Chapter 1 Her Birthday

As if her tiny girl knew she was coming, Scarlett pushed the door of the room next to hers.

She was grinning at Scarlett as she entered, up in her cot, saying, "Momma." She extended her small arms toward her.

Every time her tiny Munchkin called her that, Scarlett's heart jumped with delight. 'Momma' was the first word she said when she first began talking a few weeks ago; the other words were ones she had learned from everyone. Scarlett was initially taken aback, then her heart exploded with joy; she was a proud mother.

She grabbed her up as she walked over to her crib.

With a smile, Scarlett wished her a happy birthday, Ivy. "You turn one today."

Ivy laughed as if she had heard Scarlett's words. She was the ideal child, and her little Ivy was the best baby she could have asked for. Ivy was smarter than other babies her age and the most gorgeous baby ever.

Scarlett questioned how her birth parents could have abandoned her in such a way. She couldn't handle it. However, that is all in the past now. Ivy was now hers, and she loved her more and more every day. She would never stop loving her because she was so incredibly adorable and lovable, and most importantly, she was everything Scarlett could ever want. Scarlett had always desired a dimple on her left cheek, but she had never been fortunate enough to have one.

She was determined to make today's birthday as memorable as possible for Ivy. She was impatient.

________

About waiting, Maxwell pondered why Daniel Smith was taking so long.

He was running late because Bea's lawyer had requested to see him that day. He had questioned why Daniel wanted to meet him today of all days since his assistant, Claire, had given him his schedule for the day. When he became a widower a month ago, he was supposed to call, but he didn't.

Why now?

He pondered.

"Sir, Mr. Smith has arrived." The voice of his assistant boomed across the intercom.

"Let him in Claire." He stated,

After a minute, his office door opened, and Claire entered, Daniel trailing after. The majority of Bea's family's legal matters were handled by Daniel, a young and accomplished attorney. Daniel walked over to his desk and Maxwell got up.

"Sorry, I'm late." Daniel started "My last client got me tied up."

Maxwell extended his hand and firmly shook Daniel's.

"Please have a seat." Maxwell pointed to a chair in front of his desk. "Would you like my assistant to get you something to drink?" After Daniel was settled, he took a seat himself.

"No, I'm fine. Thank you. He stated, "Maxwell nodded to Claire, who was standing close to the door, and she understood. " She gave them solitude by leaving the office.

"Thank you for taking the time to see me." He said, "I know you might be wondering why I asked to see you."

"That I am," said Maxwell.

Daniel said, "Well, it is very important," which was clear.

"Why today?" He inquired.

Daniel said, "That is what you're about to find out," and he took out a brown envelope from his briefcase.

He adjusted his glasses and glanced at Maxwell.

"I was expressly instructed by your late wife, Mrs. Beatrice Edward, to present this to you on this day. I didn't intend to give you a day sooner or later, she said. Maxwell's brows wrinkled as he said, "I wonder why." He scrutinized the envelope in Daniel's fingers as he extended his hand to take it. He felt the weight of whatever was inside his chest, even though he thought it weighed almost nothing.

"You don't happen to know why?" Maxwell asked "Not a clue. My job is to deliver and not find out."

Maxwell gave a nod.

"I'll take my leave then," Daniel stated as he stood up and grabbed his briefcase.

Maxwell shook his hand and stood up too.

"Thank you, Daniel." "Just doing my job, Mr. Edward," he said. Then he departed.

After Daniel left his office, his eyes switched from the closed door to the envelope on his desk. After staring at the envelope for a time, he sat down and beeped Claire to let her know he didn't want to be bothered for a bit.

At last, he grabbed the envelope and ripped it open.

His curiosity would be satiated by whatever was within, but he was anxious about what he may discover. She could drop a bomb and then smile as if nothing had occurred since she knew Bea as well as he did.

A piece of neatly folded paper dropped onto his desk as he emptied the envelope. Not much more. On his desk, the white paper was on the verge of exploding. He picked it up and cautiously unfolded the paper.

It was either now or never.

He pondered.

When he saw Bea's writing on the paper, he moaned and tightened his chest as he carefully read what she had written.

Greetings, Maxwell

I'm no longer with you if you're reading this letter. I cared for you even though our marriage was devoid of love. I assume you are aware of that.

Yes, you showed it in a very peculiar way. Maxwell pondered.

I sincerely apologize for what you are going to learn. However, know that it is the truth, and I withheld it from you out of self-interest and a lack of courage when I realized I wouldn't survive.

I discovered I was pregnant a month before my departure. I chose to go because I had no idea how to inform you or how you would respond.

This realization caused Maxwell's eyes to expand, and he kept reading to see what in the world this woman was thinking.

Just saying, "Maxwell, we're having a baby," would have sufficed.

Maxwell pondered.

I wasn't prepared to have a child, and I wasn't sure if you were either.

The letter stated. He didn't, but is there ever a child's appropriate moment? He pondered. ...or if you were prepared for one, he would have agreed to it and they would have worked it out together. So, like I always do, I lied and fled. I carried the child and went into hiding because I couldn't force myself to get rid of it. I didn't want the media in particular to find out.

I was informed that I had finally given birth to a girl. I had instructed the nurses to take her away right away, so I was unable to see her. To be honest, I have no idea what happened to me following that. After I lost my postpartum weight, I intended to get back to you, but I went completely crazy. According to my therapist, I use drugs and alcohol because I feel guilty about leaving my child behind. Perhaps she was correct. Before you found me, the drugs and alcohol helped me forget about it and became a source of comfort.

Since then, I've guarded this sinister secret, knowing that one day I'd have to tell you. I also recognize now that I was a coward for not telling you as soon as you found me, now that I know I wouldn't make it.

Maxwell started crying and his vision went fuzzy.

I didn't want to spend my final days with you hating me, so I chose to send you a letter rather than telling you.

Maxwell is our child, and she's somewhere out there. Since it's her birthday today, I instructed Daniel to deliver this letter to you.

I sincerely hope you will pardon me for not telling you sooner; I wish I had. Together, we could have been with her. I apologize. I sincerely apologize. Maxwell, I hope you'll forgive me. Please, Bea.

Maxwell looked down at the letter in disbelief, and a tear fell on the white paper. No! "Shock" would be an understatement. He had been expecting this bomb, and it simply exploded in his mind.

What on earth could she have done to him, their child, or to them? The intractable questions started.

Could she? He didn't ask any specific person.

Bea wasn't there for him to scold her for doing anything sensible, so he wasn't sure what to do. He wanted to punch a punching bag because he was so angry with her. That's precisely what he did.

After telling Claire to postpone all of his plans for the day, he departed. After arriving home, he went to his room, undressed to his briefs, and put on a pair of black joggers. He then proceeded to his gym downstairs and punched the living daylights out of the punching bag while allowing his thoughts to run wild.

He was powerless to alter the past. The action was taken. He had no choice but to use every means necessary to find his daughter.

Thirty minutes later, he picked up his phone and called Tom, who picked up on the third ring.

He said to him, "Tom, I need you to find someone for me."

"Who?" Tom inquired.

Maxwell rubbed a towel down his neck and let out a deep sigh.

"I don't know." He said, aware of how foolish he sounded at the time.

On the other end of the telephone, Tom said nothing.

"Any detail about this person?" He inquired.

"I'm the only family she has." As though that would aid Tom in locating her, Maxwell remarked.

"All right. How much do you know about this woman or girl? His question was desperate.

"Today's her birthday...and she's my daughter."

Quietness

"Oh."

"Oh" was correct.

Chapter 2 It would be that simple

With Ivy in her arms, Scarlett ascended in the elevator. The only thing that made her dislike her job was having to drop Ivy off at the daycare located on the second floor of the company's building. Although she knew it wouldn't happen, she wished Ivy would be with her constantly.

She exited the elevator as it slammed open and entered the daycare's foyer.

"Hey, you." From behind the desk, Sofi spotted Scarlett coming toward her and smiled.

"Hi. "Where is Andy?" While searching for her other best friend, Scarlett questioned Sofi.

"Inside, with the other children. How she never becomes weary of their cries is beyond me. In response, she stood up and walked around the desk in Scarlett's direction. "Hey, cutie." Looking down at Ivy in Scarlett's arms, she grinned.

The expression on Ivy's face made Scarlett smile. It was the same one that she experienced when she saw Sofi and Andy. She was looking at Sofi with a grim look, blinking regularly like one of those episodes of Tom and Jerry when they go blink blink blink.

As Sofi reached for Ivy and repositioned her in her arms, her face took on a lovely expression. In a matter of seconds, Ivy's expression altered as Sofi started talking to her in baby language, which was nothing but total nonsense. However, who was Ivy to interrupt the conversation if it made her smile?

After leaving Ivy and Sofi, Scarlett went inside the daycare to find Andy.

Since Scarlett joined Freddie and Co. five years ago, Scarlett, Miranda, and Sofia have been buddies. They clicked right away and have remained friends ever since. Just like she was aware of Sofia's family and Miranda's marital troubles, they were also aware of the adoption and everything else. She was completely thankful to them for rekindling her desire to adopt and for promising to support her if she ever needed it. Both of them served as Ivy's godmothers, and Scarlett was still unsure about whether it was the best or worst choice she had ever made. As evidenced by the several birthday presents they purchased for Ivy last week, they lavished her with attention at every opportunity. They managed the daycare, which was fortunate. Knowing that Andy and Sofi would be there with her Munchkin made it easier for Scarlett to leave Ivy there.

At least according to her parents, Sofia was a rebel in her family. They wanted her to work in the family's fashion business, but she decided to follow her path and ended up caring for children at Freddie and Co., where she fell in love. Her parents had cut her off, so she had initially applied for the job to have a source of income while she looked for another one. However, she was now just like Miranda, who loved children more than she liked people her age. Like her, Miranda came from a modest middle-class household. She lost faith in humanity because she trusted people so readily. She focused on what she did best, which was caring for children. Since they all became friends, she had been in a single relationship, which Scarlett and Sofi knew was poisonous. After she allowed someone inside, Miranda simply struggled to let go. Her boyfriend, Derek, was a jerk. They all knew it, but Miranda didn't want to let go of him because she secretly hoped he would return to the person she had met, something Sofi and Scarlett believed would never happen.

When Scarlett saw Andy with the other children, she was beaming. Miranda, who goes by Andy, loves kids, but she freaked out when she and Sofi mentioned having some of her own.

Andy called "Scarlett" as soon as she saw her. "Where's the little princess?"

Before Scarlett could say another word, Andy left the children with the other staff members and went out into the lobby, where Sofi and Ivy were, after she stated, "With Sofi." Shaking her head, Scarlett followed.

"Hi, princess." Andy addressed Ivy in a cartoon-like manner. "It's me, Andy."

Ivy mumbled something like "candy" while grinning.

Miranda screamed out loud.

"Close, but you can do better." "To Ivy," she said.

Andy was told by Sofi, "She's one Andy, leave her alone,"

"You're just jealous she got to say my name first," Andy said.

"I'm pretty sure she said Candy." Andy and Sofi continued to argue.

Both of them had been attempting to get Ivy to utter their names ever since she began speaking.

"All right. I'll see you all at lunch, and I'm going to depart now." They were kissing Ivy on the temple when Scarlett broke the silence. "Goodbye, lovely. I'll see you later, Mommy."

"Momma." Ivy drooled.

Ivy looked back and forth between her pals as Scarlett left her, still arguing.

Ready to get to work, she entered the elevator and pushed the number to her floor.

Maxwell was starting to lose patience. Since the day he learned he had a daughter, he had been unable to concentrate.

What if she was in pain somewhere?

Since then, he hadn't heard from Tom, and he couldn't help but wonder whether he had learned anything new about his daughter. Maxwell let out a deep sigh.

"Mister? Mr. Lobos has come to visit with you. Maxwell's office was filled with Claire's voice.

He said to her, "Let him in."

She replied, "Yes sir."

After a few seconds, Tom entered his office.

"Tom." When he said, "Tell me you have something," Maxwell stood up. I had been waiting for a week because of you."

He sat down and said, "Actually, I have everything." "Well, all that there is anyway."

Maxwell let out a sigh of comfort.

"Great."

"All right. I learned that on the day your late wife gave birth in April, she placed her up for adoption. Two months later, Scarlett Bennett expressed interest in your daughter, and nine months later, the adoption was completed."

Maxwell performed the arithmetic and remarked, "So, my daughter was adopted by this Scarlett Bennett this year,"

Tom gave a nod.

He said, "What do you have on her?"

"She works at Freddie and Co. Single, is 27 years old, and had a summa cum laude degree from UCLA. Parents, you live alone."

"Tom, I only need to know that. Have you got her address? Before Tom could give him all the details about her, Maxwell said.

"Of course," he replied, scrawling it on a sheet of paper Maxwell had given him. "What exactly do you plan on doing sir?"

"I'll demand my child from her when I visit her home. I'll give her the money she requires to cover all of her previous work. "Frank," Maxwell said.

"That's not a smart concept, in my opinion. That's not the type of woman Ms. Bennett is. She already maintains a trust fund for your daughter, and based on my research, she leads a comfortable life. She also has custody and all rights to the child. Because this adoption was closed, it would not matter in court even if you were the child's biological father. I do know that the only reason you weren't contacted throughout the adoption was because your late wife had left your name off of your child's birth certificate."

Maxwell gave it some thinking.

"So, you're saying I should do nothing."

Tom let out a sigh.

"When you take this to court, I'm suggesting you should find a right angle that would matter. You may be granted visiting privileges if you just enter the room, present them with a DNA sample, and provide them with a note from your wife's therapist stating that she was not competent to sign the birth certificate without your name.

Maxwell gave Tom a sharp look.

"I don't want visiting rights!" "Oh," he said.

"Exactly." Tom replied, "So, think this through and find a logical way that would make the court think hard about the closed adoption."

Maxwell took a swallow. Tom's explanation of the court concept did not sit well with him at all.

"How long would that take?"

"Months." Tom retorted, "Since we have nothing to start with, we would have to search for proof, which would take three to four months. Then bringing legal action and..."

"I can't wait that long."

He let out a sigh as he searched his mind for what to do next.

He was unable to think of one that would be quicker. Even worse was the judicial issue. He wanted to hold his daughter as quickly as possible. Without going to court or hiring attorneys, he would simply need to figure out how to get his daughter what he wants. Maxwell didn't want the media to learn of this, in addition to the fact that he didn't want to wait so long to hold his daughter. He didn't like that he would become the focus of the media if this went to court. To him, the notion that all press is good press was nonsense. The story would be twisted in so many different ways that the following generation would still be attempting to determine which version was correct. He didn't want to expose his daughter to that kind of life at such a young age, and he couldn't take that chance. He needed to accomplish this without being noticed. He had to do something that would not attract the notice of the press.

"How old did you say this woman was again?"

"27," Tom answered.

"And single." A Cheshire smile appeared on his lips and widened as he spoke, mirroring the scheme that suddenly materialized in his mind.

He intended to grow close to her, earn her trust, have his child, and then break up with her.

It would be that simple.

Maxwell grinned as he pondered.

It was going to be enjoyable.

Chapter 3 He had a joke in mind

By the end of the day, Maxwell had a complete plan and was prepared to carry it out. Before heading for the elevator, he instructed Claire to cancel all of his meetings.

The elevator squealed open into the foyer a minute later. Maxwell left the house and went outside. As he passed, everyone's heads turned. For Maxwell, it had always been that way. The women couldn't take their eyes off of him since he was the picture of perfection. A man who has appeared on the cover of All Business Central, the leading business magazine, for three years in a row. Among other things, he has been called a hot bachelor and sexy. Since the magazine's most recent issue, he had already become accustomed to the attention.

Doorman Clarence greeted him with "Have a nice day sir" as he opened the door.

When Maxwell saw Patrick and the car waiting for him in front of the building, he gave him a brief nod as he left. Claire didn't need to be reminded to contact Patrick to prepare the automobile each time he left the office. After entering, Patrick held the door open and shut it.

"Where to sir?" After getting inside the car and starting it, Patrick inquired.

"Freddie and Co," Maxwell answered.

A few minutes later, Maxwell reached Freddie and Co. He exited the vehicle and walked into the building, heading for the elevator. The receptionist stared at him as he walked in, unable to speak.

He pressed the elevator button and bided his time.

He detested waiting so much.

The elevator arrived quickly, and Maxwell moved aside as passengers got out. The final woman, like the other women, stepped out of the elevator and stared at him before passing by. Ignoring her, Maxwell walked inside the elevator while glancing down at his phone. As he did so, someone else got out, bumping shoulders and dropping a bag. Because of the wait and the fact that this person was unable to keep an eye on their whereabouts, Maxwell was already on the verge of losing it. He was going to yell at her when he noticed the woman bending to retrieve her handbag and then the infant dozing in her arms. Her hair was the same shade of brown as the woman who was carrying her. She was quite cute. Even though he wasn't a kid at heart, there was something about this child that made him smile.

The woman looked at him, and he paused as he leaned to assist her in gathering her belongings.

When they grabbed her belongings, Scarlett grinned at him.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome." As they both got up from the ground, he remarked.

Coffee-brown eyes. A simple bun for hair. Work attire that was both professional and sexy.

Something about her piqued Maxwell's curiosity, even though he never imagined he would ever be drawn to a simple lady.

She offered him one more smile and turned to leave just as he was ready to introduce himself. As she left the company building, he stood there and watched her. He thought about pursuing her, but he needed to get in quickly because the elevator was closing. Before the elevator closed, he entered.

He reached the top floor, still thinking about the woman he had bumped into, and entered the lobby, where he saw the assistant to Freddie Danforth. She was attractive, but so were a lot of others.

Her eyes widened as she hurried to her feet upon seeing him coming.

She stammered, "Mr... Mr. Edward."

He never needed to get in touch with Freddie and Co. because the Edwards had never done business with them. Now, however, he wanted to suggest that Danfort had to agree to.

"Mr. Danfort here?" Maxwell questioned her.

"Yes sir." Regaining her composure, she responded. "I'll inform him of your presence."

Maxwell waited once again.

"Sir, Mr. Edward is here to see you." The assistant spoke into her desk's intercom.

"Mr. Edward?" Danforth sounded taken aback.

Why wouldn't he? Maxwell couldn't hold him responsible.

"Hmm, let him in." "He said,"

"Yes sir." She gave Maxwell a sensual smile. "He'll see you now."

Maxwell marched straight into Freddie Danfort's office, closing the door behind him, ignoring her, and mentally noting that he would get rid of her when he had the company.

"Mr. Edward." Danforth got up. "What a surprise!"

Maxwell approached his desk.

"Is."

When he said, "Please, have a seat,"

Maxwell took a seat.

"To what do I owe this pleasure?" Danforth inquired.

"I'm here for business." He replied.

Danforth appeared perplexed. "Mr. Edward, I don't see how we can assist you with that. We work in different fields."

"I understand. However, I do have a suggestion for you. Maxwell informed him.

His jaw tightened.

"Let's hear it," he continued. "I am aware that Freddie and Co. have filed for bankruptcy, and you need investors to support you." Though I would like it if you were seeking a buyer, I would still like to invest. Maxwell hesitated. "So, name your price."

"I'm lost." Danforth put his elbow on the table and leaned forward. "You're saying you want to buy my company."

"That's right." Maxwell leaned forward, too.

"What would make you desire to switch to my field of work so quickly? You want to purchase my publishing business, and you possess building enterprises all across the world. May I inquire why?

"Personal reasons," replied Maxwell. "So, numbers?"

Danforth let out a sigh.

"I don't think I'm ready to sell Mr. Edward."

"You need investors to keep your business afloat." Everyone in the business community, including Mr. Danfort, is aware that your company has filed for bankruptcy. I'm fairly certain you don't want to sell because I didn't see anyone waiting in line outside your office."

"It's not my call..."

It is, of course. Your board members would undoubtedly support the plan, and you will be required to reimburse your prior investment." Maxwell hesitated. "Mr. Danfort, I'm willing to buy this company and pay your investors back and any other person you owe, just name your price."

Danforth seems both astonished and delighted. He grinned.

"We have a deal, Mr. Edward." He got to his feet and held out his hand.

Maxwell stood up and reached for Danfort's hand after buttoning his suit jacket. He nodded and grinned at him.

"I'll have a contract prepared by my attorney and sent to you. I want this to be over as soon as possible.

He let out a sigh. "Your reason must be very important."

Maxwell responded, "It is," and turned to leave.

Maxwell instructed his lawyer to draft the contract and deliver it to Mr. Danfort today over the phone as he was leaving. By tomorrow, he hoped to put an end to everything.

Scarlett had found the week to be a haze. Lunchtime made it enjoyable, but other than that, nothing changed. Despite not being told, everyone at the organization was aware that they had a new CEO. However, the information spread like wildfire and wasn't verified until Freddie Danfort's assistant, Violetta, was let go and he stopped showing up for work.

Ivy was in Scarlett's arms as she entered the business building. She went to the elevator and noticed it was closed.

"Hold it please." When it opened, she shouted, hoped whoever was within would comply, and quietly thanked them above. "Thank you." As she entered, she grinned.

Finding the appropriate way to approach the woman who had his daughter had been Maxwell's obsession, and it hadn't been simple after passing Freddie and company. Additionally, he had been thinking about the woman he had initially seen at the workplace. He was taken aback when she entered the elevator because he had been thinking about her.

"No dropping bags?" He was compelled to inquire, "Excuse me?" Scarlett gave him a look.

"Last time we met, you dropped your bag." "He said,"

Scarlett grinned after remembering for a few seconds.

"It was you."

Maxwell had not smiled in a long time, so he was surprised when he couldn't help but smile. He was unable to recall the last time he had been compelled to grin.

"Your daughter is beautiful." Sincerely, he said.

"Thank you." Why Scarlett felt uncomfortable speaking to this stranger in an elevator was a mystery to her. She did recall thinking he was attractive when she saw him a few days prior. However, it had been a long time since she had spoken to a man, much less one who appeared to have just stepped out of a magazine. Santos didn't count because he was in charge of her department.

Scarlett didn't make the sexual remark that Maxwell anticipated her to make when he complimented her, as all other ladies did.

Was she unaware of his identity?

The elevator to the childcare on the second floor opened just as he was ready to introduce himself. He had made the effort to learn about the contents of every floor of the business.

As Scarlett stepped out of the elevator, he simply stared at her, wondering what it was about her that affected him. "Have a good day," she said.

After dropping Ivy off, Scarlett headed to her workplace. Her thoughts kept returning to him. He was someone she had never seen before.

Was he brand-new?

"Morning Alice." On her approach to her office, Scarlett greeted her helper.

"Morning Scarlett." Alice returned the greeting.

"How many?" Scarlett asked as she paused at Alice's door.

"Four."

Scarlett let out a sigh.

Santos wanted to fire her.

The day didn't finish as soon as Scarlett had anticipated. She believed it would be simple to study the four files Santos sent during business hours. However, she was mistaken; the files were larger than anticipated, and on days like this, she felt even more thankful for Andy and Sofi. They both understood her work philosophy and were thrilled to be on Ivy's duty once she told them about her workload.

Late that night, Scarlett arrived on the bottom floor and was told by Jerry that her automobile would not start. She proceeded to the garage to try to start the damned vehicle, but as Jerry had previously stated, it would not start. She tried a couple more times before giving up and pulling out her phone to call for an Uber, but none were available at the time.

Oh no!

She considered who to call, but she was aware that if they could find a taxi at this moment, they would need to come fetch her. Furthermore, it would be absurd for one of them to come and pick her up in a taxi only to go back because she was going to their place. At last, she gave up, grabbed her luggage, and got out of the car. Maxwell was leaving for the day at the same moment she was leaving the parking lot.

Maxwell was exhausted from managing both his present and former businesses all day. He noticed that she was leaving the parking lot before him as he was leaving it. She jumped as he honked as he drove up next to her, and her heart rate increased.

Scarlett froze when she saw Maxwell driving the incredibly costly car after he rolled down the windshield. Despite her lack of automotive knowledge, she could tell this car was extremely costly. Inaudibly swallowing when he appeared again. He was so...

"Need a ride?" Her thoughts were interrupted by Maxwell, and she felt his words in the pit of her stomach.

How could someone be that attractive?

A double-take went through her heart.

Scarlett gave him a serious look at that moment. She hadn't even considered taking the time to look at him when they had met by mistake the first two times, so her unexpected response to him now caught her off guard.

"Hmm..."

Who the hell is hesitant to accompany him in a car?

Maxwell scowled.

What was the matter with her?

"Thank you, but no. I'm going to wait for a taxi.

"I doubt you'll get one at this time."

He was pushing her, but why?

He pondered.

He might simply drive away without turning around. He was going to get into trouble since he was begging for it.

Scarlett knew who he was, sort of, but she was never one to hop in someone else's automobile.

"I don't want to trouble you."

"You're not." Says Maxwell: "I'm offering."

Scarlett grinned.

Wasn't he?

"You don't even know where I'm headed."

After grinning, Maxwell pushed open the passenger door and said, "Then get in and let me know."

Scarlett glanced at the open automobile door.

"I promise to be a gentleman." Scarlett couldn't help but smile back at him as she climbed into his vehicle.

Here she is.

Maxwell looked at Scarlett as he drove with her beside him.

"Aren't you forgetting something?"

"What?" Scarlett asked, glancing at him. "Your daughter."

Scarlett laughed.

"Are you implying that I'm a careless mum?"

"No. No, I wasn't.

Oh no! He had a joke in mind.

"How long have you worked for Freddie Danforth?"

"Five years." "I'm guessing you just joined the company," Scarlett replied.

Maxwell gave a nod.

"Something like that."

"How do you like it?" She enquired

"Ask me that after my first month." Scarlett grinned at the implication.

"What makes you think we'll be seeing more of each other?"

"The business is little. I can find you with ease." As she spoke, Maxwell continued to look at her. "Now I know where your daughter got her beauty from."

Scarlett gave him a questioning glance.

"You."

Scarlett chuckled.

"I highly doubt that."

"Why's that?" Scarlett only grinned and turned away when he asked.

"But you are beautiful." "You must have men lining up," he continued.

Scarlett let out a silent sigh.

If that were the case, she wouldn't pursue anyone.
