Can she find the strength to change his heart and stay, or will she risk everything to escape a life she didn't choose?

Chapter 1 Beginning of Pains

"What have I done wrong?"

Heavy slaps land on her face, the sound almost reverberating around the room.

"How dare you question my order about who to marry? What say do you have in this family?

Jane's father's eyes were filled with coldness, and his anger was glaring from inside.

This was not the first time she was beaten for asking a mere question.

She had wanted to know why she was being forced to marry when she had no plans to marry such a person.

"Your little sister would be happy if she had this opportunity, but Forster's family specifically requested you instead of Mariam." Dad says this between clenched teeth.

"You should be happy. You're not even qualified to marry into such a family."

"Is that so? I'm not qualified, yet they asked for me? Who are you deceiving? Can't you see that I'm no longer a child?"

It was natural to have them protect Miriam; she was the family princess, while I, on the other hand, am nothing but a second person who is only considered in the absence of the best.

Dad was very furious. "If you don't marry the young master, I will make this house unbearable for you, and you will have no choice but to leave this house in shame."

"What shame is greater than marrying a man in a vegetative stage?"

He raised his hand for the second time, but suddenly the door burst open and my step mother sauntered in.

She stylishly held his hand and scolded him for hitting me

"Dear husband, Are you still using violence? I thought we spoke about this before now."

I felt like vomiting at the display. Her words couldn't sway anyone.

My stepmother was my mom's half sister, who lied against her and had her chased out of the house. Chasing her mom out of the house was not enough; she wanted her out too.

My stepmother approached me and said, "Jane, I know you want the best for this family." I flinch as her hands pat me softly at the back. "The young master is our ticket to permanent freedom from lack, or don't you want us to live a normal life like we did before? I was furious; I was suddenly getting exchanged for their happiness, and their was nothing I could do about it.

"If you both cared about me just one bit, you wouldn't be forcing me to marry a man I do not love because of money."

"You better shut your mouth before I do it for you." I ignored my father and faced my stepmother squarely: "If you're desperate to be affiliated with the Forster's family, you can as well get your precious daughter to marry him."

I would have been extremely happy to marry the young master if he were whole, but he wasn't.

After completing his studies abroad, a careless driver allegedly rammed into him some time ago. The accident is said to have left him in a comatose state since then.

Rumour has it that he doesn't have much time to live.

"I don't want you to continue scouting for work without results like you have been doing since you graduated from college; marrying the young master will leave you wanting for nothing."

I gritted my teeth in anger. I could run away from the house, but my younger brother was still in the hospital, and his bills were unclear.

At the wedding, I could not see my supposed husband.

I had finally agreed to marry him after several threats from my dad and stepmother.

I completed the wedding rites, and with a nervous and uncertain feeling, I signed the marriage certificate. I was finally married to a total stranger, a man who was neither alive nor dead.

The drive to Forster's family house was a weird one.

The mansion is located at the top of one of the most prestigious mountains in Alcony.

Only the social elites could afford to live in such a place.

The car came to a halt, and a servant appeared by the doorway.

"Madam, please follow me." The servant led me upstairs to a room.

The room was dimly lit and bigger than any room I had ever set my eyes on, not like I had seen many in the past.

On the bed in the master bedroom lay my supposed husband,Benjamin Forster.

He had a straight nose, sharp eyebrows, and a stern face. He looked like someone who would be difficult to get along with.

He was no doubt a well-known man; even though he appeared lifeless, his aura was oppressive, and I feared he would be quite dangerous if he wasn't in a coma.

A pang of pity suddenly hit me at the thought that he would be dying soon and wouldn't be able to have a normal life like others.

My hand went for his brows, circled through his cheeks, and nestled on his well-curved lips.

Even in his sleep, he looked so tempting, and I secretly wished he was awake on our wedding night.

Suddenly, I felt him stir, and I quickly drew my hands away.

Chapter 2 The Resurrection

I jump up in shock and cling to a nearby window blind for protection.

I thought they said he's in a coma; why is he suddenly wide awake?

In panic, I observed my supposed husband on the bed; although he was wide awake, he still had the cold expression he had while in a coma.

Just then, someone knocked on the door, and I rushed to open the door, eager to have another person in the room besides my vegetative husband.

"I think the young master is awake; he has opened his eyes."

The young maid gave me a disdainful look before answering me, "You shouldn't be playing around here; this is not some fun park for kids."

"But I wasn't playing around; I just saw him open his eyes before your knock came."

"Take care of the young master and stop being so jumpy."

The maid was about to leave when I suddenly drew her back. "Please, can I get another place to sleep in? I don't think I can sleep in here."

"If you want the young master's family to demand their money back, you can go ahead."

What money is she talking about?

The nanny saw the shock on my face and eyed me sternly. "I guess you're not aware that your family sold you to the young master for a very huge sum."

"Like I said, you are no different from a maid in this house. The only difference is that you're solely here for the young master's needs."

My eyes were suddenly teary. I knew that my parents were capable of a lot of things, but I never dreamed that they could stoop so low to sell me out.

That night, she made up her mind to be happy regardless of everything that was coming. After washing up, she laid beside her unconscious husband, but sleep was not coming.

She has always imagined her wedding night to be a very memorable one, but here she is in bed with a lifeless man who might never see what she looks like till he dies.

She tossed and turned in frustration, wondering why sleep was not coming.

Finally, she drifted into a restless sleep and found herself engulfed in very strange dreams.

When she woke up, her body was sore, and she felt aches all over her body.

She suddenly hears a knock on the door. The woman at the door was older than the one from last night, and she appeared more composed too.

She gave her an impatient glare. "Are you still sleeping by this time?"

"I didn't know I was supposed to wake up earlier," she stuttered.

"Hurry up; the rest of the family are waiting for you downstairs to serve them their breakfast."

On hearing this, she became shocked. The maid of last night had said that she was contracted for the young master's needs alone; why then are they demanding to be served by her?

She quickly wiped her brows and stood up to adjust her nightdress.

Downstairs, her eyes caught the wavering eyes of Benjamin's family members.

They were all seated around the dining table and immediately glanced towards the staircase when they heard her footsteps.

The older maid was kind enough to have brewed the tea. She only needed to serve it to them. She walked carefully towards the table and greeted them politely, careful not to make eye contact with any of them.

They drank their tea in silence and only looked at her when she asked to take her leave.

"You're now part of the family and should be here with us."

I smiled weakly at him. I could tell he was Benjamin's father. He looked exactly like him, but older.

After speaking, he motioned for her to sit in an empty seat directly opposite his own seat.

She smiled weakly and sat down quietly, careful not to offend the others who glared at her like some sort of outcast.

"Jane, I would want you to always be by Benjamin's side. I would appreciate it if you took really good care of him."

She nodded in response. His smile was contagious, and it had the ability to melt the toughest of hearts.

He put down his teacup and said, "I will make sure that nobody treats you unfairly in this family. When Benjamin wakes up, you both should be ready to give me a grandson."

What is he saying? Didn't they say that he only has a few months to live? When will he wake up to have a child with me?

Why does he seem so confident about his recovery?

"Mrs. Joan will explain Benjamin's daily routine to you; make sure to adhere to it."

After breakfast, she was led to the master's bedroom by Mrs. Joan.

"You will have to rest now. I need to tidy up the house, and I will be back to direct you on what to do."

She heaved a sigh of relief as Mrs. Joan closed the door behind her exiting figure.

Suddenly, there was a whimpering sound from the bed, and she turned and saw him lift his hand a little.

As soon as she opened the door, she bumped into the approaching figure of Mrs. Joan.

"Madam, where are you going? You were meant to stay here till I return."

"I think the young master is awake; he moved his hand just now!"

The woman ignored her and went to the bed to examine the person sleeping on the bed.

"Here's the young master's to-do list."

Jane picked up the file and grinned at how much work a man in bed who was unconscious needed.

She had to wash him up and change his clothes early in the morning; every one of the duties was arranged in order of their performance.

"Am I supposed to bathe him by myself?"

"Of course, it's one of your duties as his wife."

She had never seen a naked man's body, and suddenly her cheeks flushed at the thought of seeing Benjamin's.

Although he was sick, Benjamin had a breathtaking figure; she could tell he was handsome when she mistakenly leaned into him the night before.

"He's indeed handsome; it's a pity I would be able to stealthily touch him, but he won't be able to do the same."

Chapter 3 A Shot at Torture

As usual, Benjamin was motionless in the water, and only her stirring caused ripples in it.

Jane wiped his body and smiled at how taut his body felt under her palm.

Suddenly, his hand moved and she eyed him in shock

"If you're going to wake up, why don't you just do so?"

After helping him into the bed with the assistance of the male servants, she laid down beside him, totally worn out from the bath.

"If you're lucky to survive this, you will surely reward me for stressing me so much," she threatened.

Her aches were back, and it bothered her.

She lay down to rest on this particular day after giving her unconscious husband a massage, but a knock on the door abruptly interrupted her.

"Madam, the young master's mother wants to see you."

Jane frowned. Does she have to come now that she's almost exhausted?

It is true that she was eager to meet her mother-in-law, but it was definitely not when she was in dire need of rest.

In the sitting room downstairs, her mother-in-law scanned her as she walked in, as if measuring her worth.

Their eyes met, and she looked away immediately.

The beautiful, middle-aged woman in front of her exhumed an equal aura with a river goddess.

She was tall and slender, and she had a charming presence too. She suddenly understands why Benjamin is very good-looking; his parents could turn heads even at their age.

"Are you Jane? I hope you know why you're here.

Unsure of how to answer the question without offending the woman, she faked a smile and nodded in affirmation.

Her eyes were filled with disdain, and even her classic makeup couldn't cover it.

"Hope you know that your family sold you to us? If at any point you get tired of the marriage, we are bound to do with you as we please."

The words pierced her heart, but she stood and maintained her composure. She was not ready to give her the satisfaction she was craving.

"My son is unwell; that doesn't mean he is dead. If I dare hear any rumour about your misbehaviour with other men, I will make sure you get punished severely."

"And why will you do that? I am still here, you know," her husband's voice rang out, and the duo turned to meet his glare.

"Did you suddenly return from your trip to scare our daughter-in-law away with harsh words?"

The wife quickly gave Jane a cold glance and went ahead to explain herself.

"Of course not, dear husband. I am only teaching her how to be a proper wife to our son."

"It didn't seem like it when I walked in on you talking to her in a scary manner."

manner.

"She's right, sir. She was instructing me on how to take care of my husband."

Mrs. Leornard took a hasty glance at him before letting the two of them alone.

She probably didn't expect that her husband would take a liking to the poor girl they married for their son.

Mr. Leornard scoffed, "Don't mind her and her strictness. I can see that you're well trained, and I know our son is in good hands.

"Thank you, sir. I want to head back to my room now."

As she arrived at the door of her room, she saw that it was slightly open, and someone seemed to be talking in a low tone inside.

"Brother, I have always admired you, but right now, you're as good as dead. I don't even know why they married a wife for you. What need does a dead man have for a wife?"

Jane clenched her fists.

"I would watch you breathe your last breath while I take over everything that belongs to you, including your new bride."

Jane pushed open the door and saw the stranger choking Benjamin

"What are you trying to do?" she shouted, pushing him roughly.

The stranger immediately let go of Benjamin's neck and adjusted his ruffled clothes.

"Who are you, and how did you get into this room?"

The stranger ignored her questions and glared at her in anger.

Suddenly, his cold expression turned into a fake smile.

"So, you're Benjamin's new bride? Anyways, I'm Kennedy, his younger brother."

"How come I have never heard about you since I got into this place?"

"Well, you're right. I hardly come home. I only came around to greet our new bride. And I must say that dad made the perfect choice for Ben. You're really as pretty as he described."

She had heard what he was saying outside; she would have believed his sweet words, but she knew better.

"Thanks for your sweet words. Please don't enter this room without permission next time," she said.

Ken smiled and approached her. "I am sure nobody has complimented your beauty since you arrived.

As he spoke, he reached out to tease her, but she recoiled and pushed his hands off.

"What are you doing?

He pulled his hands back and smiled gleefully at her momentary confusion.

"I know how lonely you would be with my brother lying helplessly here. Why don't you come to me tonight for some fun?"

"You're definitely mad to think I would want to have anything to do with you."

Ken's smile immediately disappeared, and he grabbed her arm roughly, crushing her soft frame on his hard chest.

"I've always wanted everything that belongs to Benjamin, and that also includes his women."

"Let me go now." Jane squirmed in his grasp.

The two of them struggled, and out of desperation, she kicked him on the crotch.

This enraged Ken, who grabbed her and pushed her hard until she fell into the empty space on the bed. Her head hit Ben's head painfully.
