oh don't worry about that it was an accident we know that." Paul cut in. "This morning Adrian found a young girl in the forest we assume she escaped from the 'truck' and she is in bad shape. She has wounds all over her body."
"Oh no!" Maggie exclaimed. "What do you need me to do?"
"We're taking her in but obviously we can't raise her that's where you come in." Paul explained. "If you can tell others she has come from your hometown and she'll be staying with you. We'll take care of her till her wounds heal and then she can stay in the compound with you. We'll provide everything for her of course."
"Yes of course Mr Caulfield. I'll do anything to help. Where is she?" Maggie asked.
Tiffany went to get Jennifer and brought her to Maggie. Maggie was astonished seeing such an adorable little baby girl. She was very young and so cute she wanted to pinch those cute little cheeks.
"What a pretty baby!" Maggie exclaimed. "I'll definitely do it. Let's save this innocent little life."
Tiffany was so touched by Maggie's reaction she felt tears pricking in her eyes. She was glad they shared the feelings towards this little girl. Jennifer stood there smiling.
Paul promised to take care of the Jennifer matter privately and the three of them agreed she looked 3 and half years or so. The girl was pretty shy and didn't talk much. She would mostly nod or shake her head. Adrian enjoyed playing with her because he was a cheerful child who talked a lot. He did the talking for both himself and his little "Teddy'. He would share her Zach now and then but she was his friend and Zach had to know that.
Paul did as promised. He called in a favor with a friend from home affairs and had Jennifer registered as Margaret's daughter. The workers were all young people with no families of their own none of them had children. Having a little girl in the compounds was welcomed by everybody. All the young women loved playing her when Margaret was busy. Little Jennifer was opening up and she would go to the fields to watch the women working when Adrian went to school.
One day she was sitting by the fence watching the workers she saw the little dog was barking behind a tractor and she wanted to save it. Jennifer ran into the field and ran after the little dog. When the workers saw her it was too late the tractor driver had reversed and ran her over. Adrian who was calling Jennifer saw the whole thing.
He stood there immobilized with eyes wide open and tears streaming down the sides of his face. He ran back to the house screaming hysterically and Tiffany came running downstairs when she heard him. He was on the floor crying very hard and when Tiffany tried to find out what happened he became deranged. While she was struggling with Adrian Maggie came in crying helplessly.
Jennifer had been ran over by the tractor and she was not breathing. Tiffany felt like she was hit by a bus. The whole body stopped working. What was happening. She had to pull herself together and help the kids because Paul was in town. She grabbed the car keys and dragged the deranged Adrian with her while the workers brought Jennifer and they rushed to the hospital.
She left strict orders for them to tell Paul what happened and where they were as soon as he came home. Maggie had to attend to Jennifer while Tiffany had to attend to Adrian. The doctors were able to calm him down and gave him a sedative. He fell asleep and Tiffany went to check on Jennifer just as Paul arrived. Jennifer suffered a few broken bones but she was alive. She was awake when Paul and Tiffany went in to see her.
Maggie was sitting next to her bed and chasing with her. Paul and Tiffany were relieved to see her awake and chatting with Maggie. The doctor called Paul aside and he followed him.
"Your son is in a very bad state we might need to keep him for a while. He is still very shaken. He will need to go to therapy I can recommend someone if you'd like." He told Paul.
"Apparently he was there when the accident occurred. Maybe seeing Jennifer might help him?" Paul suggested. "We appreciate your help doc. We'll contact the therapist."
"We'll see how he responds to seeing her and take it from there. Maybe you can chat with him for a bit?" the doctor had a call to take and he walked away.
Paul went into Adrian's room and he was still sleeping. Paul's parents were on the way to visit Adrian in hospital. He wondered how Adrian would be when he woke up. He was worried about him. Tiffany came back to see how he was doing.
"he's still sleeping and the doc says he will need a shrink after this ordeal." Paul said.
"Oh my poor baby." Tiffany ran a hand over Adrian face. "He witnessed something horrible. I think he'll be okay when he finds out Teddy is okay."
Paul's parents got there before Adrian woke up and the doctor told the family Adrian is awake. He just needs to open his eyes. They tried talking g to him and even told him Teddy is okay she is alive. When he finally woke up he was still and wouldn't say anything. When Paul tried telling that Teddy is okay Adrian simply said okay and told them he is never going back to the farm again. He wanted to live with his grandparents away from that farm.
As much as it pained his parents they let him leave and he stayed in the city with his grandparents. Adrian was never the same cheerful little bright boy. He became very distant an didn't make any friends. He was very bright in school and got straight A's but he was cold towards other kids at school especially girls. He never visited the farm again and his parents and Zach visited him often in the city. He forgot all about Teddy and the incident but he knew he couldn't go to the farm again.
Adrian studied and became a neurosurgeon. He was one of the best in his field and put his all in everything he did. His colleagues all respected him but he was always cold towards others especially if they got too friendly with him.
Life at the farm was quiet and content. Teddy loved her growing up in the farm as she was everybody's little sweetheart. After the accident everybody took special care of her till she was healed. Everybody adored her as she was the only girl in the farm. She wanted to learn everything from everybody and she loved to read. She wondered what happened to Adrian but she was too scared to ask.
Zachary had also left to study in university to be a neurosurgeon like Adrian. The Caulfield children were very smart and excelled in their studies. Paul and Tiffany were left with Teddy. She did t want to attend university but they had to force her and she only did a short admin course. Paul had twisted a friend's arm to get her job at his law firm. He was pleased with her work and her honesty but Teddy was still very shy.
The Caulfields were hosting a dinner in their farm and had asked both their kids to attend. Adrian had refused but after hours of begging and nagging from his mother he had finally agreed. He wasn't sure either why he hated the farm. His mind had wiped off the memory of Teddy and that incident. The preparations were going well and Tiffany went to pick her and Teddy's dresses.
She knew Adrian didn't remember Teddy but she was still worried about what would happen if he saw her. Would he remember her or that incident? Tiffany knew she had to hurry to help Teddy get ready. Teddy was hers and Maggie's little girl. But honestly she was Tiffany's child and even the other workers could see how she always fussed over the little girl.
At first they thought it was because Adrian liked her and maybe because the girl was in an accident but the Caulfields treated her as their own till she was old and sent her school and brought her clothes and everything. Of course they couldn't say a word but they always suspected something was amiss about her especially how she appeared in the scene and Maggie suddenly had a 3 year old baby she had never mentioned before.
The law wasn't as harsh during the years and Tiffany could go with Teddy anywhere she wanted and they could do what ever they wanted without raising and suspicion. Tiffany had dropped her off at the salon and went to pick up their dresses and a few other things they needed for the dinner. When she came back Teddy was done and she had done as Tiffany had suggested. She had straightened her dark curls. She helped Tiffany with the bags as they walked towards the car.
"You look beautiful Teddy I can't wait to see you in your dress." Tiffany exclaimed.
"Thanks Tiff but this dinner is not about me. I can't wait to see you in your dress." Teddy got in the passenger seat and fastened her seat belt and Tiffany drove off.
The farm was buzzing with people. Paul was busy arranging the chairs and the ladies were busy cooking and some setting the tables outside. Tiffany and Teddy got there and went to arrange last minute things in the kitchen before heading upstairs to change. When they were done everything was almost done and guests were arriving. Teddy went to help in the kitchen while Tiffany and Paul welcomed guests.
Tiffany's parents arrived as well as Paul's parents . Paul had hoped Adrian was with them but only Zach came with his grandparents. The dinner was about to begin when Adrian's car pulled into the driveway. Eyes were on him as he stepped out of his car carrying flowers for his mother. He walked towards her and kissed her cheek handing her the flowers and went to take a seat.
Jennifer had seen Adrian in almost two decades she knew he wouldn't recognize her. She spotted him sitting next to Tiff and she knew suddenly it was Adrian. She stood there watching him in secret. Maggie nudged her to move and she went to help serve the food to the guests.
"Who's this beautiful young lady?" Uncle Sam asked as Teddy filled his wine glass. She smiled at him.
"That's Teddy. She's the farms little angel." Paul teased hoping to see if Adrian would react. He lifted his eyes and stared at her. He didn't want to seem weird or perverted but she was a striking beauty. Teddy. There was something familiar about the name. Did he know a Teddy. He sat there thoughtful.
"Adrian you okay?" Tiffany brought him out of his trance. He looked a bit confused.
"Yeah I'm okay Tiff." He got up. "I just need some air."
He got up and went outside. There was something familiar about the name Teddy. Teddy. Teddy. He tried to recall in his mind. He stepped out and went towards the fields. There was a large tractor in the middle of the field. Adrian froze. A tractor. He saw images of a little girl running towards the tractor shouting. Wait there was a little puppy behind the truck. She's trying to save the puppy. The truck reversed and the little ... Adrian tightly closed his eyes. What was this scene he had just seen in his mind? Is it a movie he watched before?
"Adrian what's wrong sweetie? You look like you've seen a ghost?" Tiffany had followed him outside.
"I said I'm fine Tiff. I've just .. I .. this place I haven't.. I needed some air." Adrian couldn't really explain what was happening.
"Ermm. Okay let's head back inside. It's a bit chilly out here." Tiffany suggested. She wanted Adrian to face his past but she didn't want to push him either.
"Yeah you're right. I just have a bad feeling about being here in this farm. Like something..."
They heard voices behind them and it was Paul and his father. Adrian walked towards them. Tiffany stood there watching the three men disappear. She wondered if it was a good idea to bring Adrian back. The accident had a bad impact on him. He was no longer the same cheerful little boy after he witnessed the accident. Tiffany thought if he remembered everything and met Teddy again everything would be fine.
It seemed Adrian was still blocking the whole thing. His grandparents had told them Adrian was still having those nightmares even now as an adult. Tiffany vowed to stop at nothing until her son was the same again. She knew there must be a way to help Adrian. But she wanted to take it slow. She didn't want it to be too much for him. Things might get worse.
